Get the young creatives involved with the festival in a new way with community partners, who will be on site doing take-away projects with young visitors! Youth can start their appreciation for the arts at a young age by visiting Young Collectors on Saturday and Sunday. For just $5 children can begin their art collecting journey. YOUNG ARTIST EXHIBITION Each festival we receive hundreds of pieces of artwork created by talented Valley youth who are interested in having their works exhibited for a chance to win a cash prize, and for the opportunity to sell their works (please refer to each nameplate to identify which pieces are for sale). You can visit the exhibition near Kids Block, Friday-Sunday at the festival. YOUNG COLLECTORS GALLERY Each year, our artists have the option to donate a piece to the gallery, offering children the chance to purchase and bring home their very own piece. We encourage young collectors to shop on their own, learning freedom in what they like. Volunteers will be in place to assist children. Visitors may donate their works. C. Volunteers will be badly needed. D. Young artists can gain more profit. B Last year, my husband and I decided to make our 12-storey building more of a community. We live in a small rented apartment in Park Merced, a large housing development. I would call us lower-middle-class. A lot of nurses, bus drivers, and tradesmen live here, many of them 1st or 2nd generation immigrants (移民). We’re all renters. Renters come and go and tend not to see the buildings they live in as their home. But it can be done. We started with a monthly two-hour social in the building lobby (前厅) on the second Fridays of each month. Some people came, between 15-30 each time. The events lasted two hours, but there wasn’t much to do besides talking, eating snacks and drinking juice. The socials were nice, but most residents gave them a miss. Then one day I was on the nearby campus of San Francisco State University. A young man from a social club for students had a big sign about “Building Community”. I asked him, “How do you do that?” He said they tried to get people to share something about themselves with at least one other person. That made a lot of sense to me. I bought a large world map. At the social, I taped it on the lobby walls with signs that said “Where We’re From. Put a green sticker where you were born and yellow stickers where your grandparents were born.” People put up their stickers and looked where other people came from. We left the map up overnight, and the next day, Saturday, more people played. I planned to leave the map and stickers up for a month or more. They certainly made the lobby more interesting than the housing project look it usually has. I see that there will be challenges, but I also know that a strong community will help us live good lives. I have the time and energy to do this work. 4. What trouble did the author have building a community? A. The community was poor. B. She lacked enough money. C Renters had no sense of belonging. D. Her neighbors were all immigrants. 5. How did the author find her earlier events? A. Fruitful. B. Ordinary. C. Inspiring. D. Messy. 6. What did the author do in order to change the socials? A. Adopt a sharing game. B. Add foods and drinks. C. Admit experienced locals. D. Ask some students for support. 7. Which of the following best describes the author? A. Responsible and strict. B. Demanding and ambitious. C. Knowledgeable and modest. D. Insightful and determined. C There’s so much carbon dioxide (CO2) in the air that just planting trees and protecting forests won’t solve the problem. When plants and trees die, the carbon they’ve stored gets released again. Moreover, the CO2 in the atmosphere is much more dilute than in, for example, waste gas from a power station or a steel plant. Capturing CO2 from the air is the most expensive application of carbon capture. Direct Air Capture (DAC) is one type of technological carbon removal, which obtains CO2 directly from the atmosphere at any location, unlike carbon capture which is generally carried out at the point of emissions. The CO2 can be permanently stored in deep geological formations or used for a variety of applications. Graphyte is a US company working on DAC. The company claims its carbon capture method is cheap, mainly because it lets plants do the work. The company collects unwanted wood products from farmers and furniture companies. It dries this “biomass” completely so that it can’t break down. Graphyte then smashes (打碎) the dried plants into small bricks which it seals in a special wrapper and buries deep underground. Graphyte says its process doesn’t use much energy and can work anywhere. The plant and tree material the process uses would release carbon if it wasn’t treated. And the cost is less than$ 100 to capture a ton of CO2. The company is building a factory, but it’s not running yet. Not everyone is excited about this carbon removal. Some people worry that it will take too long for DAC technology to become powerful enough to make a difference. Others worry that focusing on removing carbon could take attention away from more important climate actions, like switching from fossil fuels to renewable energy. But experts say the decision isn’t to do one or the other. The world needs to end fossil fuel use and pull carbon out of the air. 8. What does the author intend to tell us in the first paragraph? A. Trees can purify the air in the sky. B. Plants release more carbon dioxide. C. Removing carbon from air is challenging. D. CO2 emission reduction is urgently needed. 9. What does the underlined word “dilute” in Paragraph 1 mean? A. Beneficial. B. Thin. C. Harmful. D. Concentrated. 10. What can we know about Graphyte’s DAC project? A. Its cost is relatively low. B. It is in good operation now. C. Its working condition is demanding. D. It turns carbon into building materials. 11. What is the experts’ opinion about DAC technology? A. It will make a difference soon. B. It can replace renewable energy in time. C. It will result in more environmental concerns. D. It can work together with other climate measures. D Each of us individually is the accumulated (积累) product of thousands of generations that have come before us in an unbroken line. Our culture and technology today are also the result of thousands of years of accumulated and remixed cultural knowledge. Cumulative culture allowed humans to adapt to a diversity of environments and challenges. But, it is unclear when cumulative culture first developed during ancient human evolution. “Our earliest ancestors have been successful at adapting to ecological conditions that require different kinds of problems to be solved,” said Perreault, an associate professor with the School of Human Evolution and Social Change. “Cumulative culture is key because it allows human populations to build on and recombine the solutions of prior generations and to develop new complex solutions to problems very quickly.” As a baseline for the complexity of stone tool technologies achievable without cumulative culture, Perreault analyzed technologies used by chimpanzees (黑猩猩). He then analyzed changes in the complexity of stone tool-making techniques across the past 3.3 million years of the archaeological record to explore the origin of cumulative culture. He broke down the complexity of the stone tool technologies by the number of steps that each tool-making sequence (序列) involved. The results suggested that from around 3.3 to 1.8 million years ago, stone tool-making sequences remained within the range of the baselines. From around 1.8 million to 600,000 years ago, making sequences began to slightly top the complexity baseline. But, after around 600,000 years ago, the complexity of making sequences rapidly increased. “By 600,000 years ago or so, ancient human populations started relying on unusually complex technologies, and we only see rapid increases in complexity after that time as well,” said Perreault. Tool-assisted food-hunting may have been the motive for the earliest beginning of the evolution of cumulative culture. Early ancient humans, 3.4 to 2 million years ago, likely relied on strategies that require tools - like accessing meat and organs - leading to changes in brain size, lifetime and biology that set the stage for cumulative culture. 12. What does cumulative culture refer to according to the text? A. Emphasizing individual development. B. Paying attention to reforming social structure. C. Adapting to a changing living condition step by step. D. Building up technological improvements over generations. 13. What’s Paragraph 3 mainly about? A. How Perreault conducted the research. B. How important stone tool technologies were. C. What the baseline of cumulative culture was. D. Why Perreault chose chimpanzees for the study. 14. What happened by 600,000 years ago? A. Tool-making sequences remained unchanged. B. The population of the earth increased sharply. C The ancestors began to make stone tools. D. The technology reached a turning point. 15. Why are strategies that require tools mentioned in the last paragraph? A. To show the result of human brains’ changes. B. To illustrate the motive of cumulative culture. C. To indicate the significance of common culture. D. To stress the eating habits of human ancestors. For college applicants, the essay is the place to showcase their writing skills and let their unique voice shine through. In fact, it’s challenging to think of putting your whole life in one essay. Students should narrow their focus and write about a specific experience or hobby that reveals something personal, like how they think, what they value or what their strengths are. ____18____ There are certain types of essays that typically stand out to admissions officers. What’s most important is that a college essay is thoughtful. ____19____ Think of the college essay as a meaningful glimpse of who you are beyond your other application materials. But you should avoid hyperbole (夸张), which can lose the readers’ trust. ____20____ If students are having trouble brainstorming potential topics, they can ask friends or family members for help. It meant moving away from my friends and going to a completely different middle school than the one I thought I’d be going to. In August, my parents and I got to take a tour of the school. That was when we learned that there weren’t any buses that passed our new neighbourhood. It was actually close to the school, so that meant I would be walking to and from school every day. At the time, both of my parents worked five days a week, so they found a babysitter to be there when my two-year-old brother and I got home and watch us until my parents returned home. The school year started, and in early September, we got a massive heatwave. The middle school was an old building and most of it was not air-conditioned. At the end of those days, I was tired and not in any mood to walk an additional twenty minutes in the heat, so I used snack money to call the babysitter. The babysitter, thinking he should not let me suffer in the heat, came to pick me up. I did try to call home two more times over the next two weeks. The second time, I got the sitter again. The third time, Dad answered. He was not happy with me. “It’s not that hot! You shouldn’t call the sitter away from the house. You have to start growing up. Walk home, and we will talk more when you get here.” “Okay,” I told demanding Dad. “I wouldn’t call the sitter or you again to be picked up.” Last Friday, a storm was getting close when school was out. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ “How did you get home?” Mom asked, shocked. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ★启用前注意保密 广东省2025届普通高中毕业班第二次调研考试 英语 本试卷共10页,考试用时120分钟,满分120分。 1. Due to the bad weather, our usual outdoor PE activities were transformed into a lively indoor sports session. We started with a game of “Simon Says”, which requires attention and quick reaction. We really enjoyed it. Then came a dance workout, where we learned a few simple dance moves to upbeat music. Throughout the class, I couldn’t help but appreciate the ingenuity of our teacher in turning a potentially dull indoor session into something enjoyable and memorable. I hope you’re also having fun and staying active in your daily routine. Last Friday, a storm was getting close when school was out. Of course I was scared, yet I had this strong sense of “I have to walk home”. So I made a dash for my house. However, fate seemed determined to test my resolve. The rain was absolutely pouring down. What should have been a twelve-minute walk took about thirty, each minute marked by the rhythmic drumming of raindrops against my body with the occasional rumble of thunder in the distance. Finally, I burst through the front door with pride. I called out breathlessly, “Hi, Mom! Hi, Dad! I’m home!” “How did you get home?” Mom asked, shocked. “I walked,” I replied proudly. “Why not call home for emergencies?” Her voice was filled with worry. She was drying me off when Dad approached. “Well done, that’s my boy!” he patted me kindly, adding “Storms make trees take deeper roots.” I gave a nod and said, “I see.” On Saturday he took me out, treating me to a special day. We watched two movies together. That noon, he also surprised me with a large pepperoni pizza, my favourite. It was the most delicious food that I had ever had.
