D. Create artworks. B I try to be a good father. Cook my kids good dishes, and take them to photo shoots. But compared with Dick Hoyt, I suck. Eighty-five times he’s pushed his disabled son, Rick, in marathons. This love story began in Winchester, Mass., 43 years ago, when Rick was strangled (缠住)by the umbilical cord(脐带)during birth, leaving him brain-damaged and unable to control his limbs (四肢). “He’ll be a vegetable(植物人)the rest of his life,” doctors told Dick and his wife, Judy, when Rick was nine months old. “Put him in an institution.” But the Hoyts weren’t buying it. They noticed the way Rick’s eyes followed them around the room. When Rick was 11, they took him to the engineering department at Tufts University. Equipped with a computer, Rick was finally able to communicate. After a high school classmate was paralyzed(使瘫痪)in an accident, and the school organized a charity run for him, Rick said, “Dad, I want to do that.” How was Dick, a man who never ran more than a mile at a time, going to push his son five miles? Still, he tried. That day changed Rick’s life. “Dad,” he typed, “when we were running, it felt like I wasn’t disabled anymore!” That sentence changed Dick’s life. He became obsessed with giving Rick that feeling as often as he could. They even decided to try marathons. “No way,” Dick was told by a race official. They weren’t quite a single runner, and they weren’t quite a wheelchair competitor. For a few years, Dick and Rick joined the massive field and ran anyway. In 1983, they ran another marathon so fast that they made the qualifying time for the Boston Marathon the following year. Now they’ve done 212 triathlons and 85 marathons. “ My dad is the Father of the Century” Rick typed. 4. What does the underlined sentence in paragraph 2 mean? A. The Hoyts didn’t believe it was true. B. The Hoyts couldn’t afford any institution. C. The Hoyts couldn’t deal with the situation. D. The Hoyts had no money for their son’s treatment. 5. What’s discussed in the third paragraph? A. Why Rick became paralyzed. B. How Rick started running. C. Why running changed Rick’s life D. How Rick communicated with others. 6. They got the chance to join the 1984 Boston Marathon because __________. A. they ran a marathon very fast B. they got support from a charity C. they met a sympathetic race official D. they had become very famous in the process 7. Which can be a suitable title for the text? A. A boy with a rare disease B. The greatest dad in the world C. A tough road to world champion D. Parents' influence on children's future C The debate over which is the true ocean top predator (捕食者) has finally been put to bed, after scientists released the first-ever video study of killer whales hunting and killing great white sharks off the coast of South Africa. This week scientists from Rhodes and Stellenbosch universities in South Africa released extended drone (无人机) and helicopter videos shot during the summer that provides unanswerable proof that killer whales use their famous pack hunting skills to catch and feed on the largest shark species. The videos shows three killer whales encircling and eventually killing a great white shark. Study authors say at least three sharks were killed by the small group during an hour-long hunt. Killer whales have been recorded catching and feeding on other shark species and in 2019 videos appeared of a group killing a healthy adult blue whale estimated to measure between 18 and 22 meters in length. “Their group hunting methods make them unbelievably effective predators,” said marine mammal specialist Simon Elwen, who co-authored the study.Weighing up to 9 tons and armed with large conical (圆锥形的) teeth, the killer whales’ impressive organ structure aids in battles against dangerous and oversized enemies. But it is intelligence and cooperative behavior that gives the species its real edge over the competitionThe so-called karate chop (空手道) is a favored technique in shark hunting,by which the whale will give powerful tail strikes to the head of the fish.Killer whales then turn over the shark onto its back, making the prey (猎物) inactive and defenseless. Killer whales in different regions show preference for different prey animals, suggesting that some hunting techniques are learned behaviors passed down through the generations. Some communities prefer feeding on schools of salmon and herring while others might mainly target seals. 8. Which of the following was previously thought to be the real ocean top predators? A. The seal. B The blue shark. C. The killer whale. D. The white shark. 9. Why does the author mention the videos in 2019? A. To make comparisons. B. To provide further proof. C. To introduce the topic. D. To explain the argument. 10. What does paragraph 4 mainly tell us? A. The wisdom of killer whales. B. The advantages killer whales have. C. The body structure of killer whales. D. The hunting techniques killer whales have. 11. What can we learn about killer whales from the last paragraph? A. They live in groups. B. They have the same taste. C. They pass on habitats to their young. D. They are born with great hunting skills. D Many people have attended lots of virtual meetings these years. Some research shows this adjustment might not impact workplace productivity to any great degree. A new study, though, suggests otherwise. In the study, 602 participants were randomly paired and asked to come up with creative uses for a product. They were also randomly selected to work together either in person or virtually. The pairs were then ranked by assessing their total number of ideas, as well as those concepts’ degree of novelty, and asked to submit their best idea. Among the groups, virtual pairs came up with significantly fewer ideas, suggesting that something about face-to-face interaction generates more creative ideas. The findings could stiffen employers’ determination to require their employees to come back to the office. “We ran this experiment based on feedback from companies that it was harder to innovate with remote workers,” said lead researcher Melanie Brucks. “Unlike other forms of virtual communication, like phone calls or e-mail, videoconferencing copies the in-person experience quite well, so I was surprised when we found meaningful differences between in-person and video interaction for idea generation.” When random objects were placed in both the virtual and physical rooms, the virtual pairs of participants spent more time looking directly at each other rather than letting their look wander about the room and taking in the entire scene. Eyeing one’s whole environment and noticing the random objects were associated with increased idea generation. On platforms, the screen occupies our interactions. Our look wavers less. “Looking away might come across as rude,” said Brucks, “so we have to look at the screen because that is the defined context of the interaction, the same way we wouldn’t walk to another room while talking to someone in person.” Like most educators, Brucks has primarily taught virtually in the past three years, and she did notice some benefits of the approach as well. Her students were more likely to take turns speaking and her shyer students spoke up more often, rid of the anxiety that comes from addressing a large classroom. Brucks found that one solution to improving virtual idea generation might be to simply turn off the camera, for her students felt “freer” and more creative when asked to do so. And this may be sound advice for the workplace. Virtual teamwork can’t replace face-to-face teamwork. Idea selection proficiency (能力) is only valuable if you have strong options to select from, and face-to-face teams are the best means to generate winning options. Perhaps the workplace will find a compromise — a sweet spot in the middle that balances working from both home and office. 12. What does the underlined word “stiffen” in Paragraph 2 most probably mean? A. Shake. B. Revise. C. Challenge. D. Strengthen. 13. Which of the following statements would Melanie Brucks agree with at first? A. Videoconferencing can’t compare with in-person communication. B. Participants should make eye contact in an online meeting. C. The feedback from companies seems questionable. D Creative ideas may emerge from casual thoughts. 14. What can we learn about Brucks’ class? A. Her students relieved anxiety by speaking up. B. Her students progressed in focusing attention. C. Her students took advantage of virtual learning. D. Her students displayed talent for public speaking. 15. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage? A. Interacting Virtually Impacts Working Participation B. Maintaining Teamwork Improves Idea Generation C. Grouping Randomly Increases Productivity D. Brainstorming Online Limits Creativity 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 For years, research has linked skipping breakfast with increased BMI (body mass index), but few studies have been carried out into the effect of the other meals of the day. However, a study conducted at Osaka University concluded that not eating dinner is a significant predictor of weight gain and obesity. ____16____ As part of their annual check-ups, the students were asked how often they ate breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Researchers also took into consideration the time of eating, whether participants’ meal habits changed over the course of the study, and lifestyle factors. ____17____ But the researchers found that those who did so all the time were more likely to be older, more overweight, a smoker or drinker, to sleep for a shorter period of time, and skip other meals more frequently. These results suggest that skipping dinner, which was much less popular than skipping breakfast, could result in weight gain and a higher likelihood of being overweight than skipping breakfast. It was significantly associated with weight gain of 10% or more, and having a BMI over 25, which is classed as overweight or obese. ____18____ The researchers suggested that the reason why skipping dinner could lead to weight gain is that it makes people hungrier so they end up eating more over the course of the day. ____19____ That’s because dinner is typically a meal that lends itself to nutritious foods like lean (少脂的) proteins and vegetables. The researchers note that their study had drawbacks: ____20____ Additionally, they didn’t take into account factors like exercise or depression. A BMI has its limitations after all. B. Besides, skipping dinner may mean a lower quality diet. C. It should be repeated to assess a wider group of people. D. Skipping lunch was more likely to bring about the same outcomes. E. It followed 20,000 subjects overall above 18 over an average of three years. F. The number of students who said they sometimes skipped dinner was small. G. Students skipping dinner has a stronger association with weight gain and obesity. Derby is a cute little disabled dog. The people there relied on corn farming for their livelihood. However, the harsh natural conditions often resulted in poor harvests. Droughts were the biggest challenge, while sudden downpours during the rainy season would flood the fields. Despite these difficulties, there was a young boy in the village named Steven who had a deep love for science. He dreamed of using knowledge to change the fate of his community. From a young age, the boy was fascinated by the wonders of science. He spent his days exploring the world around him, eager to know its mysteries. While other children played in the fields, he could be found conducting “experiments” and thinking about his future under the shade of a tree. He wanted to develop a dam to store rainwater and then pump (用泵抽运) the water from the dam to water the corn when there would be a drought. But to build the dam was a big problem. His passion tor learning was undeniable, but his father, a traditionalist who valued hard work above all else, did not understand or support his son’s ambition at first. To him, the only real way to help the family was through manual labor on the farm. Despite his father’s disapproval, Steven remained determined in his pursuit of knowledge. Steven believed that education held the key to a better future, not just for himself but for the entire village. Seeing his son’s firm determination, the father changed his mind. The father realized that perhaps there was more to life than working in the fields. With a heavy heart, he emptied his savings to send Steven to school, hoping that one day his son would make his own dream come true. Years passed, and Steven tirelessly worked on his studies. His efforts paid off when he graduated with top honors from university. Armed with a wealth of knowledge and a burning desire to make a difference, he returned to his village with a mission. 注意: 1.续写词数应为150个左右; 2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 Upon returning to the village, Steven immediately started to solve the problem. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ After knowing the project, all the villagers joined in the construction of the dam. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 潍坊四中24-25-1学期过程检测 高二英语 2024.10 (时间:120分钟 满分:150分) 第一部分 听力(共两节,满分30分) 第一节(共5小题;每小题1.5分,满分7.5分) 听下面5段对话。每段对话后有一个小题,从题中所给的A、B、C三个选项中选出最佳选项,并标在试卷的相应位置。听完每段对话后,你都有10秒钟的时间来回答有关小题和阅读下一小题。每段对话仅读一遍。 1. There are a few techniques you can use to make your handwriting more smooth and graceful. To begin with, you can have models to imitate which are not only written beautifully but correctly and neatly. While imitating, pay attention to things like order, length and direction, and you will grasp the core ideas. If you are unable to do it on your own, I advise you to join the calligraphy club in our school, which is intended for foreign calligraphy lovers. If you take painstaking efforts and patience, I believe you’ll make great progress sooner or later. Yours, Li Hua 第二节(满分25分) 【51题答案】 【答案】 Upon returning to the village, Steven immediately started to solve the problem. He gathered the villagers and presented his innovative plan to construct a multifunctional dam, which could conserve rainwater as well as provide a reliable water source during periods of drought. Although some villagers were initially skeptical, Steven’s enthusiasm and determination convinced them of the project’s importance. Meanwhile, he organized a team to create a detailed proposal and budget for the dam construction, which they planned to submit to the local government for funding and support. After knowing the project, all the villagers joined in the construction of the dam. Everyone generously contributed their time, labor, and resources to ensure the success of the dam project. The villagers worked tirelessly, devoting themselves to the construction of the dam. Within just a few months, their efforts bore fruit and the dam was completed. The dam not only successfully saved the rain water but also could pump water to irrigate the field during the dry season.
