Jeff and Linda Lohr were living in Schwenksville, Pennsylvania, in 2007, when a young Ghanaian carpenter named Abu emailed to ask if he could join Jeff’s woodworking school.
Abu wanted to start a woodworking program to help children learn how to make a living. After much back and forth, the Lohrs raised money for travel costs and obtained a visa for Abu. He arrived in April 2008 on a three-month scholarship to train with Jeff and live in their farm home.
The Lohrs planned to train Abu on Western woodworking machinery and then ship whatever machinery they could afford to Ghana. However, as they learned more about rural Ghana, they soon realized this wouldn’t work. The machine tools were expensive in America and many of them wouldn’t be bought in Ghana. So they took Abu to a local building materials market and asked him to point out materials and tools he could access in Ghana, and that led to the creation of what Abu called “Mr. Jeffry’s Third World Machine Shop”. Abu took the parts of the first one back to Ghana to use as a model for building others. Under Abu’s guidance, two teams of carpenters would build two machines each month.
In 2008, Abu was offered nine acres of land and granted permission to build the first training center. Because transporting everything by hand over a small stream was time-consuming, the Ghanaians engineered and built a bridge, entirely by hand. The blocks to build the training center were handcrafted. However, they completed it within several months.
Now the training center teaches woodworking fabric arts, and food preservation to rural Ghanaians. So far, it has trained thousands of Ghanaians. “We have built bridges, fixed roads, and repaired buildings all with volunteer local labor. The concept here is not charity,” Jeff said. “It’s just helping them help themselves. Education is really the tool for getting peace in the world in my mind.”
24. Why did Abu want to join Jeff’s woodworking school?
A. To collect money for travel. B. To learn modern technology.
C. To promote Ghanaian woodworking. D. To train Ghanaian kids to earn a living.
25. What trouble did the Lohrs meet when helping Abu?
A. They couldn’t offer him some expensive machines.
B. Abu couldn’t buy many parts and tools in Ghana.
C. Abu couldn’t recognize all the materials and tools.
D. The task of creating a machine shop is challenging.
26. What does the underlined word “granted” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Asked. B. Sought. C. Awarded. D. Given.
27. What is implied in Jeff’s words in the last paragraph?
A. Helping Abu has produced various benefits.
B. Education leads to modern development of Ghana.
C. Helping others is a way to getting peace in the world.
D. People should make a great contribution to getting peace.
C
The artificial turf (草皮) industry has had a great deal of success convincing millions of people that its short-lived, non-recyclable product is somehow good for the environment. Were there a greenwashing hall of fame, this would be in it. In fact, it’s clear that artificial turf is bad for our ecosystems as well as our health.
Artificial turf worsens the effects of climate change. On a 90-degree Los Angeles day, the temperature of artificial turf can be hot enough to burn skin. And artificial turf is laid improperly and disproportionately (不成比例地) to replace private and public turf in many economically disadvantaged communities that already face the greatest effects of the urban heat-island effect, in which hard surfaces raise local temperatures.
Besides, because artificial turf is a complex product made of multiple types of plastic, it will never be recycled. After its relatively short lifespan of about 8 to 15 years, artificial turf ends up in landfills, creating a whole host of additional pollution problems.
Studies show the maintenance costs of artificial turf are often more than those of natural grass. When the field is a plastic carpet, those systems can’t work, necessitating regular cleaning with a substantial amount of water.
Remarkably, artificial turf doesn’t even save water compared with grass. Industry marketing materials claim that an artificial field can save millions of gallons of water a year and that homeowners who use the product to replace a conventional lawn can reduce their water use by more than half. But artificial turf must be regularly cleaned with water, and in warm climates, artificial fields get so hot that schools must water them down before children play on them.
Industry water reduction promises generally compare artificial turf with the thirstiest grasses. But far more drought-tolerant varieties of natural turf grass are available. Residential lawns are indeed a tremendously wasteful use of water, but native plants are a far better solution than artificial turf — and you get butterflies as a bonus.
28. How does the author sound in paragraph 1?
A. Embarrassed. B. Critical. C. Regretful. D. Disappointed.
29. Which is a fact of the artificial turf?
A. It is used by many poor communities. B. It can only be recycled within 15 years.
C. It is a main reason for hard ground surface. D. It greatly worsens the global climate change.
30. What is mainly talked about in paragraph 5?
A. The amount of water wasted by artificial turf.
B. The misleading information about the artificial turf.
C. The temperature of the artificial turf in hot weather.
D. The measures to deal with the artificial turf in schools.
31. What is the main purpose of the passage?
A. To illustrate the need for better turf.
B. To call for the improvement of plastic turf.
C. To analyse the disadvantages of artificial turf.
D. To compare the natural turf with the artificial turf.

According to new research, babies are not only capable of creative thinking well before starting to speak, but this sort of thinking may be important for language learning.
In the study, the researchers set out to explore the origins of human creativity and productive thinking to try to find out how people arrive at completely new thoughts and ideas. They found that babies were able to very quickly learn new words that describe small quantities and combine these with familiar words to fully understand a phrase.
Lead researcher, Dr. Barbara Pomiechowska, said: “Human creativity is limitless: it has taken us to the moon and allowed us to cure deadly diseases — but despite its importance, we don’t yet know when and how this impressive ability to combine ideas and invent new things appears. This research shows that we must go right back to the beginning of language learning to solve this puzzle. ”
In the study, the researchers worked with 60 babies, all around the age of 12 months. They started by teaching the babies two novel words describing quantity: “mize”, to mean “one”, and “padu”, to mean “two”.
Then the babies were asked to combine these new number words with different object names, for example to identify “padu ducks” from some pictures. By teaching novel words to represent quantities, the researchers were able to test the babies’ ability to combine concepts in real time, rather than simply recall combinations of words that they already knew from previous experience.
By using eye-tracking technology to monitor where the babies look, the researchers were able to show that the babies could successfully combine the two concepts to understand what they were being asked about.
According to Dr. Barbara, this ability to combine different concepts is likely to help babies not only to understand the language input, but also to learn about different aspects of the physical and social world.
32. What puzzle did the researchers want to solve?
A. The origin of creative thinking. B. The ways to cure deadly diseases.
C. The limitations of creative thinking. D. The importance of language acquisition.
33. What were the babies asked to do in the study?
A. Create novel words. B. Count numbers in order.
C. Point out the number they knew. D. Match objects with what they heard.
34. What did the researchers use in the study?
A. Previous data. B. Advanced technology.
C. Professional concepts. D. Regular examinations.
35. What is this passage mainly about?
A. Human creativity is limitless. B. Children’s learning ability varies.
C. Children are good at creating words. D. Human creative thinking starts very early.

Jason had always been passionate about running. From the moment he could remember, the thrill of the wind against his face and the rhythm of his feet hitting the ground filled him with a sense of purpose and joy. Ever since he was a child, he dreamt of participating in the city marathon and winning it.
In high school, he enthusiastically joined the track team. He was full of hope and determination, but his first race was a disaster. He tripped over his own feet and fell near the finish line, the sound of laughter ringing in his ears. The shame was intense, but rather than let it break him, it fueled his determination to prove himself.
He trained hard every day, waking up before dawn to run several miles. The early morning air was cold and biting, but he pushed through. However, during a crucial practice session, he pulled a muscle and had to take a break for weeks. He was frustrated as he watched his teammates progress. His confidence took a huge hit, and doubt began to boost.
When he recovered and went back to training, he found it difficult to regain his previous form. Each run felt like a struggle, and he constantly questioned if he had lost his edge. Just as he was starting to make progress and regain his speed, a new setback appeared. He got sick with a severe flu that kept him on the bed for a month. The loss of fitness and strength was disheartening, and the fear of having to start all over again appeared. When he finally returned to training, he found that he had lost much of his endurance and had to work twice as hard to catch up.
However, Jason refused to give in. He trained even harder, pushing his limits every day. Long runs under the sun, tiring speed workouts, and intense strength training became his routine. The pain and exhaustion were constant companions, but he never let them stop him. He believed that all his struggles and perseverance would finally pay off.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题纸的相应位置作答。
Finally, the day of marathon arrived, the starting gun fired, and the race began.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
From that day on, Jason continued to pursue his passion for running.

Dear Johnson,
Knowing that you’ve been in a bad mood due to the failure in a game last week, I am writing to you to share my opinions.
As we all know, you are very excellent at chess. The failure last week really doesn’t matter, for it is normal to occasionally fail in the competition. Therefore, instead of feeling frustrated and losing heart, you’re supposed to summarize the reasons for the failure and continue to train hard, and then you’re bound to defeat your future opponents. You should trust yourself, because failure is the mother of success.
I sincerely hope that you can keep a good mood.
Yours,
Li Hua

His legs burned, and his lungs gasped for air. In the final stretch, Jason used a final burst of energy. The crowd’s cheers grew louder as he crossed the finish line first. Tears of joy and relief streamed down his face. His story spread throughout the school and the community and he received countless messages of support and admiration.
From that day on, Jason continued to pursue his passion for running. He faced new challenges and competitions with a calm and confident attitude. Each race was a testament to his growth and the lessons he had learned along the way. The road to success might have been full of twists and turns, but it made his achievements all the more sweet. And as he looked towards the future, he knew that no matter what lay ahead, he had the strength and spirit to overcome it.
