(一)
(23-24高二上·广东深圳·期末)When people ask about my experience of learning Cantonese, I recount a journey driven by unending curiosity and a strong desire to connect with a dynamic culture.
Growing up in a Russian family, my fascination with languages grew thanks to my father, a language expert. It’s during a cultural appreciation class in junior high that I was first introduced to the world of Hong Kong films, famous for their characteristic action-packed dramas and storytelling styles. However, what really amazed me was the uniqueness of the language, Cantonese, which sparked a urgent need within me to explore it and the rich culture behind. This marked the beginning of a thrilling linguistic journey.
Learning Cantonese posed challenges, such as unfamiliar characters, complex tones, and different grammar structures, yet I persevered. Immersed in textbooks and available online courses, I practiced the tones everyday until my pronunciation flowed naturally. Cantonese dramas and music also played a role in familiarizing me with its rhythm.
To truly grasp the essence of Cantonese, I knew that studying alone wasn’t enough — I needed firsthand experience. So, I took a gap year to pack my bags for Hong Kong, a city featuring the lively heartbeat of Cantonese culture. Buried in its busy streets and daily conversations, from casual chats to food ordering, I found myself enveloped in a linguistic wonderland. Within a few months, my Cantonese proficiency flourished, fueling a surge of confidence.
My explorations extended beyond the streets. I enrolled in formal language classes that offered professional guidance. Through hard work, I successfully completed all the courses in Cantonese Linguistics. From then on, I’ve been passionately committed to spreading the Cantonese culture, ensuring its richness reaches a wider audience.
Today, I continue my Cantonese voyage with unflagging enthusiasm. It has transformed into more than just a linguistic pursuit; it grants me a passport to sincere connections, profound insights, and heartfelt admiration for its one-of-a-kind culture.

(23-24高二上·广东广州·期末)Growing up on a farm in Virginia during racial segregation (种族隔离) , West knew education would be her means of escape. But she didn’t know her quiet work would change lives around the world.
Gladys West knew from a young age that she didn’t want to be a farmer. But the mathematician, born in 1930 in a county, still had to help harvest crops on her family’s small farm. The hard work started before daybreak and lasted well into the blistering heat of the afternoon. She hated the dirt but, while she worked, she kept her mind on the building behind the trees at the end of the farm. It was her school, and even then she knew it would be her ticket to freedom. “I was gonna get an education and I was going to get out of there. I wasn’t going to be stuck there all my life,” West, 89, says firmly.
Gladys West began her career as a mathematician in 1956 in a lab where there were only three other black employees when she joined. She was widely admired for her ability to solve complex mathematical problems by hand. She eventually went on to program computers to solve the equations (等式) for her. Her first major project was to determine the movements of Neptune and Pluto in relation to each other. In 1978, Gladys became the Project Manager of SeaSat, an surveillance (监控) satellite designed to provide data on oceanographic features and conditions. The project was among the first to show that satellites can be used to observe oceanographic data. By programming a computer to account for tides, gravity, and other factors, Gladys and her team created a program to precisely calculate the orbit of satellites. Her work on this project made it possible to develop a geoid, which is a model of the shape of the Earth. The model and its later updates led to her developing the GPS system, which can make accurate calculations in any location on Earth.
Finally in 2018, through her tireless efforts, Gladys West received formal recognition for her work on the GPS. Her name also got featured on the BBC’s 100 Women of 2018, which honored inspiring women from around the globe.

(23-24高二上·广东茂名·期末)Jamie Whitmore, 43, isn’t used to slowing down. The professional athlete who became a gold medalist in the Olympics for the disabled has never met a challenge she couldn’t overcome, whether it was a mountain bike race or cancer.
One morning in 2007, Whitmore found her le g muscles were tight when going for a jog. Thinking she’d pushed herself too hard in the last race, she ignored the pain. Later at a sports camp in Arizona, she realized something was wrong. “Once I got on my bike I was so painful that it was hard to lift my legs. I flew back home to go to hospital.” What doctors found shocked them all: Whitmore had a soft tissue tumour (肿瘤) that started in the bone, and the tumour wrapped around her nerves of waist, touching several vital organs.
After the surgery, Whitmore had to learn to walk again with the help of a physical doctor. She also started radiation treatment, but four months later, doc-tors had worse news: A scan showed the cancer was back. “This time it was more aggressive. Doctors took the rest of my nerves in the waist, and removed some tumours from my tail bone.” Whitmore developed sepsis (败血症) from the surgery and endured a two-month recovery. “My scans were coming back, showing I was clear of cancer, but now I had all of these other complications (并发症).”
Today, Whitmore is a mother and cancer-free. She has won a gold medal in the Paralympics, and has set two world records. Whitmore has some advice for others with limitations: “Never let anyone tell you what you can and cannot do. You have to find out yourself. (23-24高二上·广东潮州·期末)Pearl S. Buck was born in Virginia, the United States in 1892 and her parents were missionaries. When Buck was four months old, her parents took her with them to China.
From childhood, Buck spoke both Chinese and English. She grew up playing with Chinese children. She never developed a feeling of superiority toward the Chinese. Rather, Buck was better equipped to recognize some of the absurdities (荒唐的行为) her parents’ profession.
Buck returned to the United States to attend Randolph-Macon Women’s College. However, the country of her birth was largely unfamiliar to her, so she felt like a foreigner. After graduation, she returned to China to take care of her sick mother. Her first and only biological child, Carol, was born a few years after she got married. Due to a tumor, Buck had to have an operation. Soon afterwards her daughter was severely ill. Almost at the same time, her mother died after her long illness. Despite these misfortunes placed on her life, she refused to be defeated.
The Good Earth, her best-known book, was published in 1931. The novel quickly gained an international reputation. It was cited in the decision to award her the Noble Prize for Literature, “for her rich and truly great descriptions of peasant life in China and for her biographical masterpieces” a year later. Pearl Buck’s works after 1938 are too many to mention. Her novels continued to deal with the confrontation (对抗) of East and West, her interest spreading to such countries as India and Korea.
Buck also devoted herself to humanitarian causes. With her husband, she founded an adoption agency for mixed-race Asian and American children. These children were often outcasts in Asian countries because of their mixed blood and because they were often the illegitimate (私生的) children of American servicemen.
Buck spent all her life trying to help people in the USA understand Chinese culture. She wanted to prove to her readers that the universality of mankind can exist if they accept it.
16.What can we know about Buck?
A.She couldn’t speak English when she was young.
B.She couldn’t get on with her parents.
C.She was proud of her parents’ profession.
D.She grew up in China.
17.What is The Good Earth mainly about?
A.Conflicts in India and Korea. B.What Buck saw in China.
C.Children’s life in an adoption agency. D.Why Buck chose to live in China.
18.What does the underlined word “outcasts” in Paragraph 5 refer to?
A.Children whose parents were Asians. B.Children whose parents were busy.
C.Children who were disabled. D.Children who were abandoned.
19.Which of the following can best describe Buck?

(23-24高二上·广东佛山·期末)When Laura Smith was 14 years old, she volunteered at a nonprofit food community organization. As she was filling bags with donated (捐赠) food, she noticed something that didn’t seem right: Canned and packaged goods were plentiful, but she saw nothing fresh or green to give to families in need. She thought it would be great to change that. She wanted to start a garden on part of her parents’ farmland to provide families with home-grown produce.
While being proud of her, Laura’s father expressed worry about the workload involved. Laura had raised rabbits and lambs before, but she had never tried growing vegetables on such an extensive level. However, he soon realized that his daughter was ready. Laura did a lot of research online to find out what worked and what didn’t, which plants needed shade, which needed more water, and when was the best time to harvest each crop.
In spring 2021 Laura planted 15 types of vegetables on a land of 5,000 square meters. When the first green shoots appeared, it was an exciting feeling. Yet, that’s where the real work began. “Our summers are very hot and dry, so I had to water every day,” said Laura. Throughout the summer, she checked her plants daily for weeds and watered them by hand, using two water tanks attached to a farm vehicle to continually refill her watering can.
Laura was soon ready to harvest and weigh her first crops-the first batch weighed 40 pounds. She then packaged them and donated the products to eight local groups. “It felt really good to know that anyone who wanted fresh vegetables could get them,” Laura said.
Over the past two years, Laura has donated more than 8,000 pounds of fruits and vegetables. “Laura’s confidence and generous hand in helping those in need have made a greater impact than she could have imagined,” said Remi Freeman, an official from one of the charity groups. “It helps our mission to end hunger, and also demonstrates the selflessness and kindness that is so wonderful to see in younger people.”
20.What inspired Laura to start a garden?
A.Her interest in gardening.
B.Her parents’ expectations.
C.Lack of fresh produce in the donated food.
D.Poor quality of canned and packaged food.
21.What concerned Laura’s father about her plan at first?
A.The money needed. B.The amount of work.
C.Her farming knowledge. D.Her working experience.
22.What does Paragraph 3 mainly talk about?
A.Laura’s hard work. B.Laura’s ambitious plan.
C.The poor weather condition. D.The skills needed for farming.
23.What is the best title for the passage?
A.A Great Gardening Dream
B.A Journey to Green Living
C.A Close Study on Organic Food
D.A Harvest of Growing Kindness
【答案】20.C 21.B 22.A 23.D

(23-24高二上·广东湛江·期末)Alonzo Carter, also known as Zo, is currently a football coach for the San Jose State Spartans in California. He’s trained countless student athletes, which often means his previous job in the hip-hop industry goes unnoticed. But not always!
Back in 1989, he and a few of his college friends auditioned (试演) for a music video. The song? MC Hammer’s still-unknown classic, Let’s Get It Started. They were hired on the spot and soon went on tours with him! As the summer came to an end, Zo assumed he’d return to college to finish his degree and reclaim his spot on the football team, but MC Hammer gained great popularity and started taking over the airwaves. Zo had a huge decision to make and ultimately joined MC Hammer as a permanent (长期的) backup dancer! But Zo couldn’t shake his passion for football. He eventually left the group to return to his high school in Oakland, California, where he began coaching track and football.
Decades later, Zo is one of the most well-known and respected college football coaches and doesn’t call much attention to his hip-hop beginnings. But at a training practice in 2017, a familiar song started playing over the PA system (广播系统). It happened that the head coach Brent Brennan had caught wind of Zo’s past and wanted him to show off his moves.
Without missing a beat, Zo dived in and started doing the Hammer Dance he had helped create all those years before. The moves came to him as easily as they had done back in the day, and his players obviously couldn’t get enough of his impressive talent.
Zo is a good reminder of how surprising career paths can be. Just think what would have happened if he hadn’t gone to that audition! The Hammer Dance wouldn’t exist as we know it, which would be a real tragedy (悲剧).

A.He coaches a college football team. B.He serves as head of backup dancer.
C.He competes in track and field events. D.He teaches high school students hip-hop.
25.What can be inferred from paragraph 2?
A.MC Hammer didn’t become famous until 1989.
B.Zo and his friends didn’t perform well in the audition.
C.Zo and his friends didn’t know much about Let’s Get It Started.
D.MC Hammer wasn’t in favor of Zo’s decision to finish his degree.
26.What does the underlined part “had caught wind of” in paragraph 3 mean?
A.Had looked into. B.Had reflected on. C.Had talked about. D.Had heard of.
27.What is the author’s attitude towards Zo’s career as a dancer?
A.He thinks little of it. B.He is doubtful about it.

【答案】24.A 25.A 26.D 27.C
【导语】这是一篇记叙文。文章主要介绍Zo不仅是足球队的教练也是Hammer Dance的创造者。
24.细节理解题。根据文章第一段中“Alonzo Carter, also known as Zo, is currently a football coach for the San Jose State Spartans in California. (几十年后,Zo成为了最知名、最受尊敬的大学足球教练之一,他对自己的嘻哈起步并不太关注。)”可知,Zo现在正在执教一支大学足球球队。故选A项。
25.推理判断题。根据文章第二段中“Back in 1989, he and a few of his college friends auditioned(试演) for a music video. (早在1989年,他和他的几个大学朋友参加了一个音乐视频的试镜。这首歌?MC Hammer仍然不为人知的经典之作《让我们开始吧》。他们当场被雇佣,很快就和他一起去旅行了!随着夏天的结束,Zo以为他会回到大学完成学位,重新获得足球队的位置,但MC Hammer获得了巨大的人气,并开始接管广播。)”可以推断出,MCHammer是在1989年才名气大涨的。故选A项。
26.词句猜测题。由文章第三段“It happened that the head coach Brent Brennan had caught wind of Zo’s past and wanted him to show off his moves. (碰巧主教练布伦特·布伦南(Brent Brennan) Zo的过去,想让他炫耀一下自己的动作。)”可知,这里应指Brent Brennan“听说过”Zo的过去,所以想看他表演。故猜测had caught wind of 表“听说过”。故选D项。
27.推理判断题。由文章最后一段“Zo is a good reminder of how surprising career paths can be. Just think what would have happened if he hadn’t gone to that audition! The Hammer Dance wouldn’t exist as we know it, which would be a real tragedy (悲剧). (Zo很好地提醒我们,职业道路是多么令人惊讶。想想如果他没有去试镜会发生什么吧!Hammer Dance不会像我们所知道的那样存在,这将是一场真正的悲剧。)”如果当初Zo没有参加试演,就没有我们今天熟悉的Hammer Dance,由此可见,作者为Zo跳舞这段职业经历感到骄傲。故选C项

(23-24高二上·广东深圳·期末)I love to eat, but feeding others is my love language. Serving delicious, home-cooked meals was my best attempt at making new friends. I don’t want to brag (吹嘘), but my food is pretty good. Everyone was asking me for the recipes, which is how Bun Bo Bae, my Vietnamese cooking blog, came to be.
Looking back, I’ve probably been meant to start a food blog. I spent most of my childhood in the kitchen with my mom. As a child, I’d watch her cook. My duties started with just passing her the ingredients. Soon, I was measuring, steaming and stir-frying my way toward kitchen mastery. I left for college before I could learn my mom’s best dishes.
In 2015 I was living alone while studying abroad in France. I was desperately homesick. So, I called my mom and asked for the recipes for my favorite dishes. She couldn’t give me a single measurement for any dish — that wasn’t the way she learned how to cook. My grandma passed on her knowledge orally. Now it was my turn. My mom taught me how to “measure with my heart.” Instead of following strict measurements, I learned to cook by tasting and feeling my food.
Bun Bo Bae originally served as a space for me to put down what I learned. I didn’t want the secret knowledge behind my family’s dishes to disappear one day if the oral tradition ended. As my followers grew, so did my confidence in the kitchen. It also grew my confidence at work. I taught myself social media and web building, and the skills helped me land my job at NPR. I even hosted a cooking class for my colleagues to celebrate AAPI Heritage Month.
My blog has given me a space to write about what I love, connecting me to new internet friends. Most importantly, it has allowed me to celebrate my Vietnamese culture with those who share a deep love for cooking.
28.What can we learn about the author from the first two paragraphs?
A.She was particular about friends.
B.She stopped cooking after college.
C.Her plan of a blog started in childhood.
D.Her family inspired her love for cooking.
29.Which of the following best describes the author’s mother’s way of cooking?
A.She cooked by experience. B.She followed strict instructions.
C.She adjusted family recipes. D.She valued accurate measurements.
30.What is paragraph 4 mainly about concerning Bun Bo Bae?
A.Its impact. B.Its origin. C.Its popularity. D.Its development.
31.What is the purpose of the passage?
A.To provide cooking advice. B.To share a blogging experience.
C.To document a family practice. D.To recommend Vietnamese dishes.
【答案】28.D 29.A 30.A 31.B

Soon, I was measuring, steaming and stir-frying my way toward kitchen mastery.(我童年的大部分时间都是和妈妈在厨房里度过的。小时候,我会看她做饭。我的职责是从给她递食材开始的。很快,我就学会了测量、蒸、炒菜,逐渐精通厨房)”可推知,作者对对烹饪的热爱是受到妈妈的影响。故选D项。
29.推理判断题。根据第三段中“My mom taught me how to “measure with my heart.” Instead of following strict measurements, I learned to cook by tasting and feeling my food.(我妈妈教我如何“用心衡量”。我学会了通过品尝和感受食物来烹饪,而不是严格遵循标准)”可知,作者的妈妈是凭经验来烹饪。故选A项。
30.主旨大意题。根据第四段中“Bun Bo Bae originally served as a space for me to put down what I learned. I didn’t want the secret knowledge behind my family’s dishes to disappear one day if the oral tradition ended. As my followers grew, so did my confidence in the kitchen. It also grew my confidence at work. I taught myself social media and web building, and the skills helped me land my job at NPR. I even hosted a cooking class for my colleagues to celebrate AAPI Heritage Month.(Bun Bo Bae最初是一个让我记录所学烹饪知识的空间。 故选A项。

(23-24高二上·广东茂名·期末)“Every life is a boat, the dream is the boat sail.” Every child has a dream of what they want to be. When Renee Butts was little, her dream was to become a volunteer firefighter because her father was one. Sadly, when she was 14, her beloved father died and she was never able to do volunteer work with him. However, Renee’s story didn’t end there. She was determined and never gave up, which makes for a good firefighter.
Now Renee is a member of the Carme l Fire Department, where she is required to be an Emergency Medical Technician. She should also be ready to deal with any emergency, like fighting a fire, dealing with a car accident or helping someone who’s sick. Sometimes she is in the driver’s seat or using the water pump. Actually, sometimes people die in the accident, for which I am very sorry.” With 140 people in her station, Renee is one of the only three women, but that doesn’t bother her. (23-24高二上·广东广州·期末)As a teacher for a decade, I find that college kids want to carve their routes and live out their journeys. But so many of them don’t know what they want to do—what major to choose? What career to pursue? What topic to write their papers on? More importantly, they wonder why any of these things really matters.
One of the best books I have read is Dr. Meg Jay’s The Defining Decade. Basically, Dr. Meg Jay explains one’s 20s have an enormous effect across years and even generations to come, in terms of careers, families, friends, and relationships. She states that our brain completes the second and last growth peak in our 20s as it rewires itself for true adulthood.
From the time we are in primary school, people ask us what we want to be when we grow up. I once asked my friend’s eight-year-old the question and she said, “I’m just a kid; I have no way of knowing what I want to be when I’m an adult.” Maybe the questions should be: What means something to you? What makes you happy? What do you care about regardless of any rewards? This train of thought may benefit all.
In a world of easy access, today’s students can find everything they need after a few clicks on the Internet. Sure, that’s great, quick and convenient. But there is something important missed in the hunt persistence(坚持), patience, and concentration. So I’m grateful that when I was in college, I still had to visit the library to find the resources I needed to write a research paper. During this process, I reflected on what truly made me happy and what I genuinely cared about.
My friend Brandon recently told me that he often woke up in the early morning and realized things he cared about were not what he devoted his life to, because he took the way that others considered good when he was in his 20s, instead of the way that was right for him. What you want to be when you grow up is something that may change throughout your life, but it’s likely that your passion and motivation will always come along.
36.What idea does Dr. Meg Jay express in her book?
A.One’s twenties matter a great deal in one’s life.
B.The brain is in its most active stage in our 20s.
C.One’s career choice affects their family members.
D.The old have a long-time influence on the young.
37.Why does the author include a series of questions in Paragraph 3?
A.To help people find out what they truly love.
B.To call on people to make plans for the future.
C.To encourage people to have a positive attitude.
D.To warn people to learn life skills at an early age.
38.What is the author’s attitude towards students’ turning to the Internet?
A.Favorable. B.Optimistic. C.Objective. D.Uncaring.
39.What can we learn from Brandon’s story?
A.Laziness in youth spells regret in old age.
B.Our dreams keep changing throughout life.
C.Our life journey is always full of uncertainties.
D.We should follow our heart and live a full life.
【答案】36.A 37.A 38.C 39.D

She states that our brain completes the second and last growth peak in our 20s as it rewires itself for true adulthood.(我读过的最好的书之一是Meg Jay博士的《定义的十年》。 故选A项。
37.推理判断题。由文章第三段“Maybe the questions should be: What means something to you? What makes you happy? What do you care about regardless of any rewards? This train of thought may benefit all.(也许问题应该是:什么对你有意义?什么让你快乐?不管有什么奖励,你都关心什么?这种思路可能对所有人都有利。)”可知,作者提出这些问题是帮助人们找到他们真正喜欢的东西。故选A项。
38.推理判断题。由文章第四段“In a world of easy access, today’s students can find everything they need after a few clicks on the Internet. Sure, that’s great, quick and convenient. 39.推理判断题。与文章最后一段“My friend Brandon recently told me that he often woke up in the early morning and realized things he cared about were not what he devoted his life to, because he took the way that others considered good when he was in his 20s, instead of the way that was right for him. She noticed that while many artists in her homeland were involved in traditional art forms such as portraiture, sketching, painting, and handwriting, resin (树脂) art was relatively unexplored “I didn’t have any specific role model or inspiration for this form of art. (23-24高二上·广东广州·期末)I still remember the first time I told my then-six-year-old son, Lev, that a clam makes calls with its “shell phone”. The laugh of recognition when he first got the joke was a moment I won’t ever forget. When I told it a second time in front of his friends Henry and Amir, I could see how proud he was that I had made his friends laugh. Excuse the showing off, but I was the cool dad.
By Lev’s ninth birthday party, things had begun to change. After the seventh or eighth time I asked him “What do you call someone with no body and no nose?” he rolled his eyes. “I get it, Dad…” “…Nobody knows!” “Stop it, Dad!” I immediately shifted gears into food puns, but I got nothing except head shakes. I’m pretty sure I heard him say “Sorry about my dad” to his friends as they all ran off to play on their phones together.
I used to be the life of every kids party. I was the one who always had a knock-knock joke at the party. Other parents loved that I could show up at any event and distract their kids with age-appropriate wordplay. Sure, there were other dads with their jokes, but I felt as if no one ever stole my crown.
I tell you all this because after a lot of soul-searching, I believe it’s time. My kids aren’t grown and out of the house, but I’ve come to realize that I’ll never be able to compete with my past success. I need our relationship to grow. I need to be able to talk to my children about topics other than how a witch’s car goes “broom, broom”.
Thus, I’m offering my series of jokes for sale. Puns, knock-knock jokes, goofy faces, and double takes. I’m done with them all, and it feels like the right time to sell my treasure to some deserving new dad.
Like all great works of art, my collection is priceless. But I can tell you that the first time you get your kids to laugh at the line “I don’t trust stairs. They’re always up to something,” you’ll feel it’s worth any price tag.
44.Why did Lev lose interest in his father’s jokes?
A.Because he no longer considered the jokes fun.
B.Because the jokes were not as funny as before.
C.Because his friends couldn’t understand the jokes.
D.Because he preferred to play on phones with his friends.
45.How does the writer feel about his jokes?
A.Boring. B.Unique. C.Useless. D.Valuable.
46.What is the best title for the text?
A.A cool dad with lots of jokes. B.The pride of giving jokes to kids.
C.For sale my collection of dad jokes. D.The best jokes popular among kids.
【答案】44.A 45.D 46.C

Maria Sibylla Merian-drawing from life
In 17th-century Europe, it was unheard of for a woman to travel by herself, but that didn’t stop Maria Sibylla Merian. In 1699, she and her 2l-year-old daughter Dorothea sailed from Amsterdam to Suriname in South America. The three-month voyage was dangerous but she was determined to go. Besides, she was on a bold mission. She would be the first person to go to a foreign country to study and paint insects directly from nature.
When they arrived in Suriname, Maria and Dorothea started working. Day after day, they took their painting materials into the hot and humid rainforest to collect and draw insects and plants. Artists had never done such a thing before. Still life painters drew from dead specimens. But Maria had always been interested in painting living animals and plants, and her favourite subjects were insects.
In the rainforest, she climbed ladders to study and collect insects. She had trees cut down so she could see what lived at the top level of the forest more than a hundred feet overhead. Maria combined both art and science in her work. As a skilled observer, she kept detailed notes.
Maria planned to stay in Suriname for five years, painting and collecting insects and plants that Europeans had never seen. She learnt about the medicinal plants of the area and expanded her interest to spiders, birds, lizards and snakes. She planned to publish a book of her new work on her return to Amsterdam.
After two years, she had to leave Suriname. The heat was unbearable and she was ill with malaria. But she had more than enough material for a book. In June 1701, Maria and Dorothea sailed back to Amsterdam with many paintings and specimens—butterflies preserved in brandy, bottles with crocodiles and snakes, lizards’ eggs and boxes of pressed insects.
Four years later, in 1705, Maria published the book, Metamorphosis Insectorum Surinamensium, for which she is best known. The paintings of insects and plants in their natural habitats revolutionized scientific illustration and advanced the scientific study of insects.

(23-24高二上·广东广州·期末)Brad Ryan returned to his hometown after six years to pursue his studies. But he avoided contact with his grandmother, Grandma Joy, aged 85, due to a past disagreement.
Years later, while hiking the Appalachian Trail, he found himself thinking a lot about his grandmother and the time they spent at Blue Rock State Park looking for crawfish. Then, Brad decided to visit Grandma Joy.
Grandma Joy did what came natural to her. She gave him a big hug. “It was familiar and yet strange,” said Brad. “It looked the same. But I was looking at a woman who had aged.” They made small talks but then there was an awkward pause. Brad broke the ice by suggesting a visit to Blue Rock State Park.
On the way there, Grandma Joy admitted she had many regrets in her life. One of them was that aside from this state park, she’d never had the chance to see the great outdoors. When they arrived at the creek, the special place where long ago they’d searched out the crawfish, they stood silently, lost in thought. A loud splash broke the silence. The tail of a massive beaver (狸) gliding below broke the water’s surface. Stunned, they both laughed. “We looked at each other,” said Brad, “and we both realized we were still the same people.”
To make up for Grandma’s sadness of not seeing more of nature, Brad planned a camping trip to Great Smoky Mountains with Grandma. Despite Grandma Joy’s age, she surprised Brad by eagerly agreeing to go.
That night, they sat by the campfire, feeling its warmth and gazing at the stars. Bra d and Grandma opened the lock box of their past. They talked about families and parents, about loss, pain and regret, telling each other they’d wasted too many years being separated.
The camping trip ended, but their outdoor adventure continued. Since then they have visited 62 national parks, covering over 50,000 miles in Brad’s car. Their age difference doesn’t matter as they are still on their way.

(23-24高二上·广东肇庆·期末)After most people complete their undergraduate degree, they either take a break or jump into a job. Few, like Brianna Craft, set out to save the world.
It started when she was a freshman sitting in an environmental studies class in 2006. Craft was shocked when the professor described the harm climate change was having on people. She records the moment in her new book, Everything That Rises: A Climate Change Memoir.
After graduation, Craft spent a year in AmeriCorps, focusing on protecting the environment. AmeriCorps is an organization connecting individuals and organizations to help communities tackle their toughest challenges. “That helped me figure out that my future was not in doing science,” she says. Instead, she wanted to work with people and policy.
She then had an opportunity to attend the UN climate negotiations (磋商). That, in turn, prepared her for her current role as a senior researcher at the London-based International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED). Her focus is to ensure that the lowest contributors to greenhouse gases and those most affected by climate change have a voice in international climate negotiations.
For five years, Craft attended and supported climate conferences around the world, leading to the signing of the Paris Agreement in 2015. Craft says, “I wanted people to care about the work I did in the climate negotiations, and why we pushed so hard to form this agreement.” That led her to write Everything That Rises: A Climate Change Memoir.
Craft brings the viewpoint of an African American woman from a rural northwest community. She weaves (编织) together several storylines-including her difficult childhood with an irresponsible parent, her self-discovery in college and her work to help work towards climate agreements and ensure that even the smallest countries have a voice.

Renee works nine to eleven days a month on 24-hour shifts. She also has a family to care for, as her husband is also a busy firefighter. Dealing with housework and working so much can show her great determination.
When I asked Renee what the best part of her job was, she replied, “Helping people and saving lives.” I think that shows signs of being a true hero. She’s always willing to do anything for anyone in need. Renee says that her job is frightening at times, but extremely exciting. “The worst part of my job is that I see death. Actually, sometimes people die in the accident, for which I am very sorry.” With 140 people in her station, Renee is one of the only three women, but that doesn’t bother her. She says everyone can get a fair shot and do the same jobs.
I was inspired by this because I knew I would be very scared to do her job and didn’t know if I could handle seeing people die. We would never live without people like her who have the courage to risk their lives. Renee’s determination rubs off on me and makes me believe that I can do anything.

(23-24高二上·广东广州·期末)Insha Shabir has been interested in art since her childhood. Later, she obtained her bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts and wanted to achieve something in the art field. She noticed that while many artists in her homeland were involved in traditional art forms such as portraiture, sketching, painting, and handwriting, resin (树脂) art was relatively unexplored “I didn’t have any specific role model or inspiration for this form of art. I learned it through YouTube and from foreign artists on Instagram. I was hoping I could contribute to making up for its relative absence,” Insha called.
“Then I just fell for it. The art is created when a runny chemical called epoxy resin is combined with various colour pigments (颜料) and other materials, which produces a combination of unique patterns,” Insha said. She also mentioned that resin art is a unique painting style where one does not need typical brushes, water colour, or oil paints. “When mixed with a hardener, the resin mixture gradually hardens to a solid plastic because a chemical reaction takes place between the materials,” Insha said, adding that the art form is a perfect way for her to make use of recycled waste to express herself.
Insha’s resin artworks have earned praise from art enthusiasts and customers alike, leading her to sell her creations online through various social media platforms such as Instagram and Facebook, where she operates her account under the username “Insha artworks”.

(23-24高二上·广东清远·期末)Maria Sibylla Merian-drawing from life
In 17th-century Europe, it was unheard of for a woman to travel by herself, but that didn’t stop Maria Sibylla Merian.
