Unit6 Detectives
单元主题阅读理解15篇(分层练习)
Agatha Christie was born in Devon, England in 1890. As a shy child, she was taught by teachers at home and unable to properly express her feelings. So she turned to music as a way of expression and, later in life, to writing.
In 1914, at the age of 24, she married Archie Christie, a World War I fighter pilot. While he was off at war, she worked as a nurse. It was while working in a hospital during the war that Christie first came up with the idea of writing a detective novel. Although it was completed in a year, it wasn’t published until 1920, five years later.
The Mysterious Affair at Styles gave the world the impressive Hercule Poirot, a retired Belgian police officer who was to become one of the most important and popular characters in all of fiction. He was a tidy little man, always careful, orderly and a bit funny.
Christie wrote more than 30 novels with Poirot as the main character. Among the most popular were The Murder of Roger Ackroyd (1926), Murder on the Orient Express (1934), and Death on the Nile (1937).
Another of Christie’s most well-known characters was introduced in Murder at the Vicarage in 1930. Miss Jane Marple, an elderly single in the old-fashioned English village of St. Mary Mead, solved all kinds of mysteries with full attention and a sharp sense of feeling.
Christie finally became the accepted Queen of the Golden Age. In all, she wrote over 66 novels, countless short stories and screenplays, and a series of romantic novels using the pen name Mary Westmacott. Several of her works were made into successful films, the most famous being Murder on the Orient Express (1974). In short, she is the single most popular mystery writer of all time. In 1971 she was awarded the high honor of becoming a Dame (爵士封号) of Britain.

Once, there was a bird who realized that his box of valuable coins was missing. So he called the rabbit, the mouse in the forest to help look for the valuable box.
As a good detective (侦探), the mouse was a bit cleverer than the rabbit. After asking the bird all the places he had just been to, he followed the bird’s footprint and came to the great tunnel (隧道) under the forest. On entering, he saw Mr. Mole, but he didn’t say anything to the mole (鼹鼠) about why he was there, he just carried on looking for the missing coins on his own.
The rabbit was also a great detective. Before long, he arrived at the tunnel, too. He was not shy at all. The first thing he did after he arrived was to go and ask the mole if he knew where the coins were. The mole felt very pleased and led the rabbit to the coins. They had been working together for several weeks, and finally, they managed to get the box out of the great tunnel.
So the rabbit and the mole took the coins and were paid for their great work. The mouse, who had been watching all this, learned a lot from it. From then on, he would never allow shyness to ruin (破坏) all his good work. This way of dealing with a person or thing soon turned him into the best detective in the forest.

Sherlock Holmes may be the world’s most famous fictional detective. But in China, someone is able to compete with him in popularity. His name is Di Renjie.
Unlike Holmes, who is a fictional character, Di Renjie (AD 630-700) was a real person in history. He served twice as prime minister in the Tang Dynasty (AD 618-907) under Empress Wu Zetian. When he was the secretary general of the supreme court, he once judged 17,000 cases in a year without complaint.
Maybe that’s why Di has been described as a smart detective and long been popular in print and on screen.
In the 18th century, a crime novel called Dee Goong An was published. Nowadays, there is a popular TV series called Amazing Detective Di Renjie, as well as a series of Detective Dee films.
He even became internationally famous when Dutch diplomat Robert van Gulik (1910-1967) began to write and publish a series of detective novels based on him in the 1950s.
In Gulik’s stories, Di is different from the character in Chinese stories like Dee Goong An, in which he is mostly a righteous official, righting wrongs and helping the poor.
He is called Judge Dee in Gulik’s books and is described as a fit man with a well-trimmed beard. He is a kung fu master and his assistants are all former criminals who help him solve cases.
Dee often travels alone in clever disguises. Sometimes he makes mistakes and takes a while to solve a case. He believes in the power of deductive reasoning. He doesn’t torture criminals to get confessions. Instead, he tricks them into confessing themselves.
Judge Dee is a likeable hero with a human touch. His style is more like a Western detective. It is no wonder why he is called the “Chinese Sherlock Holmes” in the West.

The world knows Sherlock Holmes (福尔摩斯) because of the British writer Arthur Conan Doyle and his detective book series about Holmes. But the West knows Di Renjie or Judge Dee, China’s Sherlock Holmes, thanks to Dutch sinologist (汉学家) Robert van Gulik and his great work Celebrated Cases of Judge Dee. Robert came to know Dee, a character based on the historical figure Di Renjie from the Tang dynasty, and the crime novel Di Gong An when he was working in China in the 1940s. He had great admiration for Dee, so he translated the book into English.
Between 1950 and 1967, Robert wrote 16 novels and 8 short stories. In the series, he described cases solved by Judge Dee. He also introduced plenty of culture and customs of the Tang dynasty.
Once the novel came out, it won western people’s hearts. It has been translated into over 10 languages and has sold millions of copies worldwide. It has greatly helped the western people get a better understanding of China. Besides, many adaptations (改编) inspired by the novel have been made around the world including China. A new TV series, Judge Dee’s Mystery, has been aired in China. Many people who watch it think highly of it.
“I read the stories when I was 10 or 11 years old. It didn’t mean very much to me at that time. In later life, I have re-read the stories several times and discovered how special Judge Dee was as described by my father. Between the lines, there is a lot of wisdom in the writing,” said Thomas van Gulik, son of Robert van Gulik.

The mystery stories of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle are famous all over the world.
The detective in his stories is called Sherlock Holmes. He solves mysteries in a most surprising way. His assistant, Dr Watson, watches with admiration and then writes up the story of the mystery afterwards.
This is a useful story writing skill. Because Watson is not very clever, the story remains a mystery until the end. The readers can sometimes pick up some clues before he does! Then, to make Watson understand the mystery, Holmes has to explain it all, step by step. So we, the readers, get to see it step by step too. Watson is almost as good a character in the story as Sherlock Holmes!
The very first time they meet, Holmes greatly surprises Watson. When they are first introduced, Holmes says to Watson, “How do you do? I see you have been to Afghanistan (阿富汗).”
Watson is too amazed by this to ask Holmes how he knows this. Watson has, indeed, been to Afghanistan. Later, he asks Holmes about it. Holmes explains that there is nothing magical about what he does. He gets to know it all by very, very careful observation (观察).
Observation One
Watson was introduced to Holmes as a doctor. Yet Holmes thought that the way he stood and walked made him seem like a soldier. So, this meant he was probably an army doctor.
Observation Two
Watson’s face was quite dark skinned. But his wrists were pale. So his dark face was probably sun burnt. This meant that he had been to a hot, sunny country.
Observation Three
At the time, the British army had soldiers at bases in many parts of the world. So there were still a lot of places to choose from. However, Holmes saw that Watson looked very tired and he was always holding his left arm, as if it was painful. So, he had probably been with the army to a place where they were fighting. There was only one place where the British army was fighting at that time: Afghanistan.

A.Holmes explains how he knows Watson has been to Afghanistan
B.Holmes surprises Watson by telling that he has been to Afghanistan
C.Watson tells Holmes he has been to Afghanistan
D.Watson asks Holmes how he knows he has been to Afghanistan
4.In “Observation two”. The underlined words sun burnt probably means ________.
A.caused by illness B.made brown by sun
C.painted by make-up D.given by his mother.

Liu Wei often works at night. He searches in parking lot. He hides himself in long grass. He carefully checks underground pipelines (管道). The 35-year-old man from Shanghai is a detective (侦探). He’s not catching criminals, though. Instead, he’s looking for people’s missing pets.
Liu began to do the job in 2012. He has helped to find more than 1,000 cats, dogs, lizards (蜥蜴) and even snakes for their owners so far. “It’s a great sense of achievement when I finally find a missing pet after days of hard work,” he said.
Before heading out, Liu usually asks his clients (客户) many questions about their lost pets. The information helps him decide where to start. He also knows how to make good use of modern equipment. For example, an infrared thermal imager (红外热像仪) can be helpful in locating a pet that may be hiding in a hole. In Liu’s experience, cats have a better chance of being found. They just hide in dark, small places instead of moving very far away. Dogs, however, are more likely to be stolen. This makes finding a missing dog more difficult.
The pet detective business (生意) has been growing fast in recent years as more people keep pets at home. Hiring (雇佣) a pet detective is not cheap. It can cost more than 10,000 yuan, but it’s worth it for pet owners. “They’re not animals,” Liu said. “They’re members of the family.”

Detective Drake was having a rest when the phone rang. He yawned and picked it up. “Hello? What? I’ll take the case! I will depart (启程) at once!” Drake grabbed his umbrella, which was suitable for the rain outside, and walked out into the noisy city.
The Case
Drake pulled up to the police station. “We’ve been getting unfinished math problems in the mail,” the Chief said. “They’re signed ‘Guessss Who?’ Every day the number of mails grow bigger. We keep getting more. They are clogging up the mail room.”
Drake looked at the paper in the Chief’s hand. He observed one letter’s clue:

Some wonderfully creative uses of X-rays have been in the world of art. But the most impressive one is to uncover what has been covered up. Details unfolded by an X-ray of a painting can’t be seen any other way. For example, in the past, paintings were often repaired if small pieces of paint fell off the canvas (帆布). These repairs cannot be seen just by looking at the painting. It takes an X-ray to discover where the repairs have been made.
An X-ray of a painting is one of the best ways to tell if it was created by a famous painter or if it is a forgery (赝品). If there is a question as to whether an old master has painted a certain painting or not, X-rays are made and compared to those of paintings that are known to be original. If the brushstrokes (笔迹), for example, are shown to be totally different than in other work done by a certain artist, then the painting is proved to be a fake copy.
Since modern paints are usually made from different materials than paints of hundreds of years ago, the image they leave on an X-ray film looks different. This is another way X-rays can be used to spot a forgery. A modern artist will try to make a forgery look hundreds of years old by painting dirty varnish on it or by using artificial means to get the varnish to look cracked. To the naked eye the forgery may look old, but when a careful study of the X-ray image is made, the deceptions obvious.
It was common many years ago for an artist to finish a painting, decide it wasn’t any good, and paint a completely different picture on top of it. Or artists would paint over others’ work —it was their version of recycling. Taking an X-ray is the only way to find out if there is a picture underneath the picture you see with your eyes. Sometimes museums will be more interested in the painting beneath than the one on top, and will restore the older one by having the top layer painstakingly removed.
1.Why do people need X-ray to discover repairs on a painting?
A.Because the technology of X-ray is more accurate.
B.Because X-ray is much cheaper.
C.Because the law requires the painting to be tasted by X-ray.
D.Because it is cheap.
2.How to tell the real masterpiece apart from the forgery?
A.By comparing the painting with the original paintings drew by certain artist under an X-ray.
B.By removing the top layer of the painting.
C.By using some different materials to have a test.
D.By betting the vanish to look cracked
3.What is the main purpose of the article?
A.To provide information to the police who are looking for stolen art.
B.To persuade art dealers to check for fake copies before selling art.
C.To explain how modern technology can be applied in unique ways.
D.To help artists restore damaged artwork to its original appearance.

A.make repairs on paintings in the past
B.identify the authenticity of an artwork

In China, pets are often considered as part of the family and are described as “fur children”. Unluckily, many pet owners in China experience the heartbreak of losing their beloved pets. The reasons for pets going missing can be different such as running away because of fear or anxiety, getting lost while on walks, or being stolen for illegal (非法的) pet trade. This has given rise to a new industry of “pet detectives” who specialize (专营) in finding and saving lost pets and reuniting them with their owners.
In recent years, the pet detective industry has appeared as a new job in China’s big cities. With the growing number of pet owners, there has been an increase in need for professionals who can help locate (确定位置) lost pets. Most pet detectives work alone or with just a few partners and can charge between 3,000 yuan and 30,000 yuan per case depending on the difficulty of the search.
Pet detective Yan Zhiyong from Zhengzhou in central China’s Henan province is one such professional who, after receiving an order, goes to the scene with one to two partners equipped with headlamps, torches (电筒), and other tools necessary for locating missing pets. The rise of this industry shows the importance that pets hold in Chinese households and how far owners are willing to go to ensure their beloved “fur children” are safe and healthy.
Pet detective work is not without its challenges. These professionals must be prepared to work long hours, often in difficult conditions, to search for lost pets. They may have to go through strange neighborhoods or areas, and deal with uncooperative or unfriendly people who are not interested in this case. Moreover, pet detectives must be skilled at understanding animals’ behavior and the practical ways in order to locate missing pets.
Although there’re many challenges, the need for pet detective services continues to grow in China as more and more pet owners seek help in finding their beloved “fur children”.
1.From passage 1, we can know that many pet owners in China feel sad because ________.
A.their “fur children” get lost
B.it’s expensive to search for their lost pets
C.others tell them their pets might be stolen
D.their pets will run away from home one day
2.According to the passage, what can be the cause of the appearance of a new industry?
A.The difficulty of the job itself. B.The requirement of working skills.
C.The increase of customers’ needs. D.The high payment from customers.
3.The following paragraph can best go after ________.
In the field of pet detection, every case is personal. It’not just about solving a mystery. it’s about realizing a family’s completeness, about bringing home a piece of someone’s heart. These pet detectives don’t carry guns, they carry the weight of responsibility on their shoulders and love in their hearts.
A.Paragraph 1 B.Paragraph 2 C.Paragraph 3 D.Paragraph 4

(an extract from a detective story)
That evening Holmes again wore different clothes, and a large, black hat. But it was not just the clothes that were different. He changed his face, his hair — everything.
He was a different man.
We walked together to Serpentine Avenue. Outside the house there were a lot of people who were smoking, laughing and talking. Holmes and I walked up and down in front of the house.
“You see,” said Holmes to me, I don’t think she wants her new husband to see the photo.
But where is it? At her bank? No. Such a woman likes to keep important things herself. I’m sure it’s in her house.
“But the King’s men tried to find it!” I said.
“Yes. But they didn’t know where to look for it!” said Holmes. “But how will you know?” I asked. “She’ll show me. She’ll have to.”
Just then Irene’s taxi arrived. One of the men in the street ran to open the door and then another man pushed him. Other men were also pushing and shouting, and a fight began. Irene was in the middle of it, but Holmes ran to help her. Then suddenly he fell to the ground, with blood running down his face. Irene hurried to her front door, but she looked back. “How kind of him to help me! Is the poor man hurt?” she called.
“He’s dead,” cried some voices. “No, he’s only hurt,” cried others. “Bring him into the living room,” she said.
Some people carried Holmes into the house. I waited outside the window and watched. I saw how beautiful Irene was. Then Holmes put up his hand, and I threw the smoke-stick into the room. At once, the people in the street and in the house all began to shout “Fire!” very loudly.
The house was full of smoke. I walked away, and ten minutes later Holmes came to meet me.
“Well done, Watson,” he said. “Have you got the photo?” I asked.
“I know where it is. She showed me,” he answered. “But why did she show you?”
“It’s easy,” he said, and laughed. “You saw all those people in the street? I paid them to help us. It wasn’t a real fight and the blood wasn’t real. When people shout “Fire!”, a woman runs to the most important thing in her house, her baby, her gold, or ... a photo. Irene ran to find her photo which is in a cupboard in the living room. I saw it. But I did not take it. Tomorrow we will go to the palace and tell it to the King first. And then we will go to her house with the King. We’ll go very early, before she gets up. The King himself can take the photo from the cupboard.
And then we’ll go.

Don’t Judge a Book by Its Cover
Ever since I was a little girl, I’ve loved reading crime and detective novels, so I guess it was pretty normal that I started writing them when I was older. However, my family is very big on having a traditional career (职业) and so when I said that I wanted to go to college and study writing, my parents told me that I couldn’t. They told me that I had to study for a degree so that I would achieve a career, and not something as risky as writing. I suppose I could have studied journalism (新闻专业), but I didn’t want to lose interest in writing because it would be something I would do every day for work, not for pleasure. I thought that teaching looked like a pretty good compromise (妥协), especially because of the long holidays. It was a good choice: by the time I was twenty-five, I’d already finished two novels and had an agent.
To be honest, I never meant to keep my being a crime writer a secret or anything, and my friends have always known. One of the reasons most people don’t know is that my agent told me that my name Hazel sounded too much like a romance (浪漫) novelist for older women. She suggested Brooke Lane and I thought, “Well, if you think it’ll make me successful, okay.” I’d totally forgotten about it until I walked into school one day and saw one of my workmates reading my novel. I asked her some questions about it, and it was so clear that she had no idea that I’d written it—she even offered to lend it to me after she’d finished! Of course, sometimes I wonder what my students would think if they knew that their teacher was going home on the weekend to write about murders and dead bodies, but I think my parents probably did me a favor: my teaching job keeps me in touch with the real world.
1.Hazel is probably ________.
A.an agent B.a journalist
C.a teacher and artist D.a teacher and writer
2.The underlined words “is very big on” in the passage most probably mean ________.
A.to give no advice B.to like something very much
C.to have more experiences D.to misunderstand something
3.Hazel finally realized that her parents’ advice on her career was _________.
A.helpful B.exciting C.disappointing D.risky

1.What’s the main idea of Paragraph 2?
A.Who Di Renjie was. B.How Di Renjie became famous.
C.Why Di Renjie was smart. D.What Di Renjie did as a judge.

A.In 1990s. B.In the 18th century. C.In 1950s. D.During 1910-1967.

A.He served twice as prime minister in the Tang Dynasty.
B.He once judged 17,000 cases in a year without complaint.

4.What can we get from Gulik’s stories?
①Dee is a great official. ②Dee is called a Judge. ③Dee likes to help the poor.

⑥Dee is a kung fu master.
A.①②③ B.②③⑤ C.②④⑤ D.②⑤⑥

A.Sherlock Holmes B.A famous TV series
C.Chinese Sherlock Holmes D.Gulik’s novels
In the eyes of Thomas, it’s fantastic that his father brought the master detective of the Tang dynasty, Di Renjie, back to life in the Judge Dee crime novels.

B.Holmes surprises Watson by telling that he has been to Afghanistan

C.working experience D.clients’ information
4.Why has the pet detective business been growing fast in recent years?
A.Because hiring a pet detective is expensive.
B.Because only a few people want to do the business.
C.Because pets have become family members.
D.Because more and more people keep pets at home.
