Tech businessman Jared Isaacman, who made a fortune in tech and fighter jets, bought an entire flight and took three “everyday” people with him to space. He aimed to use the private trip to raise $200 million for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, half coming from his own pocket.
His crew included a St. Jude worker with direct ties to the activity, representing the activity’s pillar (核心) of Hope, a professor, and another person, representing the pillar of Generosity, chosen as part of a $200 million St. Jude fundraising program. All were invited to join in donating to reach the ambitious overall campaign goal in support of St. Jude’s current multi-billion dollar expansion to speed up research advances and save more children worldwide. Anyone donating to St. Jude would be entered into a random drawing for the “Generosity” seat.
Isaacman has been “really interested in space” since he was in kindergarten. He dropped out of high school when he was 16, got a GED certificate and started a business in his parents’ basement that became the beginning of Shift4 Payments, a credit card processing company. He set a speed record flying around the world in 2009 while raising money for the Make-A-Wish program, and later established Draken International, the world’s largest private fleet (舰队) of fighter jets.
Now he has realized his childhood dream-boarding a spaceship, launched in Florida and orbiting the Earth for three days in the history-making event. He called it an “epic (史诗般的) adventure”. “I truly want us to live in a world 50 or 100 years from now where people are jumping their rockets,” Isaacman said. “And if we’re going to live in that world, we’d better deal with childhood cancer successfully along the way.”
24. Why did Isaacman raise funds for St. Jude?
A. To expand a fundraising programme. B. To perform an act of great generosity.
C. To make his childhood dream come true. D. To encourage St. Jude’s life-saving work.
25. What is mainly talked about in paragraph 3?
A. The commercial skills of Isaacman. B. The growth experience of Isaacman.
C. The reason for Isaacman’s good deeds. D. The beginning of Isaacman’s business.
26. What can be learned about the “epic adventure”?
A. It was a multi-day journey. B. It will be common in the future.
C. It involved three civilians in total. D. It is a symbol of hope for a better life.
27. What message is conveyed in Isaacman’s story?
A. No sweet without sweat. B. Many hands make light work.
C. Nothing is impossible to a willing heart. D. A penny saved is a penny earned.

In an attempt to explore unknown environments, a Chinese team created an octopus (章鱼) — inspired flexible robotic arm capable of sensing and controlling objects in limited spaces and underwater.
According to the study published in the latest edition of Science Robotics, the robot allowed blindfolded human operators to guide its arm, using suckers (吸盘) to pick up various objects, including a toy shark and a smooth metal ball, via a single-finger glove.
This new invention created by a team of researchers, led by Wen Li from Beihang University was inspired by the octopus, which moves its soft arms to catch its games with sensitive suckers.
A simple strategy like this can be used as a model for robotic grasping, controllable with a few inputs, as well as a highly deformable arm with sensing capabilities.
Wen’s team fixed electronics and circuits into the robots while maintaining their deformability. The researchers presented a stretchable electronics-integrated soft octopus arm with 16 air-driven devices and multiple degrees of freedom.
The robot's stretchable, liquid-metal-based electronic circuit can stand super stretching force to perform tasks autonomously in a limited environment, findings from the study showed.
The soft arm with two rows of sensory sucking cups that connect with the wearer's finger can perform a reaching-grasping-returning motion across a range of up to 1.5 times its original arm length, similar to the biological counterpart (对应方), the study revealed.
“This robotic model provides new prospects and development ideas for the future interactive applications of flexible robots, including medical robots, seabed exploration robots, and so on” said the expert.
28. What inspired the invention of the robotic arm according to the passage?
A. The limited spaces underwater.
B. The special biological structure of the octopus.
C. The desire to explore the living environment of octopus.
D. The team work of the researchers from Beihang University.
29. What's the meaning of the underlined word “deformable” in paragraph 4?
A. Powerful. B. Changeable. C. Steady. D. Active.
30. Which device is integrated into the robot?
A. Plastic circuits. B. Suckers of octopuses.
C. Electronic sensors. D. Arms of octopuses.
31. What do the experts imply in the last paragraph?
A. Octopus is a very magic underwater creature.
B. Creativity plays a very important part in science.
C. The unknown world offers possibility for innovation.
D. One invention can bring about a chain reaction of breakthroughs.
D
The 20th century saw the world re-adapt itself to the introduction of the car. Streets were widened and shops needed mass parking. The modern city is built in the image of the car. But what if it didn’t have to be like that? Dr. Robert Martin, Head of Mobility at Danish architectural company JAJA, believes we have to go back to the drawing board of cities. JAJA has worked on several plans for ways to remove cars from cities and redesign city spaces.
Martin advocates for the idea of the “15-minute city”. It’s about creating several centers within a city. Removing the primacy (首位) of the downtown center, people go to their own local center which has all their regular facilities.
JAJA is based out of Copenhagen, a city which is known for its lack of cars and bike-friendly infrastructure (基础设施). Martin notes that honor is somewhat unearned. “Over the last 20 years, Copenhagen’s seen an increasing amount of car ownership in the city center.” Still, the ideal of Copenhagen is the origin of the change JAJA wants to see in more cities. Put them on a “mobility diet”, Martin suggests, and re-prioritize lanes (重新确定车道优先顺序) for cars and for people to walk and cycle in. Where you aren’t creating cycle routes, there’s also the opportunity to build green spaces to take in CO2 and heat.
He points out that it’s about reducing cars, not cleaning them off completely. The need to travel privately around countries and the transport of goods into cities can’t be wished away by the desire for a better city. So, Martin suggests that cars can be shared. Zipcar is a popular car-sharing app in London. Then there’s the way goods are brought into cities. Trucks can travel into city centers at night to avoid traffic, and for smaller packages, “London’s one of the leaders in terms of bike delivery,” he says.
What does the future look like? It might be interesting to question how our cities will continually change.
32. Which is a “15-minute city”?
A. A city with wide streets.
B. A city with enough parking.
C. A city with a downtown center.
D. A city with easily accessible centers.
33. Why does Martin think Copenhagen has an unearned honor?
A. It doesn’t have enough infrastructure. B. It has an increasing number of cars.
C. It has a quiet city center. D. It is not car-friendly.
34. What suggestion does Martin put forward for reducing car numbers?
A. Night-time private car use. B. Widespread bike-sharing service.
C. Green small package delivery. D. Continuous improvement of Zipcar.
35. Which of the following could be the best title for the text?
A. Cars in Cities: To Be or Not to Be?
B. The 15-Minute City: An Ideal Model
C. Redesigning City Spaces: A New Trend
D. JAJA’s Plans: A Solution to Urban Problems

The sun was already beginning to sink. The air was somewhat bitter. It was Robert’s 12th birthday. But Robert was walking home alone with his eyes focusing on his worn-out shoes. Kids after school were riding by in twos and threes, ringing their bicycle bells merrily. Robert didn’t raise up his head, but he knew clearly that those guys were wearing big smiles on their faces, and that the strings of their bike wheels were shining in the golden sunlight. “How lucky they are!” Robert thought to himself. He admired everyone who had his own bike. He had dreamed many times that he was one of those who were on their bikes to and from school. He really wanted a bike, especially as a gift for his 12th birthday. However, Robert was clear that his family couldn’t afford it. His parents worked hard only to meet their daily life need. Fortunately, the family lived happily together regardless of the poor condition. Robert should be satisfied with it. But he just couldn’t help feeling sad about not being able to own a bike.
Soon the sun disappeared from nowhere and the street lamps were on, casting Robert’s figure on the ground. Looking down at his moving shadow, Robert stopped his steps suddenly. He stretched out (伸出) both of his arms with his hands holding something tightly, and then raised his right leg and left leg in turn to push himself forward. Definitely, the figure on the ground did as Robert did. It seemed that he was riding a bike. A brand new black handsome bike! A bike that Robert had been dreaming of. The imagination excited and delighted Robert a lot. He sped up his imaginary bike towards his home happily. The air became sweet and gentle.

【67题答案】
【答案】 When Robert got home, the house was dark and it seemed nobody was there. The quietness felt strange, making the place feel bigger and emptier than usual. He walked through the silent rooms, hoping to find a sign of his family. But there was nothing, just the stillness that seemed to follow him. Just when he was about to feel sad, a soft light from the backyard caught his attention. Curious, he headed outside.
Robert rushed excitedly to the yard only to find an old gray bike. His heart dropped a little at first, expecting something different. But then he saw the bike’s shiny new tires and the note next to it, which said: “My dear son, now I can’t afford a completely new one , but I hope you’ll like this one with new tires .” It wasn’t the bike he dreamed of, but it was a gift full of love and memories. It wasn’t new, but it was special. With a mixed emotion, Robert stepped onto the bike happily.
