B Mary Lyon was a leader in women’s education in the nineteenth century. It was a time when women’s education was not considered important in the United States. The States did require each town to provide a school for children, but there were not enough teachers. Most young women were not able to continue their education. If they were, they often were not taught much except French, how to sew (缝) clothing, and music. Mary Lyon felt that women’s education was extremely important. She believed women were teachers both in the home and in the classroom. Mary opened a school for young women in Buckland. She suggested new ways of teaching, including holding discussion groups for students. 高二 (英语)试题 第 5页(共 14 页) Then, Mary began to raise money for her dream school for the higher education of women. This school would own its own property. Its finances would be the responsibility of the directors. It would not depend on any person to continue. And, the students would share in cleaning and cooking to keep costs down. In 1837, Mary Lyon founded Mount Holyoke Female Seminary. In 1893, 44 years after her death, under a state law, Mount Holyoke Female Seminary became the first college to offer women the same kind of education as men. Mary’s efforts led to the spread of higher education for women in the United States. Her influence lasted as many students from her schools went out to teach others. 24. As a child in the late 1980s, he worked on his family’s coffee farm in the hills of Western Kenya. “Every year was the same: seed, plant, ripen, harvest and sell, ” he says. But no longer. Jeremiah Letting and other coffee farmers are suffering from rising temperatures. Some of the world’s best Coffea arabica(小果咖啡) is grown on Mount Kenya. The plant produces more flavorful beans than its poor cousin robusta, which often ends up in instant coffee granules(颗粒). Global warming may reduce the total area that is most suited to growing arabica beans by about half by 2050, according to a recently published paper. Although coffee is only Kenya’s fourth-largest export, it directly or indirectly provides an income for about 6 million people, which accounts for over a tenth of the entire population, according to the Kenyan government. “People are not even able to have three meals a day without a secure income,” Mr Letting says. Some farmers are trying to adapt to warming by moving uphill. Yet this pushes them into areas long used for growing tea, threatening tea growth. Kenya’s government-funded Coffee Research Institute is trying to find other solutions, such as encouraging farmers to plant trees to shade their coffee bushes. Growing a hybrid is also advised to combine the hardiness of robusta with the flavour of arabica. People who are particular about coffee may turn up their noses at it, but they may have little choice but to swallow it. Another option may be entirely new varieties. Researchers at the Royal Botanic Gardens in London, are investigating a wild type of coffee, Coffea stenophylla. It is delicious and can also take the heat. But it produces less coffee beans than existing varieties and it may be years before it is widely grown. Without a breakthrough of some sort, Vern Long of World Coffee Research warns, “We’re just going to be drinking instant coffee.” 28. What’s the effect of global warming on coffee farming? A. Reduced yield of tasty coffee beans. B. More export of coffee for the farmers. 高二 (英语)试题 第 7页(共 14 页) C. Moving downhill for better farmlands. D. Less income for the state government. 29. What does the underlined part “turn up their noses at it” probably mean? A. Become interested in the coffee. B. Sing high praise for the coffee. C. Feel unsatisfied with the coffee. D. Pay high attention to the coffee. 30. How does Vern Long feel about the future of coffee production? A. Cautious. B. Optimistic. C. Uncertain. D. Concerned. 31. What’s the main idea of the passage? A. Arabica coffee beans are dying out in Kenya. B. Coffee farmers struggle against climate crisis. C. Short supplies are letting coffee lovers down. D. Kenyan coffee exports decline in world trade. D Teen brains aged faster than normal from stress by at least three years, a study has found. The study, published in Biological Psychiatry: Global Open Science, was the first to compare examinations of the physical structures of teenagers’ brains from before and after the stress started, and to document significant differences. Researchers knew teens had higher levels of depression, anxiety and fearfulness than before the stress. But we knew nothing about the effects on their brains. The researchers found growth in brain areas that control access to some memories and help control fear, stress and other emotions. Premature(过早的) aging of kids’ brains isn’t a positive development. Their stressful childhood experiences not only make people easier to suffer from depression, anxiety and other mental illnesses, but they can raise the risk of cancer, heart disease and other long-term negative outcomes. The scientists tried to make out how the stress itself may have impacted the physical structure of the teens’ brains and their mental health. They matched pairs of volunteer teens with the same age, gender and stress. “That allowed us to compare 16-year-olds before the stress with different 16-year-olds assessed after 高二 (英语)试题 第 8页(共 14 页) the stress,” said Ian Gotlib, a psychology professor at Stanford University. To determine the brain age of their samples, the researchers fed their brain examinations into a machine-learning model developed by the ENIGMA-Brain Age working group, a co-operation among scientists who share their brain image data sets. They also evaluated mental health outcomes reported by the matched pairs. They found more severe symptoms of anxiety, depression and internalizing(内在化的) problems in the group that had experienced the stress. Dan Siegel, clinical professor of psychiatry at the UCLA School of Medicine, noted that many individuals experience post-traumatic(创伤后的) growth after a stressful experience. “This is a useful initial study,” agreed David Fassler, clinical professor of psychiatry at the University of Vermont. “I expect the results will inform the design of future research initiatives.” 32. What can we learn from the first two paragraphs? A. Researchers had a good knowledge of aging. B. Bad memories resulted in negative emotions. C. Brain growth improved teenagers’ happiness. D. Stress greatly influenced teenagers’ brains. 33. What enabled scientists to do research according to Ian Gotlib? A. The participation of volunteer teenagers. B. The application of advanced technology. C. The accurate analysis of the data provided. D. The previous experience of the researchers. 34. Why was the machine-learning model developed? A. To satisfy the need of the market. B. To find the brain age of samples. C. To predict mental health outcomes. D. To solve internalizing problems. 35. What was David Fassler’s attitude to the study? A.Doubtful. B. Indifferent. C. Favorable. D. Unclear. 高二 (英语)试题 第 9页(共 14 页) 第二节(共 5 小题;每小题 2.5 分,满分 12.5 分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项 中有两项为多余选项。 Body language of pets is different based on what sort of animal you have chosen as your pet. Among them were four friends: Juan, Oscar, Luis, and Alfredo. They were the sons of Mexican immigrants and often felt overlooked by others. However, they all shared a passion for mechanics. One day, two science teachers decided to enter their school in a challenging underwater robotics competition sponsored by NASA(美国 宇航局). The four boys were excited and signed up right away. With passion, they started reaching out to mechanical engineers for help in 高二 (英语)试题 第 13页(共 14 页) designing their robot. They learned that they needed a special material often used in many underwater projects. Sadly, they didn’t have enough money to buy it, so they decided to make it on their own. They searched the city and gathered whatever they could find to build their robot. With the support and guidance of their teachers, they managed to create a working robot using just metal and wires. While they worked on their project, each boy faced personal struggles. Juan felt the pressure of family responsibilities; Oscar was afraid of failing; Luis was laughed at by classmates because of his accent; and Alfredo wished to feel accepted by others. Despite these challenges, they supported each other and stayed determined. After a few test runs of their robot, they headed to the competition. When they arrived at the main pool area, they saw college teams in matching clothes, showcasing robots funded by big companies. As they watched their creation disappear under the water, they felt very disappointed. For a moment, it seemed like all their hard work was in vain. But instead of giving up, Juan encouraged the group, “We can fix this! We’ve come too far to let one setback stop us.” Motivated by their shared passion, they quickly came up with ideas. They remembered an old fishing net that Luis’s uncle used, which could help make their design stronger. With limited time, the boys hurried to make the needed changes, determined to try again. This time, their robot performed very well. It glided through the water, skillfully avoiding obstacles, and cheers erupted from the crowd. The boys shared proud looks, and their earlier worries disappeared. They felt relieved as they remembered why they started this journey together. At the end of the competition, they received an unexpected award for “Most Creative Design,” showing their cleverness despite the challenges. In that moment, they realized that their true success was not just in winning a prize, but in their strong friendship and ability to overcome difficulties. This experience sparked a passion in each of them, inspiring dreams of future innovations in engineering and technology. null高二 (英语)试题 第 1页(共 14页) 说明: 1. 1. A. “That allowed us to compare 16-year-olds before the stress with different 16-year-olds assessed after 高二 (英语)试题 第 9页(共 14页) the stress,” said Ian Gotlib, a psychology professor at Stanford University. Dan Siegel, clinical professor of psychiatry at the UCLA School of Medicine, noted that many individuals experience post-traumatic(创伤后的 ) growth after a stressful experience. C. Favorable. D.
