Teachers first noticed Cameron Thompson’s talent for numbers when he was four years old and at pre-school. Throughout primary school, Cameron Thompson’s best subject was maths. Then, when he was eleven, he took a maths test prior to entering secondary school. The test was out of 140; Cameron scored 141. “I broke the system,” he recalls.
Since then, he has continued to progress quickly. He passed two GCSEs (maths and further maths) at the age of eleven and then got the highest grade in his maths A-level before the end of that same academic year. He is now fourteen years old and studying for a degree in maths, a remarkable achievement at his age.
But his academic achievements have not always been matched by social success. “I have the social ability of a talking potato,” he admits. In other words, he feels more at ease with numbers than among other teenagers.
Communication is not one of Cameron’s strong points and, apart from the problems this causes socially, it is now beginning to affect his marks in mathematics. This is because, at undergraduate level, he is expected to give reasons for his answers together with the answers themselves. Cameron’s difficulty is that he often doesn’t know how he has arrived at the answers, even though the answers are usually correct.
Cameron and his family have recently moved house and Cameron is expected to start at a new school. He regards it as a chance to make a fresh start and make some friends. But his mother, Alison, has a few worries concerning his lack of social skills. While she describes Cameron as “very sensitive”, she also accepts the fact that he is socially naive and often unaware of signals from other people.
The new school specializes in dealing with students who, like Cameron, are academically excellent but find it difficult to relate to other students. And indeed, on his first day, Cameron did make a new friend — a boy called Tim — mainly because of a shared dislike of Justin Bieber’s music.
Recently, a maths professor from Cambridge University has been looking at Cameron’s work. Professor Imre Leader thinks Cameron should slow down, stop taking maths exams, and wait until he is eighteen before doing a degree. “There’s quite an important distinction,” he explains, “between taking lots of exams as fast as you can, and relaxing and enjoying the level that you are at — what we call enrichment.” Professor Leader believes Cameron will do better in the long run if he stops trying to progress so quickly. And although Cameron does want to finish his current degree, he isn’t making any academic plans beyond that. He goes to a weekly karate class and a computer games convention with some friends after school.
Since turning fourteen, Cameron’s feelings towards girls have changed. As he puts it, “I started to like them instead of being disgusted by them.” He’s even been on a first date — without his parents. And in general, he feels less isolated and unusual than he did before. “There are other people like me — high maths abilities, bad school lives — I’m not alone. Spooky.”
29. Between the ages of four and ten, Cameron ________.
A. showed outstanding ability in maths
B. noticed a loss of ambition academically
C. did better than other students at various school subjects
D. didn’t really fulfill his promise at maths
30. Cameron’s problems with communication ________.
A. are getting worse recently
B. haven’t affected his popularity at school
C. are irrelevant to nus maths grades
D. have been affecting his maths ability
31. Cameron met a boy at his new school who ________.
A has something in common with him
B. is even better at maths
C. has even more severe problems with communication
D. took a strong dislike to him from the first day
32. Professor Leader thinks Cameron should ________.
A. continue with his degree
B. have a temporary break from his degree
C. give up maths completely for a few years
D. try to speed up his progress
【答案】29. A 30. D 31. A 32. B

Green-space facilities are contributing to an important extent to the quality of the urban environment. Fortunately it is no longer necessary that every lecture or every book about this subject has to start with the proof of this idea. At present it is generally accepted, although more a commonly known statement than on the base of a closely-reasoned scientific proof. The recognition of the importance of green-spaces in the urban environment is a first step on the right way. This does not mean, however, that sufficient details are known about the functions of green-space in towns and about the way in which the inhabitants are using theses spaces. As to this rather complex subject, I shall, within the scope of this lecture, enter into one aspect only, namely the recreative function of green space facilities.
The theoretical separation of living, working, traffic and recreation (娱乐) which for many years has been used in town-and-country planning, has in my opinion resulted in disproportional (不相称的) attention for forms of recreation far from home, whereas there was relatively little attention for improvement of recreative possibilities in the direct neighborhood of the home. We have come to the conclusion that this is not right, because an important part of the time which we do not pass in sleeping or working, is used for activities at and around home. So it is obvious that recreation in the open air has to begin at the street-door of the house. The urban environment has to offer as many recreation activities as possible, and the design of these has to be such that more obligatory activities can also have a recreative aspect.
The very best standard of living is nothing if it is not possible to take a pleasant walk in the district, if the children cannot be allowed to play in the streets, because the risks of traffic are too great, if during shopping you can nowhere find a spot for enjoying for a moment the nice weather, in short, if you only feel yourself at home after the street-door of your house is closed after you.
33. According to the author, the importance of green-space in the urban environment ________.
A. is still unknown B. is usually neglected
C. is being closely studied D. has been generally recognized
34. The author suggests that the recreative possibilities of green-space should be provided ________.
A. in special areas B. in the suburbs
C. outside the doorway D. near gardens and parks
35. According to the author, green-space facilities should be designed in such a way that________.
A. more obligatory activities might take on a recreative aspect
B. more and more people might spend money on them
C. the number of activity designers might be increased
D. recreative activities might be brought into our homes
36. What is the main idea of the text?
A. Better use of green-space facilities should be made so as to improve the quality of our life.
B. The urban environment is providing more recreative activities than it did many years ago.
C. Attention must be directed to the improvement of recreative possibilities.
D. Importance must be attached to the development of obligatory activities.
【答案】33. D 34. C 35. A 36. A

For the rare few born with an insensitivity to pain, their lack of suffering is more than outweighed by the constant danger of injury, simply because they don’t have the pain-sharpened sense to keep out of harm’s way. Pain has an important survival advantage, but only when pain is sending us signals that require action - and these signals can go wrong.
Phantom limb (幻肢) pain is very well documented. This is when patients feel pain in amputated limbs (断肢), as their cut-off nerve endings continue to send pain signals to their brains. Today, doctors have great success treating amputees with phantom pain by combining pain relief medication with more advanced treatments, like electrical stimulation (刺激) of the brain and nerve systems. Together this process retrains the nervous systems to stop sending unnecessary signals. Could something similar be offered to able-bodied people suffering chronic (长期的) pain? It is obviously not useful for an amputated limb to hurt, but what if your bad back or knee is sending pain signals for an injury that no longer exists? Pain often starts with an injury, like a broken bone. But in many cases it continues long after the injured part has healed. This means a lot of us could be suffering from a form of phantom pain. And when pain is no longer useful, it is just, well, a pain.
Pain is defined as chronic when it stays once the usual process of healing has finished, generally after around three months. Why some people go on to develop chronic pain while others don’t is the biggest question troubling pain specialists.
The size of the problem is staggering, with studies saying that around a third of people will experience chronic pain at some stage in their lives. So while pain may be caused by injury or illness at first, chronic pain is now recognised as a condition in its own right, causing a great deal of lost productivity and human suffering.
It has long been known that we experience pain subjectively - two people can suffer the same injury and report very different levels of pain. But less well explored is the fact that one person can report very different levels of pain from one day to the next, or even one minute to the next. The fact that someone’s back may hurt one minute and not hurt the next tells us something important about pain. If it was simply reporting an injury, the pain would be more consistent (一致). But pain can be traced to a mix of biological, psychological and social factors. Put simply, pain is felt very differently according to what else is going on in a person’s life. You may have knee pain, for example, but if you are also experiencing emotional difficulty and social isolation, this is likely to have an amplifying (放大) effect on the pain levels that you feel. Armed with this knowledge, it is possible to start approaching pain with a different mindset.
37. What causes phantom limb pain?

C. Lack of pain-sharpened sense. D. Wrong signals from nerve endings.
38. What does the underlined word “staggering” in paragraph 4 mean?

39. Why does the author mention knee pain in the last paragraph?

40. What will the text most probably talk about next?

Some of the families that escaped apparently went on to thrive in their new communities. ___43___ There, they founded a temple to the Egyptian God Serapis.

【42题详解】

These cities are primarily in the general area of Pompeii.(在过去的十年里,我的考古实地工作在12个城市发现了200多名幸存者的证据。这些城市主要在庞贝的一般地区)”可知,作者在庞贝的一般地区发现了200多名幸存者生活过的证据。再根据空后“They preferred to settle with other survivors, and they relied on social and economic networks from their original cities as they resettled.(他们更喜欢与其他幸存者一起定居,并依赖原来城市的社会和经济网络)”可推测,这些幸存者可能并没有远离庞贝城。选项D“It seems as though most survivors stayed as close as they could to Pompeii.(似乎大多数幸存者都尽可能地靠近庞贝城定居)”符合语境,它进一步解释了这些幸存者的定居偏好。故选D。
【43题详解】
根据空前内容“Some of the families that escaped apparently went on to thrive in their new communities.(一些逃脱的家庭显然在他们的新社区中继续茁壮成长)”可知,一些脱困的家庭在新社区中繁荣发展。 F“The Caltilius family resettled in Ostia, a major port city 30 kilometres from Rome.( Caltilius家族定居在距离罗马30公里的奥斯提亚,这是一个主要港口城市)”符合语境,它提供了一个具体的例子,说明有些家庭在新社区中不仅生存下来,还进行了宗教建设。故选F。
【44题详解】
上文提到一些家庭在新社区发展的不错。而空后“Some had already been poor to begin with. Others seemed to have lost their family wealth, perhaps in the eruption itself.(有些人一开始就很穷。其他人似乎失去了他们的家庭财富,也许是在火山爆发本身)”则讲述有些人还是很穷。选项E“Not all survivors were rich or went on to find success in their new communities.(并非所有幸存者都富有或在新社区取得成功)”符合语境,它起到了承上启下的作用,从之前对成功家庭的描述转向了对经济状况较差家庭的讨论。故选E。
【45题详解】
根据空前内容“The Masuri family from Pompeii survived and settled in a small, poorer community called Nuceria. They took in a boy named Avianius Felicio as a foster son (养子). It’s likely that Felicio didn’t have any surviving family members.( Masuri家族幸存下来,并定居在一个名为Nuceria的小而贫穷的社区。他们收养了一个名叫Avianius Felicio的男孩作为养子。Felicio很可能没有任何在世的家庭成员)”可知,上文提到了来自庞贝的Masuri家族幸存下来,并在一个较小、较贫穷的社区定居,还收养了一个养子。空后“They didn’t just take care of each other; they also donated to the religious and civic organizations of their new homes(他们不仅互相照顾;他们还向宗教和民间组织捐赠了他们的新家)”提到他们不仅互相关心,还向新家的宗教和民间组织捐款。由此可推测,空白处应该填入一个进一步说明这个家庭在新社区中行为的句子。选项C“This example shows how generous migrants were towards other survivors.(这个例子说明了移民对其他幸存者的慷慨)” 符合语境,它总结了Masuri家族的行为,并与后文的内容相衔接,强调了幸存者对彼此的慷慨和支持。故选C。

【答案】
Dear Ms Zhang,
As you know, we recently had an argument about the amount of homework assigned each week. I feel that the workload is overwhelming and affects my ability to focus on other subjects.
I think we can solve the problem together by discussing a balanced homework schedule that allows for adequate learning without causing stress. Too much homework makes me tired and less interested in the subject. However, if we have a balanced homework schedule, I can make full use of the free time to review what I have learned and find out what I can't understand to ask teachers. What is more, we students can get a variety of outdoor activities to keep us healthy.
I hope that we can meet to talk about this and find a solution that works for both of us.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua

A. has something in common with him
B. is even better at maths
C. has even more severe problems with communication
D. took a strong dislike to him from the first day
32. Professor Leader thinks Cameron should ________.
A. continue with his degree
B. have a temporary break from his degree
C. give up maths completely for a few years
D. try to speed up his progress
C
The very best standard of living is nothing if it is not possible to take a pleasant walk in the district if the children cannot be allowed to play in the streets, because the risks of traffic are too great, if during shopping you can nowhere find a spot for enjoying for a moment the nice weather, in short, if you only feel yourself at home after the street-door of your house is closed after you.
D
37 What causes phantom limb pain?
A. Insensitivity of the body. B. Possible danger of injury.
C. Lack of pain-sharpened sense. D. Wrong signals from nerve endings.
38. What does the underlined word “staggering” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Reasonable. B. Predictable. C. Decreasing. D. Shocking.
39. Why does the author mention knee pain in the last paragraph?
A. To provide a treatment for knee pain. B. To show the consistency feature of pain.
C. To explain the subjectivity of pain levels. D. To compare it with other types of injuries.
40. What will the text most probably talk about next?
A. A different study of phantom pain. B. A new approach to phantom pain.
C. A strange phantom pain patient. D. Another cause of phantom pain.

On August 24,79 AD, Mount Vesuvius erupted, burying the ancient cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum. According to most modern accounts, the story pretty much ends there: both cities were wiped out, their people frozen in time. ___41___ The story of the eruption of Mount Vesuvius is no longer one about destruction alone; it also includes the stories of those who survived the eruption and went on to rebuild their lives.
My archaeological fieldwork in the past decade has found evidence of over 200 survivors in 12 cities. These cities are primarily in the general area of Pompeii. ___42___ They preferred to settle with other survivors, and they relied on social and economic networks from their original cities as they resettled.
Some of the families that escaped apparently went on to thrive in their new communities. ___43___ There, they founded a temple to the Egyptian God Serapis.
___44___ Some had already been poor to begin with. Others seemed to have lost their family wealth, perhaps in the eruption itself. The Masuri family from Pompeii survived and settled in a small, poorer community called Nuceria. They took in a boy named Avianius Felicio as a foster son (养子). It’s likely that Felicio didn’t have any surviving family members. ___45___ They didn’t just take care of each other; they also donated to the religious and civic organizations of their new homes.
