Dispose of Your Credit Card Without Burying It
Disposing of unwanted items in our lives often means simply throwing them into the garbage or recycling bin — or, if they’re still useful, giving them away. It’s different with old credit cards, which should be destroyed so nobody can use them fraudulently (欺诈地). 1 Here’s how to get rid of an old card.
First, contact the issuer
If closing the account is your goal, you’ll have to call the number on the back of your card and ask to do so. If your card is a rewards card, remember to first redeem points or cash back. Change any automatic payments to a different card, and be sure to pay the final card bill.
Cut up plastic cards
Sharp scissors and smart trimming will do the job here. “We recommend that consumers cut through the EMV chip, then further cut the card a few times along the short side, and dispose of the sections in more than one trash bag,” says Sarah Grano, a spokeswoman for the American Bankers Association. 2
Send back metal cards
3 Contact your issuer. Typically, you can mail it back for disposal. “For example, when American Express sends a replacement card, it also sends an addressed return envelope to mail back an old metal card for destruction,” says Heather Norton, spokeswoman for American Express.
Check back on your account
Don’t obsess about identity theft of an old credit card. You generally won’t be responsible for fraudulent charges anyway. 4 It’s a good idea to check your account statement to make sure there’s been no fraud.
Closing an account can hurt you
Closing a credit card account can lower your credit rating. That’s because credit scores consider your “credit utilization ratio’”, or how much of your available credit you’re using. And when you close an account, you have less available credit. 5 Closing an old card decreases the average age of your accounts.
A.It could be worth closing the account anyway.
B.Scores also consider the length of time you’ve had the card open.
C.Or feed cards into a machine designed to handle them.
D.Take care with debit cards and other plastic where fraud means you might be missing money.
E.But how to destroy a payment card properly is not obvious, especially with new metal credit cards.
F.Destroying a metal card by yourself is harder and potentially dangerous.
G.Skip this step if you’re simply replacing an expired card or one that has been compromised.
1.根据空前“It’s different with old credit cards, which should be destroyed so nobody can use them fraudulently (欺诈地).(旧信用卡则不同,旧信用卡应该销毁,这样就没有人可以欺诈性地使用它们。)” E“But how to destroy a payment card properly is not obvious, especially with new metal credit cards.(但是如何妥善销毁支付卡并不明显,特别是对于新的金属信用卡。)” 同时引出下文“Here’s how to get rid of an old card. (以下是如何处理旧卡的方法。)”如何处理旧的信用卡。故选E。
2.根据上文内容“Sharp scissors and smart trimming will do the job here. “We recommend that consumers cut through the EMV chip, then further cut the card a few times along the short side, and dispose of the sections in more than one trash bag,” says Sarah Grano, a spokeswoman for the American Bankers Association.(锋利的剪刀和灵巧的修剪就可以了。美国银行家协会发言人Sarah Grano说:“我们建议消费者先切开EMV芯片,然后沿着短的一面再切几次,把这些部分扔进不止一个垃圾袋里。”)”可知,空前主要是介绍了如何用剪刀剪旧的信用卡。选项C“Or feed cards into a machine designed to handle them.(或将卡片送入专门处理卡片的机器。)”
Typically, you can mail it back for disposal. “For example, when American Express sends a replacement card, it also sends an addressed return envelope to mail back an old metal card for destruction,” says Heather Norton, spokeswoman for American Express.(联系发行机构。一般来说,你可以把它寄回去处理。美国运通发言人Heather Norton表示:“例如,当美国运通(American Express)发送一张新卡时,它还会发送一个写有地址的回邮信封,将旧金属卡邮寄回去销毁。”)”可知,下文主要讲述的是可以将信用卡寄回发行机构进行摧毁。选项F“Destroying a metal card by yourself is harder and potentially dangerous.(自己破坏金属卡比较困难,而且有潜在的危险。)”
4.根据空后内容“It’s a good idea to check your account statement to make sure there’s been no fraud.(检查你的账户对账单以确保没有欺诈行为是个好主意。)” D“Take care with debit cards and other plastic where fraud means you might be missing money.(小心使用借记卡和其他信用卡,因为欺诈意味着你可能会丢失钱。)”
5.根据空后内容“Closing an old card decreases the average age of your accounts.(关闭一张旧卡会减少你账户的平均年龄。)” B“Scores also consider the length of time you’ve had the card open(信用评分还会考虑你开户的时间长短。)”

(23-24高二上·浙江台州·期末)Unique among all the positive emotions, hope requires some degree of conflict, difficulty, negativity, or uncertainty to be ignited. People high in hope are optimistic about their future and believe in possibilities. They see challenges as opportunities to grow and learn, rather than as obstacles. 11 Here are tips on how to cultivate hope.
Set and achieve goals. Without a clear goal, it’s easy to get distracted and lose focus. Hopeful people usually visualize their goals and create conditions that set them up for success. 12 Getting three emails out in the next 15minutes or preparing lunch in the next 20 minutes are simple examples.
Stick with positive people. 13 This doesn’t mean being intolerant of another person’s difficulties, negativity, or struggles, but it does mean that hopeful people tend to spend more time associating with those who share a bright and proactive attitude. They maintain a healthy balance but don’t get overwhelmed by the negativity around them.
14 While believing in oneself is important, highly hopeful people are able to forgive themselves as well. This is a unique combination because this type of confidence allows a person to be imperfect. In addition, they are willing to take reasonable risks and accept failures to support their growth and move forward.
Keep a positive outlook. No matter what life throws at them, they endeavor to see the silver lining. They don’t let the circumstance define their emotional response. In addition, high-hope people are also creative problem-solvers. When faced with a challenge, they don’t give up easily. 15
A.Believe in the power of risks.
B.Be self-reflective and confident.
C.This is key to the success of many high-hope people.
D.One way this gets done is through achievable micro-goals.
E.Being around positive people contributes to keeping optimistic.
F.Therefore, they’re constantly trying to improve themselves and their skill sets.
G.Instead, they work out solutions that help them overcome the obstacles in their way.

14.根据后文“While believing in oneself is important, highly hopeful people are able to forgive themselves as well. (23-24高二上·浙江温州·期末)Many people doubt about the effectiveness of body language. The negative view towards body language is often due to myths(谬论). 16
Myth 1: Faking body language is not OK.
Faking is part of human’s way of life and people seem to be always fascinated with any method that allows them to fake when they need it. Is that wrong? The truth is there is no harm in trying. The aim with body language is to improve the overall quality of the communication and allow you to get what you want. As selfish as this may sound, this is what everybody is after. 17 If you find that a particular technique works for you, go ahead and use it.
Myth 2: You can spot a lie through body language.
Over the years there have been many claims that certain non-verbal signals show that a person is lying. These gestures and non-verbal signals are now well-known, such as touching the nose and covering the mouth. However, some researchers have found that these signals don’t directly show that someone is lying. 18 Pressure doesn’t necessarily mean that the person is lying; it is only a signal among others.
Myth 3: 19
For a long time, presentation coaches on body language seem to have been advising people that holding their hands behind them is a sign of power. 20 Therefore, putting hands behind you with an intention to show off your power is a myth. Generally, when hands are hidden from view, people don’t trust you because they cannot see what you are doing or holding.
A.There is no point in denying it.
B.Body language is specific to culture.
C.All they show is that someone is stressed.
D.Research shows that most people find it wrong.
E.Putting your hands behind your back shows power.

What Are the Best Rules You’ve Had with Your Roommates?
Living with other people can be difficult, especially when each person comes from a different background and has their own ideas about how they want to live. However, maintaining a warm and friendly relationship with roommates is essential for both personal growth and academic success.
31
●Make a financial agreement. It is a good idea to get a financial agreement in writing to avoid any issues down the road. 32 Make sure you’re okay with paying half of the bills if your roommates constantly leave the taps on.
● 33 Music, TV, or any other noises should be kept at a low decibel level. Along with study habits, you should discuss how to manage phone conversations and visitors in the room.
●Clean and maintain the house responsibly. We don’t need a dish washing or toilet cleaning schedule clipped on the fridge as long as we behave responsibly.
●Decide what you will share. Make a clear delineation between your stuff and your roommate’s stuff. Decide what contents in the fridge are okay to share and which are off limits. 34

B.Here are some of the golden rules that help maintain agreeable living conditions.

The Friend Trip: Fun Without Conflicts
Anyone who said a friend is a friend forever has clearly never experienced a group trip where you will get into trouble arguing over plans and restaurant bills. 36 Here are some ways to do it without anyone getting unfriended.
Invite with care
“You cannot travel with everybody. All your friends are not travel friends,” says Irvin on her popular TikTok account. She suggests picking travel partners who share similar interests, and deciding ahead of time what kind of trip you will be taking—relaxation, partying or adventure.
Brainstorm as a group
37 Some people prefer to use familiar spreadsheet such as Microsoft Excel to organise the plan and share it with friends. And creating an Airbnb wish list lets friends suggest accommodation options for the whole group to see.
Exchange the captain’s hat
Use a classic teacher’s trick to keep everyone engaged and share the planning burden: schedule a group leader to take ownership of each day’s activities. 38 By making everyone the driver, everyone also gets the chance at some point to sit back and be a passenger.
39
Tracking expenses for a whole group can expose a lot of pain points. “I have seen so many friendships break down because dissatisfaction builds when one person suspects other friends are taking advantage of her financially or not pulling their weight,” says friendship coach Jackson. 40 Jackson says he liked Splitwise to help groups manage everyone’s bills, so there’s no confusion about who owes what.
A.Prepare cash in advance
B.Automate the money flow
C.Travelling with your best friends can be a tough job.
D.There are countless situations where the group need to design travel routes.
E.Apps can help make complex calculations easy even while the trip is still underway.
F.Ask your friends where they want to go and what they want to do using Google Forms.
G.This person will be responsible for making that day’s tour plan or keeping everyone on schedule.

(23-24高二上·浙江杭州·期末)In a world where technology is king, hardly does a day go by without the launch of some “world-changing” product in the field of alternate reality. 41 . These include VR, AR, MR, XR and the list goes on.
Many people confuse augmented reality (AR) with virtual reality (VR) and understandably so. Both AR and VR offer alternate or altered reality experiences and as a result, it is easy for users to be attracted and wonder what is real and what is not. 42 . Both aim to provide an enhanced or enriched experience to users, most commonly used in the gaming scene, but also increasingly used in other areas.
However, AR and VR can be quite different in many ways. The main difference lies in the mode of delivery. Simply put, VR “transports” the user to another world, by “replacing” the real world with a virtual substitute most commonly done through helmets or goggles to completely immerse the gamer in a different reality. 43
AR, however, does not change the entire landscape of what users see. 44 . While AR may be less immersive than VR, the success of games which use AR is proof that it can be just as or even more entertaining than VR games. Moreover, since AR does not require the use of goggles or helmets, it is more accessible.
VR and AR are both powerful technologies which are still relatively new to many consumers. 45 . They can completely change how we use our electronic devices in the future, but whether one will edge out the other is anyone’s guess.
A.VR can be interactive or non-interactive.
B.In fact, it adds to reality with digital images.
C.In short, at the heart of VR and AR are two very similar technologies.
D.However, they have already begun to shake things up in the gaming world.
E.It is also getting increasingly difficult to keep up with the “R”s that have come into existence.
F.For example, it can make users feel as if they are falling, thereby igniting fear.
G.They would see computer made images as an overlay to what they see in real life.
41.根据上文“In a world where technology is king, hardly does a day go by without the launch of some “world-changing” product in the field of alternate reality.”(在一个技术为王的世界里,几乎每天都有一些“改变世界”的产品在虚拟现实领域发布。)根据下文“These include VR, AR, MR, XR and the list goes on.”(这些包括VR, AR, MR, XR等等)可知,选项承接上文说明跟上科技进步很困难,因为新科技产品不断在出现,并引出下文对一些“R”的列举。

43.根据上文“Simply put, VR “transports” the user to another world, by “replacing” the real world with a virtual substitute most commonly done through helmets or goggles to completely immerse the gamer in a different reality.”(简而言之,VR将用户“传送”到另一个世界,用虚拟的替代品“取代”现实世界,最常见的是通过头盔或护目镜,让玩家完全沉浸在不同的现实中。)
44.根据上文“AR, however, does not change the entire landscape of what users see.”(然而,增强现实并没有改变用户看到的整个景观。)
45.根据上文“VR and AR are both powerful technologies which are still relatively new to many consumers.”(VR和AR都是强大的技术,对许多消费者来说仍然相对较新)和下文“They can completely change how we use our electronic devices in the future, but whether one will edge out the other is anyone’s guess.”(它们可以完全改变我们未来使用电子设备的方式,但其中一种是否会取代另一种还不得而知)可知,选项与上文为转折关关系,说明VR和AR的影响。

(23-24高二上·浙江嘉兴·期末)As humans, we’re meant to be social creatures. In fact, being socially connected is key to our mental and emotional health. 46 This can cause us to cut ourselves off from others and gradually become lonely. Social situations can seem frightening, but the truth is never quite so black-and-white.
People aren’t thinking about you—at least not to the degree that you think. 47 Just like you’re thinking about yourself, other people are thinking about themselves. They’re not spending their free time judging you, so stop wasting time worrying about what others think of you.
48 When you’re socially anxious, it can seem as though everyone else is fully confident. But that’s not the case. There are still many shy people out there struggling with the same self-doubts as you are. The next person you speak to is just as likely to be worried about what you think of them!
You don’t have to be perfect to be liked. In fact, our imperfections can be pleasant. 49 If you can cheerfully accept your awkwardness and imperfections, you’ll likely find that others will, too. They may even like you better for it!
It’s okay to make mistakes. Everyone makes mistakes; it’s part of being human. 50 Your value doesn’t come from being perfect. If you find self-forgiveness difficult, try to look at your own mistakes as you would those of a friend.
Overcoming social fear requires practice. Don’t expect to become socially comfortable without putting in the time. That said, you can start small. Take baby steps towards being more confident and social, and then build on those successes.
A.So give yourself a break when you mess up.
B.Most people are caught up in their own lives.
C.The good news is that you can learn from them.
D.People are much more confident than you think.
E.Even our weaknesses can bring us closer to others.

(23-24高二上·浙江舟山·期末)How to write a Cover Letter (求职信)
Are you tired of your job and in the market for a new one? Many people are these days, and that can be a problem for job hunters. 51 A well-designed cover letter is the answer.
The cover letter should be no more than one page in length. And it should explain why you are the best candidate for a job. The point of this letter is to help you stand out from the others. 52 .
Making a good impression in your cover letter means grabbing the reader’s attention right away. In your first paragraph, quickly introduce yourself and talk about the position you are applying for. 53 This illustrates to employers that you can do your research——a key part of cover letters.
54 Each one should be tailored to the job you are applying for. So, before you start writing, find out some information about the job and the establishment. Then you’ll know what the company values and which skills and experiences your letter should focus on.
Following the opening paragraph, you can discuss the relevant experiences in your resume (简历). 55 Talking about your background and skills shouldn’t take more than a couple of paragraphs. From there, you can move to the closing of your letter.
It’s important to end on a strong note. In these last lines, you should repeat why you are a great fit. Then follow up with a polite request for an interview. This shows you are excited about the job and keen to it.
A.Someone would refer to their education experiences in this part.
B.A fine means is to tell why you fit the job and have a strong ending.
C.One of the best ways to do that is by making a good first impression.
D.You should show why you are interested in the job and the company.
E.No matter how many you write, every cover letter should be different.
F.How can you get the attention of employers with so much competition?
G.You can give in-depth details about why your skills fit the company’s needs.

承接上文,和上文是平行关系,建议要说明自己的技能适合所申请的公司,引出下文“Talking about your background and skills shouldn’t take more than a couple of paragraphs. (23-24高二上·浙江金华·期末)While many people might be quitting formal New Year’s decisions this year, others may mark a fresh start by deciding to make up for poor eating habits of the past. 56 Without a solid plan, you may fail quickly. So consider starting with these three easy ways to eat a healthier diet.
Aim for real food only. 57 Maybe it’s the whole thing (like a frozen dinner), or maybe it’s just part of your meal (like the bottled dressing on your salad). Think of where you can replace processed foods for healthier ones. For example, eat whole-grain pasta instead of enriched white-flour spaghetti.
Schedule your meals and snacks. Set times on your phone for three different meals and two snacks (if you need them). 58 This might control your desires, reduce stress about when you’ll eat next, and cut down on the extra calories of unnecessary snacking ——a real challenge if you’re close to a refrigerator all day while at home or work.
Reduce your portion (份量) sizes. If you’re like most Americans, you’re eating too much food. An easy way to carry out portion control: load your plate as you normally would, then put back a third or half of the food. 59
You don’t need to include all of these steps at one time; try one step per week. Write down what you’re eating and any thoughts or questions you have about the process. 60 Before long, you’ll have the confidence to attempt new steps.
A.Avoid having late-night meals or snacks.
B.Don’t eat in between these scheduled times.
C.Processed foods are linked with many diseases.
D.After a week, assess what worked and what didn’t.
E.You can also use a salad plate instead of a dinner plate.
F.Look at your plate and note what’s processed and what isn’t.
G.But this motivation is often focused on a diet that is too ambitious.
56.由上文“While many people might be quitting formal New Year’s decisions this year, others may mark a fresh start by deciding to make up for poor eating habits of the past. (虽然今年许多人可能会放弃正式的新年决定,但其他人可能会决定弥补过去不良的饮食习惯,从而标志着一个新的开始。)”可知,本空与上文为转折关系,说明动机的集中点是什么,故G选项“But this motivation is often focused on a diet that is too ambitious. (但这种动机往往集中在过于雄心勃勃的饮食上。)”能承接上文,符合题意。故选G。
57.由下文“Maybe it’s the whole thing (like a frozen dinner), or maybe it’s just part of your meal (like the bottled dressing on your salad). Think of where you can replace processed foods for healthier ones. For example, eat whole-grain pasta instead of enriched white-flour spaghetti. (它可能是整个食物(比如冷冻晚餐),也可能只是你食物的一部分(比如沙拉上的瓶装调料)。想想你可以在哪里用更健康的食物代替加工食品。例如,吃全麦意大利面,而不是富含白面粉的意大利面。)”可知,本空要说跟“加工食品”有关的话题,故F选项“Look at your plate and note what’s processed and what isn’t. (看看你的盘子,记下哪些经过加工,哪些没有经过加工。)”能引起下文,符合题意。故选F。
58.由上文“Schedule your meals and snacks. Set times on your phone for three different meals and two snacks (if you need them). (安排好你的正餐和零食。在手机上设定三顿不同的正餐和两顿零食的时间(如果你需要的话)。)”可知,本空要说跟“吃东西的时间”有关的话题,故B选项“Don’t eat in between these scheduled times. (不要在这两个预定时间之间吃东西。)”能承接上文,符合题意。故选B。
59.由上文“Reduce your portion (份量) sizes. If you’re like most Americans, you’re eating too much food. An easy way to carry out portion control: load your plate as you normally would, then put back a third or half of the food. (减少食物的份量。如果你像大多数美国人一样,你吃得太多了。一个简单的控制分量的方法是:像平常一样装满你的盘子,然后放回三分之一或一半的食物。)”可知,本空要说跟“份量和盘子”有关的话题,故E选项“You can also use a salad plate instead of a dinner plate. (你也可以用沙拉盘代替餐盘。)”能承接上文,符合题意。故选E。
60.由上文“You don’t need to include all of these steps at one time; try one step per week. Write down what you’re eating and any thoughts or questions you have about the process. (23-24高二上·浙江宁波·期末)There’s nothing more frustrating than a parent saying “no” to something you really want, whether it’s a dog, or a new phone. 61 However, there are a lot of simple things you can do to help you convince your parents to give you what you want!
Pick the right time to approach the subject. Usually, family dinner time is a safe bet. It is not a good idea to ask for something when either parent seems stressed, distracted, or tired. 62 Especially not if they’re upset at you.
Maintain a calm tone during the talk. Asking for something can be an emotional experience: you might feel passionate about the thing you’re asking for, and you might feel angry or frustrated if your parents say no. 63 Studies show negotiation is more successful if it’s done peacefully and rationally.
Be patient and give them time to think about it. 64 Tell them to get back to you in a couple hours or days with any questions or concerns they have. Let them know that you want to discuss this as mature, responsible adults and you are willing to work through any potential issues. Say it like that, and you’ll be sure to impress them with how well-rounded and balanced your argument is.
65 Before you go to your parents to ask for that new puppy, make sure you know exactly what adopting a pet requires. Having a good understanding of what you’ll be asking your parents about will help you present your case successfully; by knowing your topic inside and out, you’ll have confident answers for their (many, many) questions.
A.Understand your parents’ current feelings about your requirement.
B.Do background research on the thing you want.
C.You’d better never force them to give you an answer right away.
D.You should try to keep your head all the way.
E.You won’t always be able to persuade your parents to see things your way.
F.It’s good to discuss with your parents about what you need at that time.
G.Don’t bring it up when they’re not in a good mood.

63.根据本段主题句“Maintain a calm tone during the talk.(在谈话中保持冷静的语气)”以及下文“Studies show negotiation is more successful if it’s done peacefully and rationally.(研究表明,和平理性的谈判更容易成功)”可知,本段是说要保持冷静,D项“你应该一直保持头脑清醒”符合语境,故选D。
64.根据本段主题句“Be patient and give them time to think about it.(要有耐心,给他们时间去思考)”以及下文“Tell them to get back to you in a couple hours or days with any questions or concerns they have.(告诉他们如果有任何问题或担心,几个小时或几天后再来找你)”可知,本段是说要给父母时间思考,C项“你最好不要强迫他们马上给你答复”与本段语义一致,故选C。
65.根据下文“Before you go to your parents to ask for that new puppy, make sure you know exactly what adopting a pet requires.(在你去找父母要一只新的小狗之前,确保你确切地知道收养宠物需要什么)”可知,本段是说在向父母提要求前做好背景调查,B项“对你想要的东西做背景调查”适合作为主题句,故选B。

Ethan Mollick, a professor at the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School, recommends using A.I. to overcome writer’s block, or get a running start on hard projects.
68
I’ve also been using ChatGPT and other A.I. apps as a kind of rehearsal for offline tasks I find unpleasant or hard.
When I had to have a difficult conversation with a friend, I asked ChatGPT to take part in a role-playing exercise. “Pretend you’re my friend, and react the way you think my friend might react,” I told it. 69 It didn’t make the real one painless, but I felt more confident knowing I’d already practised with a chatbot.
Of course, A.I. chatbots can’t replace human friendships. But they can be a kind of on-demand sounding board, offering us basic feedback and advice without judgement.
Sparking Notes for everything
70 I’ve used A.I. programs to “read” long articles for me, and summarize dense academic papers. Usually they get the key points right, even if some of the details are missing. If you’re bored of reading this article, you could ask ChatGPT to summarize it for you. I promise I won’t be offended.
A.Rehearsing for real-world tasks.
B.I then held a mock version of the conversation.
C.Explaining concepts at multiple difficulty levels.
D.Of the questions it generated, most were pretty good.
E.Used properly, ChatGPT and other A.I. chatbots can be amazing teaching tools.
F.But I’ve also seen these A.I. programs do amazing things that took my breath away.
G.One of the most powerful abilities of A.I. language models is quickly summarizing large amounts of text.

(23-24高二上·浙江杭州·期末)Emotional energy is a relatively new term to describe our vitality (活力). 71 If we feel that some situations drain (耗尽) us, then it’s because they take away all our vitality in matters that are insignificant, but ones that do require effort. They’re situations that only distract us from what’s truly important, and from the things that enrich us. Let’s learn to identify them and avoid them.
Arguments about insignificant issues
A debate is a great opportunity to present your own points of view and learn from other’s opinions. However, something very different happens when two people get into a pointless argument. 72
Gossip
73 . This sort of curiosity is no more than a sign of a lack of identity. Whoever gossips about others looks for themselves in other people. The thing is, they just can’t find themselves.
Worrying over and over again
One of the situations that drain our emotional energy is unstoppable doubt. This is when we think and think but only come up with “ifs” and “buts”. We try to find the right answer or make the right decision just by reflection. 74
Need for approval
We’re constantly trying to get other people’s approval. 75 Instead of investing time to explore who we are, whether others like us or not, we just spend our time doing things that other people want us to do. Generally, people either accept you or they don’t, and sometimes for reasons that are completely beyond your control.
A.We spend so much time worrying about things that it blurs our vision of life.
B.The only purpose of it is to “beat the other person”, and express their own points of view.
C.By doing this we’re just cheating ourselves.
D.Vitality is the strength that we have before tiredness sets in.
E.We go on and on about the same problem, without actually doing anything to solve it.
F.Sticking our noses into other’s private lives, instead of our own, drains our emotional energy.
G.However, we forget that many answers come only when we combine thought and action.
72.上文“A debate is a great opportunity to present your own points of view and learn from other’s opinions. However, something very different happens when two people get into a pointless argument.(辩论是一个很好的机会来展示自己的观点,并从别人的观点中学习。
Sticking our noses into other’s private lives与标题Gossip照应。故选F。
75.空前“We’re constantly trying to get other people’s approval.(我们总是试图得到别人的认可)”表示试图得到别人的认可是我们一直在做的事情,C选项“这样做,我们只是在欺骗自己”指出这样做的问题,句中的this指代上文中to get other people’s approval,且下文“Generally, people either accept you or they don’t, and sometimes for reasons that are completely beyond your control.(一般来说,人们要么接受你,要么不接受你,有时是因为你完全无法控制的原因)”对C项做出解释,说明别人的认可是无法掌控的,因此,这种做法是自欺欺人。

F.The question is whether it is possible to fake body language.
G.The following is a list of popular myths and misconceptions.

(23-24高二上·浙江宁波·期末)Younger generations of Chinese citizens have developed new methods to relieve stress, which include raising unconventional “pets”, hugging trees, watching stress relief videos and so on.
On social media platforms, a new toy called “mango dog” recently emerged. 21 In the eyes of some netizens, the “mango dog” has special meanings. “Every time I see it, it heals me,” “It’s fluffy (毛茸茸的) and cute.” 22 For example, college students have shared online their experiences of raising stones and paper box “dogs”. These “pets” share similar characteristics—they don’t cry, make noise or get sick.
Tree hugging has also become a new stress relief for young people. “You may think you are hugging the tree, but in fact, the tree is embracing you,” this is a feeling shared by a netizen. Many netizens with such experiences have expressed that their anxiety has been reduced, and they feel a sense of communication with nature. 23
“I came across the idea online. I tried it and felt truly relaxed,” said a young office worker. “In those brief seconds, it felt like the tree released a lot of pressure and stress from me.” 24 “I especially enjoy watching stress relief videos, like washing blankets and cutting soap. After watching them, I feel like the stress of the day is relieved and it’s easier to fall asleep.”
25 According to public data, there are currently more than 800 companies in China with names, business scopes, products, services or trademarks containing the term “stress relief”. In 2023 alone, more than 70 new registered companies with this focus were added.

Rules exist for a reason. The reason is to help people from different walks of life to harmoniously cohabit and call a house a home. Living with roommates is an experience of a life time. 35 Each person will leave a part of them with you behind—a laugh, a cry, a lesson, an experience.
A.If a problem comes up, it’s better to talk about it right away than to try to ignore it and let it get worse.
B.Here are some of the golden rules that help maintain agreeable living conditions.
C.You will have your best and your worst memories with roommates.
D.Rules are negotiable and compromise is a way of life.
E.Decide how you will divide up the rent and utility payments, and determine whether or not you will split the cable and Internet bill.
F.Remember to ask before “borrowing” anything and always take good care of any borrowed items.
G.Respect roommates’ privacy and personal space.

F.Many other people feel just as awkward and nervous as you do.
G.Yet many of us are shy and feel awkward around unfamiliar people.

(23-24高二上·浙江绍兴·期末)Some people say that A.I. large language models can be unpredictable and unreliable — giving false information and acting strangely toward users. I’ve been using A.I. tools like ChatGPT almost daily for several months now, and I’ve seen them spit out plenty of wrong answers. 66 Here are three things that A.I. is especially good at.
Getting creatively unstuck
A.I. can also be a good tool for getting your creative juices flowing. Recently, I was trying to come up with questions to ask a podcast guest. I pasted the guest’s bio into ChatGPT and asked it to give me “10 thoughtful, incisive interview questions” for this person. 67
