What do disabled travelers look for when choosing a city to visit?
In 2018, the value of the so-called “purple pound” (the spending power of disabled people) to UK tourism was estimated at £15.3 billion, while 27 million travelers with disabilities in the US took 81 million trips and spent about $58.7 billion (£45.8 billion) in that same year.
There was a survey about a city’s appeal to disabled travelers. Now, let’s find out what the respondents think of the top 3 cities - Singapore, Las Vegas and Sydney.
According to Nilesh Joshi, who has mobility challenges but doesn’t use a wheelchair, “Singapore allows me to independently move around using public transport.”
Overwhelmingly, however, the most important factor for survey respondents was not physical accessibility but being treated with understanding and respect. Joshi said, “Always smiling, welcoming and helpful, the people of Singapore make a big difference for the disabled to feel accepted and looked after.” Besides, one of Singapore’s major tourist attractions, Gardens by the Bay, is fully wheelchair -accessible.
According to prominent wheelchair blogger John Morris, who visits Las Vegas 3 or 4 times a year, “The city has one of the highest concentrations of accessible hotel rooms in the world.” Julie Jones, publisher of Travel Without Limits, the world’s only print magazine dedicated to accessible travel, praises Sydney’s accessibility. She said, “The majority of the public transport system is accessible to wheelchair users.”

Curry is not a single spice, nor is it related to the namesake curry tree. The catch-all umbrella term refers to a “spiced meat, fish or vegetable stew, either freshly prepared as a powder or spice paste or purchased as a ready-made mixture. If you’re a curry lover, follow your desires around the world by heading to these destinations.
India
It’s impossible to sum up India’s various “curries” in a few lines. But if there’s one dish that can be found on menus across the country, it’d be murgh makhani — better known around the world as butter chicken. This famous dish stars chicken soaked in yogurt, then covered with a rich creamy sauce of tomatoes, onions and spices.
Thailand
Often made with coconut milk, Thai curry dishes vary across the country. Generally speaking, you’ll see drier varieties up north and wetter variations in central Thailand and down south, where coconut milk is more common. Thai curries come in a stoplight of colors — red, yellow and green — and strive to strike a balance between sweet, sour, salty and spicy.
Japan
Typically mild and thick, Japanese curry, kare raise, is eaten across the country. Usually cooked with pre-made mixes, Japan’s thick and soft variation usually features pieces of stewed beef, onions and carrots over a bed of rice.
Malaysia
Nyonya cuisine — dishes created by the Straits Chinese community — plays an important role in Malaysia’ s cooking melting pot. One of the best known Nyonya curries is kari ayam (bone-in chicken curry) which features a mix of Chinese techniques and Malaysian ingredients. Another dish that deserves mentioning is kapitan, which sees pieces of chicken fried in curry paste, and then cooked at a low heat in coconut milk.
21.Which dish is made of beef?
A.Murgh makhani. B.Kapitan. C.Kari ayam. D.Kare raise.
22.What do Thai and Malaysia curry dishes have in common?
A.They contain coconut milk. B.They use only Chinese techniques.
C.They stress the importance of colors. D.They are cooked with Malaysian ingredients.
23.Where is the text most probably taken from?
A.A street poster. B.A food magazine.
C.A book review. D.A research paper.
【答案】21.D 22.A 23.B
根据“Japan”部分中“Typically mild and thick, Japanese curry, kare raise, is eaten across the country. Usually cooked with pre-made mixes, Japan’s thick and soft variation usually features pieces of stewed beef, onions and carrots over a bed of rice.(日本咖喱,俗称“kare raise”,味道温和,浓稠,全国各地都吃日本的这道菜通常是用预先做好的混合料烹制而成,通常是把炖牛肉、洋葱和胡萝卜片放在米饭上)”可知,Kare raise是由牛肉做的,故选D。
根据“Thailand”部分中“Often made with coconut milk, Thai curry dishes vary across the country.(泰国咖喱菜通常是用椰奶做的,在全国各地各不相同)”和“Malaysia”部分中“Another dish that deserves mentioning is kapitan, which sees pieces of chicken fried in curry paste, and then cooked at a low heat in coconut milk.(另一道值得一提的菜是kapitan,它是将鸡肉片放入咖喱酱中油炸,然后在椰奶中小火煮熟)”可知,泰国和马来西亚咖喱菜的共同点是它们都含椰奶,故选A。

Georgia, who works for a popular fashion store in the UK named Bows Boutique, left her purse at a gas station after her company party in early December. She was heartbroken, but thinking someone must have taken it away, she gave up the idea of going back to look for it and didn’t phone the station to ask about it. But her tears quickly dried when an off-duty firefighter named Nyma showed up at her door.
A ring camera caught Georgia and Nyma’s exchange, and the owner of Bows Boutique posted the video on the store’s Instagram page. In it, Nyma rings her doorbell and Georgia answers it using a phone app. Nyma explained where he found the lost purse and said he decided to drive straight to her house, so she wouldn’t have to experience an extra moment of panic.
Georgia was moved to tears and kept offering to send Nyma money for his good deed, but he refused. He simply asked her to pay it forward, and explained that it was no trouble for him though Georgia knew he needed to drive hours to her house. Because she wasn’t home at the time, he left the purse in an empty garbage bag and left.
The owner and Georgia were so touched by the gesture, and they started a search for the mystery man so they could give him a proper “thank you”. Georgia uploaded the video. It didn’t take long to find him. They invited him to the store for an official meet — and he went.
“He is such a kind man,” reads another post. “It was an absolute pleasure to meet him. The video has got millions of views and we hope he will be a positive influence on many. ”
24.How did Georgia respond when realizing she lost her purse?
A.She did nothing to recover it. B.She made a phone call to the station.
C.She planned to go back to look for it. D.She believed someone would send it to her.
25.Which can best describe Nyma?
A.Devoted and generous. B.Energetic and independent.
C.Honest and considerate. D.Responsible and hard-working.
26.What did Nyma advise Georgia to do?
A.Pass on the kindness. B.Be more careful next time.
C.Meet at the gas station for safety. D.Empty the garbage bag for her purse.
27.What can be the best title for the text?
A.Two Strangers Meet for the First Time
B.An Unexpected Meet with a Firefighter
C.A Moving Journey Recorded on Social Media
D.A Firefighter Drives Hours to Return a Purse
【答案】24.A 25.C 26.A 27.D
根据文章第一段“but thinking someone must have taken it away, she gave up the idea of going back to look for it and didn’t phone the station to ask about it.(但她认为一定是有人把它拿走了,于是她放弃了回去找的想法,也没有给加油站打电话询问。)” 故选A。
根据文章第二段“Nyma explained where he found the lost purse and said he decided to drive straight to her house, so she wouldn’t have to experience an extra moment of panic.(Nyma解释了他是在哪里找到丢失的钱包的,并说他决定直接开车到她家去,这样她就不必再经历一丝恐慌。)”和文章第三段“Georgia was moved to tears and kept offering to send Nyma money for his good deed, but he refused. He simply asked her to pay it forward, and explained that it was no trouble for him though Georgia knew he needed to drive hours to her house.(Georgia感动得流下了眼泪,并一直提出要给Nyma钱以感谢他的善举,但他拒绝了。他只是让她将这份善良传递下去,并解释说这对他来说没什么麻烦,尽管Georgia知道他需要开车数小时才能到达她家。)”可知,Nyma不辞辛劳地开车数小时将捡到的钱包归还给Georgia,并且在Georgia要给他钱时他拒绝了,只是让她将这份善良传递下去,这说明Nyma是一个诚实且体贴的人。故选C。
26.细节理解题。根据文章第三段中“He simply asked her to pay it forward.(他只是让她将这份善良传递下去。)” 故选A。
通读全文,尤其是第二段“Nyma explained where he found the lost purse and said he decided to drive straight to her house, so she wouldn’t have to experience an extra moment of panic.(尼玛解释了他在哪里找到丢失的钱包,并说他决定直接开车去她家,这样她就不用再经历额外的恐慌了)”可知,文章主要讲述了消防员Nyma不辞辛劳地开车数小时将捡到的钱包归还给失主Georgia的感人故事,所以选项D“一名消防员开车数小时去还一个钱包”能够概括文章主旨,是本文最好的标题。故选D。

Orange juice has never been more expensive. Concentrate orange-juice futures in New York have quadrupled (翻两番) since late 2021.
The problem is that the market for oranges to make concentrate is very concentrated. Growth of the fruit in Florida, once the world’s second-biggest producer, has decreased by 92% in the past 20 years after being hit by pests, hurricanes and rising costs. Other growers, such as Mexico and Spain, largely supply the fresh-fruit market. That leaves Brazil, which accounts for 70% of the world’s production and a similar share of exports. And now it, too, is in trouble.
At the start of the year the market already faced bitter prospects. Brazil’s drought is getting worse — parts of Sao Paulo, Brazil’s main orange-producing state, have seen no rain for four months. In May, growers from Sao Paulo forecast that the year’s crop would fall by 24% compared with the year before, after an ultra-hot flowering season. Farmers also faced an out-of-control resurgence in citrus greening (柑橘黄龙病), an untreatable bacterial disease that turns oranges sour before killing the tree.
Bigger farmers can afford to protect groves by using net s or insecticides. For smaller ones the only fix is to root out potentially diseased trees. High prices mean many prefer to keep their groves in the ground, so infections persist.
Planting in other regions may help, but suitable areas lack water access and are too far away from juice plants, which means that progress is very slow. Some farmers may opt to plant less risky crops than oranges, such as sugar cane.
In many fields damage has already been done, meaning this year’s harvest is doomed. The next few could be just as bad. New trees take four years to bear fruit; they too could be exposed to greening. Droughts could sap yields again.
Despite high prices, global demand for juice remains strong, because consumers are affluent enough to pay more. This may lift producers’ profits a little, but not by much, for they also face higher costs.
Shortages may start to occur soon, probably outside America and Europe, which will be prioritized by retailers as the largest orange-juice markets. Without a miracle, things look rotten for seekers of Vitamin C.
28.What contributes to the decline in orange production in Brazil?
A.Consumer preference towards fresh fruit.
B.Lack of water and a bacterial disease.
C.A decrease in the number of farmers.
D.The introduction of new markets.
29.What is the impact of citrus greening on orange production?
A.It increases the sweetness of oranges.
B.It affects the quality and yield of oranges.
C.It satisfies the demand for oranges as a health supplement.
D.It causes a decrease in the number of trees available for planting.
30.How are some orange farmers likely to address the challenges?
A.To seek less risky alternatives.
B.To root out diseased trees by using nets.
C.To plant oranges far from juice factories.
D.To turn oranges sour before killing the tree.
31.What does the underlined word “affluent” in Paragraph 7 probably mean?
A.Economical. B.Influential. C.Wealthy. D.Considerate.
【答案】28.B 29.B 30.A 31.C
根据文章第三段“Brazil’s drought is getting worse — parts of Sao Paulo, Brazil’s main orange-producing state, have seen no rain for four months.(巴西的干旱越来越严重——巴西主要的橙子生产州圣保罗的部分地区已经四个月没有降雨了)”和“Farmers also faced an out-of-control resurgence in citrus greening (柑橘黄龙病), an untreatable bacterial disease that turns oranges sour before killing the tree.(农民们还面临着柑橘绿化的柑橘黄龙病,这是一种无法治愈的细菌疾病,会在杀死橙子之前使其变酸)”可知,巴西柑橘产量下降的原因是缺水和细菌疾病,故选B项。
根据文章第五段中“Some farmers may opt to plant less risky crops than oranges, such as sugar cane.(一些农民可能会选择种植风险比柑橘低的作物,比如甘蔗)”可知,为了解决困难,一些种植柑橘的农民可能寻求风险较小的替代作物,故选A项。
根据文章第七段“Despite high prices, global demand for juice remains strong, because consumers are affluent enough to pay more.(尽管价格很高,但全球对果汁的需求依然强劲,因为消费者足够affluent,可以支付更高的价格)”可知,消费者可以支付更高的价格,说明是富有的。

It would be silly to be sad about the end of The New Musical Express (NME), which is closing its print edition after 66 years, maintaining only its painful digital existence. This isn’t because popular music doesn’t matter nor even because the magazine became so associated with one particular form. But NME’s best days were long past, and it’s hard to imagine current readers weeping. As an ad-supported free publication, no one thought it was exciting, necessary, or even surprising. It was unnecessary and could be easily thrown away: something you picked up for a while and then put down. Its former charm was due to its rarity, but now there is a lot of cultural wealth.
NME wasn’t as cutting-edge as it thought it was. It was too influenced by its own wrong concept and too often by a small range of music. For every radical (激进的) voice, there was one of the most conservative rocks, busy creating a great western tradition of popular music.
Yet for generations of suburban teenagers, the weekly music press was life-changing. NME made some bands famous, although not as often as it tried to, and helped people understand why the bands were important. More than that, the inkies were the gateways to a wider world of politics, culture and ideas — life. For readers, the writers were often the real stars. For writers, especially for working-class ones, NME was also transformative. It provided not only a national stage but a paid one. Without asking any personal information, NME just sent you to see some band and asked for 400 words on it. If it liked what you wrote, it’d give you an album to review.
Nowadays, there are new and instant pleasures. No teenagers have to rush to the news agent to find out what’s happening, nor wait for John Peel to come on the radio, or go around record shops. When artists can communicate directly with their audience and release materials without warning the media, cultural gatekeepers struggle for a place. The question is where excitement and world-expanding moments may now be found.
32.Why is NME closing its print edition?
A.It lost its past appeal. B.It was available in digital form.
C.Popular music no longer matters. D.Too many adverts occupy its pages.
33.What was the main role of NME for suburban teenagers?
A.To be a wider window into fashion. B.To help them form a fantastic band.
C.To dramatically influence their outlook. D.To provide a stage for them to be stars.
34.What might interest teenagers most now according to the last paragraph?
A.New excitements. B.John Peel. C.Cultural gatekeepers. D.Music records.
35.What’s the best title for the text?
A.The Origin of NME B.NME in the Good Old Days
C.The Gradual Death of NME D.Secrets to the Success of NME
【答案】32.A 33.C 34.A 35.C
根据第一段中“But NME’s best days were long past, and it’s hard to imagine current readers weeping. As an ad-supported free publication, no one thought it was exciting, necessary, or even surprising. It was unnecessary and could be easily thrown away: something you picked up for a while and then put down. (但是《新音乐快递》的辉煌日子早已远去,很难想象现在的读者会为之落泪。作为一份靠广告支持的免费出版物,没有人觉得它令人兴奋、有必要,甚至连让人惊讶都谈不上。它是多余的,可以很容易地被扔掉:一种你拿起来一会儿然后又放下的东西。)”可知,《新音乐快递》失去了它过去的吸引力,所以决定关闭印刷版。故选A项。
根据第三段中“Yet for generations of suburban teenagers, the weekly music press was life-changing. NME made some bands famous, although not as often as it tried to, and helped people understand why the bands were important. More than that, the inkies were the gateways to a wider world of politics, culture and ideas — life. (然而,对于几代郊区青少年来说,每周一次的音乐新闻改变了他们的生活。《新音乐快递》让一些乐队出名,尽管没有它试图出名的那么频繁,并帮助人们理解为什么乐队很重要。不仅如此,这本杂志还是通往更广阔的政治、文化和思想世界——生活的大门)”可知,NME对郊区青少年的主要作用是极大地影响了他们的世界观。故选C项。
34.细节理解题。根据最后一段中“Nowadays, there are new and instant pleasures. No teenagers have to rush to the news agent to find out what’s happening, nor wait for John Peel to come on the radio, or go around record shops.(如今,有了新的即时乐趣。青少年们不必再匆忙跑到报刊亭去了解正在发生的事情,也不必等待约翰·皮尔的广播节目,或者四处逛唱片店)”和“The question is where excitement and world-expanding moments may now be found.(问题是现在哪里可以找到令人兴奋和拓展世界的时刻)”可知,青少年有了新的即时乐趣,他们可能对新的令人兴奋的事物最感兴趣。故选A项。
通读全文,结合第一段中“It would be silly to be sad about the end of The New Musical Express (NME), which is closing its print edition after 66 years, maintaining only its painful digital existence. (为《新音乐快报》的终结而悲伤是愚蠢的,它在66年后关闭了印刷版,只保留了痛苦的数字存在)”可知,本文主要讲述了音乐杂志《新音乐快递》在66年后停止发行印刷版,只保留数字版的相关内容。故C项“The Gradual Death of NME (《新音乐快报》的逐渐消亡)”是文章内容的概括,是最佳标题。故选C项。

·DO avoid processed foods. “Avoiding processed foods greatly reduce risk for obesity and other diseases,” says Van Horn. Processed foods tend to be items that include ten or more ingredients, often with some you can’t find in your kitchen. 37
·DO read food labels. It’s important to read ingredient lists carefully and watch for different names of sugar. “There are 50-plus names for sugar,” says McBurnett. “It can get very confusing.” 38 And when you’re scanning the nutrition facts panel, a daily value (DV) of added sugar is acceptable between 5 percent and 20 percent.
· 39 Naturally occurring sugars found in milk, fruits and vegetables, are nutritious. All this isn’t to say that you will never again enjoy another slice of birthday cake or an ice-cold drink at the cinema. Your goal doesn’t have to be going completely sugar-free.
“Maybe you just want to get to a point where you feel you are at a comfortable level of consumption-as if you’re in control,” says Avena. “ 40 ”
A.DON’T avoid everything sweet.
B.DO refuse all the processed foods.
C.As a general rule, if it’s an ingredient that ends in ose, it’s sugar.
D.Some researches has linked processed foods to negative health outcomes.
E.Instead, healthy foods are usually the whole foods you can prepare at home.
F.Doing this slowly, over time, is the best approach to avoiding withdrawal symptoms.
G.But over time, consuming less added sugar is bound to actually make your life sweeter.
【答案】36.F 37.E 38.C 39.A 40.G
36.根据前文““What I advocate is making small changes to your behaviours and reducing the amount of sugar in your diet systematically,” says Avena.(“我提倡的是在你的行为上做一些小的改变,系统地减少饮食中的糖含量,”Avena说)”以及后文“People who go cold turkey (突然戒除) may experience headaches, anxiety , sleeplessness and intense cravings(突然戒除的人可能会感到头痛、焦虑、失眠和强烈的渴望)”可知,此处是在讲述提倡的是系统地减少饮食中的糖含量,而不是突然戒除,所以F项“Doing this slowly, over time, is the best approach to avoiding withdrawal symptoms.(慢慢地,随着时间的推移,是避免戒断症状的最好方法)”符合文意,承接上文,引出下文,而下文的症状为本句中的戒断症状。故选F项。
“Avoiding processed foods greatly reduce risk for obesity and other diseases,” says Van Horn. Processed foods tend to be items that include ten or more ingredients, often with some you can’t find in your kitchen.(避免加工食品。“避免加工食品大大降低了肥胖和其他疾病的风险,”范霍恩说。加工食品往往包含十种或更多的成分,其中一些你在厨房里找不到)”可知,本段讲述不要吃加工食品,所以E项“Instead, healthy foods are usually the whole foods you can prepare at home.(相反,健康食品通常是你可以在家准备的天然食品)”用健康食品和加工食品作对比,和前文构成转折关系,符合文意。故选E项。
38.根据前文“It’s important to read ingredient lists carefully and watch for different names of sugar. “There are 50-plus names for sugar,” says McBurnett. “It can get very confusing.”(仔细阅读成分表并注意不同名称的糖是很重要的。“糖有50多个名字,”麦克伯内特说。“这可能会非常令人困惑。”)”可知,此处在讲述阅读成分表以及糖的名字很多,所以C项“As a general rule, if it’s an ingredient that ends in ose, it’s sugar.(一般来说,如果一种成分以ose结尾,那就是糖)”是在介绍如何分辨糖的名字,符合文意。故选C项。
39.设空位于段首,是本段中心句,根据后文“Naturally occurring sugars found in milk, fruits and vegetables, are nutritious. All this isn’t to say that you will never again enjoy another slice of birthday cake or an ice-cold drink at the cinema. Your goal doesn’t have to be going completely sugar-free.(牛奶、水果和蔬菜中天然存在的糖是有营养的。所有这一切并不是说你再也不会在电影院享受另一片生日蛋糕或一杯冰镇饮料。你的目标不一定是完全无糖)”可知,本段讲述你的目标不一定是完全无糖,所以A项“DON’T avoid everything sweet.(不要回避所有甜的东西)”符合本段主题,为本段中心句。故选A项。
40.根据前文““Maybe you just want to get to a point where you feel you are at a comfortable level of consumption-as if you’re in control,” says Avena.(阿文纳说:“也许你只是想达到一个让自己感觉舒适的糖分摄入水平,就好像一切尽在掌控之中。”)”

My senior year of high school was an extremely busy one. If I wasn’t studying and worrying about my grades, I was taking part in multiple after-class activities or attempting to make preparations for college.
Finally, as my senior year began to wind down, I got a part-time job at a local cafe. I had figured that the job would be easy and, for the most part, stress-free. I pictured myself pouring excellent coffee, making delicious cakes and becoming close friends with the regular customers.
Who I hadn’t counted on were the people with great orders that chose to use the drive- through window, or the women who felt that the coffee was much too creamy, or the men that wanted their iced coffee remade again and again until it reached a certain level of perfection. There were moments when I was annoyed with the human race as a whole, simply because I couldn’t seem to please anyone. Nevertheless, I kept at it.
One rainy day, I spent my afternoon handing people their orders and waiting as they slowly counted their pennies. I tried to smile as the customers complained about the rain, but it was difficult to smile as they sat in their temperature-controlled cars with the windows rolled up while I dealt with huge droplets of water hanging from my visor On top of that, no one was tipping. Every time I looked into my nearly empty tip jar, I grew more depressed.
Around four o’clock, one of my regular customers named Peter came in looking depressed and defeated. My co-worker and I asked what the problem was and if we could help, but he wouldn’t reveal any details. He just said he felt like crawling into bed, pulling the sheets up over his head and staying there for a few years. I knew exactly how he felt.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
I decided to do something to lift his spirits.

I decided to do something to lift his spirits. Before Peter left, I handed him a bag along with his iced coffee. He looked at me questioningly because he hadn’t ordered anything but the coffee. He opened the bag and saw that I had given him his favorite type of cake. “It’s on me,” I told him. “Have a nice day.” I talked to him for a while and he told him about his recent troubles. I comforted him that all bad things would pass.
Chatting with me for a while, Peter seemed to gain a newfound energy. Around seven o’clock the next evening, Peter drove up to the window. He handed me a single pink rose. He said that he was glad there were still people like me in the world who care about him. I was very touched and almost forgot what had happened the previous day. I happily thanked him. As the day passed, I had plenty of complaining customers, but anytime I felt depressed, I thought of Peter and his kindness.

How To Kick The Habit of Eating Processed Foods For Good?
Basically, we all need a total sweetness reset in everything that we consume. “What I advocate is making small changes to your behaviours and reducing the amount of sugar in your diet systematically,” says Avena. “ 36 People who go cold turkey (突然戒除) may experience headaches, anxiety , sleeplessness and intense cravings”.
Follow these expert-approved tips to get you on the right track:
