V. Teaching Procedures
1. Lead-in (5 minutes)
Show some pictures of people doing different activities at a certain time. Ask students to describe what they see using simple past tense.
Then lead to the past continuous tense by asking "What were they doing at that time?".
2. Presentation (15 minutes)
Present the sentences in Grammar Focus on the blackboard.
Analyze the structure and usage of the past continuous tense.
Explain the difference between "while" and "when".
For example, "While John was taking photos, Mary bought a drink." emphasizes the simultaneous actions. "John was taking photos when Mary bought a drink." shows one action happening at the time of another action.
3. Practice (15 minutes)
4a: Ask students to look at the table and write sentences with both "while" and "when" as shown in the example.
4b: Students fill in the blanks with "was", "were", "when" or "while". Check the answers together.
4c: Students fill in the chart about what they were doing at different times last Sunday. Then ask their partners and have a conversation.
4. Summary (5 minutes)
Summarize the key points of this lesson: the past continuous tense and the usage of "while" and "when".
Encourage students to use these grammar points in their daily communication.
VI. Homework
Write a short passage about what you and your family were doing at a certain time last weekend.
Teaching Reflection
In this lesson, I aimed to help students master the past continuous tense and the usage of "while" and "when". Through various activities such as picture description, sentence writing, and conversation practice, students actively participated in the class and showed great interest in learning.
Most students were able to understand the grammar points well and use them correctly in practice. However, some students still had difficulty distinguishing the usage of "while" and "when". In future teaching, I need to provide more examples and exercises to help them better understand the difference. Also, I should encourage more students to speak up and express their ideas in class to improve their oral communication skills. Overall, this lesson was a valuable experience for both me and the students.
