Should swimming lessons be compulsory in schools?
Guangdong Province is set to make swimming lessons compulsory (必修的) in primary schools starting from 2020, proposing (提出) the courses should be given from the fourth grade. Do we need to make swimming compulsory in schools? Forum (论坛) readers share their opinions.
White Bear (Poland)
In Poland swimming lessons are not compulsory, but most of the schools have them. I think that when it is only possible, there should be the swimming lessons for kids. It is a life-saving skill.
Mister Panda (France)
I come from France where swimming lessons in school are compulsory (dating back to Charlemagne). I even got my life-saving certificate in school.
Boilermaker (Expert in China)
There are swimming lessons in my city, but I was very disappointed in how they were taught. The kids spent 45 minutes of the one-hour lesson practicing strokes on dryland. They only spent 15 minutes in the water. All of the children panicked and sank immediately to the bottom. Then all of the parents scolded the children, telling them they weren’t paying attention to the teacher and that they were failures.
Yunzhang (China)
It is a pity that many Chinese athletes have won world championships in swimming while most schools don’t have the swimming facilities. Swimming is an important life-saving skill that everyone should have access to. The earlier, the better. The government needs to put money into the popularity of the sport.
21.Who is doubtful about the effect of swimming lessons?
A.White Bear. B.Mister Panda. C.Boilermaker. D.Yunzhang.

“Your playful days are over,” my brother said to me when he knew I was going to be a Senior One student. Then he continued telling me that senior school life was boring because I had to do a large amount of homework every day. The subjects were much more difficult than those of junior school.
I stepped into the school gate with a nervous heart. However, I was surprised to find what I experienced there was completely different from what my brother had told me.
The teachers gave excellent lessons in their own special way. They talked with me in a natural and fair way, as if I was an adult. All of them are so knowledgeable (学识渊博) and they not only explained the contents of textbooks but also provided extra information from other sources. Every word they said in classes made me so excited and interested that I had a strong desire to take in as much as I could.
In fact, my playful days were not over at all in senior school. There were many kinds of activities I could take part in. For example, sports meetings, the art festival, English corner, outing and so on. Best of all, generally, students organized the activities rather than teachers. Through this process, I improved my leadership abilities and communication skills. I've become mature (成熟的). I am not a kid any more.
Now if anyone asks me: “Through your process of growing up, which part is most impressive up till now?” Well, the answer will absolutely be my “senior high school life”.
24.How did the writer feel when he started his senior high school?
A.Very excited. B.A little worried.
C.Quite relaxed. D.Embarrassed.
25.What was the writer's general impression of his teachers?
A.Strict and organized. B.Modest and hardworking.
C.Learned and easy going. D.Helpful and kind-hearted.
26.What has the writer learned by joining in different after-class activities?
A.Reading and writing skills. B.The understanding of textbooks
C.Leadership and social skills. D.Doing housework.
27.What can you learn from the last paragraph?
A.His senior school life is the most memorable.
B.Senior school life was boring and tiring.
C.He will no longer believe in his brother.
D.The writer did well in all his subjects.
C
Parents can cut the chances of their children getting fat simply by keeping them longer at table. Just three extra minutes at a family mealtime could help avoid child fatness. Research found that the reasons might lie in communication and the importance of a scheduled mealtime.
Dr.Barbara Fiese said, “ Children, whose families have a 20minute meal over four times a week, weigh less than kids who leave the table after 15 to 17 minutes. Over time, those extra minutes per meal add up and become really powerful.”
Researchers studied 200 family mealtimes, testing the influences of mealtime behavior of families with children in primary school. They found that families, who said that shared mealtimes were an important part of family life and had special meaning for them, were less likely to have fat children. Similarly, families, who talked more together and communicated more positively during the meal, were more likely to have healthyweight children.
Teaching families how to make the most of family mealtimes was a wise idea. Dr. Fiese said, “ This is something we can target and teach.” She added. “It’s also important to recognize the increasing differences of families and their sometimes complex living schedules that may challenge their abilities to plan ahead and set some time to communicate with each other.”
Families in poorer US neighborhoods faced a lot of problems, including poor chances of getting healthy food. But even so, regular high quality family mealtimes made a difference to the children’s weight. Dr. Fiese said, “Three to four extra minutes per meal will make a healthy weight more possible.”
28.How long is reasonable for a family mealtime according to the text?
A.About 10 minutes.
B.About 15 minutes.
C.About 17 minutes.
D.About 20 minutes.
29.What does the author want to tell us in Paragraph 3?
A.The result of a study.
B.Different eating habits.
C.Causes of child fatness.
D.The importance of normal eating.
30.What is the advantage of a longer family mealtime?
A.Children can enjoy their meals better.
B.Children can have a good rest while eating.
C.Children can communicate more during the time.
D.Children can have more time to choose what they like.
31.What can be the best title of the text?
A.Mealtime Talk Helps Lose Weight.
B.Poorer Families Have Thinner Kids.
C.Healthy Food Makes Normal Weight.
D.Longer Family Mealtime Help Child Fatness.

The complexities of human relations are difficult enough for adults to identify—and they have at least some idea of the rules. Children have yet to learn those rules. Infants (婴儿) are, nevertheless, able quickly to identify close relationships between other people, and thus to build up a map of the social world around them.
How this comes out has puzzled sociologists for decades. In a paper just published in Science, Ashley Thomas of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology proposes a partial answer: saliva (唾液) shared by kissing, for example, or the common use of an eating or drinking tool.
The researchers came to the conclusion based on a series of studies. They selected two groups of several dozen youngsters. One was a set of babies aged between eight and ten months. The other was a group of toddlers aged between 16 and 18 months.
Each infant was shown a video of an adult interacting with a puppet (木偶), followed by another video of that puppet in trouble while the same adult, and also a stranger, looked on. When the interaction in the first video appeared to involve the sharing of saliva—puppet and adult taking constant bites from an orange in turn—both sets of infants looked mainly at that same adult in the second video, and not the stranger. When the interaction in the first video was friendly but less thick, such as passing a ball back and forth, the infants had equal expectations of both adults when shown the second video.
The conclusion was reconfirmed by subsequently replacing the puppet with a different one and repeating the second test. In this case the children showed no consistent expectation about which adult would intervene to relieve the puppet’s trouble.
Conducting her experiment by video enabled Dr. Thomas to cast her search for trial participants beyond Massachusetts. She nevertheless decided, in this first instance, to limit things to the United States. Future runs, she hopes, will reach beyond that country’s borders.
32.What does the underlined word “this” in paragraph 2 refer to?
A.Adult’s identifying human relations.
B.Children’s learning interpersonal rules.
C.Babies’ getting to know new things around them.
D.Infants’ recognizing relationships between people.
33.Which can best describe the research process?
A.Well-designed. B.Time-consuming.
C.Tightly-scheduled. D.Risk-taking.
34.What can the tests illustrate?
A.Infants tend to believe in adults blindly. B.Saliva sharing is indicative of closeness.
C.Infants are competent to show sympathy. D.Saliva sharing acts as a comfort for infants.
35.What was Dr. Thomas’s expectation for the future tests?
A.An extension of age group. B.More advanced equipment.
C.A broader regional coverage. D.Diverse experimental methods.

How to Remember What You Read
Reading is important. But the next step is making sure that you remember what you've read! 36 You may have just read the text, but the ideas, concepts and images(形象)may fly right out of your head. Here are a few tricks for remembering what you read.
● 37
If the plot, characters, or word usage is confusing for you, you likely won't be able to remember what you read. It's a bit like reading a foreign language. If you don't understand what you're reading, how would you remember it? But there are a few things you can do... Use a dictionary; look up the difficult words.
● Are you connected?
Does a character remind you of a friend? Does the setting make you want to visit the place? Does the book inspire you, and make you want to read more? With some books, you may feel a connection right away. 38 How willing are you to make the connections happen?
● Read it; hear it; be it!
Read the lines. Then, speak them out loud. And, put some character into the words. When he was writing his novels, Charles Dickens would act out the parts of the characters. He'd make faces in the mirror, and change his voice for each character. 39
● How often do you read?
If you read frequently, you'll likely have an easier time with remembering what you’re reading and what you've read. 40 As you make reading a regular part of your life, you'll make more connections, stay more focused and understand the text better. You’ll learn to enjoy literature- as you remember what you read!
A.Are you confused?
B.Practice makes perfect.
C.What's your motivation?
D.Memory is sometimes a tricky thing.
E.Marking helps you remember what you read.
F.But other books require a bit more work on your part.
G.You can do the same thing when you are reading the text!

第二节(满分25分)
67.阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。续写的词数应为150左右。
It was the middle of winter some 30 years ago. I was a young father with three little children depending on me. My college education, however, wasn’t helping me to find a good job in our depressed area. My work as a teacher had dried up and now I was working in a saw mill (锯木厂) for just above the minimum wage.
As I got ready to go to work I wrapped band-aids (创可贴) around my fingers and put more in my pockets. Cutting and piling wood for 8 hours a day had caused my fingers to split and bleed at their tips in the cold, dry, winter air. Then I walked down to my car in the snow and hoped it would start.
That day at work was harder than normal. The machines kept breaking down. And we had to rush to catch back up as the wood piled up. On top of it all the heaters in the building weren’t working and we could see our breath as we spent hours chopping, piling, carrying, and packaging the hard wood flooring to be shipped out.
When the work day finally ended, I walked tiredly toward the time clock, took off my work gloves and inspected my aching fingers. The splits were worse than ever and I had bled through the band-aids again. I tried to straighten out but my bad back cramped (绞痛) up as I did. I started my car and drove back home. I looked at the snow and blinked back tears. I wondered how long I could keep doing this, if things would ever get any better, and why life was so hard.
I tried to put a smile on my face as I opened my front door, but instead one appeared naturally. My daughter ran up to me, yelling “Daddy”, and wrapped her little arms around my neck. I lifted her up and my heart exploded with love.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
My tired body didn’t feel so tired any more.

【原文】Hello, everyone. My name is John. Today I want to say something mainly about my daily life. First I want to say my life has changed a lot. When I was a child, I had a lot of time to play. But now 1 have to study all day. I used to play baseball and basketball with my classmates, but now I just stay at home and do my homework. I seldom watch TV these days, for I‘m often busy preparing for my tests. Books were my good friends. I used to read a lot of cartoon books and storybooks instead of reading textbooks all day like now. I enjoy doing homework with my friends. But my parents don’t allow me to do that, because they think we will talk instead of studying. I disagree. We can learn a lot from each other. My mother is a doctor, and my father is an engineer. They expect me to be a doctor when I grow up, but I want to be a writer. Maybe I’ll be a doctor anyway, but I don’t think I could be a happy doctor.
