B When Roy Austin went on his first wildlife trip back in 2018, his only goal for the leisurely vacation was to catch sight of some African wildlife in its natural habitat—but he ended up finding something much more meaningful. He was most captivated (迷住) by the people he met in rural Kenya—particularly at the Amboseli Primary and Secondary School in Amboseli National Park. In addition to befriending many of the students and teachers, Austin was surprised to learn how difficult it was to get books and school supplies for the children. “In rural Kenya, the government does not build school buildings. You either build it yourself or raise money to have it built,” says Austin. “A teacher was asked if they had a library. She replied, ‘ No, but we would love to have a library.’ That stuck in my mind.” When Austin eventually returned to his home in Bluffton, South Carolina, he launched Libraries for Kids International. Since starting the charity, Austin has managed to ship more than 1000 books to 11 schools across Kenya and Tanzania. He sends the books through the post office rather than FedEx to keep the shipping costs down. As it continues to collect books and donations for additional shipments, Austin says that the charity is now helping to move a shipping container of 22, 000 books from Atlanta to Kenya. In the future, the philanthropist (慈善家) hopes to start sending donations to South America as well. “Many people told me that it can’t be done. It’s too expensive to ship books, and they will disappear going through customs,” Austin says. “However, every worthwhile project will have problems and barriers. If you focus on the problems, you will never start. On the contrary, if you focus on the aim and solve the problems as they arise, most anything is possible.” 4. What problem does Austin find in rural Kenya? A. Education depends on charity. B. Students lack education resources. C. Books get lost going through customs. D. Families can’t afford the kids’ schooling. 5. What does Austin do for the people in rural Kenya? A. He teaches at school. B. He funds a library for them. C. He reduces the shipping costs. D. He ships books to schools. 6. What can we learn from Austin’s story? A. It is the first step that costs. B. Success belongs to the persevering. C. Every bit of effort makes a big difference. D. Nothing is difficult to a determined mind. 7. Which of the following best describes Austin? A. A crazy adventurer. B. A devoted educator. C. A charity enthusiast. D. A passionate volunteer. C When you set a foot outside of your door to drop trash, go to a social event or go for a walk, thoughts like “I hope I don’t see anyone I know” or “please don’t talk to me” may run through your mind. I’ve also said such things to myself. Sometimes the last thing you want to do is to talk with someone, especially someone new. Why do we go out of our ways to avoid people? Do we think meeting new people is a waste of time? Or are we just lazy, thinking that meeting someone new really is a trouble? Communication is the key to life. We have been told that many times. Take the past generations, like our parents, for example. They seem to take full advantage of that whole “communication” idea because they grew up talking face to face while Generation-Y grew up staring at screens. We spend hours of our days sitting on Facebook. We send messages to our friends and think about all of the things we want to say to certain people that we don’t have the courage to do in reality. Nowadays, we are so caught up in our little circle of friends—our comfort zone. We love it that they laugh at our jokes, understand our feelings and can read our minds. Most importantly, they know when we want to be alone. They just get us. Holding a conversation with someone new means agreeing with things that you don’t really believe and being someone you think they want you to be—it is, as I said before, a trouble. It takes up so much energy, and at some point or another, it is too tiring. But meeting new people is important. Life is too short, so meet all the people you can meet, make the effort to go out and laugh. Remember, every “hello” leads to a smile—and a smile is worth a lot. 8. What do we learn about the author? A. He likes to meet someone new. B. He feels stressed out lately. C. He’s active in attending social events. D. He used to be afraid of talking to others. 9. What’s the problem of Generation-Y in the author’s eyes? A. They rely on the Internet to socialize. B. They are less confident in themselves. C. They have difficulty in communicating. D. They are unwilling to make new friends. 10. Why do many young people avoid meeting new people? A They think it troublesome. B. They are busy with their study. C. They fear to disappoint their friends. D. They want to do meaningful work. 11. Why does the author write the text? A. To stress the importance of friends. B. To give tips on how to meet new people. C. To encourage people to meet new people. D. To display the disadvantages of Generation-Y. D Researchers say they have translated the meaning of gestures that wild chimpanzees (黑猩猩) use to communicate. They say wild chimps communicate 19 specific messages to one another with a “vocabulary” of 66 gestures. The scientists discovered this by following and filming groups of chimps in Uganda, and examining more than 5,000 incidents of these meaningful exchanges. Dr Catherine Hobaiter, who led the research, said that this was the only form of intentional communication to be recorded in the animal kingdom. Only humans and chimps, she said, had a system of communication where they deliberately sent a message to another group member. “That’s what’s so amazing about chimp gestures,” she said. “They’re the only thing that looks like human language in that respect.” Although previous research has shown that apes and monkeys can understand complex information from another animal’s call, the animals do not appear to use their voices intentionally to communicate messages. This was a significant difference between calls and gestures, Dr Hobaiter said. Chimps will check to see if they have the attention of the animal with which they wish to communicate. In one case, a mother presents her foot to her crying baby, signaling: “Climb on me.” The youngster immediately jumps on to its mothers back and they travel off together. “The big message from this study is that there is another species (物种) out there. that is meaningful in its communication, so that’s not unique to humans,” said Dr Hobaiter. Dr Susanne Shultz, an evolutionary biologist from the University of Manchester, said the study was praiseworthy in seeking to enrich our knowledge of the evolution of human language. But, she added, the results were “a little disappointing”. “The vagueness of the gesture meanings suggests either that the chimps have little to communicate or we are still missing a lot of the information contained in their gestures and actions,” she said. “Moreover, the meanings seem to not go beyond what other animal convey with non-verbal communication. So, it seems the gulf remains. ” 12. What do chimps and humans have in common according to Dr Hobaiter? A. Memorizing specific words. B. Understanding complex information. C. Using voices to communicate. D. Communicating messages on purpose. 13. What did Dr Shultz think of the study? A. It was well designed but poorly conducted. B. It was a good try but the findings were limited. C. It was inspiring but the evidence was unreliable. D. It was a failure but the methods deserved praise. 14. What does the underlined word “gulf” in the last paragraph mean? A. Difference. B. Conflict. C. Balance. D. Connection. 15. Which of the following is the best title for the text? A. Chimpanzee behaviour study achieved a breakthrough B. Chimpanzees developed specific communication skills C. Chimpanzees: the smartest species in the animal kingdom D. Chimpanzee language: communication gestures translated As with most teaching methods, online learning also has its own negatives. If only Mamma could have one!” Immediately, the store owner recognized the familiar girl and asked her to pick one. Kitty just shook her head and ran away shyly. Kitty’s mother was extremely poor. She had been a dressmaker ever since Kitty’s father died, and had to work hard to earn a living for herself and Kitty. Unfortunately, she had recently become very sick and had to lie in bed all day long. When Kitty was away at school, the house was incredibly cold and cheerless. She missed her little angel — that is what she called Kitty. Kitty took great care of her mother. She cooked her food, mostly soup. They could not afford fresh fruit. Kitty would even sing to her mother at night. When Kitty reached the school that day, her thoughts were full of her sick mother and the lovely red apples. She was usually an excellent student, but that day she made so many mistakes that the teacher looked at her in surprise. The little girl could only sit at her desk, with her book before her, and dream of those red apples. When school was dismissed, Kitty started slowly homeward. She had walked only a short distance when she saw a man in front of her drop his wallet. Running quickly forward, she picked it up. The wallet felt quite heavy in Kitty’s little hand. “There must be a good deal of money in it,” thought Kitty. “How I wish I could keep it, so that I would then be able to purchase a red apple for Mamma, and so many other things she needs.” Kitty knew this would not be right, so she hurried after the man. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ The store owner saw the familiar girl rushing in, one dollar in hand. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$ 2024-2025学年上学期永安九中、金沙高级中学“联考”试卷 高二英语 完卷时间:120分钟;满分:150分; 注意事项: 1. 1. 4. A. They think it troublesome. D 9. A 10. A 11. 根据第一段“When you set a foot outside of your door to drop trash, go to a social event or go for a walk, thoughts like ‘I hope I don’t see anyone I know’ or ‘please don’t talk to me’ may run through your mind. I’ve also said such things to myself. Sometimes the last thing you want to do is to talk with someone, especially someone new. 根据第三段“We spend hours of our days sitting on Facebook. We send messages to our friends and think about all of the things we want to say to certain people that we don’t have the courage to do in reality. 故选A项。 根据倒数第二段“Holding a conversation with someone new means agreeing with things that you don’t really believe and being someone you think they want you to be—it is, as I said before, a trouble. 故选A项。 根据最后一段“But meeting new people is important. Life is too short, so meet all the people you can meet, make the effort to go out and laugh. “The vagueness of the gesture meanings suggests either that the chimps have little to communicate, or we are still missing a lot of the information contained in their gestures and actions,” she said. Chimpanzee language: communication gestures translated 【答案】12. D 13. B 14. A 15. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】 Kitty knew this would not be right, so she hurried after the man. Touching him on the arm, she said, “Please, Sir. You dropped your wallet.” “Thank you, dear,” said the gentleman, taking the wallet. Then, noticing how poorly dressed she was, he said, “Why didn’t you keep the wallet, my child?” “Because that would be stealing,” replied Kitty. “But,” she continued honestly, “before I thought I must give it back to you, I did wish I could keep it, for then I could buy Mamma a red apple.” Hearing this, the man handed her a dollar and said,” You are a good girl. Take the dollar so that you can buy your mother a red apple.” Then, the man said goodbye to Kitty and left. With the dollar, Kitty happily ran to the store. The store owner saw the familiar girl rushing in, one dollar in hand. He quickly picked out the biggest, roundest, and reddest apple and gave it to Kitty. Taking the apple, kitty was very happy and handed the dollar to the owner. But the owner didn’t take it, saying, “You keep it and the apple is free.” Kitty was so pleased and thanked the kind store owner. Then, she went back home. Her mother was surprised to see the apple and the dollar. Kitty told her mother the whole story. Her mother kissed her and said, “You see, dear, it always pays to be honest and truthful.” 词汇激活 行为类 ①注意到:notice/pay attention to ②回复:reply/respond/answer ③回家:go back home/return home 情绪类 ①感谢某人:thank sb./be grateful to sb. ②高兴的:happy/pleased/delighted 【点睛】[高分句型1] Touching him on the arm, she said, “Please, Sir. You dropped your wallet.” (运用了非谓语动词做状语) [高分句型2] Take the dollar so that you can buy your mother a red apple.(运用了so that引导的目的状语从句) 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$
