教学过程
Greetings: Hello, everyone. Welcome to my class. Today we are going to learn Unit 2 Healthy Lifestyle Using Language (1): Listening and Speaking: give advice on changing bad habits.
Step1:
Learning Objectives:
At the end of the class, you will be able to:
1. make use of the “Habit Cycle” to analyse problems;
2. learn about how to change bad habits to healthier ones;
3. learn to ask/give advice and accept/refuse others’ advice politely;
4. practise a conversation about advice on bad habits.
Step2:
Revise what the “habit cycle” is .
Firstly, there is a “cue”, an action, event, or situation that acts as a signal to do something.
Secondly, there is a “routine”, the regular action you take in response to the cue.
Thirdly, there is the “reward”, the good thing or feeling we get from the routine.
Step3:
(1) Look at the following pictures, tell the possible reasons and then give advice to settle these problems based on “Habit Cycle”. Previous to this, the teacher take the first picture:not sleeping enough as an example and show you how to use the “Habit Cycle” to analyze it.
(2) Based on what the teacher have analyzed, students are required to complete the other four situations in the chart.
Step4:
(1) Listen to a conversation to check whether students have learned the theory or not/ in the form of listening comprehension. Before doing that, please consider the following two questions.
1.What are the two students problems?
2.How does the expert help them work out their problems?
(2) Listen to the conversation and complete the chart.
(3) Listen again and answer these questions.
Why is a good night’s sleep important for the first student?
Why does the second student never exercise?
What is the expert’s bad habit? Do you think it is a health problem?
What would you advise the expert to do to control this habit?
Step5:
Having heard the tape twice, I strongly believe that you have got a better understanding of it. Of all that was said, we are supposed to tell the difference between facts and opinions in order to listen to the real advice.
Decide whether these statements from the conversation are facts(F) or opinions(o).Discuss the opinion with a partner and see if you agree on them.
1 _____ It was a really interesting talk.
2 _____ It often takes me half an hour to fall asleep at night.
3 _____ You look tired. Not enough sleep, right?
4 _____ It is affecting my school work.
5 _____ I failed in all my school subjects this semester.
6 _____ I usually pick up my phone.
7 _____ I think the phone is the problem.
8 _____ A five-minute walk is so easy that it is hard to say no!
Step6:
(1) As moving on to our speaking part, there lie two questions needing considering.
If you or others have problems, what will you say to ask for or give advice?
Will you totally agree or disagree with others’ advice? If yes or no, what will you say to accept or refuse the advice?
(2) If we want to give the proper answers to the two questions, we must learn some useful expressions.
Here comes some expressions in the tape script:
When the students ask for advice:
The first Student said: I have trouble sleeping.
The second Student said: I feel depressed about ...
I want to ..., but I always just .... What can I do?
When it is the doctor’s turn to give advice, he said
Don’t keep your phone in your bedroom at night.
You must take small steps to begin with.
Make the routine to turn off your phone and walk outside.
Don’t worry about losing weight at first.
Focus on the habit of going out and build from there.
When the students accept advice:
The first Student: Thank you, Doctor. I’ll give it a try.
The second Student: Thanks for the advice, Doctor. I’ll try it tonight.
(3) There are some other expressions that we can take a reference to when we have a conversation about change bad habits with our partners.
Step7:
Bearing these expressions in your mind, now please Work in pairs. Choose a bad habit from the table below and have a conversation with your partner about it. Here are 7 situations, and it has shown an example based on the situation “TV addict”.
(1) Based on the expressions and analysis, the teacher has shown an example about a mind-map: “Habit cycle” to solve the problem: sleeping too much.
(2) Listen to a conversation from students.
Step8:
Summary
Step9:
Homework
Please draw mind-maps of “Habit Cycle” of the rest bad habits from the table or others you are interested, just like what I have displayed before, then make them up into conversations and demonstrate the conversations next class.
