(2023-2024学年高二上学期·南京市江宁区·期末统考)Many organ transplants(器官移植)come from those who are blood relatives or close friends. It’s rare for a person to make a living organ donation to a stranger. Not surprising when you consider the operative risks and other potential problems.
That’s what Paul Wagner thought until he read an article about matchingdonors.com, a website that connects people who need transplants with those willing to be donors(捐赠者), Paul grew up in a poor family and admits to making many mistakes in his youth, including using drugs. “But I always got another chance,” he said. Paul said help came when he needed it most, and because of that, he wanted to give someone else a chance.
That someone turned out to be former opera singer Gail Tomas, who was suffering from kidney(肾)failure and badly needed a new kidney. But her hopes for a donor were so slight because of her O+ blood type. Paul, also type O+, emailed Gail, offering to donate his kidney to her. He said, “It would be wrong of me not to help.” That attitude, however, was not shared by most surgeons, who refused to participate. The surgeon who agreed only did so after long interviews with Paul to be certain about his motivation. The transplant finally took place on National Donor Day.
Afraid that Gail and her family would feel tied to him merely out of appreciation, Paul made it clear to Gail that he didn’t want to get to know her. But Gail insisted on making friends with him and was trying to find an opportunity to break down the barriers to their friendship.

Joey sat at the kitchen table, reading the sports page of the morning paper. He heard his grand-father coming down the stairs. When his grandfather came into the kitchen, Joey could see he wasn’t his usual happy self.
“Morning, Grandfather,” he said. His grandfather sat across the table and didn’t pick up the paper to read. Instead, he asked, “Joey, is anything happening in town today?”
“There’s a ball game between Doraville Middle School and my school tonight,” Joey told him. “It’ll be a close race, but I think we’ll win. Would you like to go?”
Joey felt bad for his grandfather. He knew he couldn’t read. His grandfather had told him of-ten, “I didn’t have the chance to go to school regularly. Looking after the animals and tending to the crops on the farm were much more important in those days than learning to read.”
One day, Joey stopped at the library to look through some books. He saw a sign on the library wall. It read: “Do you know somebody who doesn’t read? We can help. Just call this number.” Joey hurried home and showed the sign to his grandfather. “Somebody can teach you how to read. It says so right here,” Joey explained. Joey jotted the number down.
Several days later, Grandfather put on his best suit of clothes for his first day of school. He arrived at the library an hour early and met with his teacher. During that first class, he was so worried and nervous that he couldn’t concentrate. He couldn’t remember anything the teacher said. A few weeks later, Grandfather was studying when he looked up at Joey and said, “I’m too old to learn all of this.” He closed the book in frustration. “Oh, Grandfather, don’t get discouraged,” Joey said. Grandfather was stubborn. “I can’t do it,” he said.

Counting the votes took about five minutes, but it seemed like hours. At last, after three long years, the “PCHS” letters on my uniform would soon be edged with gold cording(金线), identifying me as the important Captain of Polk County High School cheerleaders(啦啦队员), which was quite an accomplishment before I ended my school days in a blaze of glory. As Coach Maguire prepared to announce, I inched to the edge of my seat, ready to spring to my feet as soon as she said my name.
“Girls,” she began, “it is my pleasure to announce that Terry Shaw has been elected Captain of Polk County High School cheerleading team.” A resounding cheer was heard throughout the gym. How could this be? I hadn’t missed a practice or a game in three years. Terry couldn’t claim this flawless record.
Everyone gathered around Terry with congratulations, but I was glued to my seat. It felt like she had stolen my moment and dream. After a few minutes, I walked over to Terry on shaky legs and managed a “Good luck, Terry,” in a whisper that barely masked my urge to cry. Terry hugged me close and said, “I wasn’t expecting this, Annie. What a shock!” I didn’t reply with mean words but deep inside I wanted to do just that.
All the way home, I sobbed. There was no way I was going to stay on a team so blind that they couldn’t see the one most deserving of being named captain. I slammed the front door, stomped up the steps and threw myself onto my bed in a dramatic display of sobs and sighs that eventually gave way to sleep.
The next morning I marched over to my closet and took out my uniform. Once it was in my hands and I held it close to me, I knew I couldn’t quit. Heartbroken as I was, my true love was cheering with my teammates.
How hard it was to go to that first practice after Terry had been named captain. The moment I arrived, Coach Maguire asked me to take three of the new girls and work with them on our basic practice. Terry was assigned three as well.

(2023-2024学年高二上学期·苏州市·期末统考)57. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使其构成一篇完整的短文。
Most nights, there was a light coming from the tiny, windswept island on the other side of the lake. I always thought that was strange because, supposedly, no one lived there anymore. That’s why people called it Ghost Island. Stranger still, one night, the light was flashing on and off.
“There’s the light again,” I said to my brother, Dale, who is 16.
“Yeah. Strange,” he replied, looking carefully across the water.
“Take a look, Ben,” Dad said. He had set up his telescope to view the planets, but now it was aimed at Ghost Island. I squinted(眯眼)through the eyepiece. There’s a spotlight, and it’s flickering(闪烁)— like there’s something in front of it.
Dale looked too. “I bet it’s a tree branch, blowing back and forth in the wind.”
“You’re probably right,” Dad said. “Now check this out.” He pointed his telescope toward the sky and showed us the stars. While we took turns looking, I asked Dad what he knew about Ghost Island.
“Mr. Mori has owned it since I was a kid, so he must be quite old by now,” Dad said. “He used to spend summers there, but I wonder if he still comes up at all.”
Later, Dale and Dad lay on the ground watching for meteors(流星). I wasn’t having much luck, so turned my attention to Ghost Island. But it had gone dark. I looked across the lake, which was smooth as glass. “Huh,” I said. “There’s the light again.” And the flashes appeared in a definite pattern. “It’s an SOS distress signal(遇难信号)!” I cried out.
Dale laughed. “Morse code? No one uses that old stuff anymore.”
“No, watch,” I insisted. “It goes dot-dot-dot, dash-dash-dash, dot-dot-dot. That’s SOS.”
“How do you even know that?” Dale asked.
“Boy Scouts(童子军). When I was in it, I had to send and receive messages using Morse code to get one of my merit badges(功绩徽章).”
“Maybe you two should check on Mr. Mori,” Dad said. “If he’s at his cabin(小屋), that is.”

One day in 1964, my mother came home from work and announced that she had found a pet for the family. My sister asked what it was. My mother said it was a poodle dog named Pepe.
I couldn’t believe my sister wanted a poodle dog — especially one with such a strange name. But she had made up her mind.
Pepe arrived the next night, his short tail bobbing(摆动)happily. I remained distant, thinking poodles should have stayed in France. My sister played with him until bedtime, and he begged for more attention. I ignored him.
He was a skilled digger, so our backyard fence wouldn’t hold him. We tied him; he pulled out of his collar(颈圈). We drove stakes(木桩)into the ground; he dug them up. We put a harness on him, staked the ground and tied him to the laundry pole; he was still waiting for me at the front door at the end of the day, smiling happily.
Every day, he asked me with his eyes to play with him or take him somewhere. At night, he would wait until I fell asleep, leave his bed by the wall heater and jump onto the end of my bed.
One night, I was in a half dream state. Suddenly, my throat and my eyes hurt, and some animal was whining(哀鸣)in my ear. I opened my eyes and saw fog in my room. I wondered who left the window open. Pepe whined and nibbled(咬)on my blouse. Then I woke up and realized that it wasn’t fog in my room — it was smoke.
I couldn’t breathe standing up, so I got down on the floor and crawled(爬行)beneath the smoke. Pepe followed my every move, his curly-haired stomach struggling on the ground. If I hadn’t been so scared, I would have laughed.

Several years ago, I had to replace a receptionist(接待员)for my unit. Before I advertised for the position, I was approached by another younger manager, who was one of my best friends, and asked if I would consider a transfer(转换)from his staff instead of opening a new competition. My natural question was to ask who he wanted me to consider and why.
It appeared from his description of this employee, Maria, that she was having a lot of problems performing her duties, and had difficulties with her boss, and did not appear to respond to any attempts he, the manager, had made to settle the issues. Now, after listening to his explanation, I really had severe doubts. What crossed my mind, after this discussion, was that he wanted me to take a problem off his hands.
I told him I would think about it and would let him know the next day. As promised, after thinking more about this potential performance issue, I decided that I would agree to speak with Maria privately before I made any decision.
And, what I found out during this interview, left me quite shocked and deep in thought. As it turned out, the performance issue appeared to result from working for a boss who never extended a good morning greeting, never gave a word of encouragement, and was constantly changing the work load and routines, always turning a deaf ear to what the employees said. The end result was a totally ruined employee who was unconfident, hated to see a new work day start.

(2023-2024学年高二上学期·江苏省常州高级中学·期末校考)Lots of times, I’ve looked at that tree on the sandbank across the estuary(渡口). One day, I’m sitting on the beach with my friend Duncan. The tide is in, it’s all the way across to the sandbank. "I could swim to that tree,” I say.
“Go on, then,” says Duncan. I put down my towel and walk to the edge. I surge into the water with three heaves of butterfly stroke(蝶泳), just to feel how strong I am in the water and how the sun feels on my back as I fling out of the sea like a fish.
One, two, three, I’m breathing steadily and my arms are lifting in rhythm(有节奏地). Then I remember that story in the paper last week. A man jumped into the water and grabbed a shark by its tail. How could I forget that shark? I’m sprinting(冲刺)through the water, which is suddenly so immense(无边无际的), so deep. Soon my arms and legs feel heavy. It’s that feeling I get at the end of a race when I’ve given it everything.
I’ve got to pace myself, I think. The tree is far off ahead somewhere. When I turn and look back at Duncan, he seems so far away. I must be nearly halfway, I think. I tread water for a moment, looking across at my tree.
It hasn’t come any closer. Up out of the sea I rise in a butterfly surge, breathing one, two, three, “It’s easier,” I say to myself, even though I can now feel the tugging(拖、拽)of the outgoing tide, and the salt water slaps my face more than I want.
I must be nearly there, I think, and stop and look back at Duncan. His T-shirt is just a red blur(模糊不清的事物)on the beach. I smile to myself, thinking that not many people would do this swim, but I can. I turn my head to look for my tree.

“Jordi! Wake up!” Father’s voice called from the hallway, and I sat up quickly. The day finally came! The day that I would be a castellar—a tower builder. Mama had breakfast ready. “Are you prepared for your moment of fame?” Papa asked in excitement. My throat was suddenly very dry, and the bread got stuck as I swallowed. Taking a big swig of juice, I put on a smile. “I'm ready” I would do well. I wanted to make him proud.
Here in the eastern part of Spain, casteller groups were very popular. My city hosted the competition this year. Before that, I’d watched my parents compete. But never before had I been part of the tower. It was so high. And it sometimes fell. I was hesitant to be up there. But for the past year, I had been practicing the climb. I was twelve, and I must not be a coward(胆小鬼). So for the first time in a competition, I would help build the tower!
In town, I saw that the center was packed with people and casteller teams from all over the country. Hands sweating, I was waiting for our turn to compete. Mom came and patted me on the shoulder. “Have focus. Have faith.” I nodded to show that I understood and would do my best to follow the suggestions.
Soon, too soon, it was our turn.
My father and three of the strongest men stood in a circle facing each other as they held tightly to each other’s arms. Four more strong men stepped behind, each wrapping his arms around the chest of a man and giving him a bear hug. Then fifty more men and women crowded behind and began pushing on their backs to keep them tightly together.
Our base was solid. Four smaller men climbed onto the backs of the base group and stood on their shoulders. They then grabbed onto each other’s arms and held firmly, creating a strong second tier(层). Another group of men would form the third tier. Then, a group of women, including Mom, started climbing and began to form the fourth tier. Our tower was growing taller and taller.

My writing career started when I was in elementary school, where there were various writing contests throughout the years. I’m assuming it was in the hopes of trying to get our young, little minds excited about the possibilities that writing could offer us in our lives. Then I’d come home, show my parents and my dad would say, “You did such a great job, honey! Wow, you must be a great writer!” I was probably a better writer in 5th grade than my average counterparts(同等的人)at the time. I even went to the special advanced classes for the “gifted” kids for a few years.
And as I grew older, I remembered those experiences and what my dad was always telling me, and it just stuck with me, and became part of my subconscious(潜意识)— that I was a great writer. I always did well in all my classes because I had this confidence. I didn’t like all subjects particularly. but I got good grades. I was pretty self-assured in my abilities as a student. Then, fast forward to my freshman year of high school. By this time, I had started to even out(相等)with the rest of my peers, in terms of intelligence. And then, it happened, the day that my hopes were destroyed.
It was all because of the new English teacher: Ms. Moon. The year started out like any other. I expected to do well; I worked hard and knew that my efforts would pay off, like it always had in the past. But something started happening. I started getting Cs on my papers! I don’t think I’d ever seen that letter, except in the spelling of my first name. And, not only was I getting low grades in her class, but also her comments made me astonished. My papers were full of red marks, and I was being asked to re-do many assignments to even get a passing grade.

“Let’s welcome the new arrival!” said Mrs. White. When Kevin went straight to the blackboard, he overheard his new classmates’ comments. “Look at his shabby and wrinkled sneakers!” He felt his face flushed(脸红). “My name is Ke … vin!” The whole class burst out laughing except one boy in red.
At the thought of the sharp remarks, Kevin felt depressed. All the heartbroken memories crowding in, he was about to sob when he felt a gentle pat on his back. “Hey, my name is Mike,” he said and shook hands with Kevin. Kevin’s face lit up immediately. Soon the two boys became good friends. They found they had a lot in common — both of them liked soccer. From then on, they played soccer every afternoon after school. Unable to afford a ball, Mike made a ball out of old socks bound together with plastic tape.
The sun was shining and the ball was spinning across the grass as the two friends laughed and shouted with joy. Suddenly, the ball stopped when a new sneaker pinned it to the ground. It was Steven. “A stupid ball,” Steven said scornfully(轻蔑地).
The next morning, Kevin received an envelope from his uncle, in which there was a 100-dollar bill. He bought a pair of brand-new shoes and a new soccer ball. The next day, Steven invited Kevin to play soccer on the playground. When Kevin saw Mike sitting on the old bench waiting for him, he hugged his new soccer ball to the chest and ignored his friend. Mike sat there silently, tears rolling down his cheeks.

Okay. I’ll admit it. I can be a complainer. After all, there’s so much in my life that annoys me: my school work, my brother’s dirty shoes, the neighbor’s loud music, rainy days, traffic jams…
Complaining is what I have developed since childhood. My family doesn’t seem to mind. Mom always tries to excuse my behavior as something that I would outgrow, but I do remember some eye-rolling and long-drawn sighs from friends and families when I would voice my negative opinions. In fact, I can clearly recall the exact moment when I first realized my complaining habit deeply hurt people around.
I had a generally pleasant high school life with my usually mild-mannered deskmate Lucy in Senior 2. Sure, there was still plenty to complain about, but she never seemed to mind. Or so I thought. Then, on a hot summer afternoon, we sat in our classroom - no wind, no air conditioning, the sweat messing my hair. Impatiently, I whispered something about the situation under my breath. Probably for the tenth time. Also, I reminded her once again to remove her arms from my table and take her books away, she put up her hand, turned to me and shouted, “Stop! Stop your complaining. It’s driving me crazy.” Her eyes widened. Turning away, she didn’t speak to me for the rest of the day.
Perhaps I’d gone too far, I thought. Maybe I really did complain too much. I took a breath and sat down to think about solutions. I could hide myself in the washing room and scream. No. Other students would probably hear me. Turn to teachers or my family? They probably wouldn’t mind as well. Then it hit me.
I’d been in the habit of keeping a journal. Journaling kept me sort of honest with myself, and I liked it for that reason. Perhaps, I thought, a complaint journal might be the answer I was seeking.

Ryan lost his parents in an accident when he was only two. Since then, his grandma,Elsa, raised him alone, and tried to provide him with everything he needed.
When Ryan was 15, his grandma retired from her company. She had prepared much of her savings for Ryan’s college education, so she just took on a part-time job to cover the daily bills. However, Ryan disliked his grandma’s part-time job. She worked as a cleaning lady at a nearby park and he was afraid one of his classmates would see his grandma and think lowly of them.
One day,Ryan was chosen to act the lead role in a school play. All others acting in the play invited their families to the big opening night, but Ryan was too ashamed to invite his grandma. Unfortunately for him,EIsa saw the flyer(宣传单)of the play while she was cleaning Ryan’s room. That night, when having the dinner in the living room, she talked to Ryan about the flyer, saying she would love to attend.
“You won’t be attending, grandma,” he shouted. Hearing that, Elsa wanted to know why. Finally, Ryan broke, “It’s because I don’t want my friends to find out you’re a cleaning lady!“ Elsa was shocked. She was hurt, and couldn’t find the words to respond to her grandson. Instead, she silently went to her room and cried all night long.
Little did Ryan know — his grandma kept working because of him. If she had the choice, she would rather stay at home and enjoy her retirement, but she knew she had to make money so that Ryan could continue living comfortably. And although Elsa was sad about Ryan’s behavior, she continued working.
Elsa’s legs and back had been experiencing bad pains for long because of her work. And she just secretly took painkillers(止痛药)without telling Ryan about her illness. However, the terrible thing happened. One Sunday morning at home, she found herself unable to stand up.

No two people are exactly alike, and even best friends disagree sometimes.
I still remembered the first time I met Karina at a summer camp, we got along so great. It was as if we’d known each other forever.
I really liked plantain chip(植蕉片), which had little appeal for other kids. So when I noticed some in Karina’s lunchbox as I sat next to her on the first day of the camp, I was surprised. Equally surprised was Karina since plantain chips were her favorite snack.
“Well, then I guess today’s your lucky day,” she said, handing me the bag. “I have a big box that’s taking up space in the cupboard. So, see, you’d actually be helping me out!”
“Well, in that case, thanks!” I laughed. “I am happy to help.”
And right then I knew that Karina and I were meant to be friends forever. Whenever we got to pick a partner at camp, we picked each other. Whenever we had a break, we hung out together. And the more time we spent together, the more we realized how amazingly alike we were. We both had two adorable cats, we both had awesome and sometimes annoying younger brothers, we both liked baking extra-creative cookies, and we both had the same favorite song.
Then something happened. The camp was next to a piece of beautiful land that had a bunch of giant old trees on it. Whenever it was nice out, we’d get to eat our lunch at picnic tables that were right by some of those trees. We’d feed squirrels and play with them. One day when looking up, we spotted large numbers of holes in a trunk, which were made by woodpeckers(啄木鸟)to store nuts. I fell in love with the amazing scene!
But somehow things got different when news came that those giant old trees would be cut down to make room for a shopping center. It was like a stone with its waves and our friendship was on the rocks.

Molly and Maye were good friends, like sisters, not only because they were always in the same class, but also they shared an interest—both of them were crazy about acting.
Before this summer holiday, their school was to hold the annual “School Play”, wanting a whole set of actors. That was their luck. “I’d like to play a role in the show.” Molly told herself.
After reading the notice, she learned that the play was named Rapunzel, who was a magic princess. Another leading role was an evil witch(女巫)stealing Rapunzel to keep herself young forever. Immediately, Molly and Maye were both attracted by the role of princess. Apart from them, there were about twenty other girls interested in this role as well. So an audition(试镜)would be needed to choose the most suitable one.
“Do you really want to play the princess, Maye?” they walked home, arm in arm.
“Yes, a little. And you?” Maye replied.
Long silence...
Several weeks before the audition, they practiced and practiced. With time speeding by, Molly’s confidence grew and she felt happy with her acting.
The morning of the audition arrived at last. Unbelievable! So many students crowded into the school hall to appreciate and witness the moment. Nervous though Molly was, she took a deep breath and recalled what she had practiced. During the audition, she tried her best to present her best self, and she was sure that she could make it.
After an anxiety-filled hour, the result of the audition came out. Molly didn’t even dare to check the result in person. Standing outside the crowd, she heard someone shouting, “Maye is the princess!” What was worse, Molly was shocked to learn that she was given the role of “witch”!

It was my job to watch my younger brother, Jack, and sister, Kelly, as we walked home from school.
“I’m tired,” Kelly whined “and hungry.” “Me too,” added Jack So we stopped to rest. “What do you think Mama is cooking?” I asked. “Noodles!” Kelly said. “Barbecue!” said Jack “Come on.” I stood up. “We need to keep walking.”
At a busy corner, I noticed a street banner, reading “First Walking Race to Jasan Park! Climb the Mountain to Win a Washing Machine.”
It might be fun to race. But could I walk fast enough to win?
At home, Mama was working in the kitchen. We had only a single burner stove, so it often took ages to prepare a meal. Sometimes when father came back from work, Mama was still cooking with the single burner stove.
Afterward, Mama and I washed dishes. When Mama pulled out two metal laundry tubs, her smile disappeared. I knew doing laundry hurt Mama’s back and knees. Mama heated a kettle of water on the single burner stove and filled a tub. She filled the other with cold water. Then kneeling, Mama began scrubbing shirts.
Then we carried the wet laundry to the flat roof, where Mama hung it to dry. On roof tops all over the city, clothes and towels danced in the wind. I loved being on the roof with Mama, but I wished we hadn’t had so much housework. Then I would have had more time to play with friends.
How I wish we would have a washing machine! Both Mama and I would be happy.
I remembered the banner and told Mama about it. Mama sighed, ”Maria, many people will enter that race. You can not expect to win.”
On the race day, I woke up early. I laced up my shoes and put on a head band. Mama kissed the top of my head. “Be careful and be safe. Just keep walking!” Mama said.
At the foot of the mountain, large crowds of people gathered.

It was almost nine o’clock and Sydney returned to Tellson’s Bank to see Mr. Lorry. Monsieur Manette, however, hadn’t returned from his visits. Mr. Lorry was worried. When he did return, his face told them that he had failed to find someone to save Charles. “Where are my bench and my work tools?” he asked. “I must finish those shoes!”
Their heart sank. “The last hope is gone!” said Mr. Lorry shaking his head sadly. “Yes, the last hope is gone,” said Sydney. Then he took a piece of paper from his pocket. It was his Leave Pass, with “Sydney Carton” on it. He gave it to Mr. Lorry, and asked him to keep it for him until the next day because he didn’t want to take it into the prison when visiting Charles. Then he looked in Monsieur Manette’s pockets and found his Leave Pass with his name and the names of Lucie and little Lucie on it.
“Look after these, too,” he said. “They are in great danger. Madame Defarge is going to have them all arrested, probably the day after tomorrow. You must have your horses and carriage ready at two o’clock tomorrow afternoon. Lucie and her father must be sitting in the carriage, and so must you. As soon as I arrive, take me into the carriage and drive off. This is very, very important. We must save them!”
On the next day afternoon, Charles Darnay sat alone in his cell, writing a long letter to Lucie and others to her father and Mr. Lorry. Then he lay down to sleep. He woke early, so he got up and walked up and down in his cell. The guard had told him that he would die at three o’clock. Just after the clock had struck one o’clock, Charles heard footsteps approaching. Then the key turned in the lock, and the door opened. He heard the guard Barsad say, “Go in quickly, and do what you have to do. I will wait here.” The person who entered the room with some hidden chemicals was Sydney Carton, who smiled and put a finger on his lips. Was this really happening?

As he lay awake that night, Tony could hear his parents discussing his sister Alice's birthday. It was just two days away. Birthdays were always a lot of fun, even though there was no money for store-bought gifts. Nearly all the toys he and his sister had were homemade. There was nothing wrong with that, he knew. Like many families in this part, they were poor.
This birthday would be different, though. Alice was older now, and he'd seen how her eyes lit up when she saw the new doll at Honey House, a neighborhood store just down the road from their house.
How he longed for her to have it! An idea finally came to him just before he went to bed. After a quick breakfast the following morning, he placed a tin can and a piece of string in a large bag. Then he tied the bag to the handlebars of his bike and headed toward a village hill.
After a long journey, he reached his destination, the mango forest. There were already two other boys there. Tony grabbed his bag and set to work immediately. The smaller trees had already been picked over pretty well, but he was able to find a half-dozen mangoes before noon.
When the sun was high overhead, the hard work began. Nearly all of the taller trees held ripe mangoes, but they were well beyond reach. The other boys took their fruit and went away. Tony used his pocketknife to cut a long piece of bamboo. Then he took the tin can from the bag, tied it to one end of the bamboo stick, and walked over to the base of the mango tree.
He stayed there, holding the tin can high up into the tree. His efforts were occasionally rewarded when a mango dropped into the can. After a while his neck ached from looking upward, and his arms grew sore. He kept at it, though, and by late afternoon his bag was nearly full.

“I want a friend!” my five-year-old’s clear blue eyes showed the pain of rejection. Noah is deaf, and the past couple of years have begun to show what the future holds for my little guy.
The first few years of his life, Noah had many friends in our neighborhood. Small children don’t talk a lot and are content to simply play. As time passed and Noah got to the age where speech and hearing were a noticeable part of “hanging out”, his friends started realizing he was different. Soon, no one came to play with my tiny son, and he too began to understand he was different. My heart has ached, and I have spent endless hours in tears, begging God to send him a friend. But the children at school come from everywhere, and none live near enough to “hang out” .
Noah recently began the heartbreaking hobby of writing and leaving mail on the porch(门廊)for his “friends” . He sticks his own toys to the notes, thinking that he can somehow make friends this way. I often have to retrieve(取回)his notes so that he thinks someone is getting his messages of friendship. His excited trips to the front porch the next morning would sometimes net him a feeling of having an unseen pen pal. It breaks my heart.
But today was different. I got a miracle—in fact, three of them.
My phone rang, and I was distracted with a long-distance friend, catching up with each other’s lives without noticing Noah slipping out the front door. It wasn’t until Nick, my sixteen-year-old son came home for lunch that Noah’s absence was known. Panic-stricken, Nick and I searched the house, yard, and garage ... no Noah.

Her name was Mrs. Thompson. And as she stood in front of the 5th grade class on the very first day she looked at her students and said that she loved them all the same. But that was impossible because there in the front row was a little boy named Teddy Stoddard. Mrs. Thompson had watched Teddy the year before and noticed that he didn’t play well with the other children, that his clothes were messy and that he constantly needed a bath. She paid no attention to Teddy.
However, when she read his file, she was in surprise. Teddy’s first grade teacher wrote, “Teddy is a bright child with a ready laugh. He does his work neatly and has good manners...he is a joy to be around.’’ His second grade teacher wrote, “Teddy is an excellent student, well liked by his classmates. But he is troubled because his mother has a deadly illness and life at home must be a struggle.” His third grade teacher wrote, “His mother’s death has been hard on him. He tried to do his best but his father doesn’t show much interest.” Teddy’s fourth grade teacher wrote, “Teddy is withdrawn and doesn’t show much interest in school. He doesn’t have many friends and sometimes sleeps in class.” By now, Mrs. Thompson realized the problem and she was ashamed of herself. She thought that she could make a difference.
She felt even worse when her students brought her Christmas presents, wrapped in beautiful paper and tied with pretty ribbons, except for Teddy’s. His present was clumsily wrapped in the heavy, brown paper that he got from a grocery bag. Mrs. Thompson opened it in the middle of the other presents. There lived two brothers, John McNeil and James, in a village in Kentucky in the north of America, who had lost their parents in a terrible earthquake ten years before. Worse still, ten-year-old John McNeil suffered from serious autism. He often stayed at a corner without saying anything with others and frequently ran everywhere, so his brother James was concerned about his safety.
On a windy, cold day, John McNeil forgot to put on his shoes and ran out the door. He headed straight for the 125-foot electrical tower behind the McNeiI home and didn’t realize the dangers of the structure. That day his thoughts were set on climbing to the top of that tower, touching the sky. Maybe he thought he could meet his parents in the sky. What a poor boy!
His seventeen-year-old brother, James, was always close by. James always made sure that no danger came to his little brother. But today was different. Today, John ran out the door unnoticed. He was making his way to the sky step by step by the time James saw him. John, like most autistic children, had no idea about fear or danger. James, on the other hand, realized that he had to face his greatest fear of all — the fear of heights.
However, James understood the danger of the electrical tower but chose to follow his younger brother secretly, trying not to look down, all the way to the top. He finally reached his brother and held him with his right hand. With his left hand, he held a metal bar to help stabilize them both. What a thrilling scene!

My family moved in a small house in Brighton, Colorado on my seventh birthday. My first memory is our neighbor Bill, an old man, handing me strawberries from his garden through a hole in the chain-link fence. “We need to make the hole bigger,” he said jokingly. Later I knew that he lived alone.
Bill spent much time working in the garden, and I was always talking to him from our yard. I was a chatterbox. I think what drew me to Bill is that he never got tired of listening to me. I also think Bill saw a lot of himself in me — we were both lonely and anxious — and that may be why he always took the time to listen to me. It was a wonderful connection.
There weren’t any kids of my age in the neighborhood, and my parents were very busy, so I mostly played in the yard with my dog. I had a lot of imaginary friends — a whole family, actually, with a wife, children, a best friend... no joke. Weird kid.
One day, my parents asked Bill whether he’d watch me while they were away on business. This worked for everyone, so it became a somewhat monthly occurrence. Bill had a spare room in his house, which became “my” room.
Bill promised to teach me to drive the lawn tractor(割草机)someday and I was always looking forward to it. In winter, Bill would attach a snowplow(铲雪机)to the front of the dawn tractor. I seriously told him that I would invent a better snowplow when I grew up. “Sure you will. You’ll get a patent certificate. It takes a certificate to prove an important thing,” Bill said with a smile.
One snowy morning, an idea suddenly hit me. My parents were watching TV when I spit it out, “What if I adopted Bill as my grandpa?” My parents said I could go over and ask him.

(2023-2024学年高二上学期·江苏省响水中学·期末校考)“This Saturday, we’ll be visiting cats at the animal shelter. If you’d like to join us, here’s an application form”, said Ms. Delgado, the school librarian who had held the reading engagement event for students.
Ben loved cats and he had always wanted one, so he hurried to take an application form. Then Ms. Delgado added, “We’ll be reading to the cats and award readers who make most progress.” Ben stopped. Reading al oud can be a challenging task. Ben might feel his heart racing, his palms sweating, and his voice shaking as he read. He might stumble over words or lose his place in the text. He might feel like everyone was watching him and judging him. Still, he really wanted to visit the cats, so he took an application form anyway.
On Saturday, Ben arrived at the shelter with some of his classmates. “This is Max,” the shelter worker told Ben as she handed him a gray cat. Ben carried Max to a beanbag chair and sat down. Max settled onto his lap. He took a book he’d been working on and started reading. Max, very different from other cats walking around the room while the kids read, purred(发出呼噜声)on his lap as if he had understood what Ben read.
“I’m glad Max is staying and listening to my reading and he is the best cat ever,” Ben told Dad excitedly. “I’m glad you two are friends,” Dad said. All week, Ben’s heart was filled with anxiety as he waited for Saturday to arrive. He was eager to read to Max and the anticipation of spending time with his feline(猫咪的)friend made him restless and nervous. When it arrived, Ben got to read to Max again.
“What if someone adopts Max?” Ben asked Dad later. “I guess you’d read to a different cat,” Dad said. “But I don’t want a different cat. I wish we could adopt Max,” Ben said to Dad. He knew they couldn’t because Mom had allergies(过敏). Ben loved the cat so much that he even told his next-door neighbor, Mrs. Patel, about Max. “Max sounds like a special cat,” said Mrs. Patel.

(2023-2024学年高二上学期·连云港市·期末统考)阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
It all started at tea-time. Mrs. Bendall, Dicky’s mother, and Mrs. Spears, who was spending the afternoon with her, were quietly sitting and sewing(做针线活)in the drawing room. The children were eating their bread and butter nicely and quietly, and the servant girl had just poured out the milk and water, when Dicky suddenly took the bread plate, put it upside down on his head, and held the bread knife tightly.
“Look at me!” he shouted.
His shocked sisters looked, and before the servant girl could get there, the bread plate shook, slid to the floor and broke into small pieces. At this awful point the little girls lifted up their voices and shouted their loudest.
“Mother, come and look what he’s done!”
“Dicky’s broken a great plate!”
“Come and stop him, mother!”
Can you imagine how mother came running? But she was too late. Dicky had jumped out of his chair, run through the window on to the veranda(走廊), and, well—there she stood—helpless. What could she do? She couldn’t chase after the child. She couldn’t hunt for Dicky through the apple trees. That would be undignified(不 体面的).
“Very well, Dicky, ” she cried, “I shall have to think of some way of punishing you.”
Seeing this, Mrs. Spears said, “Oh, my dear. I’m sure you make a great mistake in trying to bring up children without beating them. Nothing really takes its place.” “Believe me. There is nothing like handing the naughty kid to his father,” she added.
Mrs. Bendall, deep inside, was terribly shocked to hear the advice. But Mrs. Spears seemed to take it as a normal thing, so she did it too.
The children had gone to bed before Dicky’s father Edward came back. Mrs. Bendall rushed to him, “You have to beat Dicky.”
“But why on earth should I start beating him?” responded Edward. “We’ve never done it before.”

Dear friends,
As a high school student, I am deeply concerned about the destruction of cultural heritage around the world. Human activities such as war, urbanization, and tourism have damaged many cultural sites, and we risk losing them forever. It is time for us to take action and protect our global heritage.
The incredible splendour of heritage sites is a reminder of the power of nature and the genius of man. It is in places like Jiuzhaigou Valley that we cannot help but be humbled, come to understand our limitations as human beings, and know that our duty is to protect them for future generations. Besides, heritage sites provide us with opportunities to wonder, to be inspired and to think more deeply about our time on the Earth.
As Cicero remarked, “To be ignorant of what occurred before you were born is to remain always a child.” Let us work together to protect it for future generations.
Yours sincerely,

Dear James,
Recently, I have a keen interest in genome editing, but I still have some doubts and I’m writing to compare notes with you.
Genome editing, serving as a new weapon against diseases, will lead to a fundamental change in health care. Experts may use it to increase the human resistance to some diseases, to sharpen people’s senses or to make them more intelligent.
However, the widespread use of gene editing brings some moral issues and consequences. What if it is used improperly by those who seek fame and money? Most terribly, it is likely to create genetic viruses, weapons or even the so-called “Frankenstein monster”.
I would sincerely be grateful if you could share with me your understanding.

The new skill I acquired during the vacation is cooking. Previously, I thought cooking was dull. As a result, I kept finding all kinds of excuses to avoid it. However, with the encouragement and guidance of my parents. I learnt Kung Pao chicken after going through a series of trials and errors. 【答案1】
Dear Ryan,
I am Li Hua from Grade 2, a participant in the last continuation writing competition. Having scored only 14 for my continuation writing, I felt it unfair, so I am writing to you to state my reasons.
For my writing, I felt it totally meets the requirements put forward in the contest. To begin with, the structure of my composition is definitely clear and the plot develops reasonably, no prolixity at all. Additionally, the words and sentences used are colorful, without repeatedly using the same word. I even wrote some compound sentences to update my writing, such as attributive clause, the emphatic pattern, inverted sentence and so on. Finally, a well-known saying is used to end my article, which I think is a perfect highlight of the passage.
In a word, with the merits mentioned above, I wonder why I got such a low score. If it is convenient for you, please give me an explanation.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
【答案2】
Dear Ryan,
I am Li Hua from Grade 2, a participant in the last continuation writing competition. I received a score of 14 out of 25, and I believe this score is unreasonably low.
Firstly, I carefully followed the guidelines and requirements of the competition. I made sure to address the given topic and structure my writing appropriately. Secondly, I also paid attention to grammar, vocabulary, and coherence in my composition. Therefore, I believe my writing should have been evaluated more favorably.
In conclusion, I feel that my score of 14 does not accurately represent my writing abilities. I kindly request you to reconsider my score and provide me with a fair evaluation.
Thank you for your attention to this matter. I look forward to your prompt response.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua

Be a critical news reader
Good morning, everyone!
In this age of information explosion, it’s important to be able to tell facts from fictions. Being a critical reader prevents us from being misled by false information.
To become a critical news reader, we should develop a habit of questioning. We must ask ourselves who wrote the article, what their background is, and what their prejudices might be. We should also examine the evidence presented in the article and consider its reliability.
Let’s enjoy critical reading and become a master of information rather than fall slave to it.

Then Gail’s first birthday after the transplant was approaching and she got an idea. She called Paul and invited him to her birthday party. When he refused, she was very angry. “You’ve given me a second life. How can you refuse to come to my birthday party? It would be meaningless without you,” she said to Paul. Amazingly, Gail’s words did work! Paul knew she was talking to him from the bottom of her heart. So he accepted the invitation and they finally met at Gail’s birthday party.
Their friendship started after the birthday party. Now they meet every few weeks, sharing each other’s concerns, feelings and experiences. And they spare no effort to offer help whenever one of them is in trouble. “I found someone I didn’t know who was willing to give the priceless gift. How could I not be his friend?” said Gail. “I lost a kidney, but I’ve gained a true friend. It’s worth it,” said Paul, smiling at the memory. There’s no doubt that it’s great love and kindness that create the true friendship between the two strangers.

【答案】
Just then Terry asked me if we could gather all the girls and work with them together. We? Was she kidding? I just wanted to hate her and she kept making it harder and harder for me to do that. It wasn’t just that she showed interest in me—her interest was warm and genuine. Terry always made sure to include me when discussing changes in our routine and eventually I overcame myself and we grew to be very close friends.
At the end of the year, the Annual Sports Award Ceremony was held to honor the valuable players and cheerleaders. We decorated the hall, talking about all the good times we had shared during our last year together. Later in the evening we arrived and listened as the various trophies were awarded to the most valuable player of each sports team. Just as Terry walked off the stage, Coach Maguire stepped up to the microphone again and announced that there was one final trophy to be awarded. The cheerleading “Spirit Award” would now be presented to the girl who showed the most dedicated effort. When I heard my name announced I imagined I was as shocked Terry was coming toward me. We hugged each other, and Terry whispered, “Nobody deserves this more than you.”

【答案】
Dale was skeptical we'd find anyone, but we set out for Ghost Island. As we drew closer, the old camp came into view, partially obscured by pine trees. After tying up to the dock, we followed an overgrown trail that led to the cabin. “Hello?” I called. “Anybody home?” A voice from inside made us jump. “Yes! Please, I need help!” We pushed the door open. An elderly man lay on a couch with one foot elevated. He leaned back and sighed. “Thank goodness.” “Mr. Mori?” Dale said. The man nodded. “I was taking a picture when I accidentally dropped my phone into the lake and twisted my ankle.”Frowning, he looked at the badly swollen joint. “So you sent a distress signal with your porch light?” I asked.
Mr Mori gestured to a wall switch and managed a weak smile. “Good detective work. Where did you learn Morse Code?”“Boy Scouts,” I said. “I learned it to earn one of my merit badges.” “Coast Guard for me. I'm glad somebody still teaches it.”Dale called Dad, who arrived shortly after that with two marine patrol officers. They moved Mr. Mori on to a boat and took him across the lake, where an ambulance was waiting. “Will you be back next summer?” Dale asked. “You'll know where to find me,” Mr Mori said. With a wink, he added, “I'll leave a light on for you.”

We finally reached the kitchen, where the smoke was thick. Panic surged through me as I realized there was a fire. In the chaos, Pepe, normally so lively, stood by my side, his eyes reflecting a mix of concern and loyalty. It was then that I understood the true bond that had formed between us. Ignoring my earlier hesitations, I knew I had to act swiftly. The fire was spreading, and the situation demanded quick thinking.
I turned off the burner(炉子)and crawled to open the back door. Pepe, sensing the urgency, nudged my hand as if encouraging me to move faster. The smoke was suffocating, but Pepe's presence gave me the strength to persevere. Together, we stumbled out into the fresh air, gasping for breath. As the firefighters arrived to tackle the blaze, I couldn’t help but feel grateful for Pepe. He had not only softened my initial resistance but also proved to be an unexpected hero. From that day forward, our connection deepened, and I learned that sometimes, true companionship comes in unexpected forms.

【答案】
I decided to accept her transfer to my unit and her performance surprised me a lot. What started out as a shy, withdrawn and frightened employee turned out to be one of the most productive and loyal employees that I had ever worked with. Maria couldn’t do enough and was constantly asking for more and more responsibility. I was more than happy to give her what she needed — praise for work well done, respect as a person, and encouragement for doing well in anything she dealt with.
I thought a lot about what had happened and several days later, I had a talk with the manager. I told the manager how outstanding the employee was, as well as my opinion. “Perhaps it is self-reflection instead of always finding fault with others that makes sense,” I suggested. “To tell the truth,” I continued, “sometimes, we are guilty of holding others back from accomplishing or developing as they should or could. It may be a wise idea that we often stand in others’ shoes and reflect on what we are doing.” The manager stood still seemingly with a thoughtful expression, his cheeks a little red.

But something was wrong. The tree is as far away as ever. It’s still a fuzzy outline on the sandbank. And the tide has pulled me toward the open sea. Then beside me is a silver flash. A flip into the water like a stone throw. Plop. And again. Would a fish know if there was a shark around? Would it be showing off in the water like that, flipping up and down?
My heart stops pounding(心脏怦怦跳)in my ears so much. My arms and legs settle down. One, two, three. I count my breathing. I think of how much bigger and stronger I am. I think of all the lengths I do and training at the swimming pool. I want to be back at home. I want to be sitting under that tree with Duncan, bathed in the sun. Suddenly the water is warmer. I stretch one foot down, and surge out of the water, arms up high. There’s the sand. I made it!

【答案】
Then suddenly it was kids’ turn to make the last tier. Tightly gripping the clothing of those we were climbing over, we passed the first two tiers without difficulty. By the time I reached the fourth tier, nerves made my hands sweat and my knees tremble, for I was very high off the ground. As I climbed onto my mother’s shoulders, my foot slipped off and I slid down. Instinctively, I clutched Mom’s arm with all my might. Feeling the tower below swaying a bit, my heart began a crazy dance in my chest. “Stay focus!” Exclaimed a kid beside me. Sweat trickling down my face, I took a deep breath to calm myself. I could not be responsible for ruining our tower. I could not disgrace my parents or myself. I could not let my team down.
“Jordi. Easy!” My mother whispered the words. I calmed my heart and again placed my foot on Mom’s lap. This time, I grasped her shirt and firmly pushed myself to a stand, balancing on one foot. With the other foot, I stepped up and onto her shoulders, and then brought the other foot up. Reaching deep inside to feel my balance, with focus and trust, I rose slowly out of my crouch and straightened my knees. I worked hard to hold myself straight and still until our tower was complete. Whether or not we won this competition, I knew we had done what we had set out to do. With faith in each other and with focus on the task, we built our tower. Eventually, I became a casteller!

My efforts paid off and very soon it was time for my final exam result. _____________________________

【答案】
One day, Ms. Moon handed my paper to me and whispered, “It’s still not good enough.” I stared at Ms. Moon in disbelief, her words crashing over me like a tidal wave. My confidence began to crumble, and it was as if all those years of praise and encouragement from my dad had been a lie. Unable to confront Ms. Moon, I slumped back to my seat. My mind was clouded with self-doubt. With the approaching final exam, I knew I had to pull myself together and stick to it persistently, for the sake of proving to myself that I could face this challenge.
My efforts paid off and very soon it was time for my final exam result. When I nervously waited for my result, I became lost in thought. Finally, Ms. Moon handed me my exam paper, and her expression was unreadable. What amazed me was that the paper was filled with praise. Ms. Moon smiled and said, “That was beyond my expectations. Well done.” A mixture of confusion and relief flooded over me. From that day on, I changed my attitude toward her. Although she may have been the “worst” English teacher in my eyes, I now know that her tough love was exactly what I needed.

【答案】
One day as Kevin walked past the old bench, he saw the home-made ball under it with a note. He picked up the note and read, “Kevin, remember the fun we had playing with this ball? It doesn’t matter what kind of ball we use, as long as we enjoy playing together. Don’t let a new soccer ball or a pair of new shoes change our friendship. Let’s play soccer together again!” Kevin looked at the home-made ball and felt a pang of guilt. He realized that he had been too caught up in his own excitement and had forgotten about the true value of their friendship.
Holding the home-made ball, Kevin sat on the bench and waited. Soon, Mike appeared with a smile on his face. “Kevin, I’m sorry if I made you feel uncomfortable yesterday,” Mike said. Kevin looked at him and smiled. “It’s me who should apologize. I forgot about the true meaning of our friendship.” The two boys hugged each other and began to play with the home-made ball. Kevin realized that it didn’t matter what they had or didn’t have; it was the shared experiences and the bond of friendship that truly mattered.

【答案】
That night, I sat down in front of my desk and gave it a try. When I took the pen, the upsetting moment with Lucy flashed across my mind again. I poured my complaint out onto the page, detailing her every single annoying behaviour. However, as I wrote, a sense of guilt crept up on me. It dawned on me that she always put up with my complaints. I began to reflect on myself and mend my own way. It is my complaint that affects the life of people around me.
I made up my mind to apologize to Lucy the next day. Immediately I met her, I said sorry to her, told her my regret and determination to change and asked her to remind me when I complained. She accepted my apology and agreed. Open to each other, we would make a fresh start. Writing down the complaint words lifted my weight from my shoulders and left me more time to reflect on myself. Gradually, I found my words changed, and my life changed as well.

【答案】
Soon, Ryan found it and rushed her to the hospital. Worried and anxious, Ryan waited restlessly outside the emergency room. After what seemed an endless wait, the door opened. Out came the doctor and EIsa in a wheelchair, Ryan was informed Elsa’s illness was just a result of overwork. Luckily, it wasn’t deadly. Ryan let out a sigh of relief. At that moment, memories came flooding back. He recalled everything Grandma had done for him. Realizing Elsa was hiding her pain, he felt regretful about his previous hurtful words.
Ryan decided to say sorry to grandma. Turning to her, he knelt down, grasping her hand, and apologized sincerely to her, “Sorry, grandma. I shouldn’t have shouted like that.” Elsa just smiled and comforted him. Days after Elsa felt better, Ryan surprised her by taking her to his school. She was seated in the front row of the school hall. “My performance is for my selfless, hardworking and loving grandma!” Ryan said before they started the play. A wave of applause echoed in the hall, and Elsa was proudly in tears.

【答案】
We disagreed with each other and had a heated argument. “That’s terrible! We have to stop that,” I said, with images of fallen trees and homeless squirrels springing to mind. Hearing what I said, Karina, looking me in the eye, insisted that a shopping center meant new jobs and that people were more important than trees. Neither of us could convince the other. “You know,” Karina said super seriously, “maybe we’re not quite as alike as we thought.” I sighed sadly. Maybe two people with opposite points of view just were not meant to be friends, I was thinking.
Several days later, again we were asked to pick a partner. I cast a look towards Katrina, naturally and unconsciously. When our eyes met, a feeling of relief and happiness welled up inside our hearts. We ended up having more fun at the camp. And even now, a couple of months later, we still send each other crazy pictures of our cats or our baking creations. Now I understand that no two people are exactly alike, and even best friends can sometimes disagree. What’s important is that we respect each other and agree to disagree. Unless a friend does things that are hurtful or mean, a friendship is almost always worth keeping.

【答案】
Molly rushed home and burst out crying when her mother came. After her mom knew about everything, she smiled, “Dear, why not try your best to make witch impressed? Maybe you are the best.” Molly jerked up her head as if awake from a dream. She kissed her mother in gratitude and got ready immediately. She carefully analyzed the witch’s personality traits, body language, consulted professionals, and looked up information about the relevant characters. As she learned more, her confidence grew gradually.
A few days later, the big day for the play arrived. The performance was a great success. Molly’s performance as the witch was as impressive as Maye’s as the princess, and the applause from the audience continued, which made Molly cry with joy. And her friend Maye also hugged her deeply and whispered, “If I had played a witch, I might not be as good as you.” Molly also understands a truth: no matter what role you play, as long as it is taken seriously, it will make people impressed.
