We’re excited to hit the road with you!

They also come in a variety of lengths and difficulties as well as different levels of support and price points. We offer everything from self-sufficient nights under the stars to inn-to-inn options.
Every tour comes with knowledgeable tour leaders, routes, navigation and reservations. All you have to do is participate! Some tours provide opportunities to get to know your fellow riders better, such as group-made meals and grocery shopping, while other types of tours are less interactive. Participation in these small group activities is all part of the adventure cycling experience.

From the moment we wake up and check the messages on our smartphones, we’re exposed to text design. Throughout our day, storefronts and websites announce themselves through the typefaces (字体) they use. Adonian Chan, a 33-year-old Hong Kong graphic designer, calls the different texts a “visual landscape”.
In his hometown, signs written in traditional Chinese characters can be found around every comer. One calligraphy style, above all, has come to represent Hong Kong: Beiwei Kaishu, which has its origins in 4th-century China. After World War II, Beiwei Kaishu was used widely in Hong Kong signs, partly because it is highly recognizable, even from far distances.
But with the appearance of LED signs and computer-generated typefaces, signs written in the style were disappearing from Hong Kong. As a result, few designers working today are aware of the Beiwei Kaishu style.
In 2016, Chan asked a master of calligraphy in Hong Kong to teach him to write in the Beiwei Kaishu style. He then started the process of digitizing the characters. He first wrote the characters on paper with a brush and ink. Next, he made a pencil sketch (草图). Finally, he recreated the characters digitally, using a computer program called Glyphs.
One of the main challenges when digitizing the ancient calligraphy is striking a balance between the artistic expression and the need of design, says Chan. He can complete two characters a day, depending on their complexity, and is aiming to digitize 6,000 characters.
Chan says his project is more than preserving a centuries-old writing style and that he sees himself as building on the work of previous generations. He has named his typeface Beiwei Zansyu and hopes it will eventually appear on phones and computers.
4. Why was Beiwei Kaishu popular in Hong Kong after World War II?
A. It had a long history. B. It could be seen clearly.
C. It was a symbol of Hong Kong. D. It fitted in the “visual landscape”.
5. What leads to the disappearance of Beiwei Kaishu?
A. Its pattern. B. Urban development.
C. Its designers. D. New technologies.
6. What can we infer from the last two paragraphs?
A. Beiwei Zansyu will be available soon.
B. Beiwei Zansyu looks great on the phone.
C. Chan’s project is time-consuming.
D. Preserving the ancient style is Chan’s only purpose.
7. Which is the best title for the text?
A. Digitizing Tradition: Adonian Chan’s Journey with Beiwei Zansyu
B. Hong Kong’s Visual Landscape: Beiwei Kaishu in Signs
C. A Disappearing Typeface: Lost Art in the age of Technologies
D. Calligraphy Grisis Technology Saved Art

Do you ever wonder about what the term “locally-grown food” means? Do you wonder where your food comes from? Locally-grown food and sustainability are on the rise, and it’s important to know why this trend in farming matters.
Hawaii, in particular, is a pretty isolated place. About 85 percent of food is imported. Much of what gets to their table depends on what comes to use by ship. Sometimes, one notices there is no milk or other product left at the grocery story because there is a problem with a barge (驳船).
Steven Chiang, a professor from University of Hawaii, pointed out that in Hawaii, the cost of labor is high for people who might want to farm the land. Since many different groups or individuals own small pieces of land, getting access to farmland is also difficult.
However, Chiang added, “there are many benefits to growing food locally on the islands and elsewhere.” For one, they can hold onto traditions and the types of food they like. Food in soil will have the chance to mature more, and maybe absorb more nutrition. Areas of land that might be used for other things, like new apartment or office buildings, can be preserved. Also, plants can extract the carbon dioxide in the air, benefiting the environment.
Chiang said that there was more to locally-grown food than just those benefits. “Having local food helps make people aware of where their food comes from,” he said. When people are disconnected from the food system and don’t know where their food comes from, there’s a tendency to make potentially negative choices. “Because we’re so efficient at shipping and importing,” he added, “We don’t realize or know what it takes, and that can lead to poor decisions that can harm us all.”
So what can you do? In Hawaii, there are many opportunities to volunteer at local farms. But in other areas around the world, you can do your part by supporting and buying locally-grown food. You can also help spread awareness by educating your friends and family. You can even grow your own food—in a container in your kitchen or in your backyard!
8. What can be inferred about Hawaii’s food supply?
A. Hawaii relies heavily on imported food.
B. Hawaii’s cost of living is low for farmers.
C. Hawaii’s grocery stores are often short of milk.
D. Hawaii’s farmland is enough for all local needs.
9. Which is a benefit of growing food locally?
A. Lowering the cost of local labor.
B. Increasing the variety of imported food.
C. Preserving land for non-agricultural use.
D. Offering quick access to imported food.
10. What is Chiang’s attitude towards locally-grown food?
A. Negative. B. Doubtful.
C. Undecided. D. Favorable.
11. What is the author’s purpose of writing the last paragraph?
A. To encourage gardening at home.
B. To advocate sustainable practices.
C. To promote local farming in Hawaii.
D. To discourage buying imported food.
D
“Tie an Italian’s hands behind his back, and he’ll be speechless.” This old joke conveys a rigid image of Italians: they are talkative and emotional, and all their arm movements supposedly go to prove it.
Susan Goldin-Meadow of the University of Chicago has a rather different view. Emotions come out in lots of ways: facial expressions, posture, tone of voice and so on. But people are doing something different when they use gestures with speech, which she sums up in the title of her new book, “Thinking With Your Hands”.
In fact, everyone gestures, not just Italians. Conference interpreters gesture in their little rooms, though no one is looking. People born blind gesture when they speak, including to each other. All this suggests that cognition (认知) is, to some extent, “embodied (具体化)”, thinking is not all done in your head. Gestures that accompany speech are a second channel of information. People who say they believe in gender equality (男女平等) but gesture with their hands lower are not indicating women’s shorter height; they can be shown to have prejudices (偏见) of which they may not be aware.
Child development is the focus of Goldin-Meadow’s book. Some students who fail at a difficult mathematics problem may gesture in a way that indicates they are on the point of understanding it. They should be taught differently from the ones whose gestures suggest that they are entirely at sea. Goldin-Meadow believes that gesturing could play a larger role in education by addressing the student’s needs better.
This is well explained in the book’s last section. Teachers are encouraged both to use gestures themselves and to observe those their students make. Parents are taught to fill in the word a child is most likely to be missing when they gesture rather than adding information. Children with language delays caused by brain injuries at birth, but who gesture as much as their peers (同龄人), are likely to catch up verbally by the age of about 30 months. Those who gesture less are more likely to need early intervention.
12. Why is the joke mentioned in the first paragraph?
A To show that Italians are talkative and emotional.
B. To set a humorous tone for this article.
C. To illustrate the relationship between gestures and speech.
D. To correct people’s wrong impression of Italians.
13. What does the author want to say by mentioning people talking about gender equality?
A. People’s gestures show the meaning of people’s speech.
B. Gestures help the speaker tell lies more easily.
C. People use gestures to hide their real intentions.
D. Gestures can express what the speaker really thinks.
14. What do the underlined words “at sea” mean in paragraph 4?
A. Nervous. B. Confused. C. Incapable. D. Frightened.
15. What does Goldin-Meadow offer in the last section of her book?
A. Practical advice. B. Educational theory.
C. Reliable proofs. D. Research conclusions.

Jane was still sleeping when the phone rang in the living room. She opened her sleepy eyes and looked at the clock on the table. It was already nine o’clock! Although Jane was still very sleepy, she knew she had to get up because her mother was working in her office and she couldn’t expect her younger brother Tom, who was sleeping like a pig, to answer the Phone. She quickly put on a coat and ran to the living room. When she picked up the receiver, on the other end came the warm greeting, “Good morning!”
It was from her father, who was a seaman and rarely came back. Suddenly, Jane’s sleepiness disappeared.
Born in a not-so-rich family, Jane and Tom felt the stress of life, but they were happy to enjoy the family atmosphere. At school, they were straight-A students and took part in various after-school activities. They were the pride of the family.
“Good morning, Dad. Why do you call us so early on the weekend?” Jane said and pretended to be annoyed. “Tom and I have been very nice recently.” “My dear, today is your mother’s birthday, and I have ordered a cake online and it will be sent to our home late in the afternoon. Do remember to take the cake. It is my surprise for your mother.”
Hearing her father’s words, Jane felt a little ashamed. How could she forget her mother’s birthday?!
While she was chatting with her father, Jane looked around the room and saw a lot of dirty clothes on the sofa. The floor hadn’t been cleaned for a few days since her mother had to work all this week.
She looked at the clock again and was sure that she still had enough time to prepare a surprise for her mother.
“Well, Dad, now I’m going to wake Tom up. We will give Mum a surprise, too!” Jane said and hung up the telephone.

【答案】Hi, everyone!
Today I want to share our planting plan for the vegetable plot assigned to our class.
Our plan focuses on creating a diverse and sustainable garden. Firstly, we will grow a variety of vegetables such as tomatoes, carrots and peppers. These vegetables are nutritious and widely enjoyed by people. Secondly, we will implement companion planting to maximize space and minimize pests. Lastly, we will use organic compost and practice water conservation techniques for a healthier and ecofriendly garden.
Our planting plan combines diversity, sustainability, and organic practices to create a productive and environmentally friendly vegetable garden. We are sure to make it an educational and rewarding experience.
Thank you for your attention.

【答案】One possible version:
Jane hurried to Tom’s room and shared her plan with him. Having learned about the details, Tom volunteered to clean the floor. It took him more than two hours to clean every corner in the house. For the first time, Tom realized how hard it had been for his mother and sister to keep the house clean. While Tom was working, Jane washed the dirty clothes and decorated the room with colorful balloons. When the cake arrived, everything was ready for the big moment.
“Happy birthday, Mum!” Jane and Tom shouted when their mother opened the door. Seeing the beautifully decorated room and the big cake on the table, their mother seemed to be very confused and surprised. After Tom and Jane told her what had happened, she could hardly hide her excitement and hugged them tightly. “It is the best birthday gift I have ever had!” said their mother, who then took out her smartphone and made a video. “We should share this surprise with your father!”
