Now, he’s spreading his love of nature across south London. Markov grew up on Bougainville Island, Papua New Guinea, and learned to love nature in these tropical zones. In 2007, he moved to Lewisham, southeast London, to work as a teacher. Unfortunately, he was diagnosed with heart failure in 2010. During the treatment and recovery, he read about a local award for the best garden, and though he only had a front garden outside his flat, he thought the competition would be something to work towards. He worked on his patch for most of the year, planting seeds and plants, such as flowers, berries and herbs. Surprisingly, he won the best front garden prize. “I couldn’t believe it,” he says. “I nearly fell off my seat.” That was the start. Markov created a community nursery (苗圃) at the side of his house, and started planting bushes across the road. “I had so much beauty in my garden,” he says. “I wanted to share what I had.” He started offering guide to others. News of Markov’s green-fingered selflessness began to spread. “I go to someone’s property and give them advice on how to plant a garden,” he says. He delivers cuttings and seeds and helps people report plants, but everything he does is free. To date, Markov has helped six neighborhoods embrace sustainable gardening. He wants to show people you don’t have to live in the country to create beauty. “It doesn’t matter how much space you have. Outside my place there’s a tiny square, tiny. I grow tomatoes there for my supper. The opportunities are endless.” Gardening gives Markov “the feeling of creating something from nothing and so much pleasure”. His dream is to create more green areas. Markov is making this corner of southeast London a paradise for all. 4. What can be inferred about Markov in paragraph 2? A. He worked as a gardener. B. He turned out a green finger. C. He won an education prize. D. He failed in the competition. 5. Which can best describe Markov according to paragraph 3? A. Generous and warm-hearted. B. Humorous and energetic. C. Smart and courageous. D. Confident and diligent. 6. What may Markov agree with about gardening? A. Selflessness values a lot. B. Skilled techniques are needed. C. Much space is important. D. Desire to take action matters. 7. What will Markov do next? A. Create more pleasure. B. Live in the country. C. Make a paradise for people. D. Found more gardens. C Researchers concerned with space exploration say they have discovered new evidence that Mars once had a large northern ocean. The discovery adds to existing evidence that the ancient Mars had the right conditions to possibly support some form of life. Today, any water on Mars is believed to be in the form of ice because of the planet’s extremely cold desert temperatures. But there is a rich amount of evidence suggesting that rivers, lakes and even oceans once existed on Mars. A study by the American space agency NASA suggested that about 4.3 billion years ago, Mars likely had an ocean that covered nearly half of Mars’ northern hemisphere(半球). Another NASA-supported study guessed that about 3 billion years ago, the climate in much of the planet’s northern hemisphere was very similar to today’s Earth. The study noted that at that time, Mars likely had a much thicker atmosphere than today and had an active northern ocean. Two American researchers recently released a set of maps to provide new environmental evidence of a large ancient ocean on Mars’ low-lying northern hemisphere. The team collected data from satellite images and photos of Mars. They then combined them to create maps of the planet’s northern hemisphere. Using the maps, the researchers were able to piece together evidence of shorelines that sat at the edge of a huge body of water about 3.5 billion years ago. The researchers published their findings in the Journal of Geophysical Research: Planets. Benjamin Cardenas, an assistant professor at The Penn State University, was a co- writer of the study. He said the study’s findings showed the possible ocean in that area of Mars was changeable and interesting. “It was dynamic ( 动 态 的 ) . The sea level rose significantly, ” he said. “Rocks were being deposited (沉积) along its basins at a fast rate. There was a lot of change happening here. ”Besides, Cardenas suggested the new study also provided useful information on Mars’ ancient climate and developmental history. “Based on these findings, we know there had to have been a period when it was warm enough and the atmosphere was thick enough to support this much liquid water at one time, ” he said. 8. How does the author develop paragraph 2? A By drawing comparisons. B. By giving examples. C. By listing figures. D. By asking questions. 9. What does paragraph 3 mainly tell us about the researchers? A. How they found the evidence. B. Where they created maps. C. Why they studied satellites. D. When they landed on Mars. 10. What did the new study find about Mars? A. It must have been always warm. B. It might have had an active ocean. C. The climate and sea level were unchangeable. D. The atmosphere was too thin to support water. 11. Which section of a magazine is the text most probably taken from? A. Science. B. Photography. C. Literature. D. Farming. D Human experts spend years roasting and tasting coffee from many places to learn about the beans. They might then combine (混合) a coffee bean from Africa with another one from South America to come up with a new blend (混合). But, a coffee roasting company in Helsinki, Finland is hoping that artificial intelligence, or AI, can help ease the workload. Kaffa Roastery recently brought out its “AI-conic” blend at the Helsinki Coffee Festival. The blend is a mixture of four kinds of beans, including Fazenda Pinhal from Brazil. It is the result of a joint project by Kaffa and Elev, a local AI business. Svante Hampf is the founder of Kaffa Roastery. He and his partners wanted to do an experiment to see what blend the computer would produce. “We basically gave descriptions of all our coffee types and their flavours to AI and instructed it to create a new exciting blend,” Hamp f said. The “AI-conic” blend combined beans from Brazil, Colombia, Ethiopia and Guatemala. It is described as “a well-balanced blend of sweetness and ripe fruit”. Hampf said he thought the combination was “somewhat weird”. He was surprised that the AI programme chose to make the blend out of four different kinds of beans. Most humans choose only two or three beans. However, after the first blind test of the new blend, Kaffa’s coffee experts agreed that the AI-assisted blend was perfect. There was no need to change. Elev’s Antti Merilehto said “AI-conic” is an example of “how AI can introduce new viewpoint to experienced professionals”. The International Coffee Organization says that the 5.6 million people in Finland drink the most coffee per person in the world. And the roasters at Kaffa said they hope the AI project will help to bring more things to the strong coffee culture in the country. Hamp f called it a “first step”, adding, “I think AI has plenty to offer us in the long run. We are particularly impressed of the coffee taste descriptions it created.” 12. What is the function of Paragraph 1? A. To point out a problem. B. To present a finding. C. To introduce the topic. D. To call for a decision. 13. What can we learn about the “AI-conic” blend? A. It is now in mass production. B. It comes in a variety of fruit flavours. C. It is sweeter than other coffee. D. It combines beans from four countries. 14. What does the underlined word “weird” in Paragraph 4 probably mean? A. Strange. B. Great. C. Ordinary. D. Strong. 15. What is the best title for the text? A. AI Robots Help Make Perfect Coffee B. I still remember how the very first speech that I gave changed my life more than I could have ever imagined. When I was in sixth grade, my teacher, Mrs Lin, encouraged me to sign up for the school speech contest. I was pretty bad at the rehearsal (排练). I felt quite nervous and afraid of failure. Therefore, after class, I ran to the office to find Mrs Lin. Hearing what I said, Mrs Lin sounded puzzled. “You’ve put your heart and soul into practicing it all these past few weeks.” “Yes,” I wanted to say. All I had dreamed of was to represent my school on that stage and be the best public speaker ever. Instead, I whispered, “I messed up big time at rehearsal today. I…I’ve been messing up regularly... a lot. I want to quit.” My words came fast on each other’s heels. “Can you tell the judges I’ve been seriously ill, please?” I sounded hopeless. Mrs Lin was quiet for several moments. “Making up lies is not how we solve problems, Lucy,” she finally said. “You are not the person to shy away from a challenge.” I nodded uncertainly. Then she took out a book about Phoenix. She hoped that Phoenix could give me courage. During reading, Phoenix’s story of bravery and her fight for education fascinated me. Her determination and courage in the face of challenges deeply moved me. Inspired by her story, I decided that my speech would be about Phoenix and the importance of education for everyone. As the day of the contest approached, I was still struggling with my fears. I knew I had to overcome them, not just for myself but also for the message I wanted to convey through Phoenix’s story. I decided to take a different approach to my preparation. I started by researching more about Phoenix, her life, her struggles, and her devotion to education. During this process, I also sought feedback from Mrs Lin. She listened attentively to my drafts and offered constructive comments. Her guidance was invaluable, helping me to shape a speech that was not only informative but also emotionally rich. 注意: 1.续写词数应为150个左右; 2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 The day of the contest arrived and I stood in front of my schoolmates, my heart racing. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Thanks to Mrs Lin, my dream was coming true. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 听力1~5 BAACB 6~10 CBBCC 11~15 ACCAB 16~20 ACABA 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$ 2024—2025学年度上学期高一年级二调考试 英语试卷 全卷满分150分。 How much is the shirt? 【答案】4. A. By drawing comparisons. C. Literature. D. Farming. 【答案】8. B 9. A 10. B 11. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】 The day of the contest arrived and I stood in front of my schoolmates, my heart racing. The lecture hall was filled with students and teachers. As I began to speak, I saw encouraging smiles from Mrs Lin and my friends, which gave me the confidence to continue. I talked about Phoenix’s amazing journey, her challenges, and her great devotion to education. I described how, despite the challenges she faced, Phoenix continued to work hard. I concluded my speech by encouraging everyone to take inspiration from Phoenix and to strive for a better future through working hard. At last, my speech was met with loud applause. Thanks to Mrs Lin, my dream was coming true. I not only won the contest but also got closer to my dream. I knew that without Mrs Lin, I would not have been successful. I made a promise to myself: to carry forward the lessons of courage that Mrs Lin had given. I would use my voice to empower others, to echo the stories that needed to be told, and to honor the guider who had set me on this path. The journey had just begun, and I was ready to embrace it with open arms and an open heart. 3. 词汇激活: 行为类: ①充满:be filled with/be full of ②鼓励、激励:encourage/inspire ③努力、斗争:strive/struggle ④拥抱:embrace/hug 情绪类: ①惊人:amazing/surprising 【点睛】【高分句型1】 As I began to speak, I saw encouraging smiles from Mrs Lin and my friends, which gave me the confidence to continue.
