Ways to save money at the cinema
There’s nothing quite like seeing a new film on the big screen! Here’s how to make a few savings at the cinema.
Get two tickets for the price of one
Buy an insurance (保险) policy from Compare the Market and you’ll get free access to Meerkat Movies, which offers two for the price of one on tickets every Tuesday or Wednesday. Fortunately, there’s a chance to get this for around £1. All you need to do is buy a single day UK travel insurance!
Get some free tickets
The Club Lloyds current account offers six free tickets to use at Odeon or Vue and you’ll get these within a month of opening the account. You’ll need to add £2,000 to the account to cancel out a £3 monthly charge, but that money doesn’t need to be in one go or stay there — you can draw it straight back out.
Buy special offer tickets
From time to time there are deals running that offer cut price tickets. Sites like Groupon often sell bundles (套票) for the likes of Odeon and Vue that work out around £4 or £5 each. Other deals include National Cinema Day (usually in September) when all tickets are £3.
11. Why are you advised to buy an insurance policy from Compare the Market?
A. To see new films for free. B. To travel UK for a single day.
C. To access Meerkat Movies regularly. D. To make a few savings at the cinema.
12. What is the advantage of adding £2,000 to the Club Lloyds account?
A. You can avoid a £3 monthly charge. B. You can get free tickets every month.
C. You can have more free cinema tickets. D. You can get tickets in a convenient way.
13. How much do you pay for buying 3 cut price tickets on National Cinema Day?
A. £3. B. £9. C. £12. D. £15.

B
I used to hate old books. When I say “old books”, I don’t mean classics, though. I mean books with yellow pages, broken spines (书脊) and odd wood- like smells that you need to be careful not to break because they are already so worn down and bring you severe discomfort. One can assume that I didn’t own many old books. I had merely a few here and there that my parents had gifted me, but nothing too special.
In the fourth grade, I was ready to explore a new world of reading, one that went beyond the likes of children’s chapter books and teenagers’ topics. Just then, I found my parents old copies of the entire Harry Potter book series. Visually, my parents books were my worst nightmare. I remember thinking to myself that there was no way I would be able to read these books. However, I eventually had to come to terms with the fact that if I wanted to read the series, I would have to read my parents’ copies. And so began the terrible journey of reading seven old books.
When it was time for me to read the final copy, I was kind of a changed woman. I still strongly disliked old books, but the plot of the entire Harry Potter series had attracted me so much I had almost entirely forgotten what the books looked like. By the end, I had devoted an entire shelf in my room to the Harry Potter books.
Now, I love old books. While the covers are sometimes so worn down that you can barely read the title of the book, you can understand what it’s about anyway. After all, an old book is a representation of generations of readers who have chosen to live in a specific fictional world because the story it contains is just that good. Old books have meaning and I love how much they mean to me now.
14. What can we learn about the author from the first two paragraphs?
A. She felt uneasy about owning old books. B. She had a poor relationship with her parents.
C. She grew fondness for reading classics. D. She was often gifted old books by her parents.
15. How did the author feel when seeing her parents’ Harry Potter series in the fourth grade?
A. Confused. B. Satisfied. C. Discouraged. D. Astonished.
16. What does the author mean by saying “I was kind of a changed woman” in Paragraph 3?
A. She started to enjoy reading fictional books. B. She began to ignore the appearance of the books.
C. She accepted putting old books on her shelf. D. She figured out what she truly wanted to read.
17. What is the best title of the text?
A. My Passion for Reading B. My Connection With Parents via Old Books
C. My Encounter With the Harry Potter Series D. My Journey With Old Books
A 15. C 16. B 17. D
根据第一段“I used to hate old books. When I say “old books”, I don’t mean classics, though. I mean books with yellow pages, broken spines (书脊) and odd wood- like smells that you need to be careful not to break because they are already so worn down and bring you severe discomfort.(我过去讨厌旧书。不过,我说的“旧书”并不是指经典作品。我指的是那些有黄页、断了书脊和奇怪木头气味的书,你需要小心不要把它们弄破,因为它们已经磨损得很厉害了,会给你带来严重的不适)”可知,对作者来说,拥有旧书是一件令人不舒服,不自在的事。故选 A项。
根据第二段“In the fourth grade, I was ready to explore a new world of reading, one that went beyond the likes of children’s chapter books and teenagers’ topics. And so began the terrible journey of reading seven old books.(在四年级时候,我已经准备好去探索一个新的阅读世界,一个超越儿童章节书和青少年主题的世界。
根据第三段“I still strongly disliked old books, but the plot of the entire Harry Potter series had attracted me so much I had almost entirely forgotten what the books looked like. By the end, I had devoted an entire shelf in my room to the Harry Potter books.(我仍然非常不喜欢旧书,但是整个哈利波特系列的情节吸引了我,我几乎完全忘记了这些书的样子。到最后,我已经在我的房间里用了整整一个书架来放哈利波特的书)”可知,是对“I was kind of a changed woman”的解释:作者之所以说自己有点变了是因为她开始更多地关注书的内容而忽略书的品相了。故选B项。
【17题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段“I used to hate old books.(我过去讨厌旧书)”以及最后一段“Now, I love old books. While the covers are sometimes so worn down that you can barely read the title of the book, you can understand what it’s about anyway. After all, an old book is a representation of generations of readers who have chosen to live in a specific fictional world because the story it contains is just that good. Old books have meaning and I love how much they mean to me now.(现在,我喜欢旧书。 D项“My Journey With Old Books(我的旧书之旅)”是本文最好的标题。故选D项。
C
When it comes to heart attacks, the first image that often comes to mind is that of a middle-aged man, clutching (紧抓) his chest and struggling with a pained expression. This is what you’re most likely to see when searching “heart attack” online. You’re far less likely to think of a female heart attack victim.
According to Forbes, medical research has traditionally been led by men, which undoubtedly leads to a lack of female-related data and information in medical research. From diagnosis to treatment, gender differences are often overlooked. For example, a 2017 study found that women are at greater risk of dying of heart attacks than men.
The reason lies in the difference in heart attack symptoms (症状) between men and women. According to the Mayo Clinic, one of the top-ranking hospitals in the US, women are less likely to have chest pains, which are considered as a typical symptom of heart attacks. Instead, they have more atypical symptoms, including shoulder pain and arm pain. As a result, many women were initially given a mistaken diagnosis (诊断), delaying access to the right treatment and increasing the fatality rate.
Even if a female is correctly and immediately diagnosed with a heart attack, there’s another problem: medicine. Research has found that certain medicines used to dissolve blood clots (凝块) right after a heart attack can be helpful for a lot of men, but might lead to serious bleeding issues in women.
Although women are no longer seen as inferior in most parts of the world today, the fields of healthcare and medicine still see a male’s body as the ”standard” human body. For example, Valium has been promoted as the “mother’s little helper” for treating anxiety among women. However, a study noted that the medicine developer had never conducted a single trial involving women until 2003.
Take a look at the medicine you have taken recently. There’s always one recommended dosage (剂量) for adults. But who is this dosage meant for? An adult in general, or specifically an adult man?
18. What is the main point of the first paragraph?
A. There exists a gender gap in online searching.
B. People have a fixed gender impression of heart attacks.
C. Female heart attacks are often observed by researchers.
D. Researches on heart attacks are mainly conducted by men.
19. What does the underlined word “atypical” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Natural. B. Mild. C. Unusual. D. Fatal.
20. Why is the death rate for heart attacks higher in women than in men?
A. Symptoms on women are more severe.
B. Symptoms on women are more misleading.
C. Women don’t seek medical help timely.
D. Women resist proper treatment and medicine.
21. What can be inferred from the passage?
A. Some medicines are more effective on female bodies.
B. Women are disadvantaged groups in the medical field.
C. Medicine trials involving women are being conducted.
D. Women’s health concerns were a priority in medical research.
B 19. C 20. B 21. B
根据第一段“When it comes to heart attacks, the first image that often comes to mind is that of a middle-aged man, clutching (紧抓) his chest and struggling with a pained expression. This is what you’re most likely to see when searching “heart attack” online. You’re far less likely to think of a female heart attack victim. (说到心脏病发作,人们首先想到的画面往往是一个中年男子,捂着胸口,挣扎着露出痛苦的表情。这是你在网上搜索“心脏病”时最可能看到的。你不太可能想到女性心脏病患者。)”可知,文章第一段讨论了心脏病患者的刻板印象——人们通常把心脏病与固定的性别(男性)联系在一起。故选B。
【19题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第三段划线词前句“According to the Mayo Clinic, one of the top-ranking hospitals in the US, women are less likely to have chest pains, which are considered as a typical symptom of heart attacks. (据美国顶级医院之一的梅奥诊所称,女性不太可能出现胸痛,而胸痛被认为是心脏病发作的典型症状。)”可知,胸痛等是心脏病的典型症状,而女性心脏病患者则有着“非典型症状”,所以划线词atypical为“非典型的”之意。故选C。
【20题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段最后一句“As a result, many women were initially given a mistaken diagnosis, delaying access to the right treatment and increasing the fatality rate. (结果,许多妇女最初被误诊,延误了获得正确治疗的机会,并增加了死亡率。)”可知,女性更不容易出现典型的胸痛症状,导致误诊和延误治疗,进而死亡率增加。故选B。
【21题详解】
推理判断题。根据第五段“Although women are no longer seen as inferior in most parts of the world today, the fields of healthcare and medicine still see a male’s body as the ”standard” human body.
D
The idea that night owls who don’t go to bed until the early hours struggle to get anything done during the day may have to be revised. It turns out that staying up late could be good for our brain power as research suggests that people who identify as night owls could be sharper than those who go to bed early.
Researchers led by academics at Imperial College London studied data from the UK Biobank study on more than 26,000 people who had completed intelligence, reasoning, reaction time and memory tests. They then examined how participants’ sleep duration, quality, and chronotype (睡眠类型) affected brain performance. They found that those who stayed up late and those classed as “intermediate” had “superior cognitive function”, while morning risers had the lowest scores.
Going to bed late is strongly associated with creative types. Artists, authors and musicians known to be night owls include Henride Toulouse- Lautrec, James Joyce and Kanye West; But while politicians such as, Winston Churchill and Barack Obama famously seemed to thrive on little sleep, the study found that sleep duration is important for brain function, with those getting between seven and nine hours of shut-eye each night performing best in cognitive tests.
Dr Raha West, lead author and clinical research fellow at the department of surgery and cancer at Imperial College London, said: “While understanding and working with your natural sleep tendencies is essential, it’s equally important to remember to get just enough sleep, not too long or too short. This is crucial for keeping your brain healthy and functioning at its best.”
Prof Daqing Ma, the co-leader of the study who is also from Imperial’s department of surgery and cancer, added: “We found that sleep duration has a direct effect on brain function, and we believe that actively managing sleep patterns is really important for boosting, and safeguarding, the way our brains work.”
22. What do we know about night owls?
A. Night owls struggle to do things in daytime. B. Night owls don’t like sleeping.
C. Night owls may be more intelligent. D. Night owls have to stay up late.
23. What is the author’s purpose in mentioning some people in paragraph 3?
A. To show they sleep less but perform better. B. To illustrate creation is linked with late sleep.
C. To explain the importance of less sleeping. D. To identify which type of person can sleep less.
24. What will Prof Daqing Ma agree with?
A. Active management of sleep patterns is significant.
B. The more we sleep, the better our brain are.
C. Our brain function directly relies on sleeping.
D. Sleep seven to nine hours a day, keep doctors away.
25. Which is the best title of the passage?
A. Sleeping pattern is essential.
B. Staying up will make us creative.
C. Night owls’ sleeping behavior “better” than early risers.
D. Night owls’ cognitive function “superior” to early risers.
C 23. B 24. A 25. D

A Confused. B. Satisfied.
