Tall, long-necked giraffes are famous for their spots which are believed to help the animals hide from their enemies. Just like no two humans have the same fingerprints, each giraffe has its own special pattern of spots. However, a Tennessee zoo made headlines recently after it welcomed one of the world’s most uncommon giraffes.
On July 31, 2023, a baby giraffe was born at Brights Zoo with light brown fur which is a reticulated giraffe (网纹长颈鹿), one of the four different kinds of giraffes. Unlike most giraffes, she was born without spots, a unique feature of the reticulated giraffe. At six feet tall, this baby giraffe is growing well under her mother’s care. She shows typical baby giraffe behavior, such as eating rocks.
Experts said the young giraffe was the only single-colored reticulated giraffe living anywhere on the planet. The last time this happened was 1972 in Japan. A giraffe’s pattern of spots is created when the animal is still growing inside its mother. That means that this giraffe will never have spots.
“The new giraffe might not have survived if she had been born in the wild. Being single-colored, she may not be able to hide quite well,” said Mr David Bright, who runs the zoo. “It will easily be a key target for poachers (偷猎者) because she’s so unusual.”
Brights Zoo stressed that reticulated giraffes had already become imperiled. In 2018, they were officially listed as “threatened”. Thirty-five years ago, there were 36,000 reticulated giraffes. Now, the number has been cut by more than 50%. Only about 16,000 reticulated giraffes remain.
This brown giraffe’s birth is not only a rare and fascinating event, but also an opportunity to raise awareness about the challenges faced by giraffes in the wild. By supporting efforts like this, we can contribute to the conservation of these large creatures and ensure their survival for generations to come.
4. What do we learn from the spots of giraffes?
A They look like giraffe’s footprints.
B. The patterns of the spots are the same.
C. They appear on giraffes from time to time.
D. They are helpful in guarding against their enemies.
5. What’s unique about the young giraffe born at Brights Zoo?
A. She has a large size. B. She has light brown fur.
C. She has no spots. D. She likes eating rocks.
6. What does the underlined word “imperiled” mean in paragraph 5?
A. Endangered. B. Recognized. C. Rare. D. Abundant.
7. Which word can best describe the birth of the young giraffe?
A. Embarrassing. B. Promising. C. Significant. D. Foreseeable.

Imagine a new smartphone product. It works the same way as any other smartphone, but when it is dropped, those cracks that appear after an annoying fall slowly to fade away, and the phone magically repairs itself. A team of researchers led by chemistry professor Takuzo Aida have found a way to create self-repairing plastics that can be used in smartphones, cars and other products. But their new plastics won’t only be used to create unbreakable products, but also help fight against growing wastes harming the planet.
91% of plastics are non-recyclable and filling the Earth with wastes. The increasing plastics in landfills are a growing concern due to their negative environmental impact. In 2019 about only 9% of plastics were recycled globally, leading Japanese scientists to seek to find plastics that can start their own formation or self-repair.
The self-repairing plastics are made by adding a tiny amount of a specialized substance into ordinary plastics to hold the monomers (单体) together by hydrogen bonds (氢键). When the new plastics are broken down by heat, instead of being burnt to wastes, the hydrogen bonds mix and allow for the formation of specially shaped monomers to create a foundation for more monomers to rebuild themselves. The team found that their self-healing plastics were able to automatically repair themselves at room temperature over an hour to regain their durability.
The team’s work suggests great prospects for the future of plastics. “The technique could lead to the development of a made-to-last plastic that does not need to be recycled,” lead professor Aida said, “and can one day be used in products from smartphones to cars and even buildings.”
8. What is the typical feature of the new plastics?
A. They can repair themselves. B. They are costly to produce.
C. They are easy to recycle. D. They are beneficial to health.
9. What urged scientists to look for the new plastics?
A. Economic decline. B. Industrial problems.
C. Environmental concern. D. The Lack of plastics.
10. What does Paragraph 3 mainly tell us?
A. The significance of the new plastics.
B. The positive effects of the new plastics.
C. The main functions of the new plastics.
D. The principle of how the new plastics work.
11. What is Aida’s attitude towards the new plastics?
A. Skeptical. B. Negative. C. Approving. D. Neutral.

Travel is predicted to look extremely different in 2070.
Take airports for example, paperwork will be a thing of the past. Instead of paper passports, your information will be stored in the cloud. This type of technology won’t just include what we are familiar with today—like fingerprints or face scans—but also your heartbeat, as everyone’s heartbeat is unique.
There will be no need to check in. The facial recognition program will instead be able to recognize you, match you with you booked flight and send messages to your phone as you walk through the airport without stopping.
Your bags, especially the heavy ones will be sent directly from your train or taxi to the right plane. And that taxi will not be like the ones we know today. People will be expected to travel to the airport—and around their holidays destinations—in eVTOLs, which refers to electric air taxis that can take off and land without a runway.
As for the trouble of packing, 3D printers will provide perfect solutions. Simply provide your destinations with your size using a body scan before you fly and, upon arrival, you will find a wardrobe (衣橱) filled with 3D-printed clothes. When you leave, these clothes will be recycled and reprinted for the next tourist. Not only will this solve the problem of packing, but also make holiday fashion more environment-friendly.
While the predictions might seem unbelievable now, you only have to look back 50 years to realize it’s all possible. Think back to 1970s when smartphones were just a wild dream. “Google” seemed like a made-up word then, and notebook computers were still almost years away from being invented. Similarly, when we look forward to the next 50 years, the possibilities for development in technology for travel are endless.
12. What can we know about the check-in at the airport in 2070?
A. You need to carry your paper passports.
B. It must check your booked information at the airport.
C. You go through the airport by scanning your fingerprints.
D. It is not necessary for you to check in with facial recognition.
13. When you arrive at your destination, which of the following will happen?
A. Your luggage will be sent to you by normal taxis.
B. Your packing will cause damage to the environment.
C. The 3D-printed clothes will be prepared for you.
D. A wardrobe full of recycled clothes is waiting for you.
14. Why does the author mention 1970s in the last paragraph?
A. To prove the power of the time.
B. To express the confidence for travel.
C. To describe the inventions are necessary.
D. To show the possibility of realizing the predictions.
15. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. The future of Air Taxi. B. Predictions for future travel.
C. An alternative to future packing. D. The advantages of eVTOLs.

52. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I grew up in a small town where the primary school was ten minutes’ walk from my home. So I would rush back home for lunch.
One lunchtime when I was in the fourth grade will always be kept in my mind. I had been picked to be the princess in the school play. However, no matter how smoothly I read lines at home, the moment I stepped onstage, every word escaped me. Finally, my teacher took me aside, explaining in a kind voice, “I had written the narrator’s (旁白) part in the play. Are you willing to change roles?” I had to hold back tears as I nodded, watching helplessly my part go to another girl.
I felt too ashamed to tell my mother what happened when I went home for lunch that day. But she sensed I was different, she asked if I wanted to walk in the yard.
It was a lovely spring day with the rose vine turning green. Under the huge tree, we could see bunches of yellow dandelions (蒲公英) in the grass as if a painter had touched our landscape with dabs of gold. I watched my mother casually bend down by one dandelion. “I think I’m going to clear all the weeds (草),” she said, pulling it out by its roots. “You see, we’ll have only beautiful roses in this garden.”
“But I like dandelions.” I protested. “All flowers are beautiful—even dandelions.”
My mother looked at me seriously. “Yes, every flower gives pleasure in its own way, doesn’t it?” She asked thoughtfully. I gave her an approving nod, secretly pleased that the dandelions could survive my mom’s wedding plan. “And that is true of people too,” she continued. “Not everyone can be a princess, but there is no shame in that.” Relieved that she had guessed my pain, I couldn’t help breaking into tears.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右:

A. They look like giraffe’s footprints.
【答案】4. D 5. C 6. A 7. C

In 2019 about only 9% of plastics were recycled globally leading Japanese scientists to seek to find plastics that can start their own formation or self-repair.

Finally came the big day.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】I told her what had happened. She listened and smiled reassuringly. “You will be a beautiful narrator,” she encouraged, “The narrator’s part is as important as the part of a princess.” Wearing a shining smile, my beloved mother comforted me as always she did. Her words reminded me of how much I loved to read stories aloud to her. Over the next weeks, with her constant encouragement, I learned to take pride in the role. Lunchtimes were spent reading over my lines painstakingly and talking about what I would wear.
Finally came the big day. Waiting backstage, I suddenly felt nervous, but it was at that very moment that I found a dandelion in my pocket. Looking at it, I knew my mother was out there for me, which calmed me down and brought me power, My performance turned out to be a great success. And I firmly believed the princess couldn’t have won such thunderous applause without my beautiful narration. Since then, the dandelion, a gift from my mother, has always inspired me to be a confident girl.
