Aren’t you just tired of being told what to do with your time? Now you have a list to end all lists! Take a look at the following two examples from the list of“101 things not to do”. Swim with Dolphins? Swimming with dolphins is one of the world’s most profitable tourist activities. However, not every dolphin will welcome having their busy, tiring day interrupted by tourists screaming pushing around them in the water. Worse yet, when dolphins get too near to the boats loaded with tourists, they could get caught up in ropes and killed by propellers (螺旋桨). Here’s a little secret. Dolphins look like smiling at you, but actually they’re just opening their mouths. Go to See the Mona Lisa? There must be something about the mysterious (神秘的) smile. The 6 million people who visit the lady in the Louvre every year can’t all be wrong, after all. But they can be quite annoying, standing in front of you, holding up their cameras to prevent you from seeing anything. In fact, it is hard for you to see the painting clearly because you have to stay away from it for security reasons. After lining up for hours, many tourists can remain in front of the painting only for 15 seconds at most. If the mysterious lady in the picture knew her fate, she wouldn’t just be smiling, she’d be laughing. So, still long to see the Mona Lisa? If you want to find out more about the list, read 101 Things NOT to Do Before You Die. Visit www. Not 2 dobeforeidie. co. uk and buy the book at a 20% discount. 1. According to the passage, swimming with dolphins _______. A. is the world’s most popular tourist activity B. gives fun to both tourists and dolphins C. will make tourists busy and tired D. can cause danger to dolphins 2. What does the author think about going to see the Mona Lisa? A. It is wrong to go and see the mysterious smile. B. It is not as satisfying as expected C. Fifteen seconds in front of the painting is enough. D. Waiting in line for hours is worthwhile. 3. What is the main purpose of the passage? A. To advertise a book. B. To introduce a website. C. To comment on popular lists. D. To offer tourist activities. B Brad closed the door slowly as Sue left home to visit her mother. Expecting a whole day to relax, he was thinking whether to read the newspaper or watch his favorite TV talk show on his first day off in months. “This will be quite easy, just like a walk in the park,” he’d told his wife. “I’ll look after the kids well, and you can go to visit your mom” Things started well, but just after eight o’clock, his three little “good kids” — Mike, Randy, and Alex — came down the stairs in their night clothes and shouted “Breakfast, Daddy.” When food had not appeared within thirty seconds, Randy began using his spoon on Alex’s head as if it were a drum Alex started to shout loudly in time to the beat. Mike chanted (咏唱) “Where’s my toast, where’s my toast” in the background Brad realized his newspaper would have to wait for a few seconds. Life became worse after breakfast. Mike wore Randy’s underwear on his head Randy locked himself in the bathroom, while Alex shouted again because he was going to wet his pants. Nobody could find clean socks, although they were just before their very eyes. Someone named “Not Me” had spilled a whole glass of orange juice into the basket of clean clothes. Brad knew the talk show had already started. By ten o’clock, things were out of control. Alex was wondering why the fish in the jar refused his bread and butter. Mike was trying to show off his talent by decorating the kitchen wall with his color pencils. Randy, thankfully, appeared to be reading quietly in the family room, but closer examination showed that he was eating apple jam straight from the bottle with his hands. Brad realized that the talk show was over and reading would be impossible. At exactly 11:17, Brad called the daycare centre. “I suddenly have to go into work and my wife is away. Can I bring the boys over in a few minutes?” The answer was obviously “yes” because Brad was smiling. 4. When his wife left home, Brad expected to _______. A. go out for a walk in the park B. enjoy his first day off work C. read the newspaper to his children D. watch TV talk show with his children 5. What did Randy do? A. Drawing on the wall. B. Reading in a room C. Feeding the fish. D. Eating apple jam 6. Why did Brad ask the daycare centre for help? A. Because he wanted to clean up his house. B. Because he suddenly had to go to his office. C. Because he found it hard to manage his boys. D. Because he had to take his wife back home. 7. This passage is developed _______. A. by space B. by comparison C. by cause and effect D. by time C More than a third of the world’s population lives in dry lands, areas that experience significant water shortages. Scientists and engineers at The University of Texas at Austin have developed a unique solution to help people in these areas gain clean drinking water. They developed a low-cost gel film (凝胶膜) that can pull water from the air in even the driest climate. Combining two simple ingredients, cellulose and konj acgum, the gel is inexpensive to produce. Just one kilogram of gel can absorb up to six liters of water in a dry climate. For those living in a climate with relative humidity (湿度), one kilo gram of gel can collect up to 13 liters of water a day. As the gel is so inexpensive and easy to make, it may offer a way of providing drinking water to countries with water shortages. Previously, researchers have harvested(collected)fresh water from fog and dew, but that only serves areas with high humidity. Other attempts at pulling water from desert air are typically energy-intensive and do not produce much. In fact, this gel is a huge advance from former water harvesting technologies. The maximum water harvested has been 5.87 liters in places with relative humidity. This new gel doubles this amount, uses no energy and is simple to operate and it can be molded (塑造) into a shape or size that best suits the user. “This new work is about practical solutions that people can use to get water in the hottest, driest places on Earth,” said Guihua Yu professor at the Cockrell School of Engineering. “This could allow millions of people unable to have drinking water to have simple water generating devices at home that they can easily operate.” “This is not something you need an advanced degree to use,” said Youhong Guo, the paper’s lead author. “It’s straightforward enough that anyone can make it at home if they have the materials.” Scientists are planning on making a thicker gel that will increase the production, making the technology a workable solution to drought. 8. What do we know about the gel film from Paragraph2? A. It can increase the humidity of the air. B. It has been widely applied in desert areas. C. It could harvest drinking water from the air. D. It costs lots of money and energy to produce. 9. What is Guihua Yu’s attitude towards the new water-harvesting method? A. Doubtful. B. Shocked C. Challenging. D. Hopeful. 10. What does the underlined word “straightforward” in Paragraph 5 mean? A. Plain. B. Obvious. C. Tough. D. Direct. 11. What will scientists intend to do next? A. Produce the gel in alarge amount. B. Raise money for further research. C. Develop a gel with more thickness. D. Teach people to make the gel at home. D Two friends have an argument that breaks up their friendship forever, even though neither one can remember how the whole thing got started Such sad events happen over and over in high schools across the country. In fact, according to an official report on youth violence (暴力),“In our country today, the greatest threat to the lives of children and teenagers is not disease or hunger or abandonment, but the terrible reality of violence”. Considering this, why aren’t students taught to manage conflict the way they are taught to solve math problems, drive cars, or stay physically fit? First of all, students need to realize that conflict is unavoidable. A report on violence among middle school and high school students shows that most violent incidents between students begin with a relatively unimportant insult (侮辱). For example, a fight could start over the fact that one student eats a peanut butter sandwich each lunchtime. Laughter over the sandwich can lead to insults, which in tum can lead to violence. The problem isn’t in the sandwich, but in the way students deal with the conflict. Once students recognize that conflict is unavoidable, they can practice the golden rule of conflict resolution (解决): stay calm Once the student feels calmer, he or she should choose words that will calm the other person down as well. Rude words, name-calling, and accusation only add fuel to the emotional fire. On the other hand, soft words spoken at a normal sound level can put out the fire before it explodes out of control. After both sides have calmed down, they can use another key strategy (策略) for conflict resolution: listening. Listening allows the two sides to understand each other. One person should describe his or her side, and the other person should listen without interrupting. Afterward, the listener can ask non-threatening questions to clarify the speaker’s position. Then the two people should change roles. Finally, students need to consider what they are hearing. This doesn’t mean trying to figure out what’s wrong with the other person. It means understanding what the real issue is and what both sides are trying to accomplish. For example, a shouting match over a peanut butter sandwich might happen because one person thinks the other person is unwilling to try new things. Students need to ask themselves questions such as these: How did this start? What do I really want? What am I afraid of? As the issue becomes clearer, the conflict often simply becomes smaller. Even if it doesn’t, careful thought helps both sides figure out a mutual solution. There will always be conflict in schools, but that doesn’t mean there needs to be violence. After students in Atlanta started a conflict resolution program, according to Educators for Social Responsibility, “64 percent of the teachers reported less physical violence in the classroom; 75 percent of the teachers reported an increase in student cooperation; and 92 percent of the students felt better about themselves”. Learning to resolve conflicts can help students deal with friends, teachers, parents, bosses, and coworkers. In that way, conflict resolution is a basic life skill that should be taught in schools across the country. 12. FromParagraph2 we can learn that _______. A. students tend to become angry easily B. a small conflict can lead to violence C. violence is more likely to happen at lunchtime D. the eating habit of a student is often the cause of a fight 13. Why do students need to ask themselves the questions stated in Paragraph 5? A. To find out who is to criticize. B. To get ready to try new things. C. To make clear what the real issue is. D. To figure out how to stop the shouting match. 14. After the conflict resolution program was started in Atlanta, it was found that _______. A. there was a decrease in classroom violence B. the teacher-student relationship greatly improved C. there was less student cooperation in the classroom D. more teachers felt better about themselves in schools 15. What is this article mainly about? A. The lives of school children. B. The cause of arguments in schools. C. How to analyze youth violence. D. How to deal with school conflicts. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 The idea that history is an outdated course of study that will lead to limited career options has spread. ____16____ It is a wonderful way to prepare for a successful future. To start with, try every means to promote yourself in the field where you are skilled. After all, a blossom flower attracts more butterflies. In addition, always stay passionate, humorous, helpful and supportive, as the saying goes, “Open your mind, and the wind blows inside”. Finally, what about joining in some activities or school clubs? In this way, you can have more chance to meet people with the same interests. I hope my advice will be of some help to you. And I believe your efforts will pay off. 听力1-5ACCAC 6-10ABCBA 11-15BCBAB 16-20CBCBA 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$
