And the annual event has been going strong for more than 50 years to celebrate the instrument and its cultural significance in this country. Positivus Festival Positivus is the largest music festival in Latvia, attracting big-name stars across all major genres and giving new artists a chance to shine. It's also one of the most accessible music festivals in the world, even for families with small children. Other pluses? Alfa Future People Held in the Russian countryside, six hours east of Moscow by car, Alfa Future People is more than a massive electronic dance music (EDM) festival, with exhibitions on the latest related technology and athletic opportunities like a volleyball tournament and gymnastics classes. Mysteryland If you' re into EDM, you won't want to miss Mysteryland. Not only is this Dutch festival a bellwether(风向标) of EDM, its grand stage setups will blow your mind. There was a mass shooting this past July, and another in early September. "People think Curtis Bay is a dangerous place. It's not. It's just we' re surrounded by dangerous things, "says Taysia Thompson, 17. Taysia, is one of the Free Your Voice members, a group of student activists fighting against a very different kind of danger in their neighborhood: air pollution and climate change. Now, the focus of their movement is the mountains of coal. Coal releases a fine, black dust small enough to get into people's lungs. It makes respiratory(呼吸的) diseases worse, or can even cause disease and premature death. And there are the greenhouse gas emissions after the coal is burned The teens of Free Your Voice are taking on a big opponent: the massive goods transportation company CSX, which transported more than 8 million tons of coal through South Baltimore in 2023. The goal is to eventually get the state regulators to deny the permit that CSX needs to operate, or at least require the company to enclose all the coal, or at the very least put water onto all of it so there's less dust blowing around. This past summer, Taysia and three other students spent their time gathering evidence to try and get the coal pollution out of their neighborhood. They used sticky paper to gather samples of dust from all over the neighborhood to prove that the dust is from coal. They are also sending dust samples to a scientist in California, who uses an electron microscope to compare the dust that's in this neighborhood to samples from the piles of coal at the terminal in South Baltimore to see if it matches. The students now have support from their community. But the responses from officials have not been very satisfying. "Everyone is just breathing the air. And we will keep fighting. "says Taysia. 24. Why do the teens of Free Your Voice take CSX as an opponent? A. To cure lung diseases. B. To tackle air pollution. C. To resist mass shootings. D. To cut premature death rate. 25. What do the teens of Free Your Voice hope to achieve? A. Scientists will examine the dust samples. B. Officials will refuse CSX the operation permit. C. State regulators will keep fighting against pollution. D. Locals in Curtis Bay will clear the mountains of coal away. 26. What can be inferred about the teens' fight? A. It isn't all plain sailing. B. It will definitely end in victory. C. The teens lack solid evidence. D. The teens work on it all by themselves. 27. Which of the following is the best title for the text? A. Tourists Avoiding Dangerous South Baltimore B. Teens Gaining Support in Environmental Protection C. 17-year-old Girl Fighting Coal Pollution in Neighborhood D. Student Activists Pushing back against Big Polluter C There's a useful concept from psychology that helps explain why good people do things that harm the environment: the false consensus (共识) effect. That's where we overvalue how acceptable and common our own behavior is in society. Put simply, if you' re doing something ( even if you secretly know you probably shouldn't), you' re more likely to think plenty of other people do it too. What's more, you likely overestimate how much other people think that behavior is broadly OK. This bias(偏见) allows people to justify socially unacceptable or illegal behaviors. Researchers have observed the false consensus effect in drug use and illegal hunting. More recently, conservationists are beginning to reveal how this effect contributes to environmental damage. In Australia, people who admitted to poaching (偷猎) thought it was much more common in society than it really was, and had higher estimates than fishers who obeyed the law. They also believed others viewed poaching as socially acceptable; however, in reality, more than 90% of fishers held the opposite view. The false consensus effect has also shown up in studies examining support for nuclear energy and offshore wind farms. Just as concepts from psychology can help explain some forms of environmental damage, so too can they help address it. For example, research shows people are more likely to litter in areas where there's already a lot of trash scattered around; so making sure the ground around a bin is not covered in rubbish may help. Factual information on how other people think and behave can be very powerful. Energy companies have substantially reduced energy consumption simply by showing people how their electricity use compares to their neighbors. Encouragingly, stimulating people's natural desire for status has also been successful in getting people to“ go green to be seen”, or to publicly buy eco-friendly products. As the research evidence shows, social norms can be a powerful force in encouraging and popularizing environmentally friendly behaviors. Perhaps you can do your bit by sharing this article! 28. Which example best illustrates the false consensus effect? A. A student spends long hours surfing the internet. B. A blogger assumes many people dislike his posts. C. A driver frequently parks illegally in public places. D. A smoker believes people generally approve of smoking. 29. How did most Australian fishers view the issue of poaching? A. It is unacceptable. B. It is widespread. C. It is controversial. D. It is complex. 30. What do the underlined words “go green to be seen” in paragraph 5 mean? A. Embrace green habits for better health. B. Make green choices that others can perceive. C. Join green movements for personal fulfillment. D. Choose green items that are easy to spot in stores. 31. What is a recommended approach to addressing environmental problems? A. Understate social norms. B. Highlight personal responsibilities. C. Publicize sustainable practices. D. Encourage technological innovations. D The bacteria which inhabit(栖居于) human beings, particularly the guts(肠道) of those beings, have been found in recent years to be important for fighting off diseases. That something similar happens in other animal species is doubtless true as well. But work by Seon-Woo Lee at Dong-A University and Jihyun Kim at Yonsei University, both in South Korea, suggests that it is not only animals that benefit from such bacterial protection. Their study, just published in Nature Biotechnology, shows that plants do, too. Crop plants of the nightshade family, such as potatoes and tomatoes, are not immune to a soil bacterium called Ralstonia solanacearum. This enters their roots and spreads through their water-transport systems, causing them to wilt (枯萎). Infection is usually deadly; the disease costs potato farmers alone $1bn a year. A variety of tomato called Hawaii 7996, however, does not suffer from such bacterial wilt. Dr Lee and Dr Kim wondered if the explanation for this exceptionalism lay with other bacteria in the soil. To test that idea, they grew crops of Hawaii 7996 and a second tomato variety called Moneymaker. Once the plants were established, the researchers analyzed bacteria in the soil around the plants’ roots and found systematic differences that depended on which tomato variety was growing. This observation made their explanation reasonable and likely to be true. They then transplanted some of their Moneymaker plants into soil that had previously supported Hawaii 7996s, and some of the Hawaiian plants into soil that had been home to Moneynakers. As controls, they similarly uprooted(拔起) individuals of both varieties and replanted them in soil once occupied by the same variety. That done, they exposed all of their plants to R. solanacearum and monitored them over the course of 14 days. They found the disease progressed almost 30% more slowly in Moneymaker plants grown in “Hawaiian” soil than it did in those Moneymakers that had been replanted into their own soil. In contrast, it progressed rapidly in the normally resistant Hawaiian variety when this was transferred into Moneymaker soil. Further study revealed that credit for this disease resistance went to a single type of soil bacterium, called TRM1. Dr Lee and Dr Kim therefore cultivated this bug in their laboratory and used it to treat soil into which Moneymaker plants were then planted. When these were infected with R. solanacearum they proved more resistant than others that had been planted into untreated soil as controls. These findings suggest to Dr Lee and Dr Kim that the roots of Hawaii 7996 are releasing compounds (化合物 ) which encourage the growth of TRM1. What those compounds are has yet to be determined. The two researchers' work, however, seems to suggest something constructive. 32. The author mentions the bacteria inhabiting human beings to introduce . A. the benefits of bacteria to humans B. the effects of bacteria on plants C. the efforts to fight off diseases D. the reasons for plant diseases 33. What are the two researchers' findings based on? A. Comprehensive analyses of how plants are infected. B. Careful observation of the transplanting process. C. Controlled experiments on the uprooted individuals of both varieties. D. Comparison of the progress of the disease in different conditions. 34. According to the study, why are some plants immune to infection? A. They have better water-transport systems. B. They are protected by some other bacteria. C. They are genetically different from others. D. They have resistance to bacteria when transferred. 35. The two researchers' work indicates that . A. new ways will be found to deal with bacterial wilt B. causes of some plant diseases have been discovered C. a new chapter of agricultural science and technology has started D. the composition of the compounds released has been identified 第二节 (共5小题; 每题2.5分, 满分12.5分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出最佳选项,选项中的两项为多余选项。 Photography for me has always been a key. It opens up doors, gives me an excuse to travel with more purpose, and lets me see behind the scenes. 36 —“Better get back to taking photos. Nice to chat!” What is my advice to beginners? I didn't study photography; I'm not formally trained;37 But that's not what photography is about for me. If you want to be a photographer, be constantly asking yourself the question: “What is the story here?” It doesn't matter if you are shooting a dish at your favorite restaurant or the food waste processing plant that deals with what's left over. 38 What does that mean? If I'm photographing a dinner party for Social Supply, it's important to capture not just the plate of food, but to step back and capture the scene around it. If I'm taking photos of a mushroom harvest in Yunnan, I make sure to find an angle that shows just how much they've harvested, but also a few close-ups of the weathered hands that are carefully sorting. 39 I've taken hundreds of thousands of photos this year alone. The more you shoot the better you will be. So, start shooting— anything and everything, but specially your friends’ businesses and projects. Do I have a good camera? Yes, but some people still think that the photos I post from my phone were taken on that camera, so don't confuse a good device with being a good photographer. 40 So start there, and start today. A. Let the story guide you. B. I have actually no art experience. C. Like anything, photography requires practice. D. Photography becomes an incredible drive to explore. E. Some of my favorite photographers just use their phone. F. It also helps to slip out of awkward small talk at parties. G. I feel deeply connected with whatever is captured through my camera lens. Ever since he was a kid, Arjun loved reading stories. She was a lively girl from Mexico, and her red mushroom hair cut immediately drew everyone's eyes. With a welcoming smile, Mr. Stone gestured for her to sit beside Mike, a student known for teasing others. During break time, Mike couldn't help but laugh when he caught sight of his new desk mate. Sara's distinctive hairstyle seemed like an open invitation for him to make fun of her. Leaning in towards Sara, he playfully suggested, “Hey, Sara. Ever thought about changing your name to Dora ? You look just like Dora the Explorer!” His words caused laughter and cheers from the others in the classroom. Sara's eyes filled with tears, her cheeks turning red with embarrassment. Feeling hurt and upset, she stood up suddenly, rushing to the teacher's office to seek support from Mr. Stone. After hearing her story, Mr. Stone offered her gentle comfort, saying, “Sara, your hairstyle is truly pretty. Remember, everyone has their own sense of beauty.” Mr. Stone then directed his attention to Mike, expressing his disappointment and urging Mike to apologize to Sara. “Mike,” he continued, “your actions were unkind. We must treat everyone with empathy (同情). Laughing at Sara’ s hair has deeply hurt her.” This conflict was temporarily settled, but Mr. Stone found himself lost in thought. Reflecting on his own childhood, Mr. Stone recalled how he had been teased for being overweight. The pain caused by hurtful words was like wrinkles on a crumpled(压皱的) ball of paper. Even if you smoothed them out, the wrinkles stayed. He wanted to teach an important lesson to Mike, the troublemaker. Then, a unique strategy came to mind. He contacted Mike's mother, explaining the situation and discussing a plan with her to develop empathy in her son. They agreed that over the weekend, Mike's mother would arrange for Mike to have his hair cut extremely short. 注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右; 2. 请按如下格式在相应位置作答。 On Monday morning, Mike unwillingly approached the classroom. Feeling nervous and embarrassed, his heart was heavy with worry that his classmates would tease him. His hair had been cut so short that the skin under the hair was nearly visible. As he stepped through the door, the room erupted in giggles, nicknaming him “Baldy.” A few curious boys came up and attempted to touch his newly shaved head. Overwhelmed by shame and anger, Mike shouted out, “You are mean!” Tears welled up in his eyes as Mike stood up and ran towards the door. At that moment, Mr. Stone walked into the classroom with a ball of paper. With a gentle pat on Mike's shoulder, he guided him back to his seat. As Mr. Stone made his way to the platform, the room fell silent. Holding up the crumpled ball of paper, he began to smooth out its wrinkles. “Each fold represented a scar of hurtful words. Even when we try to apologize,” Mr. Stone explained softly, “the wounds remain. Let us always speak with kindness and warmth.” From that day on, Mike learned a valuable lesson: the importance of kindness and empathy. 听力原文 ( Text 1) M: What can I do for you, madam? M: They were, but when the robbers saw the police, they lost their cool and attacked the people in the bank. I hope those robbers get punished! W: So do I. ( Text 10) M: I'm here today to talk to you about working in computer gaming. I'd certainly recommend it as a profession. Not because it's popular, nor because it's a well-paid job - generally it isn't - but rather because it provides you with many opportunities to come up with new ideas and create exciting products. People get jobs in the computer games industry after receiving degrees in all sorts of subjects. Of course, if you have a course in computer, that will give you an advantage but it's certainly not necessary. I myself graduated in physics and colleagues of mine did history, engineering and English. The degree itself is less important than the love for the job. It goes without saying that everyone who joins the industry enjoys playing games. My parents always told me I spent far too much time on them, so much that they suggested I put it to good use and apply for work in the industry. My uncle sent me the name of someone he knew at a major games company, so I decide there first. I was lucky enough to get taken on. I didn't have the skills to become a technical programmers of course and started as a games tester. That taught me a huge amount and after six months I was able to do something more demanding. Now I'm given a position in the research depart. I'm quite satisfied with my job. 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$
