Research recently studied land subsidence (地面沉降) in China’s major (主要的) cities, raising people’s worries about land sinking (下沉) in the country.
However, Hu Xie, co-author of the study, said this idea isn’t right scientifically. “Almost every city has areas of sinking and rising,” Hu told the Intellectual, a new science and technology media. The sinking of certain areas in a city does not mean the whole city is sinking. Human activities, like digging to build or taking out groundwater. are often the reason for it. What matters is how the areas are influenced and how quickly the land changes.
In fact, during times of fast economic (经济的) development, the rate (比率) of land subsidence in China has been much slower than that in other countries.
For example, in San Jose, California, US, certain areas sank by 1.2 meters between 1912 and 1933. This was the time when the area quickly developed. The subsidence rate in Tokyo, Japan, even reached 27 centimeters a year during the 1950s. However, the subsidence rates in major Chinese cities are still around a few millimeters a year.
Even so, the government has taken methods to slow down the sinking. The key is not taking out too much water from the ground. The South-to-North Water Diversion Project (南水北调工程) is offering a helping hand to the country’s northern cities. Through this project, less water from the ground is used in northern areas and land subsidence in many areas of Beijing and Tianjin has stopped.
Shanghai has also reduced yearly ground subsidence from around 10 mm in 1995 to 6 mm in 2019 through efforts such as improving the water supply system (供水系统) and closing deep wells (井), according to The Paper.
29. Hu Xie might agree that ________.
A. nearly half of China’s cities are sinking
B. the sinking of certain areas matters most
C. land subsidence is not a serious problem
D. many cities have areas of sinking and rising
30. Usually, when an area’s economy develops fast, the rate of land subsidence is ________.
A. low B. high C. uninfluenced D. unknown
31. What method has Shanghai taken to stop land subsidence?
A. Using less groundwater. B. Using recycled water.
C. Encouraging people to save water. D. Using water from southern cities.
32. What is the purpose of the passage?
A. To show the rate of land subsidence in China.
B. To explain the different causes of land subsidence.
C. To introduce the South-to-North Water Diversion Project.
D. To make Chinese people less worried about land subsidence.

Hundreds of emperor penguin chicks (帝企鹅雏鸟) jumped off a 15-meter cliff (悬崖), as high as a five-story building. This scene was captured (拍摄) in January at Atka Bay, Antarctica.
This jump seems brave but could be lethal to these young penguins.
National Geographic shows us emperor penguins usually raise their chicks on sea ice platforms. When these chicks are 5 months old, they lose their baby feathers and grow adult feathers, which are waterproof.
Not long after, the chicks have to begin their first swim in the ocean to hunt for themselves. Normally, they just need to jump from the sea ice, which is less than a meter high.
However, the fast-melting (快速融化) ice in Antarctica changes the situation. The Antarctic summer sea ice has declined (减少) quickly since 2016, reported the BBC. In February 2023, the total area of sea ice reached a record low of 1.91 million square kilometers.
“Emperors depend on sea ice for their breeding cycle (繁殖周期). It’s the platform they use to bring up their young,” Peter Fretwell from the British Antarctic Survey (BAS), told the BBC. If the ice platform melts or breaks apart before chicks develop their waterproof feathers, they are more likely to drown (溺亡) or freeze to death. For this reason, emperor penguins are now choosing to raise their babies on the ice shelf. As a result, chicks must face the challenge of jumping off a high cliff.
“When the chicks get to this cliff face, they’re like ... This does not look like a fun jump, but I guess I’m gonna have to go’,” Michelle LaRue, a scientist at the University of Canterbury, New Zealand, told National Geographic.
According to Live Science, the decline in the ice has caused thousands of emperor penguin chicks to die in West Antarctica in 2022. The continuing decline of sea ice may force more emperors to make their nests on ice shelves, said Fretwell.
“It’s heartbreaking to think that the whole species (物种) may be gone if climate change continues on the path that it’s on at the moment,” he added.
33. What does the underlined word “lethal” in Paragraph 2 most probably mean?
A. Deadly. B. Helpful. C. Unusual. D. Boring.
34. Why do emperor penguin chicks jump off cliffs?
A. They want to travel across the ocean.
B. They are celebrating getting their adult feathers.
C. They are trying to avoid being caught by hunters.
D. They have no other way to enter the water to hunt.
35. What is causing emperor penguins to raise their young on ice shelves?
A. Rising sea levels. B. More food for the chicks.
C. Bigger size of ice shelves. D. The fast melting of sea ice.
36. What is the main worry Fretwell expressed about emperor penguins in the passage?
A. Their shorter breeding cycle.
B. Their ability to hunt for themselves.
C. Their more dependence on sea ice.
D. The possible disappearance of the species.
【答案】33. A 34. D 35. D 36. D
【解析】

①Sometimes a little self-criticism (自我批评) is not a bad thing. We all can learn much from our mistakes. However, too much of it may influence your brain and your life. Negative (消极的) self-talk is that little voice in your head. It says you are not good enough. It reminds you of all your faults and mistakes.
②Dr. Steven, an educator and researcher on how the mind controls behavior, said that some good students who study hard normally do not do well in a test because of “test anxiety (考试焦虑)”.
③Lindsay was one of Steven’s best students at a community college. She came to class early took part in discussions and did all of her homework. However, she did poorly in exams. When Steven asked her how she felt before a test, she told him she was very nervous. She wondered why she had trouble remembering what she had studied. She did not trust that she knew the right answers. This is an example of negative self-talk, which can influence a student’s grades.
④Dr. Steven took Lindsay’s negative self-talks and turned them into positive (积极的) questions. Before a test, he told Lindsay to say to herself: Why am I so relaxed when I take an exam? Why do I remember everything I study for an exam? ▲
⑤Lindsay took his advice. Two weeks later, she took an exam in another class and scored 15 points higher than she had on an earlier exam. Four weeks later, she earned an “A” on the final exam in Steven’s class. Lindsay left community college and went to a four-year university. She continued to use the method of positive self-talk. When Dr. Steven visited her a year later, she had good news to share: she had got straight A’s on all of her exams.
⑥ Dr. Steven saw student after student succeed with his method. More importantly, they got their self-confidence back. And he does not just help his students. He also encourages his friends and neighbors to get rid of negative self-talk gradually in their life. In a television interview, he said, “We can program ourselves for success in class or in life, or we can program ourselves for failure.”
37. What’s the purpose of Paragraph 3?
A. To introduce Lindsay. B. To catch readers’ interests.
C. To support Dr. Steven’s idea. D. To connect the next paragraph.
38. Which of the following can be put in the blank in Paragraph 4?
A. Why do I trust my answers? B. Why am I so worried?
C. Why do I doubt myself? D. Why am I so weak in the exam?
39. What’s the structure of the passage?
A. B. C. D.
40. What’s the best title of the passage?
A. Negative Self-talk Makes You Succeed.
B. Negative Self-talk Makes You Better.
C. Positive Self-talk Makes a Great Difference.

In the big cities with many chances, some young people are now looking at China’s countryside to chase their dreams.
Ren Yin, a 27-year-old young woman from Hongcun village in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, is one of them.
In 2017, China introduced the rural vitalization strategy (乡村振兴战略). It helps businesses, offers nice places to live and builds community spirit, making life better for people in the countryside. Ren wanted to have her own cafe and help her country. In 2022, she started a cafe in her village, just one year after she left her teaching job.
Her parents weren’t on her side at the beginning. They thought this might not be a good use of her talents. But Ren chose to follow her heart, saying that’s what her generation does.
Growing up after China’s reform and opening-up and the one-child policy (政策), Ren and others of her age are very independent. They know they want to follow their dreams, said China Youth Daily.
However, starting a cafe is not easy. Ren is thankful for the support from the villagers who helped her find a place for her cafe and improved the roads. To attract more people, she designed her cafe to look different, with a special shape and served special drinks like mountain walnut-flavored lattes (山核桃味拿铁).
But Ren knows it’s hard to keep her business going. So she hopes that when the nearby Jingshan Temple becomes a tourist attraction, it will help her cafe and other businesses in the area.
Despite (尽管) of the challenges, Ren doesn’t regret moving back to the countryside. “I think many countryside areas in China are like hidden treasures waiting to be found,” she said.

She came to class early, took part in discussions and did all of her homework.
D. Positive Self-talk Can Change Your Goal.
