Fun Story B This was our last trip before high school. I had been looking forward to it for weeks. But looking at the roller coaster (过山车), my stomach felt too tight to say anything at all. The big girl beside us was Tasha, my best friend Dan’s sister. We came here in her car. She was a singer. She was fantastic on the stage. Just the image of her up there made me think she was so cool. Our roller coaster car pulled up and my friends rushed forward. I felt my legs couldn’t move. All I could think about was the roller coaster might fly off into the sky. Without a word, I turned, ran out of the line. I knew what people were saying about me, but I didn’t care. I just kept moving past the crowd, found a bench near the bathrooms to sit down and put my head in my hands. “Hey! Are you okay?” I looked up. It was Tasha! “Oh, uh, yeah, I just started feeling, um, sick.” I responded. “You know, it’s okay if you were scared. Everyone gets scared.” She said. “You don’t.” I said in a low voice. “I’ve seen you on that stage. You were fearless.” “I’m glad it looks like I’m not scared!” Tasha smiled. “But that’s not true. I get really scared and nervous before I perform.” Before I noticed she was on the bench by my side, her words moved on. “Hey, look, singing is important to me. And I want to share what I love with my people. So, even if I’m scared, I do it anyway. I push through the fear and just get up and do it. Is taking roller coaster important to you?” “Yeah, it is. And I want to be able to look back and remember having fun with my friends. I don’t want to remember running away and sitting alone by the bathrooms.” “Everyone gets scared, but brave people don’t let fear control them.” She looked into my eyes. Still being lost in what she said, I saw my friends coming towards me. I ▲ . When we were leaving, Tasha took a photo of my big smile in front of the coaster. I put it on my door. What’s the meaning of the underlined word “reminder”? A. A person who is important to you. B. A thing that brings back some memories. C A person who takes a trip with you. D. A thing that gives you more courage. C Everyone knows that friendships are important. We all need our best friends. Best friends share good times and bad. We tell our close friends our secrets. But what about casual friends? They are the friends we see only now and then. They are our classmates, the customers at the cafe, or the neighbor walking his dog. When we have a lot of casual friends, it improves our lives in several ways. First, casual friends make us happy. We talk to them at the bus stop or the farm stand. We feel like we are part of a community. Research shows that the more casual friends we have, the more positive we feel. In one study, students felt much happier when they talked to more classmates than usual. These low-key(低调的) friendships become very important as we get older. We have the most friends at age 25, but the number goes down after that. As we get older, we have fewer friendships and can feel alone. But we feel less lonely when we have many casual friends. Second, casual friends connect us to other groups of people. They tell us about fun activities and possible jobs. In fact, people are 58 percent more likely to get a job through a casual friend than a close friend. Casual friends introduce us to their other friends. They help when we want to know about good restaurants or exciting movies. Research shows that casual friendships are a good way to spread all kinds of information. Finally, casual friends introduce us to a variety of new ideas. Our best friends often think like us, but casual friends may have very different opinions. When we talk to different people, we learn new ways of seeing the world. It makes us kinder and more understanding. To have a better life, make more casual friends. Talk more to strangers. These people can become casual friends. Over time, casual friends can become close friends. And the more friends you have, the happier you’ll be. Casual friends may be the secret to a happy life. 8. What are casual friends? A. Friends we see only sometimes. B. Friends we share good times with. C. Friends we often tell our secrets to. D. Friends we have known for a long time. 9. Why are casual friends important as we get older? A. Because we have more time to spend with them. B. Because they are easier to have than close friends. C. Because we have fewer friends and may feel alone. D. Because they share other neighbors’ secrets with us. 10. How do casual friends help us get new ways of thinking? A. By introducing different new ideas to us. B. By making us feel like we are relatives. C. By providing us with more possible jobs. D. By introducing us to their other friends. 11. Which of the following best shows the structure of the text? (p-paragraph) A. B. C. D. D The GIF — or graphics interchange format — has become an important part of today’s meme (表情包) culture. But there have been heated arguments when it comes to the word’s pronunciation. Should it be pronounced with a hard G, as in “give”, or a soft G, as in “gentle”? The argument should have come to an end in 2013, when Steve Wilhite, who invented the GIF in 1987, said in an interview that the right way to pronounce GIF is “JIF”, with a soft G. But people don’t completely agree. Web designer Dan Cederholm once wrote on Twitter: “Graphics Interchange Format. Graphics. Not Jraphics.” This actually has a point. To find out what people really think of the word, a survey (调查) in June by Stack Over flow interviewed over 50,000 Internet users in nearly 200 countries. The results showed that GIF with a hard G is the more widely accepted pronunciation, with 65 percent agreeing with it, while only 26 percent went for the soft G. However, according to The Economist, many people may have chosen the hard G simply because they don’t have a soft G in their language — people who speak Spanish, for example. This could have led to a biased (偏倚的) result. After a correction was made to the survey, the result came out more even, with 44 percent voting for hard G and 32 percent for soft G. The rest of the people actually went for the third choice — saying each letter one by one as “jee eye eff” (/ dɜi:/ /aɪ/ / ef/), which is most common in Asia, especially in China and South Korea. It may look like the hard G is taking the lead in any case. But as The Economist pointed out, “A popular belief isn’t always correct.” The Oxford English Dictionary and Merriam-Webster aren’t picking sides either. They said that both pronunciations are acceptable. So maybe it depends on you. Just choose whichever one that sounds good — or rather, “jood” — to you. 12. According to the article, what was the problem with the survey? A. It didn’t consider influences from the mother languages. B. It misled people to pronounce GIF with a hard G. C. It didn’t consider the influences from their different jobs. D. It only interviewed a small number of countries. 13. After correction, what does the results of the survey show? A. Most people say GIF with a hard G. B. Many people can’t decide the pronunciation. C. Most people say GIF with a soft G. D. Many Asians pronounce GIF letter by letter. 14. Which of the following is TRUE? A. The Oxford English Dictionary shows GIF with a soft G. B. Whether “GIF” or “JIF”, it is up to you to choose. C. About 13000 people went for the hard G in the first survey. D. Spanish people might pronounce GIF as “JIF”. 15. What’s the article mainly about? A. The only right way to pronounce GIF. B. A biased survey by Stack Over flow. C. The arguments over GIF’s pronunciation. D. How different countries pronounce GIFs. 三、任务型阅读(共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分) 阅读下而短文,然后从文后所给的A—E 五个选项中选择正确的选项填入1—4题 (有一项为多余选项),并结合文本内容回答第5题。 A TEAM FOR LIFE A successful team project Sarah successfully completed a science project with her team, and we asked her to share something about it 1. __________ Our class had to do a group project on renewable energy. 11. 【答案】12. A 13. D 14. B 15.
