The girl carefully helped the butterfly out. Instead of flying away, the little butterfly changed into a beautiful fairy (仙女).
“For your wonderful kindness,” said the fairy. “I will grant (保证) you any wish you like.” The little girl thought for a while and replied, “I want to be happy!”
“Very well!” The fairy leaned toward her and whispered in her ear. Then the good fairy disappeared.
As the little girl grew up, she stayed happy. Everyone asked her the secret of her happiness. She would only smile and answer, “the secret of happiness is that I listened to a good fairy when I was a little girl.”
When she was very old and on her death bed, her neighbors were afraid that her secret of happiness would die with her. They begged, “tell us what the good fairy said.”

Floods, droughts (干旱), storms, hot days ... extreme (极端的) weather is becoming more and more common all over the world.
This is caused by greenhouse gas emissions (温室气体排放) from human activities, reported China Daily.
This summer, big storms hit areas of Europe. At least 13 people died in Austria, France and Italy by Aug 19. In Portugal and Spain, huge wildfires have forced thousands to leave their homes.
In the US, more than 80 percent of the west is in drought. Three-quarters of farmers in these areas have stopped growing food.
In China, the heat has hit the south since June. The duration (持续时间) of this year’s high temperatures will break the 62-day record in 2013, becoming the longest heat wave in 61 years.
Extreme weather events are not only killing people and destroying homes, they also drive more people into hunger. Millions in East Africa have little food to eat today, according to the World Health Organization. For four years, there wasn’t enough rain during its rainy seasons and the land was too dry to grow food.
Extreme weather has also made 218 of the known 375 infectious diseases (传染病) more serious, including malaria (疟疾), cholera (霍乱) and anthrax (炭疽), according to the journal Nature Climate Change. As viruses try to adapt to (适应) higher temperatures, they become stronger and harder to kill.
9. What do we know from the China Daily report?
A. The world sees less extreme weather than before.
B. Most extreme weather conditions happen in summer.
C. Human activity has caused more extreme weather.
D. There is no way to stop extreme weather from happening.
10. Why are millions of people suffering from hunger in East Africa?
A. Because wildfires destroyed their crops.
B. Because it didn’t rain at all this year.
C. Because the land is too dry to farm.
D. Because extreme weather killed many farmers.
11. How does extreme weather make diseases more serious?
A. It weakens people’s health.
B. It causes viruses to become stronger.
C. It offers more food to viruses and serious diseases.
D. It increases the number of infectious diseases.
12. What might the writer write after the last paragraph?
A. How extreme weather happens.
B. What we can do to have less extreme weather.
C. The countries that are not affected by extreme weather.
D. The groups who get benefits from extreme weather.

When we were kids, learning polite expressions was important. Our parents taught us to say “thank you” when we received help, and to say “please” when we needed a favor from others. But would you say “thank you” and “please” to a digital (数码的) assistant?
Recently, Amazon announced it had added new features (特点) to its smart assistant Alexa. One of the developments — a politeness feature — draws some parents’ attention. Their children keep forgetting their manners because they have become used to shouting orders at their Echo, a smart speaker similar to Alexa.
When kids ask Alexa to solve a math problem using the word “please” —such as “Alexa, please tell me what 5 plus 7 is” —Alexa will not only give the correct answer, but also give the following response “Thanks for asking so nicely”.
However, some people believe kids shouldn’t thank a machine, as children can tell the difference between machines and humans. But then again, we don’t usually talk aloud to a fridge or an ATM, either.
“I ask my phone assistant to turn on the lights or set an alarm in the same natural language that I use in day-to-day life,” commentator (评论员) Chaim Gartenberg wrote on the website. “It doesn’t matter whether an Echo can hear or understand it — it matters that you say it.”
With the increasing use of AI (artificial intelligence), forming the habit of being polite in everyday life is becoming even more important, as the British research company ChildWise found. In January, it published a report warning that people who become used to cutting courtesies (礼貌) and giving orders to digital assistants might become rude when dealing with others.
Traditionally, we can tell how nice people are by watching how they interact with a waiter. In a similar way, even if the AI or digital assistant doesn’t care about it, other people around us are going to experience how we interact with it.
13. What does the underlined word “announced” in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. said B. decided C. agreed D. ordered

In many western schools, sports day is a big event. Children take part in competitive (竞争性的) sports, trying to break school records and take the first place.
Sports days, or sports meets, are usually held in the warmer seasons, either at the beginning or the end of the school year. They are also called field days.
Primary school sports days are fun. They usually have activities such as the egg-and-spoon race and the sack race. Other events include the skipping race (跳绳) and the three-legged race. In middle and high schools, sports days include many of the common track and field events (田径项目). They are more serious and competitive than primary school ones.
Students’ parents and other relatives also come to the school on sports days. They watch children play. Many schools in the West have “mothers and fathers” races for parents to take part in!
Although sports days are exciting, they also have some problems. According to some reports in the US, sports days have become too competitive to be good for students. Some parents put too much pressure (压力) on the children. Some schools don’t have “mothers and fathers” races any more as there is much fighting and cheating.

Vegetables and fruit and fish are good for us. We shouldn’t eat too much junk food, such as hamburgers and chips. Everyone needs to do some exercise to keep in good health, such as running and playing ball games. We also should avoid using electronic products too much, such as mobile phones and pads.
