“Did you hear what happened to Adam Last Friday?” Lindsey whispers to Tori.
With her eyes shining. Tori brags, “You bet I did, Sean told me two days ago.”
Who are Lindsey and Tori talking about? It just happened to be yours truly. Adam Freedman. I can tell you that what they are saying is not nice and not even true. Still, Lindscy and Tori aren’t very different from most students here at Linton High School, including me. Many of our conversations are gossip(闲话). I have noticed three effects of gossip: it can hurt people, it can give gossipers a strange kind of satisfaction, and it can cause social pressures in a group.
An important negative effect of gossip is that it can hurt the person being talked about. Usually, gossip spreads information about a topic— breakups, trouble at home, even dropping out — at a person would rather keep secret. The more embarrassing or shameful the secret is, the juicier the gossip it makes. Probably the worst type of gossip is the absolute lie. People often think of gossipers as harmless, but cruel lies can cause pain.
If we know that gossip can be harmful, then why do so many of us do it? The answer lies in another effect of gossip: the satisfaction it gives us. Sharing the latest rumor(传言) can make a person feel important because he or she knows something that others don’t. Similarly, hearing the latest rumor can make a person feel like part of the “in group.” In other words, gossip is satisfying because it gives people a sense of belonging or even superiority(优越).
Gossip also can have a third effect: it strengthens unwritten, unspoken rules about how people should act. Professor David Wilson explains that gossip is important in policing behaviors in a group. Translated into high school terms, this means that if everybody you hang around with is laughing at what John wore or what Jane said, then you can bet that wearing or saying something similar will get you the same kind of negative attention. The do’s and don’ts conveyed through gossip will never show up in any student handbook.
The effects of gossip vary depending on the situation. The next time you feel the urge to spread the latest news, think about why you want to gossip and what effects your “juicy story” might have.
4. The author uses a conversation at the beginning of the passage to ______.
A. clarify his writing purpose B. present an argument
C. describe the characters D. introduce a topic
5 An important negative effect of gossip is that it ______.
A. causes unpleasant experiences B. embarrasses the listener
C. spreads information around D. breaks up relationships
6. Professor David Wilson thinks that gossip can ______.
A. help people watch their own behaviors
B. provide students with written rules
C. force school to improve student handbooks
D. attract the police’s attention to group behaviors
7. What advice does the author give in the last paragraph?
A. Never become a gossiper. B. Think twice before you gossip.
C. Don’t let gossip turn into lies. D. Stay away from gossipers.
C
Elizabeth Spelke, a cognitive (认知的) psychologist at Harvard, has spent her career testing the world's most complex learning system-the mind of a baby. Babies might seem like no match for artificial intelligence (AI). They are terrible at labeling images, hopeless at mining text, and awful at video games. Then again, babies can do things beyond the reach of any AI. By just a few months old, they’ve begun to grasp the foundations of language, such as grammar. They’ve started to understand how to adapt to unfamiliar situations.
Yet even experts like Spelke don’t understand precisely how babies — or adults, for that matter — learn. That gap points to a puzzle at the heart of modern artificial intelligence: We're not sure what to aim for.
Consider one of the most impressive examples of AI, Alpha Zero, a programme that plays board games with superhuman skill. After playing thousands of games against itself at a super speed, and learning from winning positions, Alpha Zero independently discovered several famous chess strategies and even invented new ones. It certainly seems like a machine eclipsing human cognitive abilities. But Alpha Zero needs to play millions more games than a person during practice to learn a game. Most importantly, it cannot take what it has learned from the game and apply it to another area.
To some AI experts, that calls for a new approach. In a November research paper, Francois Chollet, a well-known AI engineer, argued that it’s misguided to measure machine intelligence just according to its skills at specific tasks. “Humans don’t start out with skills; they start out with a broad ability to acquire new skills,” he says. “What a strong human chess player is demonstrating is not only the ability to play chess, but the potential to fulfill any task of a similar difficulty.” Chollet posed a set of problems, each of which requires an AI programme to arrange colored squares on a grid (格栅) based on just a few prior examples. It’s not hard for a person. But modern machine-learning programmes-trained on huge amounts of data — cannot learn from so few examples.
Josh Tenenbaum, a professor in MIT's Center for Brains, Minds & Machines, works closely with Spelke and uses insights from cognitive science as inspiration for his programmes. He says much of modern AI misses the bigger picture, comparing it to a cartoon about a two-dimensional world populated by simple geometrical (几何形的) people. AI programmes will need to learn in new ways — for example, by drawing causal inferences rather than simply finding patterns. “At some point — you know, if you’re intelligent — you realize maybe there's something else out there,” he says.
8. Compared to an advanced AI programme, a baby might be better at _______________.
A. labeling images B. identifying locations
C. playing games D. making adjustments
9. What does the underlined word “eclipsing” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Stimulating. B. Measuring. C. Beating. D. Limiting.
10. Both Francois Chollet and Josh Tenenbaum may agree that _______________.
A. AI is good at finding similar patterns
B. AI should gain abilities with less training
C. AI lacks the ability of generalizing a skill
D. AI will match humans in cognitive ability
11. Which would be the best title for this passage?
A. What is exactly intelligence?
B. Why is modern AI advanced?
C. Where is human intelligence going?
D. How do humans tackle the challenge of AI?
D
The natural world provides humans with essential services. For instance, forests channel water into rivers that irrigate crops while their roots prevent landslides. Over decades, therefore, governments have made promises about preserving the world’s biodiversity.
However, those promises have been broken many times, which has caused the depressing destruction of natural environments. One step towards avoiding yet more disappointment is to emphasize the close link between preserving biodiversity and the widely held goal of reaching net-zero carbon emissions. Unfortunately, less known is the link between them.
Given that biodiversity has an important role in meeting these carbon-reduction goals, you might think it would feature highly in the net- emissions plans. Not so. For example, faced with tighter regulation of emissions, many companies are now channeling more time and cash to their firms’ carbon footprints reduction and energy transition, yet the plans have too little to say about biodiversity.
That needs to change. Sale guarding biodiversity is an efficient way to control carbon emissions. Companies and investment firms should pay more attention to the opportunities from preserving ecosystems. By investing in biodiversity—directing capital to projects that repair an ecosystem—companies can offset (抵消) their emissions. By some estimates, projects to manage carbon-rich wetlands and to reforest cleared and could provide more than one-third of the emissions reductions that are needed to prevent more than 2°C of global warming.
Key to managing more capital is better measurement so that the link between investment in natural projects, biodiversity and carbon is made clear. Today some so-called carbon-offset projects that involve firms paying money to are questionable and not supported by evidence. Better guidelines and practice can help and so can new technology. Drones and satellites can improve the measurement of biodiversity and accounting systems can measure how spending on biodiversity compares with pouring cash into other kinds of carbon management.
12. What do we know about biodiversity?
A. Its importance is undervalued. B. Its link with carbon emissions is clear.
C. It is the source of carbon dioxide. D. I gets promised benefits from governments.
13. Why is “many companies” mentioned in paragraph 3?
A. To clarify a rule. B. To make a conclusion.
C. To explain a plan. D. To support an opinion.
14. What is the benefit of safeguarding biodiversity?
A. Rebuilding wetlands. B. Redirecting capital.
C. Cutting carbon emissions. D. Transforming energy.
15. What message does the writer convey in the text?
A. The natural world deserves more investment.
B. The key to managing capital is new regulations.
C. It is hard to achieve net-zero carbon emissions.
D. It is worthwhile spending money on clean energy.

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
“Watch out! You nearly broadsided that car!” My father yelled at me. “Can’t you do anything right?” Those words hurt worse than blows. I turned my head toward the elderly man in the seat beside me. A lump rose in my throat as I averted my eyes. I wasn’t prepared for another quarrel. “I saw the car Dad. Please don’t yell at me when I’m driving.” My voice was measured and steady, sounding far calmer than I really felt. Dad glared at me, and then turned away and settled back.
That night I went outside to collect my thoughts. What could I do about him? Dad had been a lumberjack (伐木工人) in Washington and Oregon. He had enjoyed being outdoors using his strength against the forces of nature. The first time he couldn’t lift a heavy log, he joked about it; but later that same day I saw him outside alone, struggling to lift it. He became angry whenever anyone teased him about his advancing age, or when he couldn’t do something he had done as a younger man.
Four days after his sixty-seventh birthday, he had a heart attack. An ambulance sped him to the hospital. At the hospital, Dad was rushed into an operating room. He was lucky; he survived. But something inside Dad died. His enthusiasm for life was gone. He refused to follow the doctor’s orders. Suggestions and offers of help were turned down with bad words. The number of visitors thinned, and then finally stopped altogether. Dad was left alone.
My husband, Dick, and I asked Dad to come and live with us on our small farm. We hoped the fresh air and rustic atmosphere would help him adjust. Within a week after he moved in, I regretted the invitation. It seemed that nothing was satisfactory. He criticized everything I did. I became upset. Soon I was taking my anger out on Dick. We began to argue. Luckily, Dick had a friend who was a mental health expert. After he listened to our story, he recommended that we should find a dog to accompany Dad. I thought maybe I should have a try.
(1)所续写短文的同数应为150左右;
(2)请按如下格式作答。
I drove to the animal shelter and was led to the kennels (狗舍) by a keeper.

【答案】Dear Jem
I understand the struggle to find time for reading amid a busy schedule. It’s okay to feel overwhelmed. I have some suggestions that I hope will be helpful. First, try making reading a daily habit, even 15-30 minutes a day can make a difference. Additionally, use short breaks between classes or waiting times to sneak in some reading. Small pockets of time can add up. You’re not alone, and finding this balance takes time. Let me know how these tips work for you or if there’s anything else I can do to help.
Yours,
Li Hua

【答案】I drove to the animal shelter and was led to the kennels (狗舍) by a keeper. Each cage contained five to seven dogs. Long-haired dogs, curly-haired dogs, black dogs and spotted dogs all jumped up, trying to reach me. I studied each one but rejected one after another for various reasons: too big, too small, too much hair and so on. As I approached an old dog, his eyes caught my attention. Calm and clear, they were telling me that he was waiting for my arrival. I made an immediate decision that I would bring it home for Dad.
“Dad! Look what I got for you, Dad!” I said excitedly. Dad, however, wasn’t that excited as I had expected. With days going by, he accepted the new family member gradually. He even named the dog Cherry, with whom he spent long hours walking down the country road, exploring the community. Cherry grew to be an inseparable companion throughout the next three years. Dad’s bitterness faded, his enthusiasm for life restored. Dick and I were happy to find our “former” Dad back. The special experience enlightened me that company is the most important for the elderly.
