Airports can be stressful, and they’re made even more so when something unexpected happens. One morning at Gate 17 of a busy international airport, a father stood in line, holding his little daughter’s hand tightly. The kid’s eyes shone with excitement, curious about the complexities of air travel. The man, however, wore a look of concern. He handed over their passports and travel documents to the airline agent.
“Sir, I’m sorry, but your daughter will need her own ticket for the flight,” the agent explained.
The father’s face turned pale. He had assumed that his 2-year-old daughter’s age exempted (免除) her from needing a separate ticket. The cost of the extra ticket was $749-a sum he hadn’t accounted for. He attempted to explain his situation, but the rules were clear, and the agent’s hands were tied. The father left the counter, excusing himself to make a few phone calls. He needed to figure out a solution, his mind racing to find a way to secure his daughter’s seat on the flight.
As he paced up and down in the hall and made one call after another, a gentle voice broke through his trouble. “Excuse me,” a stranger said softly, standing before the airline counter. The agent looked at her, not sure if she was a fellow traveler or a friend of the father’s family. The woman said, “I would like to pay for the little girl’s ticket.” The agent was accustomed to dealing with a variety of passengers and their unique challenges, but this time she was momentarily taken aback by the woman’s unexpected offer. Her eyes shifted from the woman to the father, who was still on the phone.
Then, with a nod, she turned back to her computer and processed the transaction (业务) . Soon, the transaction was complete and the agent handed the lady’s credit card back.

【答案】One possible version :
The father ended his call and returned to the counter with a heavy heart. He was about to explain to the agent that he needed more time to sort out the issue when she turned to him with a smile and said, “ Your daughter’s ticket has been taken care of by that lady.” Confusion and thankfulness played across the father’s face. He followed the direction of the agent’s hand and spotted the departing woman. He caught up with her, thanked her and asked for her name so he could repay her later. “You don’t need to worry about repaying me,” she said softly. “Just take care of your little one.” Tears welled up in the father’s eyes after he heard the woman’s kind words. He insisted on knowing her name and somehow repaying this selfless act. But the woman shook her head, saying,“ We all need some help sometimes. I’m grateful to have the chance to do somebody a favour.” The father nodded, feeling a connection with a stranger who had restored his faith in the kindness of humanity. The woman’s act of generosity touched everyone who bore witness, reminding them that wherever they might be, there is always someone who genuinely cares about others.

School was over, the day was fading and it started to rain. I stood at the school gate, with a loaded backpack on my shoulders. It was Friday again — a weekend of joy with unlimited sleeping hours and dinner courses specially made to my taste. I waved goodbye to my friends as they jumped into their fathers’ warm and comfortable cars. Curiously, this gave rise to a disturbing feeling in me. It was not exactly what they called jealousy, but something like depression. I knew all 1 could expect was an old bike Mom would ride along on, with the badly-oiled chain creaking against the wheel to announce her arrival.
Every Friday when Mom came to pick me up, it was a moment full of great expectation and great unease. I always felt my face burning as we rode our way in and out of the cars and saw my friends’ faces sticking out of the car windows. It was like stepping into a ballroom with beautifully dressed ladies and finding yourself in a smelly T-shirt.
To tell you the truth, Mom is quite a headache occasionally. She looks like a homely middle-aged housewife. She knits most of my sweaters, chiefly in old styles. Whenever caught by some curious classmates asking what brand my sweaters are, I’d force a smile and reply in a half-joking manner: homemade. She simply doesn’t seem to understand what’s in fashion; Chanel or Gucci means nothing to her.
I couldn’t remember when l started to find her such an embarrassment. As a little boy, I relied on her so much. She had been working at home, cooking in the kitchen, knitting by the lamp, or riding across town to buy me a book 1 badly needed. It had always been fun riding with her. I had enjoyed watching our shadows growing longer and shorter in an alternate fashion by the light of the streetlamps along the road. Just now there seemed to be something standing between us, something that made her so strange to me and me to her.

After college graduation, I became an editor of our city evening paper and was promoted to the deputy(副的) editor of the paper five years later.
One day, as I parked my car and walked towards the office, I noticed two boys who appeared to be around eight years old, selling popcorn on the street corner. Curious, I approached them and requested half a kilogram of popcorn. They prepared it for me within five minutes.
“How much is it?”I asked.
“It’s 30 rupees, sir.” they replied.
I then asked their names, and they answered, “Sahib, Asib.”
I asked Sahib why they weren’t in school and were selling popcorn instead. Sahi b explained that they were doing it to earn money for their schooling. However, Asib quickly interjected(插话), saying they had no money left after covering food and medicine, not to mention schooling fees.
“Medicine for what? You guys are looking well,” I said.
Asib replied, “Our mother has a kidney(肾) disease, so we need money to purchase medicine for her treatment.”
When I inquired about their father, Sahi b sadly shared that he had passed away from cancer four years before, leaving their mother to support them with two jobs. I was deeply moved and struggled to find words. Before leaving, I asked whether they would be there the next day, intending to buy some then. They assured me they would come.
“Take care, boys,” I said as I left.
The next day, I returned to the spot where I had met Sahib and Asib the day before, but they were not selling popcorn as usual, standing there with a single bag of popcorn. Seeing in their eyes that their hearts broke because of sadness, I asked why and they explained that they had been waiting for me but had to leave because their mother’s health had got worse.

After graduating from college, I worked as a salesman for a piano company. We advertised our pianos in small town newspapers and then, when we received many replies, we would load our little trucks, drive into the area and sell the pianos to those who had replied. Every time we advertised, we would receive a reply on a postcard which said, “Please bring me a new piano for my little granddaughter. It must be red mahogany(红木). I can pay $10 a month with my egg money.” Of course, we could not sell a new piano for $10 a month. No finance company would carry a contract with payments that small, so we ignored her postcards.
One day, however, I happened to be in that area calling on other replies, and out of curiosity I decided to meet the old lady. I found pretty much what I expected: The old lady lived in a one-room cabin in the middle of a cotton field. The cabin had a dirt floor and there were chickens in the house. Obviously, she could not have qualified to purchase anything on credit—no car, no phone, no real job, nothing but a roof over her head. I could see daylight through the roof in several places.
Her little granddaughter was about 8, barefoot and wearing a dress made out of cotton bags holding animal feed. I explained to the old lady that we could not sell a new piano for $10 a month and that she should stop writing to us every time she saw our advertisement.
I drove away heartsick, but my advice had no effect—she still sent us the same postcard every time we advertised. Always wanting a new piano, red mahogany, she swore she would never miss a$10 payment. It was sad.
Several years later, I owned my own piano company, and each time I advertised in that area, the old lady’s postcards would come to me.

【答案】One day when I was in the area, I made a big decision. Despite knowing that it was a terrible business decision, I loaded a red mahogany piano onto my little truck. I delivered the piano to the old lady. I placed the new piano in the house, advised her and the little girl to keep the chickens off it and left. I was sure that I had just thrown away a new piano. To my surprise, the payments came in on time with a thank-you note every month.
Twenty years later while sitting at a bar. I heard the most beautiful piano music behind me. Looking around, I saw a lovely young woman playing a very nice grand piano. Stunned by her great performance, I moved to a table beside her. She stopped and smiled at me politely, “Aren’t you the man who sold my grandma a piano a long time ago?” It didn’t ring a bell, so she started to explain. And I suddenly remembered., My Lord, it was her, the little barefoot girl in the feed sack dress! I was so glad that my kindness did make a real difference.

It was a sunny Friday afternoon. My assignment was to record the 400-meter race in the sports meet. All the students in our class were sitting anxiously except one, a tall handsome boy named Tommy who was considered the one most likely to win the race. Even, unlike other competitors, he was quite relaxed, standing beside the track and stretching himself.
“Tommy! I bet you’ll win.” I yelled at him. “Just wait and see!” A big smile spread across his face.
“May I have your attention, please? All the athletes are requested to proceed to the registration office.” A gentle voice caught our attention.
“Tommy, your show time!” I shouted and gave him a thumb-up.
Then, I saw all the athletes went to register, preparing for the game. Soon they were all on the starting line. Taking the best recording location, I raised my smartphone, ready to shoot.
With the loud sound of the starting gun, all the competitors threw themselves forwards from the starting line like arrows. Tommy quickly took the lead with his excellent explosive power from long-term training. But there was one problem for me-I had to spare every effort to control my excitement in order to keep my shooting picture stable.
“Come on, Tommy!” Still, I could hear the cheers of our classmates higher and higher. It seemed that Tommy had heard the powerful shouts and became full of strength. He kept adjusting his breath, maintaining a steady rhythm, and approaching the finish line step by step.
Finally, with the cheers of the audience, Tommy crossed the finish line almost at the same time with the second-place finisher. How I wish I could rush to him and give him a big bear hug! But I could not. I had to finish recording the whole race, so I waited until the last competitor crossed the finish line. Suddenly, I noticed there was an unusual noise from the crowd.

Tommy was ranked second on the scoreboard. Feeling puzzled, Tommy immediately found the judge and pointed out this mistake politely. However, the second-place finisher insisted he was the winner. No one could tell exactly what had happened. Tommy was at a loss what to do, feeling frustrated. Then it suddenly occurred to me that I had recorded the whole process. Rushing to the judge, I showed him the video, which clarified the fact that it was Tommy who first arrived.
The judge admitted the error and announced Tommy was the real champion. After learning the truth, the audience broke into thunderous applause. Tommy shouldered his way through the crowd, gate ring me in his arms with a proud smile on his face. We both knew this was not just a victory of a race, but also a victory of sticking to the truth and daring to fight for it in the face of injustice.

After flying all night, I was tired as I arrived in Denver to hold an event on positive thinking. As I entered the lecture hall, Dr. Fred Vogt asked me, “Do you know about the Make-A-Wish Foundation?” “Yes,” I replied. “Well, a 17-year-old girl Amy Graham has been diagnosed as having terminal (晚期的) cancer. Doctors gave her three days. Her dying wish was to attend your lecture.”
I was shocked. I felt a combination of awe and doubt. I couldn’t believe it. I thought kids who were dying would want to go see Disneyland, or suchlike. Why would a kid with only a few days to live want to spend their final days listening to a motivational speaker? Suddenly my thoughts were interrupted…
“Here’s Amy.” Before me stood a girl wearing a bright red hat to cover her head, which was bald from all of the treatments. Her weak body was a bit bent. She said, “My two goals were to graduate from high school and to attend your lecture. My doctors didn’t believe I could do either and they didn’t think I’d have enough energy. I have to rely on my parents now.”
Tears welled in my eyes; I was choked up. My mind was being shaken. I cleared my throat and smiled, “Thanks for wanting to come.” We hugged, wiped our eyes and separated.
That Sunday afternoon I held the workshop that Amy and her parents attended. The audience was packed to overflowing with over a thousand attendees eager to learn, grow and become more fully human. I humbly asked the audience if they wanted to learn a healing process that might serve them for life. From the stage it appeared that everyone’s hand was raised high in the air. I taught the audience how to vigorously (用力地) rub their hands together, separate them by two inches and feel the healing energy. Then I paired them off with a partner to feel the healing energy from themselves to another, explaining that everyone had healing potential to support others.

【答案】At that point an idea struck me. I said to the audience, “This morning I was introduced to Amy Graham, a 17-year-old. I want to bring her up here and let you all send healing life energy toward her.” Supported by her father, Amy stepped onto the stage, looking frail from an absolute lack of exercise. She talked about what she was suffering from and her final wish to be at this workshop. Touched by her story, the audience spontaneously warmed up their hands and engaged in the simple exercise, after which they gave her a tearful standing ovation.
With a round of applause, Amy’s dad led her off the stage. At that moment, the workshop became more than just a lecture on positive thinking — it showed the power of hope and the resilience of the human spirit. After the workshop concluded, attendees lingered, sharing stories and exchanging contact information. Many approached Amy and her parents, offering words of encouragement. It was clear that something extraordinary had taken place — a blend of hope, belief, and the courage to confront adversity with positivity. Before leaving, Amy thanked me for the unexpected invitation, which was a real bonus for her and gave her the healing power beyond physical remedies.

Kerry and Tyler were orphans (孤儿). They met each other after college and got married. Unfortunately, after they had a baby daughter, Tyler lost his legs in an accident. Money became so tight. Since the pregnancy, Kerry had quit her job. Now, she had to go back to work. And Tyler tried to take care of the baby.
Kerry found a job at a restaurant. One colleague, Jane, became Kerry’s good friend. She was a cheerful old woman and often joined Kerry’s family for Sunday lunch at their home. One Sunday, after they finished lunch, they began chatting. Kerry said, “I want to buy a stroller (婴儿手推车),but it’s so expensive.” “Yes, it’ll cost you much if you buy a brand-new one. But my neighbor’s daughter bought a pretty stroller at a flea market just for $50. How about going to such a market together next weekend?” said Jane. Kerry nodded happily.
During the following days, Jane thought about how she could help Kerry’s family. Then she made a big decision: to leave much of her wealth obtained throughout the years to Kerry. But she was afraid that Kerry wouldn’t accept it. Then one night, Jane secretly went to House 8, an abandoned house on Third Avenue, and buried her wealth under the apple tree there.
After returning home, she wrote a letter. It read, “If you’re reading this, you’re probably a struggling young mom like I was. I had a beautiful daughter. But she died young and my husband didn’t survive the loss. She would be your age if she were alive. I hope you are happy, my dear. I can bring some positive changes to your life. Go to House 8 on Third Avenue and look for an apple tree, and you’ll have some surprises. You needn’t know who I am. I’ll soon leave this city and move to my hometown to spend the rest of my life alone.”
The next weekend, Jane and Kerry went to the flea market (跳蚤市场). And Kerry found a lovely old stroller. When Jane helped check it, she secretly put the letter in the stroller.

On Monday morning I wore my favourite dress to school for the first time since I had started at Edison Middle School. I said good morning to our headmaster, Mr. Jordan, at the school entrance. With a genuine smile that reached his eyes, he greeted me by name, inquiring about my weekend and showing a sincere interest in my day ahead.
That was really comforting! It was the day of the poetry festival. and I was excited. At my old school, I had won the poetry award every year. I’m horrible at sports, and too shy to be popular—but І do write good poetry, although I never told anyone here about it yet.
The poem I wrote for the Edison Festival was about my dad. I wished I would surprise my classmates and Mrs. Baker, my English teacher.
When Mrs. Baker called on me, I was so nervous that I had to swallow about ten times before I could speak. But once I started, I didn’t even bother to look at my paper. I’d spent so much time perfecting the rhymes that I knew the poem by heart.
I had just started the third line when I noticed Mrs. Baker’s expression change. She looked at me with a mixture of appreciation and disbelief. I stopped in the middle of a word and waited for her to say something.
“Linda, you are supposed to be reading a poem you made up yourself, not reciting something you learned. That is called plagiarism(剽窃)!”
“Oh, but it’s an original one. I did make it up, it’s about my dad.” I heard a “Yeah, right!” from somewhere behind me, and someone else laughed. I opened my mouth to explain, but no words came out.
“Perhaps you could step out and gather your thoughts, and when you feel ready, we can discuss this with a clear mind,” said Mrs. Baker.
I’d been standing outside for 5 minutes when Mr. Jordan came over to ask me what happened.

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】Almost in tears, I poured out the whole story. With a lump in my throat, I explained how much I loved poetry and that I had never even considered plagiarizing. Mr. Jordan listened attentively, nodding occasionally as I spoke. When I finished, he smiled gently and reassured me that it was okay to feel sad, “Sharing your creativity is a brave thing to do, Linda,” he said warmly. “Even if it didn’t go as planned, your courage is admirable. Remember, talent like yours is a gift. Trust in your own abilities and let your work speak for itself.” His words comforted me, giving me a sense of affirmation I desperately needed in that moment of doubt and frustration.
Inspired by his words, I gathered my courage and turned back to the classroom. Mrs. Baker looked up as I entered, her expression now softened with understanding. Taking a deep breath, I assured everyone the poem was indeed my own creation and explained how I had crafted the poem about my father with love and care, “I’d like to recite it again,” I said with determination. This time, I recited the poem slowly and clearly, letting the emotions behind the words flow naturally. As I finished, there was a moment of silence before applause broke out, genuine and warm. “Sorry for the misunderstanding and thank you for sharing that,” Mrs. Baker said sincerely, “Your poem is really touching.” The tension lifted, and I felt a sense of pride knowing that I did surprise my classmates and Mrs. Baker.

“It’s a perfect day for fishing!” Michael heard his father, Andrew, say as he set up their equipment on the bank of a river. “Yeah!” Michael responded. Once Andrew finished setting up, they sat down to fish.
Michael gladly looked at the river, where the waves waved in and out every so often. It was peaceful there. “Next time, we can also swim here,” the boy told his father, who nodded in agreement. Then, they kept silent in case the noise scared the fish away.
An hour later, Andrew’s phone rang. “Hello?” he answered, and after listening for a few seconds, he pulled the phone down to look at Michael. “Son, this is an important call. I’m going to be by the trees over there. Be careful.”
Andrew walked a few steps away, and Michael watched him until he saw his dad pacing around the same spot. The little boy then watched their fishing poles carefully in case there was any movement.
But something strange caught Michael’s attention. From a distance, he saw something moving in the water, and at first, he thought someone was swimming. But soon enough, the boy realized it was a dog, and the poor pet appeared to have been caught in a current that started pulling it away. “Oh, no! Dad! Dad!” Michael shouted, but Andrew couldn’t hear his cries from that distance. The current started pulling the dog further, and Michael panicked. He had no idea what to do and wanted to run to his father, but he stopped when he spotted a swim ring among their equipment.
Andrew brought it in case Michael wanted to swim, although their plan was always to just fish. The little boy stared at it, looked up, and saw the dog still struggling. Thinking it might be drowning (淹死), he made a very quick decision.
Taking the swim ring and taking off his shoes, Michael ran toward the water and started swimming to reach the dog. His mother took him to swimming lessons every week, so he considered himself good. However, he had yet to go through such deep water, which was scary.

【答案】Paragraph 1:
But Michael had to do something to help the dog. He took advantage of every swim skill he had learned and swam toward the dog. Finally, Michael reached the pet and encouraged it to catch the ring. The poor dog seemed tired, and Michael tried to swim towards the shore, but it wasn’t easy. The current kept pulling them back, and he had no idea whether they would make it. After what seemed like a lifetime, they finally reached the shore. Michael quickly dried the dog with a towel. It was then that Andrew ended his phone call and went back.
Paragraph 2:
Seeing Michael was wet with a dog sitting beside him, Andrew was shocked. Hearing Michael’s explanation, Andrew started to get angry and said, “Michael, it was so dangerous! You could have drowned!” Michael lowered his head and realized his mistake, crying to apologize. Seeing it, Andrew patted his head and hugged him, saying,” Although I still think it was dangerous, I’m proud of you for saving the dog. But before doing something kind and brave, just ensure your safety first. Promise me.” Michael nodded happily. Then, they went home together with the dog following closely.

In one summer afternoon, Richard walked to a nearby town for fun. An hour later, he noticed a little bike lying beside the road. And a small pink water bottle was lying nearby. He leaned closer and noticed fresh little muddy footprints disappearing into the woods. “What would a kid be doing here all alone?” Richard was puzzled.
Anxious, he followed the footprints and walked into the forest. Richard sensed something was wrong, so he called out repeatedly, “Hello, anyone there?” Finally, he heard a faint cry from the heart of the woods. It was a little girl’s cry for help. “Help... I’m stuck...” the girl replied. “I’m coming. Hold on!” Richard yelled back. As he approached nearer and nearer, he heard a trickling (小股流淌的) sound at a distance and then a loud roar. “Oh, my goodness!” he whispered.
Tree branches turned around on the muddy-brown river; the strong current rushed through the rocks. “Don’t give up! I’m coming!” he screamed after noticing a little girl and a dog holding onto a log floating on the river. The girl ended up being stuck there after trying to save her dog which ran away from home and fell into the river.
The current was washing away everything on its course. Although the girl was lucky the log was stuck onto something under the surface, that wouldn’t hold on for long as the current grew faster and stronger.
Richard was running out of time. He couldn’t think of anything immediately. He didn’t know how to pull the two out to the shore before they were washed toward the edge of the waterfall, which was just meters away. “HELP!” the girl screamed again. Just then, Richard’s mind acted fast, and he ran back to get something. “Hold on! I’ll be right back,” he replied.
Moments later, Richard returned with a very long, thick jungle vine (藤). He had one end of the vine tied around his waist and had the other end around a tree near the river.

【答案】He jumped into the river and swam toward them. The current was stronger than he had expected, and since the water was muddy, he could not see clearly. But he kept going, swimming through the fierce water. As he neared the struggling pair, he reached out with one arm, grabbing the dog’s collar while using his other hand to steady the log. The dog screamed in surprise but stopped struggling, sensing the help. With the dog secure, Richard turned his attention to the girl. She was pale and shivering. With a mighty effort, he wrapped his arm around her waist, pulling her close to him.
“Hold me tight!” he said, carrying the girl in the water. The girl’s arms wrapped around his neck, her grip tight and desperate. Richard kicked harder, using all his strength to battle the raging river. Inch by inch, they made progress. Finally, they made it to the shore. Exhausted, they lay onto the bank, coughing up water and gasping for breath. The dog shook the water off, rubbing against Richard’s face to show gratitude. The girl looked at him, tears rolling down her face, and whispered, “Thank you.” Richard was glad that he showed up and saved them in time.
