B On a Saturday in November, Annacarin Elf, the head of Gothenburg City Library, just happened to walk by her workplace. Noticing that the door was unlocked, she entered the library, and was surprised that people were using it like on a regular day. However, it was scheduled to be closed for the November 4 All Saints’ Day holiday, dedicated to remembering the dearly departed and for spending time with family. “In the library, many were sitting reading newspapers, some families were in the children’s section and others were searching for books on the computer,” Elf told The Local. It seemed that Elf’s colleagues had simply forgotten to lock the door, and because this popular library is usually open on Saturdays, people just assumed they could walk in. Elf called to check with her staff team, before announcing that the library was about to close. The visitors calmly shut their books and left, some taking their books with them. It later demonstrated that 446 locals visited the city library, borrowing a total of 246 books during the day. What’s remarkable is that clients checked out their books via the library’s electronic self-service system, and that to date, all the books have been returned! While Elf did express surprise that the library seemed emptier than usual, due to the lack of staff, she highly praised the care shown by locals: “Nothing was destroyed. It’s amazing that Gothenburgers enter an empty library and treat it so lovingly.” The library itself was quick to show its support in an appreciative post with “Thank you for Saturday, dear Gothenburg.” This story really attracted Swedes, going viral in the country. They were moved by this community’s respect for the books and equipment of what is a treasured community resource. The Mayor EU has even suggested that this unusual Saturday serves as an experiment of the possibility of operating a totally automated library. 24.Why did Elf enter the library on Saturday? A.She was doing some research. B.She forgot that it was a holiday. C.The library was accidentally left open. D.The library was usually open on Saturdays. 25.What did the visitors do in the library? A.They behaved normally as usual. B.They held family party in the library. C.They checked the self-service system. D.They volunteered to serve as librarians. 26.What wins the heart of Swedes in this story? A.The honest community spirit. B.The library’s appreciation to visitors. C.The community’s treasured resources. D.The library’s unusual Saturday service. 27.What can be the best title of the text? A.A Library Looked Up To The Bookworms B.A Library Operated An Unusual Experiment C.A Library Can Bring Out The Best In People D.A Library Was Open For All Saints’ Day Holiday C In the days before the Internet, critical thinking was the most important skill that informed citizens could have. To think critically, you need to read carefully, consider the credibility of sources, and reason out conclusions on your own. But right now, according to Anastasia Kozyreva, a psychologist at the Max Planck Institute of Human Development, and her colleagues, we live in an “attention economy” in which corporations compete for our attention, emotion and time. They lure (诱惑) us in with stories that stimulate our emotions while providing little useful information, all so they can expose us to revenue-generating advertisements. To protect ourselves from attention manipulation online, we need to develop new ways of interacting with information. Kozyreva and colleagues advocate for learning the skill of critical ignoring, and point out that we can practice critical ignoring with the following tools. The first strategy is self-nudging. This involves avoiding low-quality information so that we have more quality time for ourselves. It also calls for the removal of distracting and hard-to-resist stimuli from the environment around us. Of course, we need to stay informed of world events and in touch with others, so we can’t just ignore the Internet altogether. Then when you do go into social media, you’d better set time limits. Limiting yourself in this way prevents you from losing track of time as you click on one attractive link after another. It’s also a good idea not to use Internet time as a reward so that you’ll lessen its appeal. Another strategy is lateral reading. It involves opening up new browser tabs (标签) to find more about the source of the information, whether it is the site of a mainstream news agency or a lesser-known one, before diving into its contents. Only after consulting the open web can we determine whether expending attention is worth it. Likewise, it’s also good to check the source of the information in an Internet post. Headlines are often deceiving. They’re designed to attract attention, not provide information. A sensational claim may provide a link with a headline that seems to support it, but a careful reading of the original source shows it doesn’t. 28.What does Kozyreva say about “attention economy”? A.It can cause people emotional problems. B.It sacrifices our time and concern for profit. C.It has led to a great variety of advertisements. D.It draws people’s attention to useful information. 29.What are we advised to do to train our critical ignoring skills? A.Limit our sources of information. B.Read as many books as possible. C.Control our time on the Internet. D.Get in touch with people around us. 30.What does the underlined word “deceiving” in the last paragraph probably mean? A.Inspiring. B.Entertaining. C.Puzzling. D.Misleading. 31.What does the text mainly talk about? A.How to avoid falling victim to false information. B.How to use the Internet without getting distracted. C.How to practice critical ignoring in the digital age. D.How to find high-quality information on the Internet. D A bird thought to be extinct for about 140 years has been rediscovered in the forests of Papua New Guinea. The black-naped pheasant-pigeon was documented by scientists for the first and last time in 1882. Rediscovering the bird required an expedition team to spend a month on Fergusson, an island off eastern Papua New Guinea. The team consisted of local staff at the Papua New Guinea National Museum as well as international scientists. Fergusson Island is covered in mountainous terrain (地形) which makes the expedition especially challenging for the scientists. Just two days before the team was scheduled to leave the island, a camera trap captured footage of the rare bird. “After a month of searching, seeing those photos of the pheasant-pigeon felt like finding a unicorn (独角兽),” said John C. Mittermeier, co-leader of the expedition team. Insight from local residents was crucial for the scientists to track down the bird. “It wasn’t until we reached villages on the western slope of Mt. Kilkerran that we started meeting hunters who had seen and heard the pheasant-pigeon,” said Jason Gregg, another co-leader of the expedition team.” We became more confident about the local name of the bird, which is ‘Auwo’, and felt like we were getting closer to the core habitat of where the bird lives.” The scientists placed a total of 12 camera traps on the slopes of Mt. Kilkerran, which is Fergusson’s highest mountain. And they placed another 8 cameras in locations where local hunters reported seeing the bird in the past. A hunter named Augustin Gregory, based in the mountain village Duda Ununa, told the team that he had seen the bird in an area with “steep ridges and valleys”. So the team placed a camera on a 3,200-foothigh ridge near the Kwama River above Duda Ununa. Finally, it was this camera that captured footage of the bird walking on the forest floor. The rediscovery was a shock for the scientists and local residents. “They were very excited when they saw the survey results, because many of them hadn’t seen or heard of the bird until we began our project and got the camera trap photos. They are now looking forward to working with us to protect the bird,” said Jason Gregg. “But first we will work together to identify the population of the bird.” And the rediscovery might provide hope that other bird species thought to be extinct are still out there somewhere. 32.What can we infer about Fergusson from paragraph 2? A.It is known for its biological diversity. B.It is the largest island of Papua New Guinea. C.It is where the bird was originally documented. D.It is the site of the Papua New Guinea National Museum. 33.What did John C. Mittermeier show in his words in paragraph 3? A.His despair of rediscovering the bird. B.The unique value of studying the bird. C.The difficulty in photographing the bird. D.His excitement of rediscovering the bird. 34.Why is Augustin Gregory particularly mentioned in the text? A.He acted as the team’s tour guide. B.He was quite familiar with the bird. C.He provided the team with a key clue. D.He told the team the bird’s local name. 35.What may the team plan to do next? A.Look for other rare bird species. B.Figure out the number of the bird. C.Improve locals’ protection awareness. D.Work with local hunters to catch the bird. Living and studying abroad can be a rewarding and enriching experience. And living with a host family is one of the best ways to immerse yourself in its culture. However, living with a foreign family can be difficult and adjusting to it can take some effort. 36 Involve yourself in family activities. If you spend all your time in your room, it’s going to be hard to feel like you belong. Getting involved in everyday activities with your host family will help you create a family bond. For example, some families like having dinner together on weekends. 37 Not only will they appreciate it but you will also feel like a part of their world. Be patient with yourself. Keep in mind that you’ve just left everything you’ve known for years behind to start a new life. It’s okay to be confused. 38 While you may know the language, some expressions and slang can be hard to grasp at first. Take it easy. Remember you will adapt but it will take some time. Communication is key. If you are unsure about something, ask! It’s normal to know few customs and habits at first. 39 Your host family will understand and help you. It’s also normal not to know a lot about unspoken social rules of the country. 40 You have to understand that host families are not just providing a roof over your head. They are making significant changes to their daily routines. Thank them for their kindness, patience and understanding. Let them know how much their assistance means to you. Remember, a grateful heart is a happy heart, and a happy heart will lead you to further success and fulfillment in your life abroad. A.Be open and respectful. B.Make time for those moments. C.The language barrier can also be a struggle. D.So instead of doing things blindly, just ask! E.Showing your gratitude will take you a long way. As soon as she got on the bus, kids started laughing. Nobody was willing to let her sit beside them. Even Anita, her best friend, acted a bit differently, which made her more upset. Asha was lost in thought. A new thought popped in her mind every second. Once she thought “Great! I have to worry about my pimple as if homework and exams were not enough.” The next minute another thought popped in her mind.“I am tired of using this face wash. I still wonder how I agreed to use that thing!” Then suddenly, Mr. Shetty, the bus driver, said, “Asha, do you want to miss the class?” Asha was so lost in her thought that she did not even notice that everybody had got off the bus except her. She did not want to step into the school campus. She thought, “What will my teachers think? What will my friends think?” After some time, she gathered courage and entered her class, expecting that she would be laughed at. First of all, all children should put your names down at the desk, because you will be divided into several groups. Then, if you’re ready, preschool children will be going out of this front door and their parents should go together. Outside this door, you will see a flag as the marker for your area. There will be some helpers to direct you. If you are in the first to third grade, you’re going right outside that back door to search in the yard. The parents of this group are welcome to go with the children. Finally, the fourth graders, please, follow me down the hall through the double doors and to the other side of the center where you’ll be going to look for your gifts. There’s plenty for everyone. 根据第一段的“If you’re a high school student looking for research opportunities, it doesn’t get much better than the Anson L. Clark Scholars Program. This well-known research program has a selection rate of less than 3% and only 12 high school juniors or seniors are selected every summer to join the program.(如果你是一个正在寻找研究机会的高中生,没有什么比安生·L·克拉克学者计划更好的了。 故选A。 22. 根据About Anson L. Clark Scholars Program标题下的“This program is an intensive 7-week comprehensive research program that will allow you to gain hands-on practical research under the mentorship (导师制) of Texas Tech University faculty.(本课程是一个为期7周的强化综合研究课程,将让您在德克萨斯理工大学教师的指导下获得实践研究)”可知,参与该项目的学生会在导师指导下进行实际的研究工作。故选D。 23. 根据Research Areas标题下的“While the list of research disciplines for Summer 2024 haven’t been released, some of the general areas (based on the Summer 2023 disciplines) you can expect are biology, chemistry, computer science, economics/business, finance/marketing, electrical engineering & computer engineering, history, and physics.(虽然2024年夏季的研究学科列表尚未发布,但可以预期的一般领域(基于2023年夏季的学科)包括生物学、化学、计算机科学、经济/商业、金融/市场营销、电气工程和计算机工程、历史学和物理学)”可知,虽然2024年夏季的具体研究领域尚未公布,但可以根据2023年的学科领域进行参考。故选B。 根据第一段中“Noticing that the door was unlocked, she entered the library, and was surprised that people were using it like on a regular day.( 注意到门没有锁,她走进图书馆,惊讶地发现人们像往常一样使用它。) 根据第一段中“Noticing that the door was unlocked, she entered the library, and was surprised that people were using it like on a regular day.( 注意到门没有锁,她走进图书馆,惊讶地发现人们像往常一样使用它。) 根据最后一段中“This story really attracted Swedes, going viral in the country. They were moved by this community’s respect for the books and equipment of what is a treasured community resource. The Mayor EU has even suggested that this unusual Saturday serves as an experiment of the possibility of operating a totally automated library. 根据第二段“But right now, according to Anastasia Kozyreva, a psychologist at the Max Planck Institute of Human Development, and her colleagues, we live in an “attention economy” in which corporations compete for our attention, emotion and time. They lure (诱惑) us in with stories that stimulate our emotions while providing little useful information, all so they can expose us to revenue-generating advertisements. 根据第五段“Then when you do go into social media, you’d better set time limits. Limiting yourself in this way prevents you from losing track of time as you click on one attractive link after another. It’s also a good idea not to use Internet time as a reward so that you’ll lessen its appeal. 根据划线词下文“They’re designed to attract attention, not provide information. A sensational claim may provide a link with a headline that seems to support it, but a careful reading of the original source shows it doesn’t. 根据文章第一段“In the days before the Internet, critical thinking was the most important skill that informed citizens could have. To think critically, you need to read carefully, consider the credibility of sources, and reason out conclusions on your own. 根据第二段中的“The black-naped pheasant-pigeon was documented by scientists for the first and last time in 1882. Rediscovering the bird required an expedition team to spend a month on Fergusson, an island off eastern Papua New Guinea 根据第三段中的“After a month of searching, seeing those photos of the pheasant-pigeon felt like finding a unicorn (独角兽) (经过一个月的搜寻,看到野鸡鸽子的照片就像找到了一只独角兽)”可知,John C. Mittermeier在第三段的话中表明他对重新发现那只鸟感到兴奋。故选D。 34. 根据倒数第三段中的“A hunter named Augustin Gregory, based in the mountain village Duda Ununa, told the team that he had seen the bird in an area with “steep ridges and valleys”.(一位名叫Augustin Gregory的猎人住在Duda Ununa山村,他告诉团队,他在一个“陡峭的山脊和山谷”地区看到了这只鸟)”以及“Finally, it was this camera that captured footage of the bird walking on the forest floor.(最后,正是这台相机拍摄到了这只鸟在森林地面上行走的画面)”可知,文章中特别提到Augustin Gregory是因为他为团队提供了一条关键线索。故选C。 35. 文章倒数第二段讲到“But first we will work together to identify the population of the bird. 36.上文“Living and studying abroad can be a rewarding and enriching experience.
