Most animals need a way to hide. Some have to hide from bigger animals. Most have to hide from people. But what is the best way for an animal to hide? Some foxes dig (挖) holes. Sea lions can go under the water. Squirrels can hide inside trees. But some animals have an even quicker way to hide. They just stay right where they are!
An animal's colour can help it hide. Some rabbits have fur that changes colour. In winter their fur turns white. When snow falls, the rabbits can't be seen. A white rabbit hides in the best place of all—— right inside its own fur!
Some fish can change their colour when they need to. They can become green or blue or brown. Then they swim deep under the water. If they don't move they can't be seen. Other fish think they are sand(沙) or rocks.
Some bugs(小虫) have the colour of plants. Try to find the orange ladybug sitting on an orange flower. Try to find a green grasshopper in the green grass.
An animal's shape(外形) can help too. The bittern is a bird. Its body is long and thin. The bittern lives in tall grass. The long, thin bird looks just like the grass around it. You can look at the grass all day but never see the bird that is hiding there.

Snakes, hummingbirds and squirrels hibernate in winter because of a long, cold season of little food. Unlike the warm seasons of spring and summer that provide (提供) lots of food for these animals, the winter season only provides a cold, icy ground where there is little food.
What's more, the winter days are short while the hours in the dark night seem too long. Searching for food often leaves these animals hungrier because by the end of their search their bodies end up burning more calories (卡路里) than the animals which get back from the food when and if any is found. So instead of starving or freezing to death(饿死或冻死), these animals decide to hibernate during the winter months.
Hibernation helps these animals survive (存活) in the hard time. By hibernating, an animal saves its calories. Hibernation is a way of lowering an animal's body temperature (降低体温) and slowing down its heartbeat to save energy during times of less food and cold weather.
Every animal hibernates in different ways. While squirrels can wake up every four days to eat and take a trip to the bathroom, black bears can stay inactive, for up to seven months with no food, water, or visits to the bathroom.

The elephant is another animal that lives in groups. An elephant herd (群) usually has from twenty to forty members. The elephants in the herd depend on one another for help in time of trouble.
The leader of the group is usually a wise and strong female (雌性的). She travels at the head of the herd and is followed by the other females and their young. The male elephants follow last. When danger comes, the males form a circle(形成一个圈) around the weaker animals and protect them.
The members of the herd are loyal (忠诚的) to one another. A sick or hurt elephant is not left behind to die. If an elephant is sick, the whole herd stops traveling until he gets well. When an elephant is hurt, two others walk on both sides of him and support him with their bodies. When a member of the herd is in a trap(陷阱), the others try to free hum.
Elephants love the youngsters in the group and give them special care. They help young animals stay afloat (漂浮着) when the her d crosses a river. They work together to help a baby that goes into a dangerous place.
A female elephant that is about to give birth to her young leaves the herd for a short time. However, she takes another female along to act as“aunt”. The aunt helps the mother with her new-born baby. In this way, the whole. herd . protects its newest member.

The undersea world is very beautiful. Now more and more people want to dive(潜水) in deep sea to find the secrets there. Diving can take you into a wonderful undersea world.
You will find many strange animals in the sea. Some are as large as a school bus. Many sea animals give out light in the dark and some have sharp teeth.
In the daytime, there is much light. Here, under the sea, everything is blue and green. When fish swim nearby, you can catch them with your hands. When you have bottles of air on your back, you can stay in deep water for a long time. However, you can't div e too deep. And you must be very careful when you dive in deep water.
The deep sea is not an easy place to live in. It is cold, and it is dark, too. The deeper it is, the less sunlight there is. At about 3,000 feet, there is no light at all. It is dark in the sea. Many fishes have no eyes. Some have big eyes. A few have eyes on one side.
Deep-sea animals have to face a third danger —— other animals.
Like human beings, sea animals also need food! Some of them eat plants. However, some eat meat. This means these sea animals have two big jobs. They need to find animals as food, and they have to try not to become other animals' meal.
