Using the moon, you are able to learn several things about fish at night. During a full moon night, you are most likely to find fish hiding in the shadows. When you find shadows on the water(from trees, etc), you know exactly where you need to cast your line. If the moonlight is not shining down on the water and there are no shadows, the fish will be separated in the water, making your job of finding them much more difficult. On the other side of the coin, it seems like the fish are more likely to hit the bait when the moon is hidden, either by clouds or a quarter moon. So, the real trick is to use the moon to decide how you are going to fish that particular night. If you have a bright, full moon, head for the shadows on the water. If you are on the water and the moon is nowhere in sight, you can go straight to your favorite spot and fish like you normally do, but expect to get more frequent and harder hits on your line. Some fishermen swear they only fish during a full moon, others say no moonlight is best. I say, both are best; you just have to change your style depending on how much moonlight you have that night. Try it out for yourself and see if you get the same results. This tip alone has helped me catch some of the biggest fish in my life. Hopefully it will help you do the same. 24. Where should you cast your line during a full moon night? A. In a place with shadows. B. In a place near shallow water. C. In a place where it is very bright. D. In a place where thick grass grows. 25. On a night without moonlight, the fish usually________. A. gather around the bank B. hide in deep water in groups C. refuse to hit the bait D. stay in different areas in the water 26. If you go fishing on a night without the moon, you _______. A. may get no fish at all B. can choose the usual fishing place C. will catch only small fish D. may have the fishing line broken 27. It seems that when fishing at night, the author________. A. always choose a full moon night B. prefers to stay at a lonely spot C. doesn’t care whether there’s moonlight or not D. likes to change the fishing spot frequently C Back in 1859, an Englishman, Thomas Austin, brought 24 rabbits to Australia’s eastern state of Victoria. Never before had there been any rabbits on the Australian continent. Austin and other homesick English settlers thought rabbits would remind them of the green fields of home. They also felt the creatures would provide them with game to hunt. However, the rabbits spread through Victoria, New South Wales, southern Queensland, and South Australia in no time. Worse, the animals had begun moving west. These little creatures easily went through pastures and crops, and destroyed almost everything in their path. They evicted wallabies (a kind of Australian animal) and other now-endangered animals, moving in and taking over their homes. The rabbits just chose to eat certain grasses and small bushes, which completely changed the local ecosystem. In times of drought, the rabbits dug deep into the ground to find small amounts of water in the roots of plants. As the vegetation(植被) cover was destroyed, erosion(土壤侵蚀) became a serious problem. By 1894 the threat had reached Western Australia’s border. In the end, a decision was made to build a rabbit-proof fence(防兔篱笆) that would cross the continent from north to south. In late 1901, the construction of the Number 1 Rabbit-proof Fence began. The project required 400 camels, 150 horses, 50 donkeys, and 4 teams of oxen. Posts(柱子) made of bushes were driven into the ground every twelve feet. Wire netting that reached out three and a half feet above the ground and one foot into the ground was fixed between the posts. By 1907 the rabbit-proof fence was completed. A second and third fence line had been added when rabbits were found west of the original fence. With the Number 2 and Number 3 fences, Australia was totally divided by 2023 miles of netting. In 1907 the three parts of the rabbit-proof fence made up the longest fence in the world. No one could have imagined the consequences of Thomas Austin’s decision to bring rabbits to Australia in 1859. Who could have known what it would take to contain 24 rabbits? 28. According to the text, Thomas Austin __________. A. was the designer of the rabbit-proof fence B. moved to Australia in the early 19th century C. lived in eastern state of Victoria all his life D. brought rabbits to Australia to avoid loneliness 29. The underlined word “evicted” in paragraph 2 can best be replaced by ________. A. admired B. removed C. controlled D. protected 30. The animals mentioned in paragraph 3 imply that __________. A. many animals could be seen in Australia B. it was hard to find food for these animals C. building the fence was extremely difficult D. the project was a waste of time and effort 31. What would be the best title for the text? A. Australia’s rabbit-roof fences B. How to make a rabbit-proof fence C. Rabbits—the perfect pet for children D. Thomas Austin—a smart rabbit keeper D Recently, a company has come up with software that can grade our papers for teachers. With this new software, students submitting their papers online can get immediate feedback:no more waiting until the professor gets around to grading their work, probably leaving inky fingerprints on the pages. Having a program grade papers would obviously free teachers to do other things, but I think it would be a mistake. As a teacher, I may begin to understand students by their conversation or how they respond in class, but when they actually have to put their thoughts on paper. I can learn a huge amount in a short time. I can see how they think and feel in relation to the material before them, and if they have problems in making connections, organizing arguments, and drawing conclusions. The truth is, students rarely come to college knowing how to write well. This takes a lot of what one of my old professors used to call “correction”. I remember sitting beside him in his office as he went over my papers. He would draw a red pencil through adjectives, suggesting that I find stronger nouns. Don’t say it was a “long narrow street.” Call it an alley if it’s an alley. I learned from him how to make sentences more powerful and how to make arguments more persuasive. Really education lives in sitting side by side with a student, in face-to-face exchange of ideas and feelings. Grading papers often represents the beginning of a good exchange. I think my best teaching moments have occurred off-stage, late at night. I would spot a problem in a student paper and respond at length, in writing, in the margins. This would lead to a meeting in my office, where the student would come back at me to discuss what I’d written. The conversation would continue for a very long time. I don’t think any software program is ever going to replace people in education. It may offer some help, but it’s not the real thing. 32. What are the advantages of the software? a. It saves teachers a lot of time. b. It gives students a quick response. c. It improves teacher-student relationships. d. It helps teachers find out students’ progress. A. ab B. ad C. bc D. cd 33. The author develops Paragraph 3 by ____________. A. giving an example B. offering instructions C. making a comparison D. providing explanations. 34. In the author’s opinion, grading students’ papers ____________. A. is time-consuming and difficult B. has no effect on students’ studies C. affects teachers’ freedom and development D. is beneficial to teacher-student communication 35. The author mainly argues that _____________. A. Software cannot replace real education B. Educational software should be limited C. Students should develop good writing skills D. Professors should improve their academic ability. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2。5分,满分12.5分) English Can Make You Confident It’s true what they say, that English can improve your life.
