Mary Hood, 17, has developed a cane (手杖) which can sense stairs and other possible dangers. And Mary brought her invention to the International Science and Engineering Fair.
“I guess I got the idea from my grandma, ” Mary says. “She’s 84 and her eyesight has been bad. I felt that technology could help her. ” The teen did research. As part of that, she talked over the problem with nurses and doctors. Then she realized that the biggest risk for the elderly was falling. So she wanted to design a cane that could sense when ground changes and then tell the user.
Her new “smart” cane is full of sensors. Some measure distance by sending out tiny pulses (脉冲波) of very high-pitched sound-a frequency that humans cannot hear. That sound bounces off objects ahead and then returns to the sensor. By measuring the time it takes for the sound to return, the cane can work out how far away the coffee table is. If the cane gets too close, its sensors make the cane handle vibrate (震动), warning the walker to watch out.
Holding the cane’s handle can collect information on how fast a user’s heart is beating. If it’s too high or too low, the user maybe at risk of falling. So the cane will vibrate and let its user know that it’s time to find a seat and rest. The cane also comes equipped with lights and a computer. That computer can be programmed to tell users when it’s time to take any medication.
But Mary felt the most important thing was to make her high-tech cane attract the older people who might need it. “That’s why the method is through vibration, ” Mary explains. “I chose that because it can be felt. ” “Those vibrations are also subtle. They don’t attract much notice, ” the teen notes.

When Brantley Harrison and her family rescued a tiny, injured squirrel back, then released her back into the wild, they didn’t expect to ever see her again. Nine years later, however, little Bella, they called the squirrel Bella, still comes to visit them almost every day—as long as snacks are provided, of course.
As a baby, the terrible attack made by an owl (猫头鹰) left Bella near death, she was carefully taken in by the Greenville County, South Carolina family, and raised by them alongside three other squirrels named Larry, Curly, and Moe. Bella stayed with the Harrisons until she had healed successfully thanks to a regular diet of fruit, nuts, and baby food, and was ready to jump on the trees in the forest. The sweet squirrel never goes too far from her adopted home, though, and stops by to say hello whenever she can, despite how much time has passed.
“Bella sits right at the front door waiting for someone to notice she has come by for a visit. If no one notices her, she will jump over to the dining room window to wait for someone to see her, ” Brantley told The Dodo. The little lady just isn’t ready to part with the family that succored her life. Whenever she stops by, she asks for nothing more than a handful of nuts.
What is the most amazing part? A few years after Bella’s original stay at the Harrison house, she found her way back to them with an injured foot—and a belly full of babies—spending another few months of recovering. “It was truly amazing to watch the baby I raised raise her own babies, ” Brantley said. Colin Moore, a 16-year-old football player, may not leap to the top of the headlines, but his story is as inspiring as any sports tale. On the field, Colin plays just as hard as the other players, and you can’t tell the difference because of his arm. However, what sets him apart is his remarkable ability to compete without a complete right arm. Born without the lower part of his right arm, Colin has never let his physical difference stand in the way of his dreams or his love for football. His personal motto, “mind of steel, heart of gold, ” shows his strong determination to move forward no matter what challenges he faces.
The challenges Colin faces are unique, but he uses them to push himself even harder. He has always been committed to working twice as hard as anyone else to ensure his success. During the championship game, Colin’s team found themselves behind by two touchdowns(触地得分) in the second half. The atmosphere was tense, and doubts started to appear. But it was Colin’s strong spirit that helped turn things around. With great determination, he encouraged his teammates, reminding them of their training and how important it was to work together.
Using his quick movements and skills, Colin made impressive plays, weaving through defenders and delivering accurate passes. His leadership inspired the entire team. In a critical moment, he made a bold move that not only scored a touchdown but also energized his teammates. They fought back with renewed strength, ultimately defeating their opponents and winning the championship title. The victory was a result of hard work, determination, and Colin’s strong spirit.
Colin’s coach, Frank Holmes, commends Colin’s perseverance. “Colin was born with challenges, but every day he maintains a positive attitude and focuses fully on his training, ” says Holmes. “His hard work is the evidence to his character. ”

The surprise went off wonderfully, and Cori couldn’t help but thank her students and the people around them that made it all possible. She told GMA, “From raising the quality of the Bug to the art they’re making and the kindness they’re putting into the world, they’re simply the best. ”

Clearly, Carrasco’s actions made an impact on the shelter residents and the administration. “The teens showed respect for these people. ” Scott Arthur, a spokesman for Star of Hope said, “The residents saw this as a proof that people do care. To express their gratitude, they gave Carrasco a standing ovation (鼓掌欢呼) while many lined up to give the teenager a hug and personally thanked her for her thoughtfulness. ”
All in all, Carrasco and her friends served lunch to about 200 people during their pizza party. “It was a magical day, ” Arthur said, “It gives you a hope for the youth of today. They (the high schoolers) were able to think of other people. ”
