Visitors will be able to get close to — and even touch — 100 life-size sculptures of Indian elephants which are beginning a cross-country journey that aims to raise awareness about conservation. The real-life elephants of the sculptures are personally known to The Coexistence Collective — the community of around 200 artists in southern India who made them.
The sculptures can be seen in Newport, Rhode Island through early September. From there they will head to New York City, Miami, the Blackfeet Reservation in Montana and finally Los Angeles.
The organization is planning to sell the elephants off to raise funds for 22 conservation organizations around the country as the tour progresses. Organizers said 30 sculptures had already been sold off, with prices ranging from $8,000 for a baby elephant to $22,000 for an adult. In Newport, the profit will go to Save the Bay, which works to remove foreign grasses from local wetlands in order to restore the habitats for the birds there.
The enormous life-like sculptures are made out of lantana — a tough foreign grass that’s been encroaching upon the elephants’ natural forest habitat, pushing the animals onto tea and coffee farms where their coexistence with humans has become a genuine challenge.
“Lantana has displaced animals across huge areas in India, because it takes over from herbs and bushes that are food for animals,” said Tarsh Thekaekara, a wildlife conservationist specializing in human-elephant relations. “40 to 50% of many Indian parks are taken over by it.”
Tarsh Thekaekara also hopes that visitors will learn more about how important it is for animals and humans to negotiate shared space, as more places become uninhabitable for both owing to direct human destruction and the impacts of human-caused climate change.
24.What can we learn about the exhibition?
A.Its first stop will be in New York City. B.It includes 100 real elephants from India.
C.The sculptures will be sold at the same price D.All the exhibits are based on identified elephants.
25.The underlined phrase “encroaching upon” in paragraph 4 can be understood as ________.
A.restoring B.damaging C.dividing D.restricting
26.What is Tarsh Thekaekara mainly worried about according to paragraph 5?
A.Public parks in India. B.Impacts of climate change.
C.A harmful foreign grass. D.Human-elephant coexistence.
27.Where is the text most probably taken from?
A.A news report. B.A guidebook to an exhibition.
C.An advertisement. D.An introduction to an organization.

Wrapping paper — that thing that makes our holiday gifts look so festive — has a landfill problem. If it’s shiny, metallic, or glitter-encrusted, it’s not recyclable. And even recycled paper isn’t guaranteed to actually get recycled. But there’s an alternative, eco-friendlier option that some are turning to this holiday season: the Japanese art of wrapping packages in cloth, known as furoshiki.
Furoshiki refers to both the square cloth itself and the wrapping technique. The practice dates back hundreds of years, when people started using cloth bundles to carry items to and from public baths. Eventually, it evolved into a wrapping art form. People don’t just wrap presents with the cloth, but an endless number of small items like boxes, fruit, and books. When it was used to wrap gifts, Tsukada Simonian says traditionally, the furoshiki cloth would be returned to the gift giver to be used again and again.
The tradition went out of fashion as paper and plastic substitutes took off in the post World War I period. It’s something “you would see at grandma’s house”, says Tomoko Dyen, who teaches furoshiki wrapping technique in Los Angeles.
But recently, she says, it’s been regaining popularity. As more tourists have learned about it while visiting Japan, Dyen says it’s encouraged the next generation to “learn more about ourselves”.
Furoshiki doesn’t necessarily require specific furoshiki cloth, says van der Steur. She stocks the museum store with imported Japanese furoshiki cloth including patterns with flowers, cats, and otters, but she says any piece of fabric, even old clothes, can work.
Some of the learners showed up specifically hoping to learn furoshiki for holiday wrapping. But some say they walked away hoping to use it for much more. Kristan Delatori attended with the plan to wrap her holiday gifts this way — but now she says she’ ll bring furoshiki with her when she runs quick errands. “Being able to put a couple of these into my bag and always having something when I go to the grocery store or go shopping,” says Delatori. “I’m really excited.”
28.What can we learn about furoshiki from the first two paragraphs?
A.It looks more festive than common wrapping paper.
B.It was sent as a part of the gift to the receivers for use.
C.It refers to the square cloth only used to wrap presents.
D.It was first used to carry items when people took baths.
29.What makes the revival of furoshiki in recent years?
A.The effort of the last generation.
B.The attention from more visitors.
C.The unique charm of furoshiki itself.
D.The support of the local government.
30.Which word best describes Kristan Delatori’s attitude to furoshiki?
A.Skeptical. B.Conservative. C.Favorable. D.Unclear.
31.What is the best title of the text?
A.The Square Cloth: The Very Thing Bearing the Lost Memory
B.Wrapping Paper: A Recyclable Material Regaining Popularity
C.Furoshiki: An Eco-Friendier Choice for Holiday Wrapping
D.Japan: An Asian Nation with Various Traditional Art Forms
D
A few weeks ago, a well-meaning professor tried to explain the physiological process behind viruses and the human body in a tweet and was immediately criticized for a mistake in his information. He then issued an apology and deleted his erroneous tweet.
Communicating science beyond the academic bubble is necessary to augmenting (增加) public understanding of health and environmental issues and helping individuals make well-informed personal decisions.
However, scientists who engage in science communication must acknowledge that even in their area, their expertise is deep but narrow. They need to recognize the constraints in their own knowledge. That is not to suggest that they only write or present on their own research, but rather, that they consult with an expert if the topic is outside of their discipline. Fact-checking with a scientist who works in the specialty will prevent the unintentional spread of misinformation, and the process of doing so may yield tiny pieces of interesting new information that can be incorporated.
Some have argued that the public is not educated enough to understand scientific information, especially for any complex phenomena, but this is absurd. Science instruction can be found at all levels of public education with most secondary schools offering classes on biology, physics, and chemistry. If anything, social media has shown that the public craves knowledge based on a solid scientific foundation. Even the public discourse (话语) that follows most scientific articles shows that online readers can understand even the most puzzling of scientific principles.
It is equally necessary to emphasize that being an expert on a topic does not automatically make a scholar qualified to communicate it to a nonscientific audience. A number of scientists recently have been offering public-aimed explanations of scientific phenomena. Even though they have appropriate credentials, they often do very little in the way of explaining. One biologist shared a complex analogy(类比)involving a library, books, paper, a recipe, ingredients, and a cake to explain the process behind vaccines. Any explanation that requires a written key to keep track of what each item represents is not a clear example for public consumption.
Science communication is a science in and of itself. It requires rigorous training and instruction. A scientist should take communication courses that can teach a person how to identify and eliminate jargon (术语) and how to develop effective analogies to explain complex concepts. One cannot assume communication expertise-imagine if someone just decided that they were a physicist and started trying to contribute to the field without the necessary background. Doing a poor job communicating science to the public will only create confusion and widen the gap between science and society, a gap that scientists are trying to close.
32.What does the author advise scientists do to deal with topics outside of their specialty?
A.Write or present on them from new angles.
B.Utilize information from diverse sources.
C.Turn to a specialist for professional help.
D.Fact-check with colleagues in-their field.
33.What can be learned from Paragraph 4?
A.A solid academic foundation is essential to understanding puzzling scientific principles.
B.Modern technology has facilitated communication between scientists and the public.
C.Scientific articles have gained increasing popularity among the general public.
D.The public’s understanding of science is much better than some have claimed.
34.What does the example of the biologist who shared an intricate analogy show?
A.It is helpful to use illustrations in explaining scientific phenomena.
B.It is imperative to have appropriate titles to explain scientific issues.
C.A learned scholar is not necessarily a qualified science communicator.
D.A nonscientific audience cannot correctly understand principles of science.
35.What does the author suggest scientists do to close the gap between science and society?
A.Develop communication skills.
B.Make appropriate use of scientific terms.
C.Take courses in public speaking.
D.Explain complex concepts scientifically.

Charisma — or rizz (人气) was crowned 2023 word of the year by the publisher of the Oxford English Dictionary. Who could blame us for obsessing over charisma? It can smooth social interactions, win us friends, and score promotions. 36
Approachable and relatable. Many executives and professionals I find confident and chatty admit charisma wasn’t something that came naturally. 37 Dave, a chief executive of Cargill, made a point to remember the details and dates of people’s lives, such as colleagues’ birthdays. He’d pen words of thanks or congratulations.
38 Treating people differently will backfire, says Carla Harris, a Morgan Stanley executive. She chats up the woman cleaning the office, the receptionist at her doctor’s, the guy waiting alongside her for the elevator. “Don’t be confused,” she tells young people. Executive assistants are often the most powerful people in the building, and you never know how someone can help or hurt you.
Accepting your mistakes. It’s not that charming people don’t occasionally mispronounce a word or spill their coffee. 39 They acknowledge the mistake instead of trying to hide it, make a small joke, and move on. Being perfectly polished all the time is not only exhausting, it’s impossible. Appearing flawless can come off as fake.
At its heart, charism a isn’t about some grand performance. 40 It’s about making our conversation partners feel they’ re the charming — or interesting or funny — ones. While skills get you hired, it’s communication and trust that lead up the ladder.
A.Everyone is important.
B.They had to work on it.
C.They easily get attention.
D.It’s also possible to develop.
E.They just have a faster comeback.
F.It’s a feeling we bring out in others.
G.We like people who make few mistakes.

I was born with a physical disability that affected my left hand. Three of my fingers were very small, which made it difficult to grasp things like pencils and books. At my first school, the other kids often teased(嘲笑) me about my hand. Each day, I returned home upset, sharing the hurtful words with my mum. She would comfort and encourage me, but I still felt incredibly alone. I longed for friends, yet I faced isolation.
To help me, my mum decided to meet with my teachers to address the issue. They promised to monitor the situation, but things didn’t improve much. I still felt like an outsider and began to hate school, which transformed into a place filled with anxiety rather than learning and fun. I was eager for a sense of belonging but found it tough to connect with my classmates.
My mum’s friend suggested that I transfer to a smaller school known for its welcoming environment. At first, I was hesitant, fearing that the kids there would be just as unkind as my previous classmates. However, I realized I had to try something different, so I took a leap of faith and enrolled. I decided to hide my left hand in the long sleeves there.
On my first day at the new school, I felt a mix of excitement and fear. As I entered the classroom, a girl whose name was Mia greeted me with a bright smile. “Hi! I’m Mia. Welcome!” Her warmth immediately put me at ease. Although I was still concerned about my left hand, Mia seemed interested in getting to know me.
A week later, a strong bond formed between Mia and me. She made a conscious effort to include me in all sorts of activities, from study groups to after-school clubs. Each time she invited me, I felt anxious about my hand which I tried to hide by always wearing long sleeves, even when the weather was warm. Mia’s acceptance made me feel valued and included. It was in these moments of shared laughter that I realized I had to tell her the truth that weighed heavily on my heart.

W: Really exciting! My husband and I have only done hot pot maybe once or twice at home, but I was never good at it.
M: Don’t worry. I often show foreigners like you what to do with Beijing hot pot. First, the meat. This is really thinly sliced meat. We’ll just grasp one piece between the chopsticks. Like this.
W: Okay, got it. Then what?
M: Put it into the boiling water and wave it back and forward a little. It’s going to cook in about eight seconds. Remember, don’t overcook it.
W: Oh, I see. That’s quick. Is this hot pot style common?
M: Well, it’s unique. Our Beijing hot pot features fresh meat and light soup.
W: Wow. But the pot impresses me most. It’s so special! Oh, the meat is ready. What should I do next?
M: Just put it into the saucer with Majiang.
W: Mm... delicious. Thank you for explaining everything.
M: My pleasure. I’ll have to tidy tables now and don’t hesitate to ask if you have any more questions.

May I have your attention, please? I know it’s the end of the day, and everyone is eager to begin your holiday. But I want to give a short speech about the past year. Since the summer, we all have been focusing our efforts on the goal of creating three new products by Chinese New Year. Now, it’s just before Christmas, and we’ve already achieved this goal. So, as this office’s general manager, I’d like to congratulate you all first.
Second, I’ve communicated with the board members over the last few days, and we have decided that everyone will be going home with a holiday gift. I still remember the extra vacation days we got last year. But by the end of today, everyone will receive a significant holiday bonus. It will be twice as much as last year. We all should be proud of our product development and sales figures. This extra payment is given for your excellent performance. But more than the money, my greatest honor was watching everyone work well together as a team.
So, before we all leave for the day, our sales and marketing director will say a few words. Please, put your hands together for her.

【答案】28.D 29.B 30.C 31.C

根据文章第二段“Furoshiki refers to both the square cloth itself and the wrapping technique. The practice dates back hundreds of years, when people started using cloth bundles to carry items to and from public baths. (furoshiki指的是方形布料本身和包裹技术。这种做法可以追溯到几百年前,当时人们开始用布包携带物品进出公共浴室。)”可知,它最初是人们洗澡时用来携带物品的。故选D。
29.细节理解题。根据文章第四段“But recently, she says, it’s been regaining popularity. As more tourists have learned about it while visiting Japan, Dyen says it’s encouraged the next generation to “learn more about ourselves”. (但最近,她说,它又开始流行起来。随着越来越多的游客在访问日本时了解到它,Dyen说这鼓励了下一代“更多地了解我们自己”。)”可知,近年来,越来越多的游客的关注使得furoshiki得到复兴。故选B。
30.推理判断题。根据文章最后一段““Being able to put a couple of these into my bag and always having something when I go to the grocery store or go shopping,” says Delatori. “I’m really excited.” (我可以在包里放几个这样的东西,当我去杂货店或去购物的时候,我总是有一些东西,德拉托里说。我真的很兴奋。)”可知,Kristan Delatori对furroshiki的态度是赞成的。故选C。
31.主旨大意题。根据文章第一段“But there’s an alternative, eco-friendlier option that some are turning to this holiday season: the Japanese art of wrapping packages in cloth, known as furoshiki. (但在这个假期,有些人选择了另一种更环保的选择:日本的布包装艺术,被称为furoshiki。)”及全文内容可知,本文主要介绍了更环保的布包装艺术。故选C。
【答案】32.C 33.D 34.C 35.A
根据文章第三段“They need to recognize the constraints in their own knowledge. That is not to suggest that they only write or present on their own research, but rather, that they consult with an expert if the topic is outside of their discipline.(他们需要认识到自己知识的局限性。这并不是说他们只能撰写或介绍自己的研究成果,而是说,如果话题超出了他们的学科范围,他们应该咨询相关专家)”可知,作者认为当科学家遇到超出了他们的学科范围的话题时,他们应该咨询相关专家。故选C。
33.推理判断题。根据文章第四段“Some have argued that the public is not educated enough to understand scientific information, especially for any complex phenomena, but this is absurd. Science instruction can be found at all levels of public education with most secondary schools offering classes on biology, physics, and chemistry. If anything, social media has shown that the public craves knowledge based on a solid scientific foundation. Even the public discourse (话语) that follows most scientific articles shows that online readers can understand even the most puzzling of scientific principles.(有人认为,公众受教育程度不够,无法理解科学信息,尤其是复杂的科学现象,但这种观点是荒谬的。各级公共教育中都可以找到科学教学的内容,大多数中学都开设了生物、物理和化学等课程。如果说有什么不同的话,那就是社交媒体表明,公众渴望获得基于坚实科学基础的知识。甚至大多数科学文章后的公众讨论也表明,在线读者能够理解甚至最令人困惑的科学原理)”可推知,公众对科学的理解比一些人声称的要好得多。故选D。
34.推理判断题。根据文章第五段“It is equally necessary to emphasize that being an expert on a topic does not automatically make a scholar qualified to communicate it to a nonscientific audience. A number of scientists recently have been offering public-aimed explanations of scientific phenomena. Even though they have appropriate credentials, they often do very little in the way of explaining. One biologist shared a complex analogy (类比) involving a library, books, paper, a recipe, ingredients, and a cake to explain the process behind vaccines. 35.细节理解题。根据文章最后一段“Science communication is a science in and of itself. It requires rigorous training and instruction. A scientist should take communication courses that can teach a person how to identify and eliminate jargon(术语)and how to develop effective analogies to explain complex concepts.(科学传播本身就是一门科学。它需要严格的培训和指导。科学家应该参加沟通课程,这些课程可以教授如何识别和消除术语,以及如何发展有效的类比来解释复杂的概念)”可知,作者建议科学家为了缩小科学与社会之间的鸿沟应该接受沟通技巧。故选A。
【答案】36.D 37.B 38.A 39.E 40.F
37.根据上文“Many executives and professionals I find confident and chatty admit charisma wasn’t something that came naturally.(我发现,很多自信且健谈的高管和专业人士都承认,魅力并非与生俱来)”和下文“Dave, a chief executive of Cargill, made a point to remember the details and dates of people’s lives, such as colleagues’ birthdays. He’d pen words of thanks or congratulations.(Cargill首席执行官Dave强调要记住人们生活中的细节和日期,比如同事的生日。他会写下感谢或祝贺的话)”可知,上文提到很多高管和专业人士都承认,魅力并非与生俱来,下文以Dave为例讲述了他提升魅力的方法,B项“他们必须努力提升它”符合语境,故选B。
38.空处是段落主题句,根据本段中“Treating people differently will backfire, says Carla Harris, a Morgan Stanley executive. She chats up the woman cleaning the office, the receptionist at her doctor’s, the guy waiting alongside her for the elevator.(Morgan Stanley高管Carla Harris表示,区别对待员工会适得其反。她和打扫办公室的女人聊天,和她医生的接待员聊天,和在她旁边等电梯的男人聊天)”可知,本段是说不要区别对待每个人,A项“每个人都很重要”符合语境,故选A。
39.根据上文“It’s not that charming people don’t occasionally mispronounce a word or spill their coffee.(这并不是说有魅力的人偶尔不会发错音或把咖啡洒了)”和下文“They acknowledge the mistake instead of trying to hide it, make a small joke, and move on.(他们承认错误,而不是试图隐藏它,开个小玩笑,然后继续前进)”可知,有魅力的人并不是不会犯错,他们承认错误,然后继续前进,E项“他们只是返回得更快”承接前文,下文对该项进一步阐述,故选E。
40.根据上文“At its heart, charism a isn’t about some grand performance.(从本质上讲,魅力不是一些盛大的表演)”和下文“It’s about making our conversation partners feel they’ re the charming — or interesting or funny — ones.(这是为了让我们的谈话对象觉得他们是有魅力的,或者是有趣的,或者是有趣的)”可知,上文说魅力不是一些盛大的表演,空处应是接着说魅力是什么,结合下文可知,魅力和感受有关,F项“这是我们带给别人的一种感觉”符合语境,故选F。

注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
One day, as we prepared for a group art project, I found the courage to share my deepest worries with Mia.

One day, as we prepared for a group art project, I found the courage to share my deepest worries with Mia. Trembling, I told her about my disability and how it made me feel different from everyone else and my difficulties in making friends. Much to my surprise, Mia listened without interrupting me. She held my hand gently and said, “You're not alone. We all have things that make us unique. It is your disability that make you different, a unique one. It is your gift not your sufferings.” Listening to her sincere words, I had a brand new insight into myself. From that day on, she encouraged me to be more open about my condition and to embrace who I was.
It was Mia’s encouragement that helped me recognize the need to change my mindset. With her support, I slowly began to show my left hand in public and stopped hiding it under long sleeves. I started participating more actively in class and making new friends. Mia’s acceptance and kindness filled me with gratitude. She taught me that true friendship is about seeing beyond physical differences and accepting others for who they are. This experience transformed my life, helping me find more confidence and happiness.

I started participating more actively in class and making new friends. Mia’s acceptance and kindness filled me with gratitude. She taught me that true friendship is about seeing beyond physical differences and accepting others for who they are. This experience transformed my life, helping me find more confidence and happiness.

(2)书写较差以致影响交际的,酌情扣分;
