Han Kang, the South Korean author best known for her extraordinary novel, “The Vegetarian,” was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature on Thursday - the first writer from her country to receive the award.
Mats Malm, the permanent secretary of the Swedish Academy, which organizes the prize, said at a news conference in Stockholm that Han was receiving the honor “for her intense poetic writing that bravely discusses historical events and exposes the fragility of human life.”
Han, 53, was born in 1970 in Gwangju, South Korea. Her father was also a novelist, but much less successful. The family struggled financially and moved frequently. In a 2016 interview with The Times, Han said her childhood experience “was too much for a little child, but I was all right because I was surrounded by books.”
When Han was 9, her family moved to Seoul just months before the Gwangju uprising (起义), when government army fired on crowds of protesters, killing hundreds.
The event shaped her views on humanity’s capacity for violence, Han said in the 2016 interview. She also recalled seeing images of people who lined up to donate their blood to those who were injured in the uprising.
“It was like two unsolvable riddles imprinted on my mind: How can humans be so violent, and how can humans be so noble?” she said. “When I write novels, I find myself always returning to the theme of what it means to be human.”
Han studied literature at Yonsei University in Korea, and her first published works were poems. Her first novel, “Black Deer,” which came out in 1998, was a mystery about a missing woman. In the 2016 interview, Han said it was around that time that she developed the idea for a short story about a woman who becomes a plant, which she eventually developed into “The Vegetarian.”
24.What are Han’s novels themed at?
A.Political systems. B.Financial struggle. C.Human nature D.Cultural conflicts.
25.What can we learn about Han’s childhood from paragraph 3?
A.Father’s success: inspired her. B.Economic difficulty strengthened her.
C.Frequent move destroyed her. D.The habit of reading comforted her.
26.Why does the author mention the Gwangju uprising?
A.To indicate the importance of history. B.To show its influence on Han’s writing.
C.To reveal the cruelty of politics. D.To stress its impact on Korean people’s life.
27.What is “The Vegetarian” mainly about?
A.A deer. B.A woman. C.A plant. D.A vegetable.

Switching food and drink purchases to very similar but more environmentally friendly alternatives could reduce the greenhouse gas emissions from household groceries by more than a quarter, according to a new Australian study published in Nature Food. Making bigger changes - like swapping a frozen meat lasagna (宽面条) for the vegetarian option - could push the reduction to as much as 71%.
Lead author Dr Allison Gaines said, “Dietary habits need to change significantly if we are to meet global emissions targets, particularly in high-income countries like Australia, the UK, and the US.” But while consumers are increasingly aware of the environmental impact of the food system, they lack reliable information to identify the more environmentally friendly options.
Researchers calculated the projected emissions of annual grocery purchases from 7,000 Australian households. More than 22,000 products were assigned to major, minor and sub-categories of foods to quantify emissions saved by switching both within and between groups. Making switches within the same sub-categories of foods could lead to emission reductions of 26% in Australia, equal to taking over 1.9 million cars off the road. Switches within minor categories of foods could lead to even bigger emission reductions of 71%.
The results of the study show the potential to significantly reduce our environmental impact by switching like-for-like products. “It showed that you can switch to lower emissions products while still enjoying nutritious foods,” Dr Gaines added.
A free app, called ecoSwitch, has been developed currently available in Australia, based on this research. Shoppers can use their device to scan a product bar code and check its “Planetary Health Rating”, a measure of its emissions shown as a score between half a star (high emissions) to five stars (low emissions).
“While ecoSwitch is a much-needed first step in providing environmental transparency (透明度) for grocery shoppers, the vision is for compulsive (强制的) display of a single, standardized sustainability rating system on all supermarket products,” concluded professor Neal, Professor of Clinical Epidemiology at Imperial College London.
28.What is the main finding of the new study?
A.Developing countries are to blame for climate change.
B.Switching to eco-friendly groceries makes a difference.
C.Consumers are well aware of the environmental impact.
D.Meat consumption must be reduced to lower emissions.
29.What do the numbers listed in paragraph 3 emphasize?
A.The impact of switching groceries. B.The total emissions of Australia.
C.The variety of food categories, D.The number of eco-friendly shoppers.
30.What is the purpose of ecoSwitch?
A.To improve food packaging. B.To teach about health benefits.
C.To rate products’ sustainability. D.To promote vegetarian options.
31.Where is this text probably taken from?
A.A science journal. B.A course plan.
C.A travel website. D.A fashion magazine.

Adults who continuously played organized sports through their youth have fewer symptoms of anxiety and depression than those who never played or those who dropped out, a new study finds. “And those who dropped out of sports had poorer mental health than those who never played at all. But many more people drop out of youth sports than play continuously until they are 18.” said Chris Knoester, professor of sociology at The Ohio State University.
“If you play and stick with sports, it’s a positive for your mental health, but if you play and drop out it seems to be negative — and most kids drop out,” Knoester said. The study showed that most people dropped out of sports because they weren’t having fun or felt they weren’t good enough. “That suggests ways youth sports can be improved to help kids,” said study lead author Laura Upenieks.
“Our findings about why kids drop out of organized sports suggest that the current environment is less than ideal for everyone, and that the barriers to participation need to be given greater attention,” Upenieks said.
“It is easy to see why sports can be good for those who are able to continue with it to adulthood,” Upenieks said. “The longer that youth are exposed to a positive and encouraging sporting environment, the more likely they are to develop habits that are conducive to longterm mental well-being, such as a commitment to regular exercise and collaborating with others as part of a team.
The fact that so many kids quit shows that organized sports often don’t provide a positive environment. But there are steps adults can take to improve that environment.
For one, sports should be safe for kids. The researchers said the fact that 8% said they were abused by coaches is particularly alarming. “And the finding that nearly half of kids quit because they weren’t having fun and about a third dropped out because they felt they weren’t good enough should also be a wake-up call,” Knoester said.
“We need to improve youth sports so that it supports positive experiences for everyone and makes it more enjoyable,” he said.
32.What can we say about dropping out of sports?
A.It has no impact on physical health.
B.It’s beneficial to mental health.
C.It keeps players playing into adulthood.
D.It is worse for mental health than never playing.
33.What is one of the main reasons for kids dropping out of sports?
A.They don’t get joy from exercise. B.They prefer individual activities.
C.They are not physically fit enough. D.They are not academically related.
34.What is key to improving the youth sports environment?
A.Reducing the number of coaches. B.Adding fun to youth sports.
C.Changing the rules of sports. D.Providing more training partners.
35.What is a suitable title for the text?
A.The Reason Why Kids Quit Sports
B.The Benefits and Drawbacks of Playing Youth Sports
C.The Impact of Youth Sports on Long-Term Mental Health
D.Challenges and Solutions for Improving Youth Sports Programs

As part of our real lives of Olympians series, The Telegraph has been talking to several former Olympic medalists about how they keep fit now.
· Do little and often.
This doesn’t have to be a workout — short, simple “exercise snacks” will do. Goodhew, for example, brushes his teeth while standing on one leg and does stretching positions in bed. 36 “I turn up the music and hope that nobody is looking through the window because it does look a bit wild.”
· 37
Whether it’s salted crisps or a bag of sweets, Olympians don’t cut out their guilty pleasures. “I think once you start to take things out of your diet, that’s when your body desires it, so you start wanting it more,” says Christie, whose treat is a coffee or tea sweetened with condensed milk (炼乳). 38
· Drink lots of water.
Goodhew drinks two glasses of water before starting his day. 39 While the amount of water you need depends on your body and lifestyle, studies have shown that drinking more water is linked to weight loss and indeed keeps your bones hydrated (含水的) by delivering calcium and other nutrients.
· Give priority to sleep.
40 “During my athletic career, you had to learn to sleep because you go to places where you never know if you’re going to get a good night’s sleep,” recalls Christie.
A.Give in to your desires now and then.
B.Stick to exercise every day to keep fit.
C.Another of his easy exercises is dancing.
D.For Olympians, rest is just as important as exercise.
E.No white sugar or bread, because it’s more processed.

In our classroom, we have something called a job wheel. Our teacher put all the jobs on a small inside circle, and he put everyone's name on a larger outside circle. On the first day of every month, we turn the wheel to see what our jobs will be.
All year, I'd been wishing to be part of the pet-care team, and last month, my wish finally came true! Along with Miguel and Imani, I'd be taking care of our class pet, the lizard(蜥蜴) Larry! We took turns sharing responsibilities: giving him fresh water and food, cleaning his terrarium(育养箱), checking the temperature, and singing him songs. We were taking great care of him.
But one morning when we came in, Larry was nowhere to be seen! We made sure that we had put it in the terrarium and closed its door before leaving the classroom. We were so anxious that we went to the teacher's office to find our teacher. As soon as we told him what happened, he called for everyone's attention and let us take a 10-minute break for Operation Lizard Hunt. Leave no stone or notebook unturned!
The search began. Even with our entire class searching, we did not find Larry. All the students were disappointed and everyone was silent the whole day. I couldn't think about anything else for the rest of the day. What if he gets outside and wanders into the street? Or he gets picked up by people who doesn't know what kind of treats Larry likes? Sometimes when I'm stressed, my mind turns into a worry machine. By the end of the school day, I was panicked so much that I felt like I could barely breathe! Miguel and Imani were also upset and guilty. When we told our teacher how worried we were, he agreed to let our pet-care team stay a few minutes late to do one last search for the day

W: It’s been around for more than 200 years, standing at the entrance to my village. The old tree is so big that it takes two people to hug it properly. When I was a kid heading to school in town, I’d walk past it every day, Back then, I was too worried about staying fed and warm to think much of it, it was just a tree, as ordinary as any rock on the side of the road. Then after years of hard study, waiting for my college letter, I found myself staring at that tree, hoping for good news. Days passed when it felt like, somehow, this tree and I had built up this bond, this friendship. And guess what? The letter came. When I went to the city for college that September, walking past that tree hit me hard. I looked back, and through its branches, I could see my home, my family waving goodbye. Fast forward to when I was 21, I used to work in a village. There were times I just felt the urge to see that tree and my family, so I’d walk those thirty kilometers of mountain roads, And you know what? As I got into writing, that tree found its way into my stories, I am successful. However, when I find myself stuck in my writing, I will go back to see it. It’s fortunate how a tree I once passed without a second thought has become such a big part of my life.

F.Similarly, Dame Kelly Holmes admits that she’s a big chocolate fan.
G.“When you sleep you don’t drink anything for many hours,” he explains.

39.由上文“Goodhew drinks two glasses of water before starting his day. (Goodhew在开始一天的工作前要喝两杯水。)”可知,Goodhew每天开始之前会喝两杯水,本空继续谈论与喝水相关话题。G选项““When you sleep you don’t drink anything for many hours,” he explains. (他解释说:“当你睡觉的时候,你几个小时都不喝任何东西。”。)”解释了Goodhew每天开始之前要喝两杯水的原因,能承接上文,符合题意。故选G。
40.由上文“Give priority to sleep. (优先考虑睡眠)”可知,本段主要讲要给睡眠以优先权,本空谈论与睡眠、休息相关话题。D选项“For Olympians, rest is just as important as exercise.

故填before。

故填the。

When we told our teacher how worried we were, he agreed to let our pet-care team stay a few minutes late to do one last search for the day
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
Suddenly we heard a noise from the ceiling.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
When Larry entered the terrarium, we found the secret to its escape.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Suddenly we heard a noise from the ceiling. It’s hard to believe that with everyone in our whole class searching, not one of us had thought to look up. But there was Larry, peeking out from a vent, just as happy as could be. Luckily, Mr. Jones is on the tall side, so all he had to do was stand on a desk and reach up with his arm, and then Larry could climb right onto his hand! The next thing we knew, our little escape artist was back in his terrarium, safe and sound.
When Larry entered the terrarium, we found the secret to its escape. When we tucked Larry in for the night, we saw that his favorite climbing tree had tipped over just enough to lift the corner of the terrarium lid a bit. Larry escaped from the hole. We repositioned the tree and put heavy books on it. The next morning, Mr. Jones brought in a secure terrarium cover. Our song about Larry still makes me smile when I think about it. So, making up a song or poem can make you focus on other stuff and help you feel better.
