Like a noble guardian, the tree has watched over me and my children for two decades as we play and dream beneath her shade. Called a Penn Oak, the tree is said to have been standing when William Penn first came to Pennsylvania over three hundred years ago. One morning while walking with my husband, I said, “I just can't have one more conversation just about family matters.”“Why don't you go to college and pursue a master's degree?" he suggested. I had always dreamed of receiving higher education. However, for fourteen years, I had been a stay-at-home. I was not comfortable with the idea of going to college as a middle-aged adult. As we walked along, I imagined myself  sitting in a classroom next to students nearly the same age as my oldest daughter. What kind of conversation could we have? I imagined receiving grades from professors who were younger than me. What would they think of me? For that comment, my husband received a five-mile-long earful of reasons why I could not go back to school. Then, one day, I read Shel Silverstein's The Giving Tree. For my children, it was a story about a boy who makes friends with a tree. For me, it was a  description of a life with a less-than-promising future. After the tree has given her apples, branches and trunk to the boy, all she has left to give is a seat on her stump (树墩) to an old man. I realized I did not want to be the Giving Tree; I wanted to be the Penn Oak tree. I wanted to stand tall and strong, to stretch out my branches and invite my children to play and dream beneath my shade. I knew what decision I would have to make. Over the next year, I began a course of study in literature and history from my kitchen table, constantly absorbing new knowledge. Though life was busy, I became hopeful for the future. My efforts finally paid off when I received the thrilling news of my acceptance into a graduate program. Paragraph 1: Back to school, I was both happy and a little nervous. ___________ ___________________ Paragraph 2: This summer, I graduated with honors. 1. As I stepped into the classroom, the sight of much younger classmates made my heart race. But their warm smiles quickly eased my tension. When the professors started teaching, I found myself immersed in the lectures. Their respect for me and my classmates' friendliness made me realize my concerns were unfounded. I was here to learn and grow, just like everyone else. Paragraph 2: This summer, I graduated with honors. Standing on the stage, I saw my family's proud faces. Tears welled up in my eyes as I remembered the journey. I had overcome my fear and achieved my dream. I knew I had become the Penn Oak tree, strong and inspiring, showing my children that it's never too late to reach for the stars. Paragraph 1: Back to school, I was both happy and a little nervous. Entering the campus, I felt like a fish out of water among the young students. But as I attended classes, I found that my life experience brought a unique perspective. The professors and classmates were kind, and I gradually lost my nervousness. I participated actively in discussions, sharing my thoughts bravely, and felt more confident with each passing day. Paragraph 2: This summer, I graduated with honors. At the graduation ceremony, I held my diploma tightly. I thought of the long days and nights of study. I had proven to myself that I could be like the Penn Oak, a symbol of strength and renewal. I hoped my story would inspire others to pursue their dreams, regardless of age or obstacles. Back to school, I was both happy and a little nervous. Entering the campus, the sight of young and energetic students made me wonder if I truly belonged here. Each day posed new challenges as I managed academic pressures and interacted with younger fellow students. In class, I was initially hesitant to speak up, fearing my ideas might seem outdated. However, as discussions unfolded, I realized that my life experiences gave me unique perspectives. I began to contribute more and more, and soon found myself enjoying the intellectual exchanges. The professors were not only knowledgeable but also encouraging, seeing potential in every student regardless of age. I started to adapt well to the new environment, discovering a renewed sense of purpose and confidence.  This summer, I graduated with honors.  As I walked across the stage to receive my diploma, I was on top of the world with an overwhelming sense of accomplishment. In the spotlight, I felt numerous eyes on me, especially those of my family beaming with pride. Afterwards, I returned to the park with my family and visited the Penn Oak tree, my noble guardian. Her massive trunk and spreading branches seemed to offer a silent embrace as I gratefully shared with her my bittersweet journey. In the gentle caress of the soft breeze, I heard her tenderly whispering to my very soul, “You are a living testament that it's never too late to start anew and reach for the stars. Youth is not a time of life, but a state of mind.”
