Lauri, 59, and his son, Johnny, 28, set out to begin the first of three legs of the Ironman competition in Cambridge. They weren’t the typical contestants. Johnny has cerebral palsy. His difficulty walking is caused by muscle weakness. Lauri would act as his arms and legs, literally carrying the weight of his son throughout the race. To qualify as having finished, contestants must complete 140 miles of swimming, bicycling, and running under 17 hours. From the day Johnny was born, Lauri refused to let his son’s disabilities hold him back. Determined to show Johnny that he could pursue his dream of being an athlete when he was 15, Lauri signed him up with Team Triumph, an organization helping kids with disabilities engage in endurance sports. ”It gave me a new perspective on life,“ Johnny says.Johnny started practicing in racing, and Lauri wanted to be a part of it. Lauri began waking up at 4 a.m. so he could run while pushing Johnny in a personally-designed wheelchair called a racing chair. And Johnny tried so hard to walk using his walker for finishing the last minutes of the Ironman competition, so he may step over the finishing line with his father. ”I wanted to fulfill his dreams," Lauri said. The race began with a 2.4-mile swim in the Choptank River. Lauri helped Johnny into a kayak. With one end of a rope tied to his waist and the other end to the kayak, Lauri eased himself into the water. Swimming while dragging another person is tough enough. The pair completed the swim in 90 minutes, and it was on to the next leg: a 112-mile bicycle ride. Paragraph 1: Their specially-made bike has an additional back seat facing backward for Johnny.____________________________________ Paragraph 2: Then they set their sights on the final leg of the race with Johnny sitting in the racing chair.__________________________ 语篇分析 故事梗概 Lauri是一位59岁的父亲,他的28岁儿子Johnny患有脑瘫,行动不便。 Lauri began waking up at 4 a.m. so he could run while pushing Johnny in a personally-designed wheelchair called a racing chair. And Johnny tried so hard to walk using his walker(助行器) for finishing the last minutes of the Ironman Competition. Johnny pushed his own limits and fulfilled his dreams. 1 Paragraph 1: Their specially-made bike had an additional back seat facing backward for Johnny. With determination etched on his face, Lauri mounted the bike, adjusted the straps to secure Johnny, and began the grueling 112-mile journey. The wind whipped against them. The scorching sun bore down. But Lauri pressed on, his legs pumping rhythmically. Despite the burning pain in his muscles, his heart swelled with pride every time he heard Johnny cheer, “You’re doing great, Dad!” The wind whipped past them, the miles seemed endless, and  fatigue crept in, but the sight of spectators cheering loudly, shouting words of encouragement kept their spirits high. After nearly seven hours of relentless cycling, they crossed the second checkpoint, exhaustion etched on Lauri’s face but joy radiating from Johnny’s.【经过近7个小时的不懈地骑行,他们穿过了第二个关卡,Lauri脸上满着疲惫,但Johnny的脸上散发出喜悦。】(共112字) Paragraph 2: Then they set their sights on the final leg of the race with Johnny sitting in the racing chair. With determination shining in Johnny’s eyes and Lauri’s heart swelling with pride, they transitioned to the final leg. Lauri, though utterly exhausted, pushed the racing chair with every ounce of strength he had left, the love for his son driving him forward. Near the finish line, Johnny insisted on walking the final few steps with his walker. Lauri’s eyes brimmed with pride and concern as he steadied his son. When Johnny crossed the finish line, his father at his side, the crowd erupted into a deafening roar. They had done more than complete the race—they had shattered boundaries, defied the odds, and proven that love and determination could conquer any challenge.【他们所做的不仅仅是完成了比赛——他们打破了界限,不顾困难,并证明了爱和决心可以战胜任何挑战】(共111字) 参考范文2 Paragraph 1: Their specially-made bike has an additional back seat facing backward for Johnny. This unique design allowed Lauri to pedal while Johnny was securely fastened to the seat, facing his father. The bike was engineered to accommodate Johnny's physical limitations, ensuring his comfort and safety during the long ride. As they traversed the 112-mile course, Lauri's strength and determination were evident in every pedal stroke. The bond between father and son was palpable, with Johnny's encouragement ringing in Lauri's ears, spurring him on despite the physical strain. The landscape whizzed by as they worked in tandem, a testament to their teamwork and the spirit of overcoming adversity. Paragraph 2: Then they set their sights on the final leg of the race with Johnny sitting in the racing chair. This was the most grueling part, a 26.2-mile run that would test their physical and mental endurance to the limit. Lauri, though exhausted from the swim and bike ride, found renewed energy in the knowledge that they were so close to achieving their goal. The racing chair, designed for speed and maneuverability, allowed Lauri to run with Johnny, his son's weight distributed evenly across the chair's frame. Crowds along the route cheered them on, moved by their story and the incredible display of love and perseverance. As they neared the finish line, the fatigue was evident on Lauri's face, but so was the pride and joy of sharing this moment with Johnny. Together, they crossed the finish line, not just completing a race, but proving that with love and determination.
