B What do you do if you’re the last person who speaks a native language that respects silence? For the last speaker of Chaná in Argentina, it was time to finally speak up. The Chaná language, or Lanték, is a quiet, throaty sort of language that requires far more use of the back of the mouth rather than the front. Mr. Blas Jaime, an Argentine from the province of Entre Rios, was already retired and 71 years of age when he decided to go and seek out someone with whom he could chat in his first language. But years of keeping a low profile and speaking only Spanish hid the fact that there were no other people to chat with in Chaná. Later, Jaime attended a local fair and was invited by the organizers to tell his story. From that moment, he was aware that he could never stop talking, realizing the ancient heritage that his people depended on. He was featured in several documentaries and dozens of newspaper reports. He delivered a talk, he spoke Chaná in a children’s cartoon to raise awareness of the language, he put his words and face on a coffee brand, and he delivered a speech in Lanték on an artist’s Instagram account, which rang out over loudspeakers all over Buenos Aires. But most importantly, he spent years working with a linguist to create a dictionary which now has over 1, 000 Chaná words. His work has attracted the attention of UNESCO, which devotes a large amount of its time, staff, and budget to preserving and celebrating diversity of languages around the globe — thousands of which are at risk of becoming extinct in the near future. “After all, these are completely different grammatical structures and new ways of thinking,” Serena Heckler, a staff member of UNESCO, said. Mr. Jaime, born in 1934, is now referred to as custodian (守护人)of the ancestral memory. 24. What happened when Mr. Jaime wanted to speak Chaná? A. He couldn’t find a proper occasion to use it. B. He was too old to remember the words. C. It was challenging for him to speak fluently. D. Nobody spoke the language with him. 25. What does paragraph 3 mainly focus on? A. The difficulty in Mr. Jaime’s creating a dictionary. B. The effort Mr. Jaime made to promote the language. C. The number of Mr. Jaime’s documentaries. D. The help Mr. Jaime received from experts. 26. Why does the author mention Serena Heckler’s words? A. To attract people’s attention to UNESCO. B. To show risks and urgency many languages face. C. To stress the importance of protecting languages. D. To praise Mr. Jaime’s work on language conservation. 27. Which of the following best describes Mr. Jaime? A. Devoted and determined. B. Brave and patient. C. Thoughtful and wise. D. Hardworking and humorous. C Britain’s public charging network is so expensive that the cost of driving an electric vehicle is up to twice the price of running a petrol or diesel (油) car. The UK has more than 12, 500 rapid or ultra-rapid charging stations — a 40 percent increase on a year ago—but data shared by The Times show they cost an average of 80 pence per kilowatt hour, making the switch to electric, or greener motoring, terribly expensive for motorists who do not have access to cheaper at-home charging. Industry leaders have raised concerns that the cost of public chargers, as well as the falling price of oil, is deferring the transition to greener motoring. The latest figures show that electric car sales have accounted for just 17.2 percent of all new registrations so far this year, down from a high of 18.7 percent in the second half of 2022. At-home charging is cheaper. But the problem is that nearly half of UK households live in flats without driveways. Running cables (电缆)cross sidewalks is not allowed under the Highways Act. Mike Hawes, the chief executive of the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, said, “It is tough out there. Levels of demand are much, much softer.” Besides the cost of rapid charging, the extra cost of buying the cars is also a reason the take-up of electric cars has leveled off. Research published this week by Auto Trader found that the average electric car costs nearly a third more than the comparable petrol or diesel model, but nine in ten buyers say they will not pay more for an electric vehicle. Hugh Bladon, chairman of the Alliance of British Drivers, believes the government will have to give up banning petrol and diesel sales. He said, “This is for several reasons, not the least of which is the impossibility of people being able to charge their cars. In the end, hybrid (混合) will be the answer.” 28. Which factor affects the popularity of electric vehicles most in the UK? A. Charging expense. B. Oil production. C. Government’s policy. D. People’s unwillingness. 29. What does the underlined word “deferring” in paragraph 2 probably mean? A. Defending. B. Delaying. C. Estimating. D. Examining. 30. What is the challenge for at-home charging? A. It is not well accepted by residents. B. It is hard to access for most people. C. It is not allowed under the Highways Act. D. It is expensive to maintain its best condition. 31 What will be a solution for future transportation according to Hugh Bladon? A Motors relying on petrol or diesel. B. Electric cars easier to charge. C. Vehicles using both gas and electricity. D. Public transportation using new energy. D In the midst of the 4th Industrial Revolution, generative AI has emerged as a transformative force. Research librarians now find themselves at the crossroads—leading to this new landscape and guiding researchers towards the right tools. A German librarian noted that they often feel at a loss faced with the rapid AI advancements, unsure which tools to recommend or use. Meanwhile, research librarians lag behind students in AI tool adoption. AI is revolutionizing the librarian’s daily work, making tasks more manageable, recommendations more informed, and literature reviews more efficient. Most librarians are accepting this technological shift willingly, confident that AI will continue to enhance their impact in the academic world. Unsurprisingly, some librarians are using the AI tools everyone is now familiar with in their daily work. A librarian, at Indira Gandhi Institute of Development Research, remarked that his team were “regularly using both ChatGPT and Gemini to aid with desk work as well as the AI tool Consensus to summarize research papers.” He noted that colleagues also use Perplexity to quickly answer questions coming in from researchers as well as Elicit to speed up literature reviews and find papers. “These tools are extremely helpful and speed up daily work to such an extent that other tasks also seem easier.” AI text summarizer tools (both dedicated tools and all-purpose generative AI such as ChatGPT) save librarians time and effort by generating brief summaries of complex information in seconds. These technologies enable rapid access and digestion of essential data, improving efficiency and supporting librarians’ ability to manage and organize vast amounts of academic content effectively. Dozens of new generative AI tools and solutions are popping up all the time across various fields and it’s becoming increasingly difficult for librarians to keep up or keep track. As AI continues to develop, librarians, with their special knowledge in information literacy, should help educational communities integrate these tools responsibly into both professional and personal areas. The rise of AI presents a requirement for librarians to educate students on the use, comment, and modification of AI-generated information. 32. What is most librarians’ attitude towards AI? A. Tolerant. B. Worried. C. Critical. D. Appreciative. 33. Why do some librarians use the AI tools? A. To reduce operating cost in work. B. To learn about the latest technology. C. To make their daily work more efficient. D. To come up with more creative ideas. 34. What are the librarians supposed to do with the rise of AI? A. Keep up with the latest AI technology development. B. Work with educational communities to keep track of AI. C. Improve their ability to manage large amounts of data. D. Teach students how to deal with AI-generated information. 35. What does the text mainly talk about? A. Librarians at work. B. AI in libraries. C. ChatGPT for trial. D. Tools in use. Gratitude (感激) is a useful tool for transforming negative attitudes and developing a more positive outlook on life. In school, whenever a teacher asked me to read aloud, my hands would shake, my voice would tremble, and my mind would go blank. This fear followed me for a long time. I avoided situations where I might have to speak in front of people, even if it meant missing out on opportunities. It seemed like an obstacle (阻碍) I would never overcome. One day, my friend Sarah called me with an exciting invitation. “There’s a storytelling event at the community center next week,” she said enthusiastically. “I signed us up to participate.” My heart sank. The thought of standing on a stage and sharing a story in front of an audience made me break out in a cold sweat. Before I could protest, Sarah continued, “This is your chance to face your fear, once and for all. I knew you can do this.” Her words echoed (回荡) in my mind. Sarah had always been my biggest supporter, and she believed in me even when I didn’t believe in myself. Unwillingly, I agreed. I spent the next few days preparing my story, practicing in front of the mirror, and recording myself to listen for mistakes. I tried various techniques to calm my nerves - deep breathing, positive affirmations (肯定) , and even imagining the audience in their pajamas. Despite my efforts, the fear wouldn’t go away. On the day of the event, as I sat in the audience waiting for my turn, I felt like running away and hiding. I watched as the other participants went up one by one, confidently telling their stories and earning rounds of applause. As my name was called, I thought about backing out. My legs felt like lead, and my mind was screaming at me to run. Then I remembered Sarah’s words, and I knew I couldn’t let fear control me any longer. This was my moment to break free of the chains of my anxiety. I took a deep breath and walked up to the stage. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ A week later, Sarah called me with some news. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 绝密★启用前 试卷类型:A 2024—2025学年第一学期高三年级学情调研测试试卷 英语 考生注意: 1. How much is the shirt? Therefore, as a student, I strongly believe that extending the break time between classes is necessary and beneficial. A longer break time would allow students to socialize and build stronger relationships with their peers. This not only helps them improve their social skills but also creates a more positive and supportive learning environment. Moreover, it can also be good for teachers, which gives them a chance to rest and prepare for their next class. In conclusion, extending the break time is a good measure that benefits both students and teachers. I took a deep breath and walked up to the stage. The spotlight hit me, and for a moment, my fear returned with a rush and made me nervous. But then, I looked out at the audience, imagining them as friends and family, supportive and kind and started my speech. I began my story after overcoming my fear, my voice initially shaky but gradually growing stronger. As I spoke, the words flowed more smoothly, and I could feel the tension melting away. When I finished, the room erupted in applause. It wasn't just polite; it was genuine. For the first time, I felt the power and joy of feeling proud. A week later, Sarah called me with some news. "You won't believe it," she said, her voice bubbling with excitement. "The organizers of the storytelling event loved your performance so much, so they've invited you to be a regular speaker at their future events!" My heart swelled with pride and disbelief. Never in my wildest dreams had I imagined this turn of events. I realized that by facing my fear, I had not only overcome it but also opened up new opportunities for myself. With Sarah's encouragement and my newfound confidence, I eagerly accepted the invitation, knowing that this was just the beginning of my journey as a storyteller.
