The visually impaired Spanish runner Elena Congost approached the finish line in the
women's T12 marathon on the final day of the Paralympics with her guide,Mia Carol.Having
run for three hours,Congost and Carol were ahead of Japan's team.
But just 10 yards away from the finish line,Carol stumbled.Congost helped him;briefly
letting go of the tether-which blind and visually impaired runners use so that their guide'can
keep them on the right track-to stop Carol from falling.
With Carol running steadily again,he and Congost 'crossed the finish line to claim the
bronze medal-or so they thought.Shortly after,organizers.ruled.that Congost was disqualified
from the race because of the rule-the athlete and their accompanying guide-runner.shall retain
the tether attachment from the start of the race until the end of the race.
Congost'told the media,"The tether simply falls while I'm helping him.We could have
crossed the finish line walking.”,·
Congost won gold at the 2016 Olympics, but did not compete in the following years.Taking
bronze in Paris would have capped her remarkable comeback;and after the race,Congost said
that she had been motivated by her children, two of whom were waiting for her at the finish line.
"I told reporters that I was very happy, above all for my children. They are aware of how
difficult it has been for me,"she said."It was also a way of teaching them that when you fight,
work and strive, you end up achieving things."
The Spaniard was with her two children by the time she was told the bronze medal would not
be hers."My eldest, who is six, asked 'Why have you been punished for helping him?'As a
mother,I always try to teach if someone needs help, you have to help them.I had to explain
injustices exist in the world and that sometimes doing things right doesn't mean being rewarded."
Congost believes that,in disqualifying her for helping Carol, judges went against the spirit of the
Paralympic Games."As well as the high-level competition, the most important thing that the
Games transmit is values. Most children who play sports will never make it to an Olympic Games
or win medals, but sport helps them to form themselves as people and transmits values for daily
life,”she said.

London's famed Oxford Street could finally be pedestrianized, according to new plans
announced by city mayor Sadiq Khan, following years of debate about how to revitalize the area.
The mayor's office said that the plans include "turning the road into a traffic-free pedestrianised
avenue,creating a beautiful public space."
Oxford Street used to be prosperous but the world-famous shopping strip has faced
challenges since the pandemic."Oxford Street was once the jewel in the crown of Britain's retail
sector,"said the mayor in the statement."Urgent action is needed to give the nation's most
famous high street a new lease of life."Khan, who is a member of the Labour Party and won a
third term as London mayor in May,has previously attempted to regenerate the area, but his
plans were blocked by Westminster City Council, which is responsible for managing the local
area.Khan's latest scheme is dependent on extra planning powers being granted to him by the
government, which would in turn limit some of Westminster City Council's powers. In a
statement, the council said it had developed its own plans over the last two years to redesign the
area.
"These plans are shovel ready, have had the support of retailers and the local community
and were intended to deliver significant economic growth whilst also securing a successful future
for our thriving neighbourhoods in the West End,"reads the statement.
Nonetheless, the council said it "intends to work constructively with the Mayor and the
Government to ensure the best outcomes for local communities, businesses and London."Khan
said that he wants Oxford Street to"once again become the leading retail destination in the
world"and aims to make"the area substantially greener, cleaner and safer for everyone.""The
proposals.would deliver a much-improved experience for shoppers,residents,workers and
tourists visiting Oxford Street and the surrounding area, returning this part of the capital to its
former glory,"adds the statement.
There are several steps that'must be completed before work can start, including a
consultation period.A spokesperson for the mayor's office told the media that they hope to have a
transition scheme in place within two years.

Scientists in Brazil found microplastics in the brain tissue of dead bodies, according to a
new study published in the journal JAMA Network Open.Mounting research over the last few
years has found microplastics in nearly every organ in the body,as well as in the bloodstream
and in plaque(斑块)that blocks arteries(s动脉).How these pollutants reach the human brain
has been a primary concem for scientists. The latest research looked at a part of the brain called
the olfactory bulb ()which processes information about smell.Humans have two olfactory
bulbs, one above each nasal cavity ()Connecting the olfactory bulb and the nasal cavity
is the olfactory nerve.
"Previous studies in humans and animals have shown that air pollution reaches the brain,
and that particles have been found in the olfactory bulb, which is why we think the olfactory bulb
is probably one of the first points for microplastics to reach the brain,"said lead study author
Dr.Thais Mauad,a professor of the University of Sao Paulo Medical School in Brazil.
Mauad and her team took samples of olfactory bulb tissue from 15 bodies of people who died
between the ages of 33 and 100.Samples from eight of the bodies contained microplastics-tiny
bits of plastic that ranged from 5.5 micrometers to 26.4 micrometers in size.In total, the
researchers found 16 plastic fibers and particles in the tissues. The smallest were slimmer than
the diameter of a human red blood cell, which measures about 8 micrometers.
"The nose is a major point of defense to keep particles and dust out of the lungs,"
Campen, another researcher, said."So seeing some microplastics in the olfactory system,
especially given how they are being found everywhere else in the body,is completely expected.
There is evidence that very small airbome(空气中悬浮的)particles can move to the brain via
the olfactory bulb, but this is not known to be a major route of carrying material to the brain."
Campen notes it's more likely that microplastics enter the brain through the bloodstream rather
than the olfactory bulb. However,it's extremely difficult for particles to enter the brain through
the blood, because the brain is surrounded by a semipermeable membrane(半渗透膜)called
the blood-brain barrier.
32.What is the primary function of the olfactory bulb mentioned in the passage?
A.To digest the details about smell.
B.To proclaim information about smell.
C.To connect the nasal cavity to the brain.
D.To control the movement of the olfactory nerve.
33.What did the bodies containing microplastics account for in Paragraph 3?
A.About 30%.
B.About 50%.
C.About 70%.
D.About 90%.
34.Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the research findings in the
passage?
A.Microplastics were found in all the samples taken from the bodies.
B.The blood-brain barrier allows easy passage of particles into the brain.
C.The olfactory bulb served as a potential entry point for microplastics into the brain.
D.The smallest microplastics found in the samples were larger than a human red blood cell.
35.What's the best title of the article?
A.Brain Tissue and Microplastics
B.Microplastics:Health Invaders
C.Olfactory Bulbs:Microplastics Only Entry
D.Microplastics:How to Enter Human Brains?

The bus drove off without me,and I realized what I should do. I found a big grocery store
nearby. Into the store I went, brimming with happiness and excitement. I realized that the dollars I
had worked so hard for went a long way for groceries. I bought a turkey, ham, oranges and all the
Christmas treats. I spent every dime of my hard-earned money. Although it was not easy for me to
carry those groceries half a mile to our house,I felt as if a weight had been lifted off my shoulder.
Quietly piling the groceries against the door,I could hardly wait to see my mother’s face!
When Mum opened the door, some of the groceries fell inside onto the floor, and she just stood there
astonished. Holding back the tears,I said“Merry Christmas Mother! ”I had a lot of explaining to do
as we unpacked all the food and put it away. That day I got enough hugs and kisses from Mum. To
see my Mother’s prayers answered more than made up for the boots I never got. It was a Merry
Christmas for us after all!

W:Good morning,everyone. In today’s program,we’ll have Daniel Carlin,the founder of World
Clinic. Firstly let’s take a look at a new kind of“Doctors Without Borders”— not the ones
who volunteer to go out into troubled areas, but those who are learning to apply technology to
treating patients continents away. Physicians often get calls late at night or during meals. But
for Dr. Daniel Carlin,he might also get an urgent email at anytime from anywhere around the
world. Carlin is one of the first of a new generation of Internet doctors. Trained as an
emergency room physician,Carlin had served as a physician in needy areas. Years ago he
founded his clinic at Lahey Clinic Medical Center near Boston. Today his clinic provides
medical consultation and treatment to round-the-world sailors and Americans living abroad
through e-mail and satellite phone. But his aim is to reach even larger numbers of people —
through partnerships that link specialists in the United States with doctors and nurses in
developing countries. Now,let’s have Carlin share more about his story.

The bus drove off without me,and I realized what I should do. I found a big grocery store nearby. Into the store I went, brimming with happiness and excitement. I realized that the dollars I had worked so hard for went a long way for groceries. I bought a turkey, ham, oranges and all the Christmas treats. I spent every dime of my hard-earned money. Although it was not easy for me to carry those groceries half a mile to our house,I felt as if a weight had been lifted off my shoulder.
Quietly piling the groceries against the door,I could hardly wait to see my mother’s face! When Mum opened the door, some of the groceries fell inside onto the floor, and she just stood there astonished. Holding back the tears,I said“Merry Christmas Mother! ”I had a lot of explaining to do as we unpacked all the food and put it away. That day I got enough hugs and kisses from Mum. To see my Mother’s prayers answered more than made up for the boots I never got. It was a Merry Christmas for us after all!

W:Good morning, everyone. In today’s program,we’ll have Daniel Carlin, the founder of World Clinic. Firstly let’s take a look at a new kind of“Doctors Without Borders”— not the ones who volunteer to go out into troubled areas, but those who are learning to apply technology to treating patients continents away. Physicians often get calls late at night or during meals. But for Dr. Daniel Carlin,he might also get an urgent email at anytime from anywhere around the world. Carlin is one of the first of a new generation of Internet doctors. Trained as an emergency room physician,Carlin had served as a physician in needy areas. Years ago he founded his clinic at Lahey Clinic Medical Center near Boston. Today his clinic provides medical consultation and treatment to round-the-world sailors and Americans living abroad through e-mail and satellite phone. But his aim is to reach even larger numbers of people — through partnerships that link specialists in the United States with doctors and nurses in developing countries. Now,let’s have Carlin share more about his story.

The visually impaired Spanish runner Elena Congost approached the finish line in the women's T12 marathon on the final day of the Paralympics with her guide, Mia Carol. Having run for three hours, Congost and Carol were ahead of Japan's team.
But just 10 yards away from the finish line, Carol stumbled. Congost helped him, briefly letting go of the tether —— which blind and visually impaired runners use so that their guide can keep them on the right track —— to stop Carol from falling.
With Carol running steadily again, he and Congost crossed the finish line to claim the bronze medal—— or so they thought. Shortly after, organizers ruled that Congost was disqualified from the race because of the rule —— the athlete and their accompanying guide-runner shall retain the tether attachment from the start of the race until the end of the race.
Congost told the media, “The tether simply falls while I'm helping him. We could have crossed the finish line walking.”
Congost won gold at the 2016 Olympics, but did not compete in the following years. Taking bronze in Paris would have capped her remarkable comeback, and after the race, Congost said that she had been motivated by her children, two of whom were waiting for her at the finish line.
“I told reporters that I was very happy, above all for my children. They are aware of how difficult it has been for me,” she said. “It was also a way of teaching them that when you fight, work and strive, you end up achieving things.”
The Spaniard was with her two children by the time she was told the bronze medal would not be hers. “My eldest, who is six, asked ‘Why have you been punished for helping him?’ As a mother, I always try to teach if someone needs help, you have to help them. I had to explain injustices exist in the world and that sometimes doing things right doesn't mean being rewarded.” Congost believes that, in disqualifying her for helping Carol, judges went against the spirit of the Paralympic Games. “As well as the high-level competition, the most important thing that the Games transmit is values. Most children who play sports will never make it to an Olympic Games or win medals, but sport helps them to form themselves as people and transmits values for daily life,” she said.
24. What happened to Elena Congost and Mia Carol just before they were about to finish the race?
A. They were overtaken by the Japanese team.
B. They were disqualified for breaking a rule.
C. They gave mutual support during the race.
D. They decided to walk the rest to the finish line.
25. Elena Congost and Mia Carol were disqualified from the race because .
A. they did not finish the race
B. Congost let go of the tether to help Carol
C. they did not follow the rule about the tether
D. Congost and Carol were against the spirit of the Paralympics
26. What message did Elena want to convey to her children through her actions?
A. Prioritize kindness.
B. Succeed at all costs.
C. Obey rules rigidly..
D. Accept life's unfairness.
27. What are the characteristics of Elena Congost that can be inferred from the text?
A. Generous and selfless. B. Disappointed and critical.
C. Ambitious and self-centered. D. Sympathetic and determined.

London's famed Oxford Street could finally be pedestrianized, according to new plans announced by city mayor Sadiq Khan, following years of debate about how to revitalize the area. The mayor's office said that the plans include “turning the road into a traffic-free pedestrianised avenue, creating a beautiful public space.”
Oxford Street used to be prosperous but the world-famous shopping strip has faced challenges since the pandemic. “Oxford Street was once the jewel in the crown of Britain's retail sector,” said the mayor in the statement. “Urgent action is needed to give the nation's most famous high street a new lease of life.” Khan, who is a member of the Labour Party and won a third term as London mayor in May, has previously attempted to regenerate the area, but his plans were blocked by Westminster City Council, which is responsible for managing the local area. Khan's latest scheme is dependent on extra planning powers being granted to him by the government, which would in turn limit some of Westminster City Council's powers. In a statement, the council said it had developed its own plans over the last two years to redesign the area.
“These plans are shovel ready, have had the support of retailers and the local community and were intended to deliver significant economic growth whilst also securing a successful future for our thriving neighbourhoods in the West End,” reads the statement.
Nonetheless, the council said it “intends to work constructively with the Mayor and the Government to ensure the best outcomes for local communities, businesses and London.” Khan said that he wants Oxford Street to “once again become the leading retail destination in the world” and aims to make “the area substantially greener, cleaner and safer for everyone.” “The proposals would deliver a much-improved experience for shoppers, residents, workers and tourists visiting Oxford Street and the surrounding area, returning this part of the capital to its former glory,” adds the statement.
There are several steps that must be completed before work can start, including a consultation period. A spokesperson for the mayor's office told the media that they hope to have a transition scheme in place within two years.
28. What does the underlined phrase “a new lease of life” mean?
A. A. chance to thrive. B. An opportunity to live.
C. A way to release. D. An attempt to stabilize.
29. What is the current status of Khan's plans to revitalize Oxford Street?
A. The plans are complete.
B. The plans have been fully approved.
C. The plans are awaiting supplementary planning authority.
D. The plans have been rejected by Westminster City Council.
30. What is the type of writing style used in the passage?
A. Academic Paper. B. News Report.
C. Technical Writing. D. Personal Essay.
31. Which word can describe the attitude of Westminster City Council towards this issue?
A. Cautious. B. Supportive. C. Opposed. D. Indifferent.

Scientists in Brazil found microplastics in the brain tissue of dead bodies, according to a new study published in the journal JAMA Network Open. Mounting research over the last few years has found microplastics in nearly every organ in the body, as well as in the bloodstream and in plaque (斑块) that blocks arteries (动脉). How these pollutants reach the human brain has been a primary concern for scientists. The latest research looked at a part of the brain called the olfactory bulb (嗅球), which processes information about smell. Humans have two olfactory bulbs, one above each nasal cavity (鼻腔). Connecting the olfactory bulb and the nasal cavity is the olfactory nerve.
“Previous studies in humans and animals have shown that air pollution reaches the brain, and that particles have been found in the olfactory bulb, which is why we think the olfactory bulb is probably one of the first points for microplastics to reach the brain,” said lead study author Dr. Thais Mauad, a professor of the University of Sao Paulo Medical School in Brazil.
Mauad and her team took samples of olfactory bulb tissue from 15 bodies of people who died between the ages of 33 and 100. Samples from eight of the bodies contained microplastics —— tiny bits of plastic that ranged from 5.5 micrometers to 26.4 micrometers in size. In total, the researchers found 16 plastic fibers and particles in the tissues. The smallest were slimmer than the diameter of a human red blood cell, which measures about 8 micrometers.
“The nose is a major point of defense to keep particles and dust out of the lungs,” Campen, another researcher, said. “So seeing some microplastics in the olfactory system, especially given how they are being found everywhere else in the body, is completely expected. There is evidence that very small airborne (空气中悬浮的) particles can move to the brain via the olfactory bulb, but this is not known to be a major route of carrying material to the brain.” Campen notes it's more likely that microplastics enter the brain through the bloodstream rather than the olfactory bulb. However, it's extremely difficult for particles to enter the brain through the blood, because the brain is surrounded by a semipermeable membrane (半渗透膜) called the blood-brain barrier.
32. What is the primary function of the olfactory bulb mentioned in the passage?
A. To digest the details about smell.
B. To proclaim information about smell.
C. To connect the nasal cavity to the brain.
D. To control the movement of the olfactory nerve.
33. What did the bodies containing microplastics account for in Paragraph 3?
A. About 30%. B. About 50%.
C. About 70%. D. About 90%.
34. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the research findings in the passage?
A. Microplastics were found in all the samples taken from the bodies.
B. The blood-brain barrier allows easy passage of particles into the brain.
C. The olfactory bulb served as a potential entry point for microplastics into the brain.
D. The smallest microplastics found in the samples were larger than a human red blood cell.
35. What's the best title of the article?
A. Brain Tissue and Microplastics
B. Microplastics: Health Invaders
C. Olfactory Bulbs: Microplastics Only Entry
D. Microplastics: How to Enter Human Brains?

What Can We Learn from The Art Of War?
The Art Of War is one of the world's most famous and influential military texts, written by the Chinese Strategist Sun Tzu. 36 Whenever there is a battle within ourselves, or internal/ external conflict in an organization, it provides the necessary guidelines for victory.
Let's take a look at these important life lessons The Art Of War teaches us.
37
One of the first lessons that we learn from The Art Of War is to decide on our battles. It is better to understand when you should engage in a conflict and when it will be wise to avoid any argument at all. This teaching extends beyond the battlefields and applies to our everyday lives.
Always plan and strategize
38 Having a well-defined strategy before you enter any conflict can guide you through it. In fact, it is also important in everyday life to have clear SMART goals to increase your chances of success. So, if you are going to start a business, pursue a project, or face a difficulty in your life, it is always a better idea to approach these everyday problems with a strategy.
Assess your enemy and yourself
Knowing yourself is important but it is also equally important to know your enemy. Undermining your enemy can be the biggest mistake you make. 39 This can help you develop strategies to protect the weakest parts of yourself.
Always be adaptable and flexible
You need to be responsive to your changing circumstances and adapt to them. Seize an opportunity whenever it arises and you can only do it when you are flexible enough to adapt new ideas.
The Art Of War is not only a military treatise but a guide for our everyday life. You can apply these principles to different situations beyond the battlefield. 40
A. Choose your battles cautiously
B. Embrace your decision on the battles
C. It gives definitive advice on the conflict.
D. Planning is the core of The Art Of War.
E. Why is The Art Of War so influential and helpful?
F. Understand your strengths but also recognize your weaknesses and vulnerabilities.
G. This makes it a valuable resource for individuals seeking success in their personal and professional lives.

After the pandemic, it was the tail end of the depression, and things were tough. Mum had a hard time raising us kids on her own in our small community of New Westminster, BC. Five years earlier, my Dad had drowned in Pitt Lake with no pension, benefits, or social assistance.
We relied on the Salvation Army to keep us clothed, and although our clothes were second- hand, we thought they were beautiful.
Looking back, I realize what Mum went through sending us kids to school. Every morning she would tuck a new piece of cardboard in our shoes, because our soles (鞋底) were worn out. When we got home, Mum would have “French Toast” ready for us. This was bread deep-fried in lard. Rent was twenty-five dollars a month, but if Mum couldn't pay it, we knew we would be evicted right after Christmas on the first of January. These were hard and sad years, but we never complained.
Christmas was approaching, and we received a twenty-five-dollar Christmas fund for social services. It was four days before Christmas, and Mum said that instead of buying food, she would use the money to pay back rent, assuring us all of a roof over our heads for a little while longer. She sadly told us then there would be nothing for Christmas.
Unknown to Mum, I had been selling Christmas trees, shoveling snow, and doing odd jobs to earn enough money to buy a new pair of boots which weren't patched, with no cardboard in the soles. I knew exactly which boots I wanted. They were ten-inch Top Genuine Pierre Paris and they had a price of twenty-three dollars.
Well, the big day came on the afternoon of Christmas Eve. I was very excited, as I hurried up the road to catch the bus. It was only half a mile walk, but on the way I noticed a house with Christmas lights and decorations. It was then I realized that at our house, we had nothing for Christmas goodies.
As I continued walking I began to feel lost. I was seventeen years old, and I was feeling a strange sense of guilt. Here I was going to buy a new pair of boots while Mum was home in tears. As I arrived at the bus stop, the driver opened his big bus door…

1.续写字数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
The bus drove off without me, and I realized what I should do.
Quietly piling the groceries against the door, I could hardly wait to see my mother's face!
