Dear David,
Being a common and quiet student in my class, I feel like my teachers and classmates don’t care about me. I have friends, but they always seem closer with other people instead of me. I want to feel like I matter at school. What should I do?
Andy
Dear Andy,
I can understand as I was quite a lonely and shy kid at school. I often felt that my friends didn’t care much about me. It can be a hard thing.
However, as friends come and go, we sometimes make our most important friends later in life. Be yourself and stay confident in who you are. You don’t need to change yourself to try to fit in. But you can try engaging (参加) more activities if you have time. Joining a school club or two might help you meet more friends and make you more outgoing.
As for your teachers, try to be patient with them. I used to be a teacher, and I can tell you, all my students mattered. But sometimes, the louder ones got more attention. If these worries continue, you could try talking with your teachers about it. At times, it’s natural to feel like we don’t matter enough, but as long as you’re working hard and doing things that make you proud of yourself, that’s what counts.
David

Birds are building their nests (巢) with rubbish. The rubbish includes cigarette butts (烟头) and plastic bags.
A group of European scientists looked into about 35,000 studies on birds nests. They found that birds have used man-made things in nests almost on Earth except Antarctic (南极).
Some rubbish seems to be helpful. This is why birds “like” putting it in their nests. For example, cigarette butts have some chemicals so they can keep insects (昆虫) away and protect the chicks (雏鸟). Plastic bags are useful in keeping the animals warm, and other hard things, such as paper cards, can make nests stronger.
However, in the end, human rubbish may only bring harm to birds. The toxic (有毒) chemicals in cigarette hurt the chicks. The chicks may get sick or have shorter lives.
To make matters worse, if the cigarette still burns when the bird brings it back to its home, it may set fire to the nest. Pieces of fishing net may also trap (缠住) birds, and it’s impossible for them to get out by themselves. If the chicks eat other kinds of rubbish by accident, they will also get hurt. Our friends in the air are feeling the bad effects of humans polluting the environment.
43. How can cigarette butts “help” birds?
A. They can make nests stronger. B. They can keep nests warm.
C. They can burn other harmful rubbish. D. They can keep insects away.
44. What did the European scientists find?
A. Birds can help clean the environment.
B. There is almost no bird living in Antarctic.
C. There is rubbish in the nests of many birds.
D. People use man-made things to help birds build their nests.
45. What are the last two paragraphs (段落) mainly about?
A. The activities of birds in their nests.
B. The bad sides of rubbish in bird nests.
C. The reasons for the death of young birds.
D. The pollution humans make in the environment.
46. How should we consider birds nesting with rubbish?
A. It hurts more than it helps.
B. Human activities can help animals.
C. It’s good for birds in the long run.
D. It shows the friendship between birds and humans.
D
A violin was up for auction (拍卖) one day. The violin was very old. It didn’t look like it was even playable. The auctioneer (拍卖师) didn’t feel like it was worth his time. But he still held it up with a smile.
“Who’ll start the bidding for the violin?” he shouted.
“One dollar? One dollar. Then, two! Only two? Two dollars, and who’ll make it three? Three dollars, once; three dollars, twice; going for three…”
“Wait a moment!” A gray-haired man came forward. He said, “May I play a song for you?”
The people in the hall gave him little applause (掌声) as he picked up the violin. But when he started playing, the audience enjoyed the music, for the man played quite beautifully.
Then, he stopped playing. The auctioneer held the violin up again and said, “Who would like to bid on the violin?”
“One thousand dollars! Who’ll make it two? Two thousand! And who’ll make it three? Three thousand, once; three thousand, twice; going and gone,” he said.
Some of the people there felt quite puzzled (困惑的). They weren’t sure what had changed the violin’s price. The person who bid 3,000 dollars for the violin explained—it was the “touch” of a master’s hands.

E
What genetics (基因) did your parents pass on to you? Was it their eye color or their height? It could be their characters or their musical talent. Or maybe it was their anxiety (焦虑) about math.
A US study found that genetics can decide children’s math skills and anxiety over math. It studied over 500 sets of twins and found that genetics has something to do with math anxiety. Over 10 years, the twins did math tests and filled out questions about their math anxiety. They found that fraternal twins (异卵双胞胎) had different skills and anxiety over math. Identical twins (同卵双胞胎) were similar. This shows genes can influence people’s anxiety over math.
Math anxiety has a stronger influence on a child’s abilities. It could bring the same feeling as being hurt in the body.
This anxiety means that students will not want to practice math as much as they could. Then, they become even worse at math. It only adds to their anxiety about it.
But if you are bad at math, don’t just look at your parents. Math anxiety is still rare (少见)—genetic reasons explained about 40 percent. The environment, including school and family, is also a reason. So in life, it’s important to know how to deal with anxiety.
50. Which question did the study try to answer?
A. Why is math a difficult subject?
B. What makes twins different?
C. Can genetics decide on children’s math anxiety?
D. Can parents pass on their character to their children?
51. According to the article, we can learn that ________.
A. genetics is the main reason for math anxiety
B. math anxiety can help students face problems
C. children with better abilities won’t be better at math
D. math anxiety makes students feel worse with math
52. What might the next paragraph of the passage talk about?
A. Reasons for math anxiety. B. How to deal with math anxiety.
C. How to communicate with parents. D. Ways of learning math well.

Dear Luther,
I’m glad you’re interested in Chinese dishes. Let me tell you how to make tomato and egg noodles.
First, wash the tomatoes and cut them into small pieces. You also should clean the vegetables and set them aside. Then, heat some cooking oil in a pan and put the tomatoes into the pan to stir-fry. After that, add some salt. After a minute, you can pour in three or four bowls of hot water. After the water boils, put eggs into the pot and add noodles. You should stir for about 3 minutes. Finally, put the vegetables with more salt. At last, you can cook for another 3 minutes. Then the delicious noodles are ready.
Looking forward to your reply.
Yours,
