“Guangzhou has become so much more modern,” said Julia Onbashi, a 34-year-old from Russia. She returned to Guangzhou after 10 years, thanks to the 14-hour visa-free transit (中转) policy.
From Dec 5 to 7, 2023, Onbashi traveled from Cyprus to the Philippines to spend the winter. She made a stop in Guangzhou. “It was a great opportunity to see a country instead of just sitting in the airport during the stop,” Onbashi said.
After Onbashi and her husband arrived in Guangzhou, they had their first surprise: the Guangzhou subway app. The last time she visited Guangzhou, there was no such app. She had to look at maps to find out her way. “The app was super user-friendly. We had no trouble traveling by subway,” said Onbashi.
While walking on Shangxiajiu Pedestrian Street at night, Onbashi was surprised by how modern the city has become. “It felt like being in the future with all the electronic shop signs and electric cars everywhere,” she said. Years back, few electric cars could be seen on the road.
“I felt completely safe, even though it was late at night,” Onbashi added. She also saw many local girls walking alone, confirming (证实) her thoughts. “It was a wonderful atmesphere (氛围)!” Welcomed by this sense of safety, she spent lots of time trying different kinds of night market food.
Onbashi described her trip as “smooth and easy”. “China is a great place to explore (探索),” she said. She believes that some people are still unsure about traveling to China because they don’t know what the real China looks like. This may be because the foreign media is not showing the full picture.

Does the university (大学) you attend or the major (专业) you choose decide your success in the future? According to a recent survey, 48.6% of the people believe that the university plays an important role in shaping their future. But 33.8% of people think one’s major is more important.
Fu Xi is a student at Peking University, one of the top universities in China. He thinks his university does bring many unseen advantages. “If I had no academic (学术的) training or experiences of clubs in college, I wouldn’t have successfully got my first internship (实习) in a leading bank,” Fu told the reporter from China Youth Daily. As for him, students could improve their abilities through internships or academic activities to make themselves ready for a job or further studies, no matter which major they choose.
However Chen Yufei, 20 years old, who studies Japanese at Tianjin University, doesn’t think so. ______ After getting lower scores than expected in Gaokao, Chen lost the chance to study her favorite major—Chinese. “Having no interest in Japanese, I felt unhappy when taking Japanese classes in the first year,” Chen said. Later, she had problems in finding her dream job. “Different majors will bring about different jobs. They will influence how much money you make,” Chen added. She thinks that even students who major in Japanese at famous universities will most probably make less money than those who major in computer science. “Both the university and one’s major are important, but they don’t necessarily decide your life,” said Chu Zhaohui, a professional researcher of the National Institute of Education Sciences. “For students, personal development is influenced by their performance in the university,” Chu added.
36. What can we know from Paragraph 2?
A. Fu Xi is really thankful to his university.
B. Fu Xi doesn’t enjoy working in a leading bank.
C. Fu Xi can succeed, no matter what university he chooses.
D. Fu Xi dislikes his major, but he tries to improve his abilities.
37. Which of the following is the most suitable for ________.
A. She believes whatever your major is, you must study hard.
B. She believes she should study computer science instead of Japanese.
C. She believes both university and major are the key to one’s success.
D. She believes that a right major is more important than a good university.
38. What does the underlined word “they” in Paragraph 3 probably refer to?
A Different jobs. B. Different interests.
C. Different majors. D. Different universities.
39. Why are Chu Zhaohui’s words mentioned (提到) in the last paragraph?
A. To show what students think about the survey is right.
B. To teach students how to choose a good major and university.
C. To tell students that one’s future depends on his major and university.
D. To advise students to pay more attention to what they do in the university.
40. How does the writer develop the whole passage?
A. By telling stories. B. By sharing opinions.
C. By raising questions. D. By listing numbers.

In addition, there is a single and much larger bell used to change pitch (音高). The bells in each row are different from one another in shape and size.

In the past few years, great changes have taken place around us.
First, narrow roads have changed into wider ones. Rivers used to be dirty, but now they are clearer than before. Second, now we keep in touch with friends and relatives by using QQ instead of the telephone. Third, we used to take a train if we wanted to travel to a city far away. But now planes make it easier and faster for us to travel around.
In a word, these changes make me feel grateful and proud of our progress. And I’m sure that we will have a brighter future.
