Students have a lot of homework. They often go to bed late and wake up early for school. I’d like to invent a machine to help you ________ in the morning without waking you up. It would carefully pick you up, take you to the bathroom and brush your teeth. It would get you dressed and set you down at the dining room table. Then it would gently wake you for breakfast. You’d go to school on time while still getting a good night’s sleep!

I once thought I had superpower in my senior year of high school. I was living with my grandparents at that time. My grandparents had recently been out of work. While they’d managed to save money to buy a house, they didn’t have enough money for living cost.
① So, my grandfather took a job as doorkeeper of the Java school building. Keeping the whole building clean was a stressful job for an old man. Realizing this, I began helping him after school, sweeping rooms and emptying waste baskets, for a small payment.
② When winter arrived, he fired up the school’s furnace (火炉). He quickly realized how difficult it had become for him to shovel (铲) the huge pile of coal to fill in the furnace. I volunteered to take on that job, a promise that required me to get up an hour earlier each morning. I’d go over to the school, and shovel a half ton of coal, enough to keep the fire burning for 24 hours. After finishing that task, I’d return home, change clothes, and eat breakfast. Then I’d rush back to school, always at the last minute.
③ On two mornings, at the very moment I stepped onto the sidewalk (人行道) in front of the school, the first bell rang. That was the signal (信号) for students to go to class. This surprising coincidence caused me to improve my action. I carefully planned each step of my morning activity. I sped myself. Often I’d step onto the school’s sidewalk just as the first bell rang. This effort gave me a huge sense of achievement — and some strange feelings.
④ Twenty years later, at a school get-together, I happened to meet Harold Spiry, the head teacher, who had been in control of ringing the bell by pushing a button (按钮) in his office. I couldn’t stop talking about my superpower. I told Mr Spiry about how I had kept my difficult morning work in good order, how my timing had been perfect. “Oh that,” he said. “Do you remember my office windows? I used to look out through the windows. I often saw you coming. And when you hit the sidewalk, I’d ring the bell.”
36. Why did the writer’s grandfather work as a doorkeeper after he was out of work?
A. Because he needed the job to support the family.
B. Because he was interested in working for extra hours.
C. Because he wanted to stay close to his grandson at school.
D. Because he found he could be well paid by taking on the job.
37. The sentence “It was during those morning rushes to school that I discovered my superpower.” should be put in ________.
A. ① B. ② C. ③ D. ④
38. What does the underlined word “coincidence” mean in Paragraph 4?
A. 巧合 B. 举措 C. 业绩 D. 表现
39. How would the writer feel after hearing what Harold Spiry said?
A. Proud. B. Surprised. C. Relaxed. D. Calm.
40. What message does the writer’s story express?
A. Our dream can be realized through hard work.
B. Personal superpower brings people joy and success.
C. Careful plans lead to the development of special skills.
D. Our achievements are often supported by unseen kindness.

Well, you would probably work the same amount (数量) of time as before, or even more. You doubt about this, don’t you? But in fact, something similar happened in the U.S. in the 20th century — not in factories or offices, but in homes.
③American homes in the early 1900s weren’t much different from those in the 1500s. There was no electricity (电). Most families had no water pipes. Family members had to carry every drop of water in and out of the house.
④Over the following years, many new appliances (家用电器) were made to save people’s time. Modern toilets, fridges and washing machines made their way into more and more homes. However, none of them saved hours of work. In the 1920s, full-time housewives spent 51 hours a week doing housework. In the 1960s, they were working 53 hours.
⑤This may seem surprising, but the reasons are simple. Better technology leads to higher expectations (预期), and higher expectations create more work. For example, before modern technology, most people washed their clothes only twice a year. Bad smell was unavoidable. Washing machines changed that. People began washing their clothes more often. And because it was easier to wash the clothes, people bought more shirts and dresses. As a result, housewives found themselves washing and drying more clothes.
⑥Technology has cut down the time it takes to cook a meal or wash a shirt. But it has also saved time for other housework, especially childcare. Since the 1980s, American parents have nearly doubled the amount of time they spend raising, teaching and driving their kids around town.
⑦Most of us can make our lives easier with modern technology. But instead of enjoying more rest time, we often find ourselves working more towards a better life. Without big changes in society’s expectations, people will take on more work and never feel like enough.

Coldplay, a famous rock band (乐队) in England, cares a lot about the Earth and has done a lot to protect the environment. Take the band’s 2022 world tour as an example. They encouraged their fans to travel to the shows by bus or on foot. At the shows, the band set up special bikes and dance floors. The fans could produce electricity (电能) by riding the bikes or dancing on the floors on their own.
This year, Coldplay is continuing to go green. The band released (发行) its tenth album (专辑),Moon Music, on October 4. The records (唱片) are made from plastic waste.
Coldplay has worked closely with Ocean Cleanup to make these records. The Dutch (荷兰的) group uses large fences (围栏) and special boats to clean up plastic waste in rivers and oceans. It puts the fences in many different rivers. The fences let the water flow through and stop the rubbish at the same time. Coldplay supports Ocean Cleanup’s work. It often donates money to Ocean Cleanup.
What kind of plastic waste makes good records? The group uses PET, a high-quality plastic. The plastic waste has to be very clean. Ocean Cleanup collects plastic waste from the river Rio Las Vacas, because it meets their needs. The plastic waste is separated and mixed. Then, it is tested and used to make the records.
These records have good sound quality. Each record is about 140 grams in weight. One record is made from nine old PET plastic bottles. In fact, when a band makes a new record, it usually produces tons of new plastic. With the help of Ocean Cleanup, Coldplay has greatly cut down on this production!

Hello, everyone! Here comes this month’s School Brain Game. We’re going to talk about what you would like to invent (发明). Let your imagination run wild and post (发布) your ideas below.
—Andrew Student Union President
Students have a lot of homework. They often go to bed late and wake up early for school. I’d like to invent a machine to help you ________ in the morning without waking you up. It would carefully pick you up, take you to the bathroom and brush your teeth. It would get you dressed and set you down at the dining room table. Then it would gently wake you for breakfast. You’d go to school on time while still getting a good night’s sleep!
—Michelle, from Grade 9
I’d invent a time machine that could take us to any day in history. We would finally be able to answer questions like “What killed all the dinosaurs?” Just think how different life would be if every question about history could be answered. We would know almost everything. And we could visit the past or the future to see how humans have changed. Imagine visiting your ancestors (祖先)! Imagine going to the future to tell people about life in the past! Just think about all that fun!
—Troy, from Grade 8
A flying car! You could go anywhere you wanted. It could prevent traffic jams(堵塞) during rush hour. We wouldn’t have to build so many highways. There would be more space to plant trees. The air would be cleaner and fresher. My flying car would be powered by solar energy (太阳能). We could save the Earth and all the plants and animals too.

We should all have at least one fire extinguisher (灭火器) somewhere in our house or office building. However, it’s not enough to simply keep an extinguisher somewhere. The best way to be ready for a fire is to study this guide carefully and go over it often.
{1} Have a clear exit route (路线)
Before operating the fire extinguisher, make sure you have a clear exit route. If you cannot put out the fire, you will need to make a safe exit. Also, make sure everyone else is out.
{2} Call the fire department (消防部门)
Even if the fire seems manageable, you should always have the fire department on the way. Once the firemen arrive, they can double-check to see if the fire has been completely put out.
{3} Stand back
Face the fire and keep your back to the clear exit. You should stay between 1.8 and 2.5 meters away from the fire as you prepare to operate the fire extinguisher.
{4} Operate the extinguisher
It can be difficult to think clearly during a fire. One method to help you remember how to operate an extinguisher is to remember the four steps of “PASS” progress (过程).
●P— Pull.
●A— Aim.
●S— Squeeze.
●S— Sweep.
{5} Keep an eye on things
After the fire seems to be out, continue to watch the fire area to make sure it doesn't start burning again. If the fire does start up again, repeat the “PASS” process.
{6} Get to a safe place
Once the fire is out, or if you are unable to put it out, leave the scene. Find a place out of reach of the fire.
31. By writing this guide, the writer mainly wants to ________.
A. show us how to prevent a fire B. tell us what to do when there is a fire

A. there is a safe exit route B. the fire extinguisher is still useful
C. the fire has been completely put out D. everyone has left the fire scene safely
33. The following pictures show the four steps of the “PASS” process. Which is their correct order?
A. ①②③④ B. ④①③② C. ②③④① D. ④②①③
34. When we are unable to put out the fire, we should ________.
A. try putting out the fire again B. ask family or friends for help
C. leave the fire area at once D. work out our loss in the fire
35. Who may be the most interested in reading the passage?

①Free time is rare in modern life. Just look around you. Aren’t the adults all busy with something? But why is that?
②Imagine yourself as a busy office worker. Now, you have a set of technology (技术). It could make every part of your job easier. What would you do with all that extra time?
41. To support his ideas, the writer mostly discussed American ________ in the 20th century.
A. factory life B. office life C. school life D. home life
42 The underlined word “that” in Paragraph 5 refers to (指) “________”.
A. people seldom washing their clothes B. people buying more shirts and dresses
C. people spending much time washing clothes D. housewives washing all of the family’s clothes
43. How has the time American parents spend on childcare changed since the 1980s?
A. It has dropped. B. It has nearly doubled.
C. It has slightly risen. D. It has stayed about the same.
44. Which of the following shows the structure of this passage?
A. ①/②/③④⑤⑥/⑦ B. ①/②③④⑤/⑥/⑦
C. ①②③④/⑤⑥/⑦ D. ①②③/④⑤⑥/⑦
45. What’s the best title of this article?
A. More technology, less work! B. More technology, less work?
C. The technology behind less work D. The technology behind more work
