In Hawaii, learning Hawaiian words isn't just about relaxing into the island atmosphere(
)it's also about understanding the spirit of this place. There's a word that visitors to the
islands hear more these days:malama.
As part of the Malama Hawaii project, tourism officials, hotels and attractions have teamed up
to offer one-off volunteer experiences sized for vacationers.They're easy,fun and short,making a
difference in local communities.Especially for repeat visitors and vacationers who feel a deep
connection to Hawaii's culture and beaches, the idea of giving back makes a lot of sense.
There are more and more chances to do a bit of volunteering while on vacation.Beach
cleanups, reforestation and cultural preservation()programs are just a few of the volunteer
activities that benefit the island and its people while turning tourism into a force that gives rather
than just takes.
My family's first experience of malama volunteering was a beach cleanup at beautiful Hapuna
Beach. As we made a game of collecting bits of plastic and trash,we realized how often we must
have enjoyed clean beaches thanks to the efforts of other volunteers doing just what we were doing
英语试题第3页(共8页)
then.It was an easy task that allowed us to really look at our surroundings and notice the plants that
grew out of the sand and little fish swimming among the rocks.
As part of planning our next vacation,I looked for another malama volunteer experience.I saw
it:the field trips for rescue()dogs program. This was clearly the perfect way to get my 8-
year-old excited about volunteering:For her, spending a special day with a rescue dog out of the

Most Americans eat ultraprocessed(超加工的)foods every day. These are foods that contain
flavors and chemicals that change the taste or feel of the food. They make up about 60 percent of
the American diet. For children,it is even higher, about two-thirds of what they eat.
Scientists have connected eating ultraprocessed foods to poor health results.Nutrition()
science is not simple, though, and most research so far has found connections-not proof()
regarding the health effects of these foods.
Food producers argue that processing increases food safety and food supplies. They say it also
offers a low-cost,easy way to provide a nutritious diet.
Kevin Hall is a researcher who studies diets at the National Institutes of Health. He said that
some processing is still healthy.Whole-grain bread and yogurt are highly processed, for example.
But they are also nutritious.
Still, many studies suggest that diets high in ultraprocessed foods are tied to poor health
results.Hall and his partners carried out a small study with 20 people who came to live at a health
center for a month. Some of the people ate ultraprocessed foods, while others ate unprocessed
foods. The two groups got the same amount()of calories, sugar, fat, fiber and nutrients for
two weeks. They could eat as much as they liked. When people ate the diet of ultraprocessed
foods, they all put on about I kilogram during the study period.People who ate only unprocessed
foods for the same amount of time lost about 1 kilogram.
"You just can't stop eating them,"Hall said.He believes the government has enough reasons
for changing policies. This could mean raising taxes()on sugary drinks, controlling salt in
these foods and controlling how advertisers sell the foods to children. Some experts also said that
buyers should pay more attention to ultraprocessed foods since we can't stop eating them.
28.Which of the following about ultraprocessed foods may Kevin Hall agree with?
A.They are not all unhealthy.
B.They should not be produced.
C.They are more harmful to children.
D.They are less nutritious than unprocessed foods.
英语试题第4页(共8页)
29.What can we know about the study carried out by Kevin Hall?
A.There were 20 people who ate ultraprocessed foods.
B.There was no difference in weight change between the two groups
C.The two groups got the same amount of nutrients during the experiment.
D.The two groups were asked to eat a certain amount of ultraprocessed foods.
30.What will the text say next?
A.The reason why people enjoy eating ultraprocessed foods more.
B.How the government should control the ultraprocessed foods.
C.Why the government should control salt in ultraprocessed foods
D.The methods buyers can take to do with ultraprocessed foods.
31.Where can we probably see this text?
A.In a'biology textbook.
B.In a science magazine.
C.In a diary.
D.In an education guidebook

There are many amazing waterfalls all over the world. But none is as special as Blood Falls in
Antarctica. The waterfall, which comes out from the top of the Taylor Glacier, has bright red
water.People have known about this five-story-high waterfall for more than a century. But the
reason for its red water was unknown. Now,a team led by W.Berry Lyons from The Ohio State
University might have found the answer.
Australian geologist Griffith Taylor's expedition (discovered Blood Falls in 1911.
They were in high spirits. The researchers thought its color was because of red algae().
However, after they thought for a second time, their further studies didn't support this idea.Later
studies thought that the blood-red color was most likely from the iron atoms()in the ice lake
that feeds the waterfall.
When Lyons and his team checked the water, they found only a few iron atoms. What they did
find, though, were iron-rich nanospheres(纳米s球),which are 100 times smaller than human red
blood cells. They are changed, giving the water flowing to the Blood Falls its red color.
"As soon as I looked at the pictures from the microscope,I noticed there were these little iron-
rich nanospheres, and that they have lots of different things in them,"said study co-author Ken
Livi."In order to be a mineral, atoms must be organized in a very specific, crystalline structure
(晶体结构),These nanospheres aren't crystalline and the methods used before to examine the
solid(固体)did not find them.”
The researchers believe their discovery may have effects beyond Earth. The ice lake that feeds
Blood Falls is salty, with no light or oxygen, similar to conditions on Mars.Yet,it has managed to
protect the area for millions of years. This suggests there could also be life on Mars and other
planets. However,we have yet to send the right tool to prove this.
32.How might Griffith Taylor's expedition feel when they saw Blood Falls?
A.Amazed.
B.Stressed.
C.Fearful.
D.Confident.
33.Which of the following results in the red color of Blood Falls?
A.Iron atoms.
B.Many animals in it.
C.Lots of red algae.
D.Iron-rich nanospheres
34.Why were nanospheres in Blood Falls undiscovered before?
A.There were many things in the nanospheres.
B.The way used before was not proper.
C.The pictures taken were not clear enough.
D.The nanospheres are shaped in a crystalline structure

My husband,my sister,and I were on a job at a new customer's house.We were fixing
expensive flooring throughout some of the main living areas of his home, which included installing
(安装)some on the first floor and some downstairs in the basement..
The owner let us know that he was leaving for work and that a cat was hiding somewhere in the
house. He told us not to let it out, because he had lost two cats already.
After about an hour,my sister Candice went outside to get more boxes of flooring. When she
came back,I opened the door to let her in since she had her hands full.As she walked through the
door, out ran the owner's cat that wasn't supposed to be let outside. So we all stopped what we
were doing and tried to round up this fast cat.Unfortunately,we couldn't catch up with it.
After calling for the missing cat and pacing the long driveway madly for twenty minutes without
noticing it,we decided there was nothing more we could do.We went back to work on the floor,
hoping the cat would come back finally. We hoped that the owner would never even know it was
gone! And,sure enough, after thirty minutes, the cat scratched()at the back door to be let in.
We put it in the basement, where it couldn't get away again.
Then I heard another scratch at the back door.I looked outside, and it seemed like the exact
same cat, which puzzled()me.I was almost certain that cat couldn't have gotten out
again. But,against my better judgment,I figured that maybe someone had accidentally let it out.
And since both my husband and sister were now downstairs working on the basement floor,I
couldn't ask them.I decided to let the cat in through the kitchen door,so it could go back
downstairs.
After about thirty more minutes,I went downstairs to work on the basement floor as my sister
and husband came up to work on the first floor.
注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
