(23-24九年级上·新疆伊犁·期末)Though chopsticks are used in many Asian countries today, Chinese are the first to use chopsticks in the world. Chinese history says that the Chinese had chopsticks as far back as the Xia Dynasty. Gold and silver chopsticks followed later. The most expensive ones are made of ivory or hard green stones. Chopsticks tell us something about Chinese tradition in their own way. In ancient times some people used hard green stones or gold chopsticks to show they are rich. In history many kings used silver chopsticks to eat their food to see if it was poisonous (有毒的). It was said that if the food was poisonous, the silver chopsticks would change its color. It’s traditional to give chopsticks to a daughter when she marries. They carry the wish that she will have a baby very soon, for “chopsticks” has the similar pronunciation to “quick a son” in Chinese.
An old Chinese story also mentions chopsticks. An old man teaches his sons a lesson by showing how he can easily break a single chopstick by hand but not a number of them.
In China, chopsticks and good luck are connected. So on the Chinese New Year’s Eve, many families will lay out new chopsticks as a way of asking for good luck.

People often ask me for suggestions about how to learn English. As for it, everyone is different, but everyone has the ability to learn. I’ll share some of my experiences. I once took an English course at a university, but I mostly learned English by myself.
One thing I can tell you is that, once you’ve started learning, you should try to think in English as much as you can. Use it or lose it, try to use more English to express yourself. If you see something when you’re riding your bike or walking down the street, just think about “How would I say them in English?” At first, it might be with simple words or phrases, but later you should think about longer phrases and sentences. You can keep practicing what you have learned. Now I’m in America, and most of the time, I would think in English and speak it directly. It’s amazing how much this helps. I really improved my speaking and listening.
When I started learning, I was often afraid of talking with others in English because I didn’t want to make mistakes. Learning from mistakes is a kind of courage. While traveling in America, I’d try to hang out with friends who couldn’t speak Chinese, so that I’d have no choice but to speak English. I didn’t pay more attention to the people who laughed at me. After that, my English started improving much more quickly.
Besides, it may be a good idea to ask your American friends to look at the way you’re writing and give you some suggestions for improvement.
People often ask me for 16 about how to learn English. Everyone has the 17 to learn. I’ll share some of my experience, but I mostly learned English on my own.
Once you’ve started 18 , you should try to think in English as much as you can to express yourself. Sad but Beautiful
Last night one of my Chinese friends took me to a concert of Chinese folk music. The piece which was played on the erhu especially moved me. The music was strangely beautiful, but under the beauty I sensed a strong sadness and pain. The piece had a simple name, Erquan Yingyue (Moon Reflected on Second Spring), but it was one of the most moving pieces of music that I’ve ever heard. The erhu sounded so sad that I almost cried along with it as I listened. Later I looked up the history of Erquan Yingyue, and I began to understand the sadness in the music.
The music was written by Abing, a folk musician who was born in the city of Wuxi in 1893. Abing’s amazing musical skills made him very popular during his lifetime. By the end of his life, he could play over 600 pieces of music. Many of these were written by Abing himself. It is a pity that only six pieces of music in total were recorded for the future world to hear, but his popularity continues to this day. Today, Abing’s Erquan Yingyue is a piece which all the great erhu masters play and praise. It has become one of China’s national treasures. Its sad beauty not only paints a picture of Abing’s own life but also makes people recall their deepest wounds from their own sad or painful experiences.
Abing played music that could touch the hearts of people. When we listen to his music, we can sense both the 34 and pain in it. Abing’s 35 musical skills made him very 36 during his lifetime.
