Passage A (湖南省湖湘C13教育联盟2023-2024学年九年级上学期期末)
As a young man, Alan was a skilled artist and known for his paintings. He had a wife and two sons. But one night, his older son died of a sudden illness. To make matters worse, his wife left him a short time later, leaving him alone with his 6-year-old son. The pain was more than Alan could stand, and he turned to alcohol (酒). Finally, Alan became an alcoholic (酒鬼).
Day by day, Alan began to lose everything he had - his home, his job, his art, everything. In the end, Alan died alone in a hotel.

We are all taught at a young age that we should stop in front of a red light. We must wait until it turns green. But what if there is no one—not even a police officer—around? What if we are very sure that running the light won’t cause any danger? Will you break the traffic rule?
It was a night seven years ago. I was driving to meet an old friend. I was already late for the meeting, so I was driving fast. At one point along an open road, I came to a crossroads (十字路口) with a traffic light. As I drove near, it turned red and I stopped my car. I was alone on the road. I looked left, right and behind me. Nothing. But there I sat, waiting for the light to change.

Both my wife and I were out of work. However, I said, “Sure”, giving them a quarter each. They went away, leaving only fifty cents left in my pocket.

You must have read or heard of the sad love story between Jia Baoyu and Lin Daiyu. But can you imagine Jia and Lin singing operas in English instead of speaking poetic (有诗意的) Chinese?
Jia and Lin are two characters from the classic Chinese novel A Dream of Red Mansions (《红楼梦》), written by Cao Xueqin (1715—1763). Now the book has been made into an English-language opera. After being performed in San Francisco, US, the performance came to Beijing, Changsha and Wuhan in 2017.
Many of the opera’s creators have backgrounds in both Chinese and American cultures, including the director and playwrights (剧作家). Their understanding of both cultures helped them change a Chinese classic into a foreign-language opera.
