Bobby was really good at math. He didn't just like math in school; he used it in everyday life, like helping his mom measure ingredients (烹饪材料) and working out how far his dad drove in the car.
When he moved up to junior high, he was in the honors math class with Mr. Max as his teacher. His older brother, Tyler, had hinted(暗示) that Mr. Max was very interesting. However, when Bobby met Mr. Max, he didn’t seem special at all.
But things got interesting in the second lesson. Mr. Max talked about his childhood, family, town, and favorite foods. None of them seemed related to math. Then he announced they'd have a quiz (小测验) the next day about what they'd learned.
Bobby and his classmates felt nervous about it. The next day, Mr. Max gave them the quiz papers with five questions. The first question was about his favorite food, apples, and read: If I ate 57 apples when I was sixteen and know the total amount of apples I ate when I was sixteen and seventeen is 134, how many apples did I eat when I was seventeen? The other questions were about the number of relatives he had, places he had been to, and sports games he attended. Bobby did his best, but worried about his scores.
On Thursday, Mr. Max returned their test papers with no grades written on them. He began to go over all the questions. Suddenly, it became clear to Bobby what Mr. Max was up to. Mr. Max wrote algebraic equations(代数方程) on the blackboard, just like those they had learned on Monday. Question number one turned into“x+57=134”, and so on and so forth.
After he finished going over all the answers, Mr. Max said,“Now we'll have a quick quiz. But this one actually counts. So get serious.”
The whole class was nervous. The question was: What have you learned today? Bobby thought for a while, remembering all the times he used math while cooking with his mom and driving with his dad, or when he went swimming and played basketball. Then, he wrote: Math is everywhere.
The next week, Mr. Max told Bobby that he got a perfect score of100%._____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
As the weeks passed, Bobby grew to enjoy Mr. Max's class even more._______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
1. Bobby
2. Mr. Max
Bobby was excited to see the perfect score. From that moment on, he paid even more attention in Mr. Max's class. Every lesson was like a new adventure. Mr. Max continued to bring in real - life examples, from calculating the best deals at the grocery store to figuring out the angles needed to build a model treehouse.
Bobby started to see math not just as a subject in school, but as a powerful tool that could unlock the mysteries of the world around him. He shared his new - found enthusiasm with his friends, and soon, more and more students in the class were looking forward to math lessons. They would discuss how to apply math in different situations during breaks, and Mr. Max's class became the most popular one in junior high. Bobby even started a math club with his classmates, using Mr. Max's teaching methods to explore more fun math problems related to daily life.
