Popular TV drama The Longest Day in Chang’an, which was shot in the ancient
Chinese city of Xi’an in Shaanxi province, has made the city a tourist hot spot. Thousands
of tourists have been flooding into this city to experience the magnificence and glory of
its scenic spots that have been portrayed in a fascinating manner in the TV series.
“In the first week of this month, online enquiries about flight ticket bookings to
Xi’an recorded a 130-percent year-on-year peak,” said Ctrip, China’s largest online travel
agency. “Xi’an had been a hot tourist destination long before the TV drama became
popular. The series portray the prosperity of the Tang Dynasty of Xi’an. This had made
the city even more popular. The media exposure makes those sites attractive choices for
vacations,” said a senior director at Ctrip.
It’s not just Xi’an that is gaining the benefits of exposure via mass media contents.
Suzhou, Chongqing and Bayanbulak Grassland have also become go-to destinations for
domestic tourists as films such as Pegasus and TV dramas such as All Is Well were set or
shot there.
This trend of Chinese tourists flooding into places featured in entertainment is
extending to even destinations abroad. Southeastern European country Croatia has
benefited from the popular Game of Thrones series. In fact, the “Game of Thrones effect”
on Croatian tourism and the nation’s economy has been significant, following the
screening of the drama over the past eight years. Thailand, Japan, the United Kingdom,
the Czech Republic and Iceland have shone as tourist destinations among Chinese
travelers, especially the younger lot, thanks to films and TV dramas that were shot there,
Ctrip found.
Those born in the 1980s account for 32 percent of Chinese travelers. Those born in
the 1990s and 2000s make up 27 percent and 13 percent, respectively, according to Ctrip.
“They are the main viewers of some popular show. They pay attention to the beautiful

such shows, their fans would like to go on trips to those places. Some even travel while
shoots at such places are on.”

On Wednesday a powerful earthquake hit Amatrice that was at the epicenter(震中),
which is the point in the earth’s surface directly above where the earthquake happens. The
town’s clock tower was the only building still standing. Italy’s prime minister said the
earthquake had killed at least 120 people, and warned that the number might increase.
There were several villages that were affected in farther mountainous areas. The
earthquake was also felt as far away as Rome, 100 miles from the epicenter.
Earthquakes can’t be predicted. There are warning systems that can save some lives,
but only under certain conditions. Unlike a tomnado warning where radar can see it and
issue a warning before it, an earthquake warning happens when the earth is already
shaking. We don’t have a system that can predict when the earth is going to shake. Our
warning system is based on the fact that the earth is already shaking. The warning
depends on how far you are from the earthquake epicenter. If you’re at an earthquake
epicenter, you’re going to get no warning. If you’re far away from the epicenter, we can
give you some time to prepare.
Another condition is how close the sensor is to the epicenter. If the sensor is 10
miles away from the epicenter, it takes five seconds to get to that sensor. So, the more
sensors we get, the more time we’ll get as well. If you get 10 seconds notice of an
earthquake that’s happening, especially a big one, you can open up the lifts on the nearest
floor. You can also stop all the things that are moving before the shaking gets there. If
you’re 30 miles away, your warning could be 15 seconds. It is 15 seconds that can save
your life.
28.What can be learned from the first paragraph?
A.The earthquake happened on Monday.
B.The earthquake destroyed all the buildings.
C.Fewer than 120 people lost their lives.
D.Rome is about 100 miles away from Amatrice.
29.What can we say about the earthquake warning?
A.It can always give us time to prepare.
B.It is different from the tornado warning.
C.It can tell us how to prepare for the earthquake.
D.It can predict when earthquakes will happen.
试卷第 5页,共 8页
30.How far might you be from the epicenter with 10 seconds notice of an earthquake?
A.5 miles. B.10 miles. C.20 miles. D.30 miles.
31.What is the best title of the passage?
A.A Powerful Earthquake B.The Introduction of the Earthquake
Warning
C.Earthquakes and Tornados D.How the Earthquake Happens

Recently, 14-year-old Harini Logan won the Scripps National Spelling Bee in the
United States. She correctly spelled 22 words during 90 seconds. Most Americans,
however, would find it difficult to spell any of these words!
From an early age, native English speakers know there are clear differences
between how words are pronounced and how they are spelled. But they do not know that
the difference is unique to English among major languages. Languages like Italian or
Finnish can be spelled more easily because each letter matches to one sound. Students
studying these languages can have 90 percent reading accuracy(正确率 ) after the first
year.
In English, many letters have two or more sounds. This is why even after years of
learning, students of English are still far below Italian or Finnish students in reading
accuracy.
English started as a Germanic language. It is most closely connected to German and
Dutch, especially in grammar and basic vocabulary. During the Norman attack in the 12th
century, Old English was spoken but French was used in government and legal
documents. As a result, more French and Latin words entered the English language.
The printing machine was invented in the late 1400s. This helped to establish
English spelling and strengthen the connection between how English is spoken and how it
is written. The English of today is how the language was written at the time.
However, the spoken language started to change in the 1500s with the
pronunciation of all long vowels(元音), especially in southern England. For example, the
word “bite” was pronounced closer to “beet” in 1400, before changing through the years
to its present sound. The effect was that the English language had old spellings, but new
sounds.
English has 26 letters, but over 44 different sounds depending on the difference of
spoken English. There are several sounds from only one letter. For example, the letter
“C” can sound like an “S” as in “city.” And it also sounds like a “K” as in “cat.”
32.What is the advantage of Italian compared with English?
A.It has simpler sentences. B.It expresses more exactly.
C.It is easier to pronounce. D.It’s made up of fewer letters.
33.How did the printing machine affect the English language?
A.It established today’s English. B.It made written English simple.
C.It changed the spoken language. D.It separated spellings from sounds.
34.What did the spoken language change in the 1500s result in?
A.Spellings matched sounds. B.English was easier to learn.
C.Old spellings were changed. D.New sounds were formed.
35.Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A.What Is the Best Way to Master English
B.Why Spelling in English Is so Difficult
试卷第 6页,共 8页
C.How English Developed into Modern One
D.When Letters Started to Have Over One Sound

Stress is a normal part of life and usually comes from everyday occurrences. 36
♦ Try physical activity
When you are nervous, angry or upset, try releasing the pressure through exercise
or physical activity. 37
♦ 38
You should make every effort to eat well and get enough rest. If you easily get
angry and can’t sleep well enough, or if you’re not eating properly, it will be more likely
that you will fall into stressful situations. If stress repeatedly keeps you from sleeping,
you should consult a doctor.
♦ Make time for yourself
Schedule time for both work and entertainment. Don’t forget, play can be just as
important to your overall well-being as work. 39 Go window-shopping or work on
a hobby. Allow yourself at least a half hour each day to do something you enjoy.
♦ Make a list of things to do
Stress can result from disorganization and a feeling that “there’s so much to do, and
not enough time”. Trying to take care of everything at once can be too much for you and
as a result, you may not achieve anything. 40 Set out to do the most important task
first.
A.If you feel stress is hard to control, seek professional help.
B.Take care of yourself.
C.Running, walking, playing tennis, and working in your garden are just some of the
activities you might try.
D.You need a break from your daily routine to just relax and have fun.
E.Instead, make a list of everything you have to do, and then do one thing at a time.
