After an evening of overtime work with her colleagues at the office, Jill Bien, 48, boarded a bus bound for Chicago, where she lived. About 35 miles into the 90-mile trip, Jill felt the bus drive away onto the right shoulder(路肩)of 1-94.The bus scraped(擦挂)a concrete barrier, and then turned back into traffic.
“Stop the bus!” Jill yelled to the driver from her seat just behind him. But then she saw his seat was empty. The driver, James Rogers, 68, lay unconscious in the bus’s step. “Call 911!”Jill screamed, and with the bus rushing in and out of traffic at about 60 mph in an uncontrollable way, she leaped into the driver’s seat and grabbed the wheel.
“My life flashed before my eyes,” Jill says now. “Everyone on the bus was bouncing around; they were lying in the aisle (过道).I thought, I don’t want anybody to get hurt.” Jill carefully turned the bus onto the shoulder, bringing it to a stop.
“Thank God she got that bus over to the side“ says Marge Borkowski, who was a passenger that night. “She’s my hero.” Emergency personnel arrived a few minutes later and took11 of the bus’s 34 passengers to the hospital, where doctors treated them for minor injuries. When Jill returned home after the accident, she burst out crying, she says. “I kept visualizing(眼前浮现)it.”
Despite anxiety and injuries, Jill boarded a bus back to the office two days later. “I didn’t want my fear to build up,” she said. Killer whales(虎鲸), also known as orcas, are known for their severe attacks(攻击) on sea animals but they have never posed a threat to humans. However, since late July, the normally social animals have been intentionally attacking sailboats off the coasts of Spain and Portugal.
The strange behavior first surfaced on July 29, 2020, when a 46foot boat was repeatedly attacked for almost an hour by nine orcas, causing the boat to rotate (旋转) 180 degrees and having its engine switched off. Since then, over 30 more similar incidents have been reported. On September 23, 2020, Spain’s government banned boats of less than 50 feet in length from sailing in the 60mile stretch of the Atlantic coastline between Ferrol and the Estaca de Bares Cape, where the attacks have been occurring.
Researchers across the world are trying to explain the orcas’ behavior. Some believe it could be a result of the overfishing of the bluefin tuna—the orcas’ primary food source—which has left the area’s killer whales starving and unable to feed their babies. “I saw them look at boats carrying fish. I think they know humans are somehow related to food shortages,” says Ken Balcomb, senior scientist at the Center for Whale Research in Washington, USA. The environmentalists believe the sudden increase in boat traffic after months of absence due to restrictions on human activity last spring, could also be contributing to the agitation.
However, Alfredo López, a biology professor in Galicia, Spain, thinks the attacks are defensive measures the orcas took to protect themselves against boat injuries. The researcher came to this conclusion after looking at the videos of a few incidents and noticing that two of the young killer whales involved had serious injuries. Hopefully, the experts will be able to find a way to restore the harmony between the animals and the humans soon.
8. What do we know about orcas in paragraph 1?
A. They are friendly to humans.
B. They have changed their behavior.
C. They are famous for hunting skills.
D. They have met tough living conditions.
9. Who hold(s) the idea that fishing activities caused the incidents?
A Ken Balcomb. B. The environmentalists.
C. Alfredo López. D. Spain’s government.
10. What do the underlined words “the agitation” in paragraph 3 refer to?
A. The attacks. B. Food shortages.
C. The overfishing. D. Human activity.
11. What is the main idea of this passage?
A. A disagreement between scientists.
B. Possible reasons why killer whales are attacking boats.
C. The results of the change of the behaviors of killer whales.
D. Spanish government’s effort of protecting the fishing boats.
D
On Monday, I walked into a conference center and, instead of flashing a card with my name and photo, I positioned myself in front of a head-height camera the size of my fist. Seconds later, the screen read: “PLEASEENTER.” No one scanned the digital pass on my phone. Facial-recognition software did all the work.
As facial recognition appear in more public places including airports and concert places, you might be wondering how you’re supposed to feel about it.
Companies providing face matching software often tout (鼓吹) speed, convenience, security and contactless benefits for customers. Most also stress that it’s only a choice. While the answer comes down to the individual, you should ask yourself: Do you want this firm to store your biometric (生物统计的) information? Are you getting something useful in return?
Facial recognition works by creating a map of your face. The map contains your unique measurements — the distance between your forehead and chin, or between your eyes. They are then changed into code called a face print. However, a company that stores your face data could have an entirely different purpose than what you agreed to. Besides, you can’t always track where your face ends up: one company sold facial-recognition tech based on billions of images collected from Facebook, LinkedIn and other sources.
Before agreeing to the use of biometric data, Josef Kittler, a professor of machine intelligence at the University of Surrey in the U. K., recommends finding out three things: the purpose of collecting your data, what happens to your face image once you no longer need the service, and how the data is removed.
Face scanning will become more popular in our travels and entertainment, as well as other areas such as education and banking. We’ve just begun to understand the advantages and disadvantages.
12. What’s the author’s purpose of writing the first paragraph?
A. To tell the development of facial recognition.
B. To show the convenience of facial recognition.
C. To describe the author’s daily routine in the office.
D. To introduce the change of the author’s working style.
13. How does facial recognition technology work?
A. By collecting a person’s fingerprint. B. By scanning the eyes of an individual.
C. By making a digital copy of a person’s face. D. By analyzing the voice patterns of an individual.
14. According to Josef Kittler, what is the main concern about facial recognition technology?
A. It may cause data misuse. B. It has a limited database.
C. It lacked relevant service. D. It is not convenient enough.
15. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A Face scanning will be improved in the future. B. We only use face scanning for entertainment.
C. Face scanning is already common in all areas. D. We are still in the early stage of face scanning.

C They are famous for hunting skills.
D. They have met tough living conditions.
9. Who hold(s) the idea that fishing activities caused the incidents?
A. Ken Balcomb. B. The environmentalists.
C. Alfredo López. D. Spain’s government.
10. What do the underlined words “the agitation” in paragraph 3 refer to?
A. The attacks. B. Food shortages.
C. The overfishing. D. Human activity.
11. What is the main idea of this passage?
A. A disagreement between scientists.
B. Possible reasons why killer whales are attacking boats.
C. The results of the change of the behaviors of killer whales.
D. Spanish government’s effort of protecting the fishing boats.
B 9. A 10. A 11. B
根据第一段“Killer whales(虎鲸), also known as orcas, are known for their severe attacks(攻击) on sea animals but they have never posed a threat to humans. However, since late July, the normally social animals have been intentionally attacking sailboats off the coasts of Spain and Portugal.(杀人鲸,又称虎鲸,以其对海洋动物的猛烈攻击而闻名,但它们从未对人类构成威胁。然而,自7月下旬以来,这些通常群居的动物一直在西班牙和葡萄牙海岸附近故意攻击帆船)”可知,虎鲸从前从未伤害过人类。但是最近却开始袭击西班牙和葡萄牙海岸附近的渔船。由此可推断,虎鲸的行为有所改变。故选B。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段第二句话以及Ken Balcomb所说的话“Some believe it could be a result of the overfishing of the bluefin tuna—the orcas’ primary food source—which has left the area’s killer whales starving and unable to feed their babies. “I saw them look at boats carrying fish. I think they know humans are somehow related to food shortages,” says Ken Balcomb, senior scientist at the Center for Whale Research in Washington, USA. (一些人认为这可能是由于过度捕捞虎鲸的主要食物来源蓝鳍金枪鱼,导致该地区的虎鲸挨饿,无法喂养它们的宝宝。美国华盛顿鲸鱼研究中心的高级科学家肯·巴尔科姆说:“我看到他们看着载鱼的船。我想他们知道人类与食物短缺有某种关系。”)”可知,Ken Balcomb认为捕鱼活动导致了这些事件。故选A。
根据划线单词所在句子的前半部分“The environmentalists believe the sudden increase in boat traffic after months of absence due to restrictions on human activity last spring(环保主义者认为,由于去年春天人类活动受到限制,船上交通在几个月后突然增加)”可知,环保主义者认为去年春天人类活动受到限制,船上交通在几个月后突然增加是导致虎鲸袭击渔船行为的又一个原因。 故选A。
根据第一段“However, since late July, the normally social animals have been intentionally attacking sailboats off the coasts of Spain and Portugal.”(然而,自7月下旬以来,这种通常群居的动物在西班牙和葡萄牙海岸故意袭击帆船。)
A. Face scanning will be improved in the future. B. We only use face scanning for entertainment.
C. Face scanning is already common in all areas. D. We are still in the early stage of face scanning.
B 13. C 14. A 15. D

根据第四段中“Facial recognition works by creating a map of your face. The map contains your unique measurements—the distance between your forehead and chin, or between your eyes. They are then changed into code called a face print. (面部识别通过创建你的面部地图来工作。这张地图包含了你独特的尺寸——你的前额和下巴之间的距离,或者你的眼睛之间的距离。然后它们被转换成一种被称为面纹的代码)”可知,面部识别技术通过创建个人面部地图来工作,这个地图包含独特测量数据并转换成称为面纹的代码。故选C。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据第五段“Before agreeing to the use of biometric data, Josef Kittler, a professor of machine intelligence at the University of Surrey in the U. K., recommends finding out three things: the purpose of collecting your data, what happens to your face image once you no longer need the service, and how the data is removed. (在同意使用生物识别数据之前,英国萨里大学的机器智能教授约瑟夫·基特勒建议弄清楚三件事:收集你的数据的目的,一旦你不再需要这项服务,你的面部图像会发生什么,以及数据是如何被删除的)”可知,强调了对数据用途、处理和删除的关注,表明主要担忧是可能导致的数据滥用问题。故选A。
根据最后一段“Face scanning will become more popular in our travels and entertainment, as well as other areas such as education and banking. We’ve just begun to understand the advantages and disadvantages.

故填of。
