Growing up, Maitri Wadher, a left-hander, has struggled to cope in a world made for right-handed people. From school desks to spiral notebooks that stop the natural flow of writing, Maitri has faced tough challenges from a young age. “My mother used to tie my left hand and make me eat with my right until a doctor warned that this could significantly affect my growth and confidence,” Maitri says.
This childhood experience had gnawed (折磨) at the back of her mind, pushing her to do something to ease the lives of fellow left-handers. In September 2018, she started The Left Out Store, which makes everyday products ranging from left-handed writing tools and scissors to kitchen tools for left-handed people.
Starting The Left Out Store wasn’t in the cards for Maitri for a very long time. The idea for The Left Out Store came to Maitri in just 20 minutes during a festival at St. Joseph’s Institute of Management, where she was a post-graduate student. She presented the rough idea to judges who later became sponsors, and they enthusiastically supported it. This encouragement gave her the push to make it a market research project to test the waters and explore the potential market.
Initially, Maitri faced a few hiccups. It took her quite some time to find vendors (小贩) and make them understand how to make the products. With everything in place, Maitri went through a tough time reaching customers. The first time she made a proper sale was at an exhibition at Lalit Ashok. “People were surprised at first, but gradually more left-handed people began approaching me, and said they relate to my struggles.” Since then, she has been regularly marketing her products at exhibitions, and keeps The Left Out Store active on social media.
24.What challenge did Maitri face as a left-hander while growing up?
A.Unfair judgement. B.Lack of parents’ love.
C.Limited access to education. D.Struggle with school tools.
25.How did Maitri turn her idea into a reality?
A.By seeking student sponsors. B.By conducting market research.
C.By expanding the potential market. D.By carrying out her long-thought plan.
26.What does the underlined word “hiccups” probably mean?
A.Barriers. B.Threats C.Complaints. D.Oppositions.
27.What might be a suitable title for the passage?
A.A Left-Hander’s Struggles B.Maitri’s Marketing Strategies
C.Maitri: A Social Media Celebrity D.The Left Out Store: Maitri’s Journey

Should humans kill members of one bird species to help protect another? That’s the question scientists and conservationists are struggling with right now in the Pacific Northwest.
In a bid to save northern spotted owls from extinction, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) has suggested shooting more than 470,000 barred owls over the next 30 years. The proposal — which is still a draft and will remain open for public comment — has drawn criticism from some wildlife conservationists and highlights the difficulties land managers face while trying to maintain the delicate balance of ecosystems.
Spotted owls and barred owls are closely related. But only spotted owls are native to the Pacific Northwest. Barred owls, an alien species, have slowly come to dominate the region over the last century. Their larger size, more generalist nature and faster reproduction rate have prepared them to outcompete spotted owls, whose numbers have dropped by roughly 75 percent over the last 20 years, according to the USFWS.
Biologists have long wondered how to keep the barred owl population in check. In 2021, scientists published the results of an experiment that involved killing 2,485 barred owls in five study areas. Over five years, spotted owl survival rates increased by an average of 10 percent at the sites. But to truly recover, spotted owls might need more than five years, because they are slow to reproduce. That’s the driving factor behind the agency’s recently proposed long-term management plan.
Conservationists have mixed feelings about the plan. While they understand that science may support killing barred owls, they worry about the moral inference of killing off members of one species to save another. Bob Sallinger, executive director of the nonprofit Bird Conservation Oregon, says, “We don’t think it’s moral because they are currently doing better in the existing environment.” He describes it as a no-win situation that humans have created for ourselves.
“Rather than choosing to conserve one bird over the other, this is about conserving two species,” says Kessina Lee, supervisor of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service office in Oregon. “Spotted owls are fighting for their existence right now. However, even if the service was able to remove that number of barred owls over the next 30 years, that would represent less than 1 percent of the global population of barred owls.”
28.Why is the USFWS proposing the long-term plan?
A.To do biography research on owls. B.To recover spotted owl’s population.
C.To balance the birth rates of two owls. D.To improve spotted owl’s reproductive ability.
29.What is Paragraph 3 mainly about?
A.The relationship between two owls. B.The characteristics of spotted owls.
C.The alarming situation of spotted owls. D.The competitive advantages of barred owls.
30.What does the underlined “it” in Paragraph 5 refer to?
A.The agency’s proposal. B.Existing environment.
C.Conservationists’ concern. D.The co- existence of two owls.
31.What’s Kessina Lee’s attitude to the plan?
A.Unclear. B.Opposed. C.Favourable. D.Doubtful.
D
A team decided to perform an experiment inspired by their collective passion for Kung-fu. The group was made up of Michael Feld, a physicist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, undergraduates Ronald McNair and Stephen Wilk. They wanted to know: How can a bare hand break a solid block of wood or concrete without injury? What’s the trick?
Feld, McNair, and Wilk placed wood and concrete in a machine to determine the amount of stress needed to break the underside of the objects. A wood block can bend by about one centimetre before it breaks, which requires a force of 500 newtons. Concrete blocks only need to be bent one millimeter before breaking, but since the material is hardly bendable, that displacement requires 2,500 to 3,000 newtons. And because some energy is lost upon collision (碰撞), the fist needs to apply even more force than that in order to actually break the blocks.
Thankfully, the human hand is capable of generating a very high degree of force in a very short time. The team discovered that within this brief time, “the hand of the Kung-fu master can apply a force of more than 3,000 newtons.” The team’s model indicates that the hand must reach a speed of 6.1 meters per second to break wood and 10.6 meters per second to break concrete. They write, “the former speed is within range of the beginner, but the latter one calls for training.”
The obvious follow-up question: “How is it that the hand of the Kung-fu master is not hurt by the force of the strike?” Here, it’s science to the rescue: Human bone is five times firmer than concrete and fifty times harder to break. Of course, it’s technique, not strength, that provides the real power. “The precision to hit the center of the board makes kung-fu not only an excellent physical discipline but also a mental one.”
32.What is the motivation of the team’s experiment?
A.To assess durability of different materials.
B.To demonstrate their passion for Kung-fu.
C.To manage the trick of breaking concrete.
D.To explore the mechanics of barehanded strikes.
33.What can be inferred about barehanded breaking?
A.Bendability is a contributing factor. B.Kung-fu masters can break all objects.
C.Concrete bends more before breaking. D.More energy is lost when breaking concrete.
34.What do Kung-fu beginners need to successfully break concrete without injury?
A.A large amount of practice. B.The precise measurements.
C.Excellent academic discipline. D.A hand speed of 6.1 meters per second
35.What is the last paragraph mainly talking about concerning the strike?
A.Its follow-up experiments. B.Its influence on human bones.
C.The trick of avoiding bone injury. D.Ways to improve its effectiveness.

Lastly, drink plenty of water to counteract the dry cabin air — shoot for a glass every hour. Bring a big empty water bottle with you on the plane and once you’re comfortably seated and before the plane takes off, ask a flight attendant to get it full. 40 .
A.They aren’t only for your comfort
B.Next, pack some creature comforts
C.Then, bring about the most advanced device

NEVER STOP WALKING
When Justin was 7, he suffered from a disease that led to problems with the development of his back. Over the years, the little boy had gone through a total of five corrective surgeries. Justin could no longer walk and was limited to a wheelchair. But this did not stop him from living a normal life thanks to his mother’ S love and others’ help.
After entering high school, Justin got interested in playing the trumpet (小号) and joined the school’s band. He served as one of the band’s trumpeters and developed a strong friendship with his partner Tom. As Thanksgiving Day approached, the band intended to perform in the Thanksgiving Day Parade and every member had the chance to join in, including Justin. However, there was one obvious problem. Justin could not control his wheelchair and play the trumpet at the same time. The band director put forward an idea of one student pushing Justin during his marches. Tom immediately volunteered even though it meant he had to give up the opportunity to play his own instrument during the parade.“I do it just to make sure Justin knows that he always has a place in the band, and he always will,“ Tom said to their director secretly. From then on, the two practiced together, one playing the instrument and the other pushing the wheelchair with the rhythm of the music.
To help Justin, Tom sacrificed (牺牲) far beyond expectation. Apart from losing the chance to perform, he needed to spare more time to take care of Justin and even missed his football training several times. All of these were seen by Justin and the burden of guilt weighed heavily on his mind.“I can’t meet my own needs at the sacrifice of Tom’s chance. It is time to find a solution.” Justin thought to himself as his mother pushed him on the way home. His mother lowered her head and said,“Justin, play me your new tune.” Justin took out his trumpet and was about to play when an excellent idea came to him.

4.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
He turned around to ask his mother for help.

读后续写
One possible version:
He turned around to ask his mother for help. “Mom, could you please push me in the Thanksgiving Day Parade instead of Tom? He gave up his chance of performing to assist me.” Justin looked up at his mother, eagerly awaiting her reply. “Sure, my dear!” Mom bent and kissed his forehead. “I’m happy to join you and witness every moment of your growth.” Justin grinned from ear to ear with the huge load off his mind. With Mom’s participation, the practice went smoothly and joyfully, every member, Justin and Tom included, having a place in the performance and playing their part intently in preparation for the big day.
Thanksgiving finally came, as did Justin and mom’s performance. Dressed in the same performing suit, mom pushed Justin proudly with a bright smile on her face as Justin threw himself heart and soul into the performance. Joyful music floating in the air, the mother and son were indeed a perfect match in the parade, which soon became the center of attention. The entire audience broke into thunderous applause, not only for the whole band’s performance, but also for the love between Justin and his mother. Sometimes one person may not walk, but love and assistance can help go anywhere.

W: Yes! I’m so proud. I had the opportunity of interviewing many movie stars, including my favorite actress Anna. She succeeded in earning the Best Actress Award. While the award- winning film isn’t my favorite, I do believe it deserves the award.
M: Oh, that’s great to hear! Unfortunately, I missed your interview part because of an emergency meeting. Would you mind if we watch it now?
W: Not at all. You know, I always try to do my best, so I’m sure it won’t let you down. Plus, your favorite movie actor Colin is in the interview.
M: What are we waiting for? Let’s get started.

W: Wow, it’s really a big bookstore. What kind of book do you want to buy today?
M: I’d like to get a book about Abraham Lincoln’s life. I’m really interested in learning more about the great man.
W: It must be helpful for you to complete your paper.
M: You’ re right. And you?
W: I’m looking for some fantasy books.
M: You must love this kind of book very much.
W: Not really. Adventure stories are my favorite. Actually I need books for my younger brother. He is turning fourteen this weekend.
M: How about buying the Harry Potter series for him?
W: He read those books two years ago, but he hasn’t read The Lord of the Rings and The Hunger Games yet.
M: Will you buy both of the series for him?
W: No. Just the latter. I don’t have so much money today.

M: I can’t believe this. I have been on the phone with my bank all day and they still haven’t fixed my problem.
W: Is it a credit card problem?
M: Yes. My credit card information was stolen. When I got my bill in the mail, I saw there were many unfamiliar purchases on it.
W: That’s terrible. Did they take a lot of money?
M: Yes, and I am very upset because the bank is not helping me quickly. I have talked to many different managers already.
W: Doesn’t the bank’s owner need to make the decision to give you your money back?
M: No. I just have to prove that these purchases were not made by me.
W: I hope you can fix this problem soon. Something similar happened to my husband’ s mother recently. She was tricked into giving away some important information over the phone.
M: I think the person who stole my information got it from the Internet. I bought a collection of movies recently. I won’t be doing that again unless the website is sure to be safe. It’s honestly my fault for being careless.
W: You can never be too careful. Well, your problem is inspiring me to look into protecting my account better. I think I can pay my bank more to help me.

W: When all the animals of a species die out, the whole world loses. That creature is gone forever. Many people are worried about this happening to a large number of wild animals. They spend time campaigning to help preserve wildlife. One of the best- known preservationists is Caroline Smith. She is an attractive young woman who works for the National Grand Zoo. Caroline Smith’s vast knowledge of animals makes her a frequent guest on TV talk shows. She has been on the“ Kyrie Belle Show” over forty times. She explains common errors in thinking about wildlife. For example, gorillas aren’t the violent, cruel and rude animals they appear to be. They are really quite shy. Monkeys that smile aren’t as happy as they seem. In fact, a monkey’s ear- to- ear smile means“ watch out”. Snakes really help nature by eating harmful insects. So people should try to protect them. Caroline Smith hopes that once people understand animals better, they will do their best to preserve them. How lucky animals are to have a friend like Caroline Smith!
