In 2015, Chennai was destroyed by one of the worst floods in over a century, leaving thousands without food, water and supplies. During the flood, many heroes arose, one of whom was Santosh, a young man who owned a take-out restaurant in Chennai.
When the first flood hit in November, he got a call from a company called Naga Rava. The company asked him to prepare 5,000 packets of food and give them to the flood victims. He, with his partners, took the order, cooked for 14 hours and delivered(递送) them. But that night, as they sat together discussing the event of the day, they actually felt ashamed(羞愧). “Here was a man not even from Chennai and he was going out of his way to help the affected people. We, while living here, had not really done anything ourselves for our own people,” said Santosh later.
He then began the groundwork for a collection to help cook more dishes. Little did he know that the November flood was just the beginning, and the real show was about to begin. The December flood affected them all. His own house got flooded and his family was trapped on the second floor. They lost phone connection and electricity. In spite of this, Santosh went back out into the flood, creating a kitchen and preparing food all by himself for the victims.
He did not sleep for four days, taking a one-hour break every day as he kept on cooking. As word got out about this man’s effort, others stepped out to join him. From children to the elderly, strangers came to help him in cooking, packing and transporting food. Up to 300 volunteers worked together to make it all happen. By the time the fourth day finally came to an end, Santosh and his team had prepared 170,000 food boxes and delivered them to people in need.

When I first launched my business about 10 years ago and started working in Mexico, I noticed co-workers and friends greeting each other with a brief hug and a kiss on the cheek. So I started doing that too, as I believed it was the custom, until one day my business partner pulled me aside and said, “Can you stop hugging and kissing the receptionist every time you come into the office? I think it sends the wrong message.”
I didn’t understand the culture well enough to appreciate the unwritten rules. Yet, as CEO of a fast-growing multi-national company, that’s exactly what I needed to learn — and fast. I not only wanted to stop sending the wrong message, but I wanted to start sending the right messages. I wanted to understand how to tap into the diverse aspects of Latino culture while staying true to the culture of my own country and business. Expanding to other geographies only increases the importance of sending the right messages that support a more open and diverse workforce.
“As a CEO, it is important to learn some of the basic phrases in the native languages of your employees — it shows your respect for their culture.”
Every culture has its own set of primary cultural drivers. In the U. S we tend to be driven by popularity, success and financial reward. Other regions’ drivers can include family pride or community contribution. By learning these drivers and how they impact your relationships, you can build trust truly within your company. For example, in Northern Ireland and Mexico, I learned that family units stay close together and often meet every week for a meal, and co-workers are occasionally invited to these family functions. While this is not a regular practice in the U. S., I found that joining these family meals was crucial for building trust with my colleagues.
Over the years, I have learned to talk openly about these awkward aspects of culture and diversity. They need to be tackled head-on to come to a solution. By doing so, you can build trust and bridge large differences that lead to better productivity, higher levels of innovation, and a more enjoyable company culture that represents every culture that makes up your business. As leaders, it is our job to put these issues on the table and hammer through them sincerely --- no matter the cultural divide.
28. The author mentions hugging and kissing on the cheek to _________.
A. demonstrate he/ she is integrated in Mexico
B. provide an example of his misunderstanding
C. support he/ she is fully aware of the custom
D. compare body language in different cultures
29. What can we learn from the 4th paragraph?
A. People in U. S bank on family functions.
B. People in Mexico focus more on success.
C. Cultural motivations vary with the country.
D. Building trust mainly relies on socializing.
30. Which of the following can replace the underlined phrase “hammer through” in the last paragraph?
A. deal with B. look forward to C. burn up D. be proud of
31. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. What is cultural diversity? B. What is proper body language?
C. How to send the right messages? D. How to build trust in a diverse culture?
B 29. C 30. A 31. D
第二段首句“I didn’t understand the culture well enough to appreciate the unwritten rules. Yet, as CEO of a fast-growing multi-national company, that’s exactly what I needed to learn — and fast.(我不太了解那里的文化,无法欣赏那些不成文的规定。然而,作为一家快速发展的跨国公司的首席执行官,这正是我需要学习的——而且要快)”及第一段“So I started doing that too, as I believed it was the custom, until one day my business partner pulled me aside and said, ‘Can you stop hugging and kissing the receptionist every time you come into the office? I think it sends the wrong message.’(所以我也开始这样做,因为我相信这是一种习俗,直到有一天我的商业伙伴把我拉到一边说:‘你能不能不要每次来到公司就拥抱和亲吻接待员吗?我认为这在传递误的信息’)”可知,这篇文章主要讲作者认识到应该了解这个国家的文化,而第一段介绍自己和同事拥抱亲吻脸颊是举例证明由于自己不了解当地文化而发生了误会。故选 B项。
【29题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段中“Every culture has its own set of primary cultural drivers. (每种文化都有自己的一套主要文化驱动因素)”可知,文化驱动因素是因国家不同而变化的,下文就是对此举例论证。故选C项。
【30题详解】
词句猜测题。根据划线词上文“Over the years, I have learned to talk openly about these awkward aspects of culture and diversity. They need to be tackled head-on to come to a solution. By doing so, you can build trust and bridge large differences that lead to better productivity, higher levels of innovation, and a more enjoyable company culture that represents every culture that makes up your business.(多年来,我学会了公开谈论文化和多样性的这些棘手的问题。 故选A项。
根据第二段“I didn’t understand the culture well enough to appreciate the unwritten rules. Yet, as CEO of a fast-growing multi-national company, that’s exactly what I needed to learn — and fast.(我不太了解那里的文化,无法欣赏那些不成文的规定。然而,作为一家快速发展的跨国公司的首席执行官,这正是我需要学习的——而且要快)”及最后一段“Over the years, I have learned to talk openly about these awkward aspects of culture and diversity. They need to be tackled head-on to come to a solution. By doing so, you can build trust and bridge large differences that lead to better productivity, higher levels of innovation, and a more enjoyable company culture that represents every culture that makes up your business. D
If there were an app on your phone that could improve your memory, would you try it? Who wouldn't want a better memory? After all, our memory can be easily damaged by diseases, injuries, mental health conditions and, most particularly for all of us, aging.
Nowadays, there are a large number of apps that provide memory training on our phones. Can they help you remember to take medicine, do better on a school exam, remember the name of the person whom you met yesterday? Some scientists question whether this is possible. Undoubtedly, many of the brain training companies today exaggerate the potential benefits of using their apps.
Scientists have provided evidence that brain training does not benefit everyone in the same way. It is suggested that little consideration has been given to who would benefit most from those brain training apps. Will it only be those who have some form of memory impairment(缺陷),or can it also help those eager for self-improvement even though they are already functioning very well?
To overcome these limitations, our team has started a new study aiming to find 30,000 volunteers to help us determine which form of training may be best for individuals. Our goal is to avoid a one — size — fits — all approach. Instead of focusing on the simple question of whether brain training works, we are looking to engage the whole population in a new challenge to test for whom brain training works, and under which conditions.
32. What can affect our memory in particular?
A. Getting ill. B. Getting old. C. Being upset. D. Being injured.
33. Which word best describes the scientists' attitude to memory training apps?
A. Supportive. B. Doubtful. C. Neutral. D. Indifferent.
34. Why did the author's team conduct the research?
A. To test whether brain training works.
B. To develop a training that suits all the people.
C. To compete with other memory training organizations.
D. To find the best form of training for different people.
35. Where is the article probably taken from?
A. A fashion magazine. B. A tour guide.
C. A science website. D. A personal blog.

You might say “to get exercise” and you’d be right. To have fun? That’s true, too. But there’s more.”(为什么运动? 下文“According to the Women’s Sports Foundation, girls who play sports get a lot more than just a good figure.”(根据女子运动基金会的说法,参加运动的女孩不只是身材好。) D.“In fact, there are at least 5 more reasons.”(事实上,至少还有5个原因。)
2.根据上文“Girls who play sports do better in school. You might think that playing sports will take up all your study time.”(做运动的女孩在学校表现更好。 下文“Exercise improves learning, memory, and concentration, which can give active girls an advantage in the classroom.”(锻炼可以提高学习能力、记忆力和注意力,这可以让活跃的女孩在课堂上占有优势。) G项“But research shows girls who play sports do better in school than those who don’t.”(但研究表明,参加体育运动的女孩比不参加体育运动的女孩在学校表现更好。)
下文“When you work with coaches, trainers, and teammates to win games and achieve goals, you’re learning how be successful.
根据下文“Playing sports can reduce stress and help you feel a little happier.”(运动可以减少压力,帮助你感觉更快乐。) A项“Exercise cuts the pressure.”(运动减少压力)切题。故选A。

D Building trust mainly relies on socializing.
30. Which of the following can replace the underlined phrase “hammer through” in the last paragraph?
A. deal with B. look forward to C. burn up D. be proud of
31. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A What is cultural diversity? B. What is proper body language?
C. How to send the right messages? D. How to build trust in a diverse culture?
