A. a movie review B. a fitness magazine C. a coffee advertisement D. a hotel brochure B Ten years ago, I went on a vacation in Italy. After climbing up a hill for a panoramic (全景的) view of the blue sea, white buildings and green olive trees, I paused to catch my breath and then positioned myself to take the best photo of this panorama. Unfortunately, just as I took out my camera, a woman approached from behind, and planted herself right in front of my view. Like me, this woman was here to stop, sigh and appreciate the view. Patient though I was, after about 15 minutes, I grew upset. Was it too much to ask her to move so I could take just one picture of the landscape? Sure, I could have asked her, but something prevented me from doing so. She seemed so content in her observation. I didn’t want to mess with that. Another 15 minutes passed and I grew bored. The woman was still there. I decided to take the photo anyway. Now when I look at the photo, I think her presence in the photo is what makes the image interesting. The landscape, beautiful on its own, somehow comes to life and breathes because this woman is engaging with it. This photo, with the unique beauty that unfolded before me and that woman who “ruined” it, now hangs on a wall in my bedroom. What would she think if she knew that her figure is captured and frozen on some stranger’s bedroom wall? A bedroom, after all, is a very private space, in which some woman I don’t even know has been immortalized (使永存). In some ways, she lives in my house. Perhaps we all live in each other’s spaces. Perhaps this is what photos are for: to remind us that we all appreciate beauty, that we all share a common desire for pleasure, for connection, for something that is greater than us. That photo is a reminder, a captured moment, an unspoken conversation between two women, separated only by a thin square of glass. 24. What happened when the author was about to take a photo? A. Her camera stopped working. B. A friend approached from behind. C. Someone asked her to leave. D. A woman blocked her view. 25. According to the author, the woman was probably _______________. A. losing her patience B. enjoying herself C. waiting for the sunset D. thinking about her past 26. In the author’s opinion, what makes the photo so alive? A. The woman’s existence in the photo. B. The perfect positioning of the camera. C. The rich color of the landscape. D. The soft sunlight that summer day. 27. The photo on the bedroom wall enables the author to better understand ______________. A. the need to be close to nature B. the importance of private space C. the shared passion for beauty D. the joy of the vacation in Italy C A student stands before a shopkeeper on a Chinese market street. The shopkeeper announces that he has many things to sell, from cakes to postcards. The student is pondering (思索) the selection. Like many people learning a new language, he must consider grammar, pronunciation and tenses before answering. When it comes to Mandarin (普通话), that is especially difficult. This scene is not actually playing out in China, but at an American university where a classroom has been equipped with a learning game, enhanced by AI. The project is the result of collaboration between IBM Research and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI). The class, called AI-assisted Immersive Chinese, aims to create the kind of interactions a student could normally only get in a study-abroad program. The class is built like a video game. Students enter a classroom with a 360-degree display to face a huge screen. They can bargain with digitized shopkeepers selling fruit or order Peking duck from a waiter at a restaurant. The conversational skills these avatars (虚拟化身) have make it possible for them to respond in real time to the students, with a degree of unpredictability that makes it similar to communicating with real humans. Unlike the real world, where people may make embarrassing public mistakes in the service of learning a new language, here students can pause the scene after messing up a pronunciation and replay it again to fix mistakes as needed. “We’ve enabled the class to be like a game,” said Hui Su, the project’s lead researcher. “And like any game, there are multiple levels with growing difficulty. The students who signed up for this course are at varying levels of Mandarin proficiency. They can set the level of dialogue difficulty individually and progress at the best speed for them.” The germ of this idea appeared in 2013, when some language teachers and some game development teachers at RPI wondered if they could band together to create a language learning game. But the language interaction capability of the technology available was limited. In 2016, after RPI had teamed up with IBM, they finally had all the tech they needed to create what they wanted. It was a perfect marriage of RPI’s immersive technology and IBM’s speech recognition software. The system could have taught any language, but Su chose Mandarin. “Mandarin is one of the most difficult languages to learn,” said Su. “It’s a tonal language, with four different tones. Each character can have four different meanings when pronounced with different syllabic (音节的) emphasis.” 28. What is the student mentioned in paragraph 1 doing? A. He is travelling in China. B. He is programming a play. C. He is considering his shopping selection. D. He is learning Mandarin in a certain scene. 29. What does AI-assisted Immersive Chinese offer? A. A new communication program in China. B. Real-life Chinese interaction environment. C. Guidance on playing a Chinese video game. D. A chance of improving social interaction skills. 30. What is stressed in Hui Su’s words in paragraph 5? A. The feature of a good game. B. The wide acceptance of this project. 丰城九中校本资料 第 5 页/(共 8 页) 高四期中英语 第 6 页/(共 8 页) 丰城九中校本资料 C. That students are keen on Mandarin. D. That students can find their own study pace in the project. 31. What does the underlined word “germ” in paragraph 6 mean? A. Popularity. B. Bacterium. C. Origin. D. Development. D The northern bald ibis (隐鹮) once flying over North Africa and much of Europe disappeared from Europe by the 17th century. But raising and rewilding efforts over the last 20 years helped the bird population grow. However, the birds don’t know which direction to fly to migrate without the guidance of wild-born birds. In 2002, Waldrappteam, a conservation and research group based in Austria, stepped in to help. Scientists at Waldrappteam raise the birds and teach them how to fly to warmer areas. Fritz and the Waldrappteam have increased the number of northern bald ibis in Central Europe from zero to almost 300 since the start of their project in 2002. In their attempt to reintroduce the continentally extinct migratory bird species, his team found one problem. Humans have led the birds now for 17 years to warm places like Tuscany, Italy. But due to climate change, when released, the birds raised by humans flew in that direction and would die in winter. They have had to help the birds change the route to a winter home in southern Spain. To prepare them for travel, the humans begin working with the baby birds. The foster parent humans want the birds to connect with them so they will trust them along the migration route. They then sit on the back of a small aircraft, waving and cheering for the birds as they fly. Fritz knew his work would be possible because he saw the work of Canadian naturalist Lishman. Lishman taught Canadian geese to fly alongside his small plane. Fritz’s team efforts have worked. The first bird independently migrated back to Bavaria from Tuscany in 2011. Earlier this month from an airfield in upper Bavaria, the team guided 36 birds along one stage through blue skies and a wind from behind them that increased their speed. Fritz said the effort is bigger than just the northern bald ibises. He hopes the group’s work offers a possibility for helping other threatened migratory species to fly. 32. What has been done in the last 20 years to save the northern bald ibises? A. Freeing them into the wild at birth. B. Raising and putting them into the wild. C. Training them to find food in the wild. D. Improving environmental issues for them. 33. What did Fritz and his team find about migrating bald ibises? A. They had no sense of direction by nature. B. They suffered in winter for lack of shelter. C. Many of them were hunted on their routes. D. Their former migrating destination became cold. 34. What’s the importance of the team’s work according to Fritz? A. Feeding endangered species and returning them to nature. B. Studying the impact of climate change on bird migration. C. Offering possible ways to help other endangered species to migrate. D. Raising people’s awareness of promoting those endangered species. 35. What does the text mainly talk about? A. Flying routes of the migratory birds. B. Humans’ efforts to guide birds to migrate. C. The increase in the population of bald ibis. D. Migratory bird species suffering climate change. 第二节(共 5 小题;每小题 2.5 分,满分 12.5 分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 I’m often asked how to study English effectively. To me, they mean growth under the care of others. I learned this the hard way. I used to be very shy and often felt lonely. Although I did well in all the academic subjects, I was afraid of physical education. My classmates often laughed at me. “Look at that girl,” they said. “Her feet don’t leave the ground when she runs!” Their words embarrassed me. Things would go on like that if not for a sports meet in my high school. By mistake, my name was put on the list of those who would compete in the women’s 1500 meters race. By the time people found the mistake, it was too late to change. My deskmate was a natural athlete. She said to me, “I couldn’t run that race in your place, because I’ve signed up for three items already.” Other athletic girls of the class said the same. I was utterly dumbfounded (目瞪口呆). 1500 meters! Running against the best runners from other classes! And in front of students of the entire school! It would be the worst nightmare (噩梦) I’d ever have! “Don’t lose heart. You still have time to catch up because there is still one month before the sports meet,” they all said this to me, including my teacher. My deskmate patted me on the shoulder, “Cool! You will run for our class! And we will do training together.” Yes, this is not just for myself, but for my class too, I said to myself. But still, 1500 meters to me was like Mount Everest (珠穆朗玛峰) to a beginning climber. I had no idea even how to start my preparation. Fortunately, my deskmate gave me a hand. Every afternoon after class, several of us ran together. When the fear of being laughed at struck me, I saw others running right beside me. They gave me strength. While we were running, some others would stand by the tracks cheering for us. One month certainly couldn’t make me a good runner. 注意: 1. 续写词数应为 150 左右; 2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 However, when I was standing behind the start line, I no longer felt lonely or afraid. Despite the cheering of my classmates, I was almost the last to cross the finish line.
