It’s easy to think “that will never happen to me,” but natural disasters (灾难) are becoming both more common and serious. Millions of families face floods, tornadoes and other natural disasters every year. In Australia, for example, its wildfires from 2019 to 2020 were caused by the high temperature and a drought (干旱), taking away the lives of hundreds of people and billions (十亿) of animals. While you can’t stop disasters from happening, you can stay safe during one if you know what to do. Flood Floods can happen very suddenly. Flood water can be deeper than it looks. It can carry you away, so stay away! Glass, snakes, and dirty things can be in flood water. They can make you sick, so don’t drink it even if you are thirsty. Tornado A tornado happens during some storms. If there’s a tornado warning, go someplace, such as a small and sturdy (结实的) bathroom, which is safe from the wind and flying things. Remember to keep away from windows or anything heavy that might fall on1 you. Get down low and cover your head with your arms. Earthquake You can stay safe during an earthquake by moving away from things that might fall. Get down under something that's strong if you can't rush out of the building right away. Protect your neck and head with your arm. If you're outside, go to an open space. Stay away from trees or anything that might fall over and hurt you. Bushfire Bushfires, also known as wildfires, are common across the world during the hotter months. It is important that you try to stay calm in a bushfire. Some fires can start so quickly that they threaten (威胁) homes and lives within minutes, so your safest choice is always to leave early. You'd better prepare an emergency survival kit and have it handy at all times. No one wants to be caught in a dangerous and extreme situation. If the unthinkable does take place, having a plan and knowing what to do could make all the difference for you and your loved ones. 1.The writer mentions Australian wildfires to show ________. A.a natural disaster will never happen to us B.the fires can cause the death of people and animals C.natural disasters are becoming more and more serious D.the high temperature and a drought may lead to wildfires 2.When disasters happen, what can you do to keep safe? A.Drink flood water if you are thirsty when a flood happens. B.Stop moving and wait for other people’s help in a bushfire. C.Stay away from windows or flying things when a tornado comes. D.Stay under the trees after getting out of buildings in an earthquake. 3.Which of the following would be the best title for the passage? A.The Predictions about Natural Disasters B.The Ways to Keep Safe in Natural Disasters C.The Reasons Why Natural Disasters Happen D.The Types of Natural Disasters around the World 二 It’s said that cats are not just pets to us all these years. They are, in fact, learning from their owners and taking them as models. Scary, huh? A new study from the University of Messina shows that indoor cats who live closely to their owners copy the lives of their owners. For example, they sleep at the same time and eat at the same time. Just like a parent for a child, the same is true for a cat owner and his cat. Many owners think their cats are as family members, so they spend much time with cats, hoping to give the best care and love for their cats. This is one of reasons the cats learn from their owner’s actions. Another reason is that cats are clever animals with a long memory. Jane Brunt, director of the Catalyst Council, told Discovery News. “Cats watch us and notice our actions, knowing where their food is and what time to eat meals, where the washing areas are and how to open the cupboard door that’s closed.” A new study also shows that cats understand 25—35 basic men’s words, such as food, eat, sit, no, stay, and stand. If owners train a cat to learn these words, cats will got closer to them. But in fact, cats can’t understand our ‘meows’. So try to do better when you are in front of cats. If you spend a lot of time searching the kitchen, your cat will copy you and take food to its bowl for the night meal, too. That’s why cat owners and cats overweight rates often seem to synchronize. Next time you reach for your kitchen, think twice. If your cat is watching, maybe she will overeat as well. 4.The text is mainly about ________. A.cats and owners B.cats and home C.cats and language D.cats and parents 5.According to the passage, what does the underlined word “synchronize” mean? A.change quickly B.go down C.get lower D.be the same 6.According to the passage, which of the following is True? A.Cats can learn from men’s actions. B.Cat can’t find food from closed cupboard. C.Cats are always looking at their owners. D.Cats understand most of our language. 7.The writer will probably agree that __________. A.people need to live with the cats B.children can keep cats in their houses C.people should share the story of cats and men D.pet owners should have healthier ways of life 三 Dr. Seuss and The Cat in the Hat The Cat in the Hat is a rhymed children’s book written by the American writer Dr. Seuss. The elephants in the herd usually depend on each other for help when they are in trouble. The leader (头领) of the group is usually a clever and strong female (雌性的). She travels at the head of the herd and is followed by the other females and their young. The male elephants follow last. When the danger comes, the male (雄性) elephants make a circle (圈) around the weaker (更虚弱的) animals and protect them. A sick elephant is not left behind to die. If an elephant is sick, the whole herd stops traveling until it gets well. When an elephant is hurt, two others walk on both sides of it and support it with their bodies. A member of the herd may be caught in a trap (陷阱). Then the others try to help it. An elephant herd is just like a human’s family. Elephants love the young in the group and give them special care and love. For example, they help young animals stay afloat (漂浮着) when the herd crosses a river. They work together to help a baby elephant to get to the safety when it goes to a dangerous place. The way elephants love and care the youngsters is like ours. When a female elephant gives birth to her young baby, she will go out of the herd and she usually leaves the herd for a short time. However, she takes another female along to act as an “aunt”. The aunt stands beside and helps the mother with her new-born baby. In this way, the whole herd protects its newest member. That’s the elephant herd. B.Elephants only give the young elephants special care and love. C.Elephants try their best to help each other when they are in trouble. D.The female elephant leaves the herd forever after having babies. 五 Owls are active mainly at night. They hunt when it’s completely dark. Most of us go about our business in the daytime. We hardly ever see owls, but many of us like these night birds very much. Our love for owls has a long history, and it’s in all cultures. No matter how far you go back, there are always some types of artwork or story about an owl. These days, we can find owls on company logos, in children’s book, etc. So, what is it about owls that makes them so popular? Some bird researchers believe owls popularity lies largely in their “cool” looks. Their eyes have developed into large ones, and they use such big eyes to see clearly in the dark. Unlike human eyes, their eyes are cylindrical. So, owls cannot roll their eyes. Their heads have to do most of the rolling-around work. It’s also for this reason that owls can turn their heads almost entirely around on their necks. Owls also use sound to hunt. Their ears are lopsided-the left ear is a bit higher than the right ear. A noise goes in one ear before it arrives in the other. This helps owls tell which direction a sound is coming from. To make their sense of hearing even better, the owl’s entire face acts like a satellite dish for sound waves. Their mouths are tiny so that they won’t get in the way. Thanks to such unusual looks and abilities, owls became known as mysterious (神秘的) animals. Over the centuries, lots of myths (神话) about them have been created. Some have described owls as the goddess of wisdom. Some have seen them as witches. These stories have made more people become interested in owls and made these birds become more popular. 17.What is special about their ears? A.Their ears are cylindrical. B.Their ears are like a satellite dish. C.Their ears won’t get in the way. D.The left ear is a bit higher than the right ear. 18.Which of the following is NOT the reason that owls become so popular? One day a big wolf came and started saying, “This is my forest and I am bigger and stronger than you. So you will have to move out of the forest by tomorrow or I will destroy (摧毁) your house.” Later that night Furry and his friends were thinking what to do. Furry suggested that they should build a trap (陷阱) to catch the wolf and teach him a lesson that there was somebody stronger than him. The beavers decided it would be a deep hole covered with sticks on it. One of the beavers asked, “How are we going to do that?” Furry suggested that they could ask the rabbits for help to build the trap. About one hour later the beavers went to the rabbits’ house and explained what was going to happen tomorrow in the morning. The rabbits agreed to help. It took them the whole night but they finished it by the morning. A great number of people got interested, but in the nature, besides golden, the marigold is brown. It is not easy to get the white one. So after they were excited for some time, many people forgot the announcement. One normal day after 20 years, the college received a letter and 100 seeds of pure white marigold. It was from an old woman of over 70 years old. Some experts in the college doubted it, but not let her down, those seeds finally took root(根) in the earth. After one year, the field was covered by pure white marigolds. Therefore, the old woman who was always unknown to public became a new hit. The old woman was a flower-lover. When she read the announcement 20 years ago, she got very excited like others. But her eight children were totally against her decision. After all, a woman who never knew the seed genetics(遗传学) couldn’t complete what the experts could never do, so her thought was only a day dream. Still, the old woman didn’t change her mind and went on working. She planted some of the most common seeds and took good care of them. A year later, when the marigolds came out, she chose the fainest(最暗淡的) one from those golden and brown flowers and got the best seeds. The next year, she again grew them and chose. Day after day, year after year, through many seasons, the old woman’s husband died, her children flew far, a lot of things happened in her life, but only the wish to grow the pure white marigold took root in her heart. Finally, after 20 years on the day we all know, in the garden she saw a marigold, which was as white as silver or snow. A problem even experts couldn’t deal with was solved by an old woman who didn’t understand genetics. Was it a miracle(奇迹) ? To me, it’s very much like watching a silly comedy show on television. But, let me first say that not everything in the movie is bad. The main characters are funny and lovable. Linda is cute, Sam is funny and Mr. Timmy, the dog, is a perfect partner to the two teenage crime fighters. The producers have also come up with exciting new music. While the characters in the movie are fine, the plot is too simple. “They look for the bad guys, they find the bad guys, and then they catch the bad guys.” Boring! No difference from so many television programmes that we have seen before. Here’s another reason why I don’t like the plot. Two teenagers and a little dog act like they are smarter than experienced policemen and criminals. This may be a comedy, but it isn’t funny. It seems that Director James Ma has made this comedy for people of all ages to enjoy. But, in my opinion, he has failed and it is not worth seeing. 46.What you have read is a ________. A.review B.report C.guide D.notice 47.What kind of movie is The Teen Cops? A.Cartoon. B.Documentary. C.Action movie. D.Comedy. 48.How many main characters are there in the movie? A.3. B.4. C.5. D.6. 49.The underlined word “plot” in the third paragraph has the closest meaning with ________. A.story B.programme C.music D.dressing 50.Generally, what does the writer think of the movie? A.Moving. B.Exciting. C.Boring. D.Encouraging. 十二 If you’ve ever seen an alpaca (羊驼), you might just think they’re fuzzy and cute. Now, it looks like these animals might be able to help scientists find a vaccine (疫苗) for COVID-19. Australian scientists are studying alpacas. These animals have a unique immune response Scientists used to use them to do research on viruses (病毒) like HIV. Now they have found that when alpacas are infected (感染) with COVID-19, their bodies react in a special way. “Alpacas and animals like them (such as camels) actually create two different types of antibodies (抗体). One is similar to the type we (humans) make, but they also create these things called nanobodies (纳米抗体),” said Michael James, a researcher who took part in the study. The alpacas produced these nanobodies after researchers put a COVID-19 viral spike protein (棘突蛋白) into their bodies. It is this protein that allows COVID-19 to infect our cells (细胞). The nanobodies, however, stop infection from happening by blocking (阻隔) the protein. You can think of our cells as “locks”— and the viral spike protein as a “key”. James said the nanobodies plug up the “lock” so that the “key” cannot get in. Although the results look good so far, it will take some time to produce a vaccine based on the findings. The nanobodies require far more research to make sure they are both effective and safe. Since the nanobodies are new, they must be tested very strictly in a laboratory before they can be tried on humans, according to James. 51.Why are scientists studying alpacas? A.To help with research on HIV. B.To develop a vaccine for COVID-19. C.To invent effective medicines for HIV. D.To test new medicines for COVID-19. 52.What is the role of nanobodies? A.Protecting cells from infection. B.Producing viral spike proteins. C.Infecting body cells. D.Killing viruses. 53.What are Paragraphs 3-4 about? A.How animals create antibodies. B.How alpacas’ bodies react to viruses. C.How alpacas get infected with COVID-19. D.How animals protect themselves from danger. 54.What does the phrase “plug up” mean? A.add B.connect C.fill D.start 55.What do we know from the story? A.The research on nanobodies uses a special method. B.The research on nanobodies hasn’t gone well. C.The nanobodies have been tried on humans. D.The nanobodies will continue to be tested. 十三 The Exploding Lakes of Cameroon What comes to mind when you think of a lake? You probably imagine a pretty scene with blue water, birds, and fish. For the people in the northwestern Cameroon, however, the image is very different. For them, lakes may mean terrible disasters. In 1984, poisonous gases exploded out of Lake Monoun and came down into the nearby villages, killing thirty-seven people. Two years later, Lake Nyos erupted a cloud of gases rolled down the hills and into the valleys and killed 1,700 people. Lake Nyos and Lake Monoun are crater (火山口) lakes. They were formed when water collected in the craters of old volcanoes. The volcanoes under Lake Nyos and Lake Monoun are not active anymore. However, poisonous gases from the center of the earth continue to flow up through cracks in the bottom of the lake. This is normal in a crater lake. In most crater lakes, these gases are released often because the water “turns over” regularly. That is, the water from the bottom of the lake rises and mixes with the water at the top, allowing the gases to escape slowly. However, in Lakes Nyos and Monoun, there is no regular turning over. No one knows the reason for this fact, but as a result, these lakes have more gases tapped at the bottom than other crater lakes. In fact, scientists who have studied Lakes Nyos and Monoun have found 16,000 times more gases. When a strong wind, cool weather, a storm, or a landslide (滑坡) causes the water to turn over suddenly, the gases escape in a violent explosion. In the past, no one knew when the gases might explode, so there was no way for the villagers to escape disaster. Now scientists from the United States, France, and Cameroon have found a way to reduce the gas pressure at the bottom of Lake Nyos. They stood a 672-foot plastic pipe in the middle of the lake, with one end of the pipe near the bottom and the other end in the air. Near the top of the pipe, the team put several holes that could be opened or closed by a computer. Now, when the gas pressure gets too high, the holes are opened and some of the gas-filled water shoots up through the pipe into the air like a fountain. With less pressure, a disastrous explosion is much less likely. However, the scientists are not sure that one pipe will be enough to prevent explosions. They hope to put in others soon and they plan to install a similar pipe and a computer system at Lake Monoun as well. To protect people nearby until all of the pipes are in place, the scientists have installed early warning systems at both lakes. If the gas pressure rises to a dangerous level, computers will set off loud sirens (警报) and bright lights to warn the people in the villages. That way, they will have time to escape from the dangerous gases. 56.What will happen when Lake Nyos and Lake Monoun explode? A.Water will flow down the hills. There are also desert insects which survive as inactive larvae(幼虫). In addition, difficult as it is to believe, there are desert fish which can survive through years of drought in the form of inactive eggs. These are the shrimps(虾) that live in the Mojave Desert, an intensely dry region in the south-west of the United State where shade temperatures of over 50℃ are often recorded. The eggs of the Mojave shrimps are the size and have the appearance of grains of sand. When sufficient spring rain falls to form a lake, once every two to five years, these eggs hatch. Then the water is soon filled with millions of tiny shrimps about a millimeter long which feed on tiny plant and animal organisms which also grow in the temporary desert lake. Within a week, the shrimps grow from their original 1 millimeter to a length of about 1.5 centimeters. Throughout the time when the shrimps are rapidly maturing, the water in the lake equally rapidly evaporates. Therefore, for the shrimps it is a race against time. By the 12th day, however, when they are about 3 centimeters long, hundreds of tiny eggs form on the underbodies of the females. Usually by this time, all that remains of the lake is a large, muddy patch of wet soil. On the 13th day and the next, during the final hours of their brief lives, the shrimps lay their eggs in the mud. Then, having ensured that their species will survive, the shrimps die as the last of the water evaporates. If sufficient rain falls the next year to form another lake, the eggs hatch, and once again the shrimps pass rapidly through their cycle of growth, adulthood, egg-laying, and death. Some years there is insufficient rain to form a lake; in this case, the eggs will remain dormant for another year, or even longer if necessary. Very, very occasionally, perhaps twice in a hundred years, sufficient rain falls to form a deep lake that lasts a month or more. In this case, the species passes through two cycles of growth, egg-laying, and death. Thus, on such occasions, the species multiplies considerably, which further ensures its survival. 61.Which of the following is the most distinctive feature of Mojave shrimps? A.They live a brief and tough life. B.They feed on plant and animal organisms. C.Their eggs can survive years of drought. D.They lay their eggs in the mud. 62.The word “dormant” (in Para 4) most probably means ________. A.inactive B.strong C.alert D.soft 63.What can be inferred from the passage? A.Appearance and size are important factors for life to survive in the desert. B.A species must be able to multiply quickly in order to survive in the desert. C.For some species one life cycle in a year is enough to survive the desert drought. D.Some species develop a unique life pattern to survive in severe conditions. 64.Which of the following statements is NOT a fact? A.The eggs of Mojave shrimps are as small as the grains of seeds. B.The whole cycle of growth of the shrimps is a race against time. C.It is difficult to believe that these shrimps can survive droughts in the desert. D.The amount of rain has a strong impact on the number of the shrimps. 65.The passage mainly deals with ________. A.the life span of the Mojave shrimps B.the survival of desert shrimps C.the creatures living in the Mojave desert D.the importance of water to life in the desert 十五 A hunter (猎人) once lost his way deep inside the forest. As hard as he tried, he could not find a way out of the forest, nor could he find any food to eat. He started feeling so hungry that he could eat an elephant in one go. Disappointed, he lost all hope. And that was exactly when an apple tree caught his sight. He collected some apples to feed him for the rest of his search. As he ate the first apple, he felt thankful for finding the tree. He thanked the forest. He could not believe his luck when he ate the first apple, but he was less thankful while eating the second apple and even less thankful after eating the fifth apple. Somehow, with each passing apple, his hunger refused to go away and he became unhappier. He couldn’t enjoy his tenth apple at all. Why? He had already taken for granted (恩赐的) the gift of having found an apple tree in the middle of a forest. When he took the tenth apple in his hand, he was still very hungry, but he just did not feel like eating any more. Economics (经济学) calls this diminishing marginal utility (边际效用递减), like to call it diminishing gratitude (感恩), or in simpler words, taking things for granted. Or let’s just call it the tenth apple effect. The tenth apple did not lack (缺少) flavor (味道), nor was it unable to end the man’s hunger. The only thing lacking was his gratitude for finding food in the middle of the forest. 66.What happened to the hunter in the forest? A.An apple tree stopped him. B.He tried to eat an elephant. C.He lost his way in the forest. D.He was upset to find apples. 67.How did the hunter feel after eating more apples? A.More and more thankful. B.Less and less disappointed. C.Hungrier than he did before. D.Unhappier with each apple he ate. 68.Which sentence can best explain the underlined phrase in Paragraph3? A.Feeling thankful for unexpected gifts. B.Not being thankful for what you get. C.Happiness goes away as time goes on. D.The more things you find, the less useful they are. 69.What did the writer say about the tenth apple? A.It was unable to end the man’s hunger. B.The man didn’t want to throw it away. C.It was not as delicious as the other apples. D.The man lacked gratitude for it. 70.What may the writer wish readers to do in the daily life? A.Value what parents do for us. B.Say thanks to strangers in time. C.Be careful with someone who helps us. D.Not to be disappointed when in trouble. 十六 Here is a story: A man  sees a butterfly (蝴蝶). The butterfly tries to get out of its  chrysalis (蛹). Feeling sorry for it, the man decides to help. He cuts the chrysalis and the butterfly comes out easily. Surprisingly enough, the butterfly is unable to fly. If the butterfly doesn’t struggle to leave the chrysalis, it can’t fly! The struggle develops the energy in the butterfly which makes it fly. Similarly, the challenges of life bring out the best in young people and make them fly. When people are young, meeting and overcoming challenges will make them strong and ready to face life. When we look at successful people, we see that the most successful of them are people who have had to struggle. One famous businessman, who now owns many big supermarkets, used to carry clothes on his back and sell them from door to door when he was young. Another successful man is Dennis. His father died when he was only twenty. His father’s death forced him to mature  fast. He had to bring up a family of nine people. He  took up the challenges and overcame them. Today  his brothers and sisters are leading successful lives. Sometimes challenges do not appear to us because we keep away from them. So some parents and teachers actively encourage young people to face challenges. They might organize some activities for young people which provide them with challenges, like rock climbing, camping, volunteer work and so on.  However, just passing exams will not prepare a person for life. We must meet and overcome challenges. The young people of today will become the leaders of tomorrow. For countries to continue to become successful, it is important that the young people learn to meet challenges and overcome them. 71.From the story we know that the butterfly can’t fly because ________. A.it gets out by  itself B.the man feels sorry  for it C.it tries to  challenge itself D.the man helps it come out 72.Dennis’s example shows that successful people should ________. A.overcome the difficulties B.take up business early C.become the  leaders of tomorrow D.sell clothes from door to  door 73.The meaning of the underlined word “mature” in the passage is “________”. 74.What is the writer trying to do in this passage? A.Describe where a butterfly comes from. B.Encourage young people to face challenges. C.Suggest how to become a successful businessman. D.Explain what will happen if a person fails the exam. 75.What is the best title for this passage? A.Successful People Have a Sense of Achievement B.Young People Must Develop Their Energy Actively C.Countries Should Continue to Become Successful D.Challenges of Life Bring Out the Best in Young People 十七 Scrooge and the Spirit of Christmas Present went on, invisible, into a small house where Bob Cratchit, Scrooge’s clerk, lived with his family. Bob’s family couldn’t see Scrooge and the Spirit, but Scrooge could see them clearly. In the house, Bob and his family enjoyed a wonderful Christmas dinner. When everyone had finished eating, Bob poured a hot fruit drink into everyone’s cups. He held up his own and said, “ A merry Christmas to us all, my dears!” Everyone in the family repeated this and, “Merry Christmas, everyone!” said Tiny Tim, the last of all. Tiny Tim sat very close to his father’s side. Bob loved the child and wished to keep him by his side. It was as if Bob was afraid the boy might be taken from him. The boy had a special place in his father’s heart. “To Mr. Scrooge!” said Bob. “A merry Christmas to Mr. Scrooge who gave us our wonderful meal.” “Nonsense,” cried Mrs. Cratchit, with a red face. “I wish I had him here. I’d tell him what I think of him. He has given us nothing; you have worked all the hours of the day to earn the poor wage he pays you.” Thinking about Scrooge made all the Cratchits feel unhappy. Even Tiny Tim stopped smiling. They all knew what a mean, unkind man he was. The memory of the old man did not last long, and soon, they were all happy and cheerful again. They were not a handsome family. But, they were happy, grateful, and pleased with one another. The latest study showed that pangolins(穿山甲)may be an intermediate(中间的)host of virus, according to Xinhua. However, some people thought bats may be the original(起初的)cause. “We don’t know the source(来源)yet, but it’s possible that this is a bat origin corona-virus, said Peter Dazsak, president of Eco-Health Alliance, an environmental nonprofit(非营利机构)”, according to The New York Times, “When you look at the genetic sequence(基因序列)of the virus, and you match it up with every known corona-virus, the closest ones are from bats.” Dazsak also told CNN. So why are bats the source of so many deadly kinds of viruses and why don’t they suffer from any symptoms(症状)? Bats can live long and live with millions of other bats in caves, where they can spread the virus far and wide. As the only flying mammal, their body temperature is high, similar to a fever. This fact may lead to bats’ special immune system(免疫系统)in protecting them from the ill effects of viruses. It’s surprising to notice that the virus outbreak was traced(追溯)to the Huanan Seafood Market in Wuhan. People could buy no bats in the market. How could this be? “It seems that another animal host is acting as an intermediate host between bats and humans,” said Wu Guizhen, of the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, according to Live Science. But are bats truly to blame(责怪)for the virus or should we be blaming ourselves? It’s the fault(错误)of humans for decreasing(减少)the distance between us and virus-carrying bats. Bats are an important animal in our ecosystem(生态系统)when it comes to pollinating(授粉)many fruits such as mangoes, bananas and avocados. We need to allow them to continue pollination and keep them away from our markets and mouths. 80.What can we learn about the origin of the novel corona-virus? A.The virus was found to be genetically similar to those see in bats. B.Pangolins are now considered the most likely source. C.It’s confirmed by comparing sources of several different viruses. D.Bats have been discovered to be its original cause. 81.Why don’t bats suffer from the corona-virus? A.Their low body temperature protects them. B.Bats have a special immune system. C.Bats are the only flying mammal to live in groups. D.Living in caves helps bats fight against viruses. 82.Which of the following is not true? A.The intermediate host spreading the virus remains unknown. B.Bats are the only flying mammal with high body temperature. C.It’s wrong for us humans to get close to virus-carrying bats and eat them. D.Bats are the source of deadly kinds of viruses, so we avoid them continuing pollination. 83.What is the main point the author makes in the last paragraph? A.Virus-carrying bats should be killed. B.Humans should stay away from bats. C.Bats benefit but also harm our ecosystem. D.Bats could spread viruses during pollination. 十九 Because of the outbreak (疫情), many people look for fun online. Watching livestreaming (直播的) shows has become part of their lives. At the same time, traditional culture has found a bigger stage (舞台) online. Many traditional artists are starting to livestream, like Douyin and Bilibili. Some of them sing Peking Opera, some show their folk handcrafts(民间手工艺), while others perform Chinese classical music. A growing number of young people are starting to become more interested in traditional culture because of livestreaming. Li Ju is a Peking Opera performer with the Shanghai Jingju Theater Company. After the outbreak, the 59-year-old took up his smartphone and started livestreaming. Unlike performing on a formal stage, Li uses ordinary places as his stage, including his backyard and study room. Apart from singing, Li also teaches viewers (观看者) about Peking Opera. People can ask him questions and get answers directly, “Livestreaming has brought this elegant (高雅的) art down to earth.” one viewer said. “It gives young people an easier access to this traditional art and learn more about it.” Li has more than 6000 fans on Douyin, while one of his videos got 42,000 views on Bilibili. On March 26th, 2020, Bilibili livestreamed a huafu show on the third China Huafu Day (中国华服日). Performers presented clothes in traditional Chinese styles, including those from Wei, Tang and Ming dynasties (朝代) . During the show, viewers not only enjoyed looking at the clothes, but also watched how performers used ancient styles of make-up(古代化妆术) As Guangming Daily noted, livestreaming has come to a new stage through which traditional culture can be kept alive. 84.In the second paragraph, the writer mentioned Li Jun in order to ________. Polar bears have a very good sense of smell. It helps them to find food. During summer, polar bears sleep longer, because they are able to find their food more easily at night. Usually, after a meal, polar bears have a short sleep. A polar bear can have 2-3 babies at a time. They live with their mothers until they are about two-and-a-half years old. However, polar bears will die out soon because of people. There are only 20,000 to 25,000 polar bears in the world. The polar bears are trying to survive today. The number of polar bears is becoming smaller and smaller because of the loss of sea ice— polar bears mostly inhabit (居住于) the sea ice, not the land ice. This is happening because of global warming (全球气候变暖), pollution, hunting and so on. Ordinary people don't care, but great people have the power and want to save tigers, fight for giant pandas and save polar bears. Ordinary people will wait, but great people will find a new world. Most of these people are old people and children. Old people often get hurt or die because they can’t see or hear very well. Children usually meet with accidents because of their carelessness. They forgot to look and listen before they cross the road. How can we lessen (减少) traffic accidents? All of us must obey the traffic rules. For the drivers, they shouldn’t drive too fast. If they drive too fast, it will be very difficult to stop the cars in a very short time. For the pedestrians (行人), it’s very important to be careful when they are walking on the road. Therefore, when we walk across the road, we must try to walk along the pavements(人行道). We must stop and look both ways before crossing the road. Look left first, next look right, then look left again. Only when we are sure that the road is clear, we can cross it. The right way to cross the road is to walk quickly. It’s not safe to run. If people run across the road, they may fall down. Teens(青少年) should try to help children, old people or blind people to cross the road, and never play in the street. 96.Thousands of people get hurt or die when they are crossing the road every year, most of them are ______. The scientists are from the University of California, the Alaska Whale Foundation and the SETI Institute (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence Institute 搜寻地球外文明研究所). They teamed up and spoke to a humpback whale named Twain. They spoke to her in “humpback language” for 20 minutes. Their conversation took place after the scientists sent a “contact call” into the ocean off the coast of Alaska. Twain heard the call and responded (回应). She swam to the research boat, circled it and chatted. The SETI Institute said it was the first ever communication between humans and a humpback whale. The scientists said their conversation with Twain was not a deep one. Professor Brenda Mc Cowan said it was more like a series of greetings. Whales use contact calls to let other whales know where they are. The scientists made the same call 36 times over a 20-minute period. Each time, Twain responded by calling back. She even matched the intervals (间隔) between each call that the researchers made, which greatly surprised the scientists. Professor Brenda Mc Cowan told the Business Insider website that this research could make it easier to talk to aliens (外星人). She said, “There are many kinds of intelligent beings on this planet. By studying them, we can better understand what aliens might be like.” Based on this research, scientists may identify calls from space and make first contact with aliens in the future. 105.Where did the “conversation” take place? Just look at some Chinese sayings such as “Boiling a dead pig.” and “A pig looking in the mirror is still a pig.”And in English, there are some sayings like “Eating like a pig.” and “Pigs might fly.” None of them are complimentary. However, pigs have some good qualities (品质). They are even as smart as dogs and elephants. They have good memories. And they know whether people treat them well or not. A UK cartoon, Peppa Pig is a most popular cartoon. The four members in the pig family teach children from all around the world about love, friendship and the value of family, And a Chinese cartoon film, the Adventures of Mcdull, is also very famous. In the cartoon, the little pig, Mcdull, has a heart of gold and always works hard for his dreams. Most people want quick success, but Mcdull is slow and patient, and not afraid of failing again and again. Maybe when we talk about pigs next time, we should think of their good qualities. 110.China and Western countries have ________ in cultures according to the passage. A.pigs have good qualities B.the two cartoons are well-known C.both Chinese and English children like pigs 114.What’s the best title (标题) of the passage? A.Opinions on Pigs B.Opinions on Animals C.Opinions on Cartoons 二十六 In the town of Lampang in northern Thailand, there is an unusual group of musicians. They play many different kinds of music — from traditional Thai songs to music by Beethoven. Both children and adults love this group. What makes them so popular? Is it their music? Their looks? Yes, it’s both of these things, but it’s also something else: they’re elephants. These musical elephants are from the Thai Elephant Conservation Center (TECC) in Lampang. The TECC protects elephants. It teaches people to understand and care for these huge, but gentle animals. And, like many zoos around the world, the TECC encourages elephants to paint. Richard Lair works with the TECC. He knew that elephants hear better than they see. So he had an idea: if elephants are intelligent and they have good hearing, maybe they can play music. To test his idea, Lair and a friend started the Thai Elephant Orchestra. During a performance, the elephants play many kinds of instruments, such as the drums and the xylophone. The animals also use their voices and trunks to make sounds. But can elephants really make music properly? Yes, says Lair. They’re very creative. Humans may encourage the animals to play instruments, but the elephants make their own songs; they don’t just copy their trainers or other people. There are now CDs of the group’s music, which make money for the TECC. And the music these artists create is pretty amazing. 115.Where can we most probably read this passage? A.A science newspaper. B.An animal magazine. C.A story book. D.A history book. 116.What does the underlined word “them” refer to (指代) in the passage? A.Musicians. B.Children. C.Adults. However, too much of it may result in health problems. When self-criticism becomes too much, it can turn into negative self-talk. Negative self-talk is that little voice in your head. It says you are not good enough. Dr. Hugh, a scientist said that some good students who study hard usually do not do well in a test because of negative self-talk. Lindsay was one of Hugh’s best students. She came to class early, took part in discussions and did all her homework. However, she did poorly in exams. When Hugh asked her how she felt before a test, she told him she was very nervous. She was not sure that she knew the right answers. This is an example of negative self-talk. Dr. Hugh turned Lindsay’s negative self-talk into positive (积极的) questions. During a test, he told Lindsay to say to herself: Why do I remember everything I study for an exam? ★ ? Lindsay took his advice. Two weeks later, she took an exam in another class and scored 15 points higher than she had on an earlier exam. Four weeks later, she earned an “A” on the final exam in Hugh’s class. Dr. Hugh saw students work out fine with his method. And he does not just help his students. He also advises his friends and neighbors to give up negative self-talk in their life. He once said, “We can program ourselves for success in class or in life, or we can program ourselves for failure.” 120.How does the writer lead in the topic in paragraph 1? A.By listing numbers. In Montana, you might drive for a mile in any direction and not see another human being. In Macao, 60,000 people live in every square mile! What is true is that the world’s population doesn’t stay the same. It has been increasing at a very fast rate (比例). That’s in part because in each generation (代) there are more people who then have children than in the last generation. Five hundred years ago, the population of the world was about 460 million. In 1920s, the world’s population was under 2.5 billion (十亿). Right now it is doubling every 40 years. That means, if this rate of growth continues, when you are a parent, there will be twice as many people on the earth as there are now. Wow! Now that’s a whole lot of people! Soon the world’s population will probably reach 7 billion. Some people worry about that! But there is a lot of disagreement about just how many people on the earth equals (相当于) too many people. But everyone agrees that the more people there are, the more resources (资源) the world needs to feed, house and take care of all of them, and the more need there is to think carefully about how we live and use the earth’s resources. 125.From the first paragraph (段落) we can know that ________. A.people live longer than before B.there are fewer wars than before C.medicine is developing faster than before D.more couples now would like to have children than before 127.What was the world’s population 100 years ago? A.450 million. B.About 2.5 billion. C.40 billion. D.7 billion. 128.The writer thinks that with the population increasing, we should ________. A.find more resources B.use more resources C.think about our ways of living D.move to other places 129.From the passage we can learn that the writer ________. How about trying the traditional opera—Yueju Opera? Thirty students decided to learn it during their vacation. Yueju Opera started in the city of Shengzhou, Zhejiang, around 1906. Today, like many other traditional operas, Yueju Opera has a hard time attracting (吸引) young people. So some Yueju Opera artists in Shanghai gave cultural talks to young people. They also taught young people for free and invited them to backstage (后台) after shows. As a result, many young people became interested in Yueju Opera. Chen Xingyu is one of them. They go to the museums and theaters. They look at interesting old buildings or have a drink in a park. A quick and easy way to get to different places in the city is to take an underground train. The trains run all day and most of the night. You’d better not take the underground between eight o’clock and ten o’clock in the morning, or four o’clock and six o’clock in the afternoon. The trains are so crowded that you can hardly move or find a place to sit. London’s famous red buses form a big part of getting around in London. Although the London underground is the fastest and the easiest way of getting around London, the buses play their part and are an experience you should try at least once. By sitting on the top deck (层) of the bus, you can get a great sightseeing experience of London too. The buses take you to many of the interesting places in the city on one journey. It takes about one and a half hours, but you can end your journey and get off (and on again) at different places you want to visit. London taxis are called “black cabs”. Most of them are black, but some are not. You can stop one if it has a “For Hire (供租用的)” sign on it. The drivers are friendly and helpful. In a word, London is a big and beautiful city — with lots to see and to do. Welcome to London. 134.We can learn from the passage that ________. Somehow, with each passing apple, his hunger refused to go away and he became unhappier.” 根据第3段“He had already taken for granted the gift of having found an apple tree in the middle of a forest...I like to call it diminishing gratitude”可知,当猎人把在丛林中找到的苹果树看作是理所当然,吃第10个苹果没有了味道时,就是感恩递减了,所以感恩递减就是对所拥有的东西越来越不感激,故taking things for granted的意思是“对所拥有的东西越来越不感激”。故选B。 69. 根据第4段“The only thing lacking was his gratitude for finding food in the middle of the forest.” A。 71.D 72.A 73.C 74.B 75.D 根据第一段“Feeling sorry for it, the man decides to help. He took up the challenges and overcame them”,可知是父亲的去世让他快速成长起来,面对并战胜了挑战。故选A。 73. 根据下文“He had to bring up a family of nine people. He took up the challenges and overcame them. Today his brothers and sisters are leading successful lives”,可知父亲的去世让他快速成长并成熟起来,承担起家庭的重担。 通读全文,结合最后“For countries to continue to become successful, it is important that the young people learn to meet challenges and overcome them”可知,短文主要是鼓励青年人面对困难必须学会迎接挑战。故选 B。 75. 76.C 77.D 78.B 79.A 根据“Bob’s family couldn’t see Scrooge and the Spirit, but Scrooge could see them clearly”可知,Bob的家人看不见Scrooge和Spirit,说明他们俩是隐形地进入了房子里,所以invisible表示“隐形的”,故选C。 77. 根据“It was as if Bob was afraid the boy might be taken from him”可知,Bob不想失去Tim,故选D。 78. 根据“Thinking about Scrooge made all the Cratchits feel unhappy”可知,提到Scrooge让所有人都不开心,故选B。 79. A。 80.A 81.B 82.D 83.B 根据第三段最后一句“‘When you look at the genetic sequence (基因序列)of the virus, and you match it up with every known corona-virus, the closest ones are from bats.’ Dazsak also told CNN.” 故选A。 81. 根据第四段最后一句“This fact may lead to bats’ special immune system(免疫系统)in protecting from the ill effects of viruses.” 根据最后一段最后两句“Bats are an important animal in our ecosystem(生态系统)when it comes to pollinating(授粉)many fruits such as mangoes, bananas and avocados. We need to allow them to continue pollination and keep them away from our markets and mouths.” 根据最后一段第二句“It’s the fault(错误)of humans for decreasing(减少)the distance between us and virus-carrying bats.”及最后一句“We need to allow them to continue pollination and keep them away from our markets and mouths.” 根据“A growing number of young people are starting to become more interested in traditional culture because of livestreaming. Li Ju is a Peking Opera performer with the Shanghai Jingju Theater Company. After the outbreak, the 59-year-old took up his smartphone and started livestreaming…” 根据““Livestreaming has brought this elegant (高雅的) art down to earth.” one viewer said. “It gives young people an easier access to this traditional art and learn more about it.” Li has more than 6000 fans on Douyin, while one of his videos got 42,000 views on Bilibili.” 由此可知,第二、三、四段具体介绍了直播媒体对传统文化的具体作用与影响,同时第三段又进一步补充说明了第一段的内容;根据第五段“As Guangming Daily noted, livestreaming has come to a new stage through which traditional culture can be kept alive.” 根据“As Guangming Daily noted, livestreaming has come to a new stage through which traditional culture can be kept alive.” 88.B 89.B 90.C 91.A 根据“Alice sees a small glass box under the table. Inside the box, there is a cake with the words “EAT ME” on it.” 根据“She eats the cake but nothing happens. Then suddenly she becomes big.”可知,她先吃了蛋糕,是序号b;根据“She takes the key and goes to the door to the garden. But she is too big and can’t go in! She sits down and starts to cry again. Her tears make a big pool.”可知,当她进不去花园的时候,她哭了,她的眼泪变成了一个大池塘,是序号a;根据“The White Rabbit is afraid and runs away.”可知,The White Rabbit被吓跑了,是序号c;根据“Alice looks at her hand and she is suddenly wearing one of the White Rabbit’s gloves. “Oh, no,” she says, “I’m becoming small again. I want to get out of this pool.” The Mouse does not answer. “Perhaps it doesn’t understand English,”…He swims away and Alice follows him.” 根据“This is the first sentence in her French book. The Mouse is angry and says in English, “I don’t like cats! My family doesn’t like cats! I’m a mouse!” He swims away and Alice follows him.” A。 92.A 93.B 94.C 95.A The number of polar bears is becoming smaller and smaller because of the loss of sea ice— polar bears mostly inhabit (居住于) the sea ice, not the land ice. This is happening because of global warming (全球气候变暖), pollution, hunting and so on. 故选A 。 A. But there is a lot of disagreement about just how many people on the earth equals (相当于) too many people.” 130.C 131.A 132.B 133.C 根据第一段“How about trying the traditional opera—Yueju Opera?”和第二段“Yueju Opera started in the city of Shengzhou, Zhejiang, around 1906.” 根据第二段“So some Yueju Opera artists in Shanghai gave cultural talks to young people. They also taught young people for free and invited them to backstage after shows.” 故选A。 132. 根据第二段“I’m happy they come.
