Question:
Was the vicar pleased that the clock was striking? Why?
Yes, he was quite pleased. Because the clock was working again, striking the wrong hour was better than not striking at all.
1 What woke the vicar up?
2 What was the time?
3 How many times did the clock strike?
4 Where did the vicar go?
5 What did he take with him?
6 Whom did he see in the clock tower?
7 What did Bill Wilkins say he was trying to do?
8 Had Bill Wilkins succeeded in repairing the clock or not?
9 Was the vicar pleased or angry?
10 What did he offer the grocer?
Answer these questions in note form to get your points:
Our vicar is always raising money for one cause or another, but he has never managed to get enough money to have the church clock repaired.
1) is always raising money
How are you feeling today? (比How do you feel?
My daughter is doing fine work at school. (比My daughter does fine work at school 更有赞美之意)
He’s always boasting.
He’s continually asking me for money.
My father’s forever losing his keys.
Our vicar is always raising money for one cause or another, but he has never managed to get enough money to have the church clock repaired
He has money enough/enough money.
We are strong enough to be able to resist aggression.
He did the job well enough.
He was fool enough to believe what the cheat said.
Are you brave enough to tell him what you think?
Our vicar is always raising money for one cause or another, but he has never managed to get enough money to have the church clock repaired
3)have something done
-- have the church clock repaired
-- have the plane repaired / -- have hair cut
-- His wallet was stolen. He had his wallet stolen.
The big clock which used to strike the hours day and night was damaged many years ago and has been silent ever since.
He used to play cards a lot.
He plays cards a lot.
Did you use/ Used you to play football at school?
I didn’t use/used not to like opera, but now I’m getting interested.
I used to go to London seven times.
I went to London seven times.
One night, however, our vicar woke up with a start: the clock was striking the hours!
I would like to go; however, I think I’d better not.
I feel a bit tired; however, it’s probably just the weather.
One night, however, our vicar woke up with a start: the clock was striking the hours!
2) with a start
The boy woke up from the bad dream with a start.
Looking at his watch, he saw that it was one o'clock, but the bell struck thirteen times before it stopped.
1) looking at his watch
Turning around, she saw a blue car driving up.
I’ll tell you as soon as I know.
He’ll be back before you’ve left.
The bell struck thirteen times before it stopped.
=It was not until the thirteenth stroke that the bell stopped
Armed with a torch, the vicar went up into the clock tower to see what was going on.
Armed with a torch
Not knowing what to do, I telephoned police.
Putting down my newspaper, I walked over to the window and looked out.
It rained for two weeks on end, completely ruining our holiday.
Used economically, one tin will last at least six weeks.
In the torchlight, he caught sight of a figure whom he immediately recognized as Bill Wilkins, our local grocer.
bear/stand the sight of …
I really cannot bear the sight of that sloven woman.
dread the sight of 害怕见到,如:
Most of the staff in the company dread the sight of their tyrant-like boss.
hate the sight of 讨厌见到,如:
I hate the sight of him, for he’s always blindly boasting in face of others.
It was he, at that moment, who caught sight of the existing danger.
In the torchlight, he caught sight of a figure whom he immediately recognized as Bill Wilkins, our local grocer.
keep sight of 将…
In order to prevent him from escaping ,the police have been keeping sight of him for two weeks on end.
In the fog, we lost sight of the boat, and didn’t know what to do.
In the torchlight, he caught sight of a figure whom he immediately recognized as Bill Wilkins, our local grocer.
2) recognize … as…
I was recognizing her while walking in the crowd.
I recognized her while walking in the crowd.
I have recognized him for a long time.
I recognize him very well/
I have known him for a long time.
I know him very well.
'Whatever are you doing up here Bill ?' asked the vicar in surprise.
Who ever/Whoever broke the vase?
Which ever/Whichever does she want?
Where ever/Wherever did you see him stealing?
On hearing the sudden news, they stared in dumb surprise.
At last she went away in grieved surprise.
' I'm trying to repair the bell,' answered Bill.' I've been coming up here night after night for weeks now.
I’ve been coming
I haven’t been working very well recently.
He hasn’t worked for years.
I’ve painted two rooms since lunch time.
Sorry about the mess-I’ve been painting the house.
You see, I was hoping to give you a surprise.
There, you see, the snow’s stopped.
Thus, you see, she saved me.
2) I was hoping …
I was hoping we could have dinner together.
'You certainly did give me a surprise!' said the vicar.
You do look nice today!
She does talk a lot, doesn’t she?
Do come in!
Do have another potato!
Do be quiet!
Do be careful!
'You've probably woken up everyone in the village as well. Still, I'm glad the bell is working again.'
I did fail in the experiment-Still, I’ve learned a lot from it.
'That's the trouble, vicar,' answered Bill. 'It's working all right, but I'm afraid that at one o'clock it will strike thirteen times and there's nothing I can do about it.'
1) I can do about it为定语从句,修饰nothing,之间省略了关系单词that。
She’s no longer the girl (that) she was before she went to the countryside.
I’m not the fool (that) you thought me.
Everything (that) he said seemed quite reasonable.
I must make full use of the time (that) there is left to me.
'That's the trouble, vicar,' answered Bill. 'It's working all right, but I'm afraid that at one o'clock it will strike thirteen times and there's nothing I can do about it.'
The tool with which he is working is called a hand drill.
The tool (that) he is working with is called a hand drill.
This is the question about which we’ve had so much discussion.
This is the question (that) we’ve had so much discussion about.
'We'll get used to that Bill,' said the vicar. 'Thirteen is not as good as one but it's better than nothing. Now let's go downstairs and have a cup of tea.'
1) get used to 变得习惯于。
2)as good as和…
Her handwriting is good as his.
We are as good as ruined.
This old bike is as good as useless.
I’m always hearing strange stories about him.
They always stay up till midnight.
Grammar in use
You certainly did give me a surprise!
e.g.
Tom does know Shanghai well.
Do phone me when you get to Beijing.
it is/was…that/who…
eg. It is you that/who I like.
It was from September 12th that we began our study in this term.
In 的用法:
In surprise; in astonishment; in alarm; in embarrassment; in despair; in dismay; in anger
In English; in pencil; in ink; in a few words; in such a high voice; in oil; in red; in code
In trouble; in difficulty; in bed; in a hurry; in debt; in love with sb. ; in tear; in good health; in the bad mood
Eg:Whatever she did was right.
Eg:Whatever we said, he'd disagree.
I can do whatever work I can find.
Whatever difficulties we meet, we can get them over.
Give me whatever books you have on the subject.
Whatever the causes (may have been), a change took place.
Whatever your argument (is), I shall hold to my decision.
You should wear whichever dress suits you best.
She could not remember, however hard she tried.
五、whatever与no matter what
Don’t trust him, no matter what/whatever he says.
六、whatever还可用于加强语气,相当于what ever, what on earth等。
Whatever / What ever is the matter?
※and whatever等等
